Emphasis of each review was placed on quantifying physical properties of current Class I injection zones in Harrison and Jackson Counties. Class I injection zones are zones that are used for injection of hazardous or non-hazardous liquid waste below a formation containing the lowermost underground source of drinking water located within one-quarter of a mile of the injection well.  Several mathematical models have been developed to simulate injection effects. The Basic Plume Method was selected because it is commonly used in permit applications, and the Intercomp model was selected because it is generally accepted and used in injection-related research. The input data requirements of the two models were combined into a single data requirement list inclusive of physical properties of injection zones only; injected waste and well properties are not included because such information is site-specific by industry, which is beyond the scope of this report.  Results of the reviews of available literature and data indicated that Class I permit applications and standard-reference chemistry and physics texts were the primary sources of information to quantify physical properties of injection zones in Harrison and Jackson Counties. With the exception of a few reports and supplementary data for one injection zone in Jackson County, very little additional information pertaining to physical properties of the injection zones was available in sources other than permit applications and standard-reference texts.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri944021","usgsCitation":"Rebich, R.A., 1994, Data requirements for simulation of hydrogeologic effects of liquid waste injection, Harrison and Jackson Counties, Mississippi: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4021, iv, 19 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944021.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p. Water samples from aquifers in glacial sediments and aquifers in sedimentary and igneous bedrock of the Newark  Supergroup were analyzed for major ions. Most samples were analyzed for metals, nutrients, and tritium; 38 samples were analyzed for purgeable organic compounds. Calcium and bicarbonate were the predominant ions in ground water in the study area. Ground water was dilute (median dissolved-solids concentration 239 milligrams per liter) and slightly basic (median pH 7.89). Concentrations of inorganic constituents were within U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) primary drinking-water regulations. Concentrations of benzene, tetrachloroethylene, and  trichloroethylene, however, were greater than USEPA primary drinking-water regulations in six samples. Ground-water samples from aquifers in sedimentary bedrock were enriched in barium, calcium, magnesium, strontium,and sulfate relative to samples form the other aquifers. Such ion enrichment can be attributed either to disolution of carbonate and sulfate-containing minerals or to human activities. Ground-water samples from two wells screened in glacial sediments near swamps contained sulfate in concentrations higher than the median for the aquifer. Sulfate enrichment could result from downward leaching of water enriched in sulfur from the decay of organic matter in the swamps, from the disolution of sulfate-containing minerals, or from human activities. No regional trends in the chemical composition of the ground water in the study area were identified. Sulfate concentrations in ground- water samples from the sedimentary bedrock tended to increase with decreasing altitude of the deepest opening of the well; the correlation coefficient for the ranks of sulfate  concentration and the altitude of the deepest opening of the well for 17 pairs of data is -0.690. Concentrations of tritium were greater than the detection limit in 33 of 35 ground-water samples, indicating that most ground water in the study area is more recent than 1953.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri924083","usgsCitation":"Czarnik, T., and Kozinski, J., 1994, Ground-water quality in the central part of the Passaic River basin, northeastern New Jersey, 1959-88: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4083, vi, 66 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri924083.","productDescription":"vi, 66 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123731,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4083/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":55602,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4083/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8fe4b07f02db6556ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Czarnik, T.S.","contributorId":89178,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Czarnik","given":"T.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196897,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kozinski, Jane","contributorId":59836,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kozinski","given":"Jane","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196896,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Alternatively, NETPATH computes the mixing proportions of two to five initial waters and net geochemical reactions that can account for the observed composition of a final water. The program utilizes previously defined chemical and isotopic data for waters from a hydrochemical system. For a set of mineral and (or) gas phases hypothesized to be the reactive phases in the system, NETPATH calculates the mass transfers in every possible combination of the selected phases that accounts for the observed changes in the selected chemical and (or) isotopic compositions observed along the flow path. The calculations are of use in interpreting geochemical reactions, mixing proportions, evaporation and (or) dilution of waters, and mineral mass transfer in the chemical and isotopic evolution of natural and environmental waters. Rayleigh distillation calculations are applied to each mass-balance model that satisfies the constraints to predict carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and strontium isotopic compositions at the end point, including radiocarbon dating. DB is an interactive Fortran 77 computer program used to enter analytical data into NETPATH, and calculate the distribution of species in aqueous solution. This report describes the types of problems that can be solved, the methods used to solve problems, and the features available in the program to facilitate these solutions. Examples are presented to demonstrate most of the applications and features of NETPATH. The codes DB and NETPATH can be executed in the UNIX or DOS1 environment. This report presents estimates of the average annual ground-water discharge from the Coastal Plain of Virginia using two approaches. Average annual ground-water discharge from 16 gaged watersheds in the Coastal Plain of Virginia estimated by use of a streamflow hydrograph-separation approach ranged from 7.5 to 12.5 inches per year; the median was 10.8 inches per year. These estimates are similar to those reported by other investigators for the Coastal Plain in the nearby Delmarva Peninsula. Average annual ground-water discharge also was estimated by use of a hydrogeologic-area approach. In this approach, areas that have similar hydrogeologic charac- teristics are grouped and multiple regression is used to determine the relation between the hydro- geologic areas and ground-water discharge. The multiple-regression analysis indicates that ground-water discharge within the Coastal Plain of Virginia is a function of the relative areal extent of well-drained uplands and moderately well-drained uplands. On the basis of the hydro- geologic-area approach, ground-water discharge from the Coastal Plain of Virginia averages 9.9 inches per year.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri934191","usgsCitation":"Richardson, D., 1994, Ground-water discharge from the Coastal Plain of Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4191, iv, 15 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934191.","productDescription":"iv, 15 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123733,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4191/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58191,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4191/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58192,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4191/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66ce84","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Richardson, D.L.","contributorId":22807,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richardson","given":"D.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201381,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Scan samples were used to estimate the proportion of birds feeding in flocks as a measure of feeding intensity. Most geese fed during low tides and roosted during high tides. However, flocks with disproportionately more juveniles continued to feed during high tides in either blue mussel (<i>Mytilus edulis</i>) beds (during relatively low high tides) or in vegetated habitats. Feeding intensity was higher in mussel habitats than in mud/sand or vegetated habitats, and juveniles fed more than adults. Juvenile geese probably have greater nutritional needs than adults, and feeding during high tide may represent their attempt to satisfy these disproportionate demands. These data show that this continental rise area contains deposits of submarine landslides and pathways of sediment gravity flows. Images of the sea floor obtained with a deep-towed high-resolution sidescan sonar system show offshore-trending furrowed surfaces over parts of the area. If such furrows are old, one might expect them to have been obliterated by sediment resuspension and redeposition due to the mostly gentle contour-parallel bottom currents that are measured in the present day. While most of the sea-floor features were probably formed during Pleistocene or early Holocene (glacial or early post-glacial) times, our information suggests that vigorous present-day episodes of offshore-directed transport may continue to occur, at unknown intervals.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr94152","usgsCitation":"Robb, J.M., 1994, Geologic features of the sea bottom around a municipal sludge dumpsite near 39 degrees N., 73 degrees W., offshore New Jersey and New York (Online version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-152, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94152.","productDescription":"42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407092,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_12464.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":50188,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0152/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1140,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/of94-152/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":154015,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0152/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey, New York","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.25,\n              38.5833\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.833,\n              38.5833\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.833,\n              39.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.25,\n              39.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.25,\n              38.5833\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Online version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a605a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robb, James M.","contributorId":60225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robb","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Physical and chemical data were collected from areas within and near the Sun River Irrigation Project and from wetland areas receiving irrigation drainage. Biological data were collected from areas in and near Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area and Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Additional biological data were collected previously during 1987-89 as part of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service program. This report presents data for selenium and other potentially toxic constituents in solid-phase, water, and biological media. Data consist of concentrations of major and trace elements in soil and drill cores; concen- trations of major ions, nutrients, and trace elements in ground water and surface water; and trace-element concentrations in bottom sediment and biological tissue. Hydrogeologic data for domestic and test wells and daily streamflow data for selected sites also are included.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr94120","usgsCitation":"Lambing, J., Nimick, D., Knapton, J.R., and Palawski, D.U., 1994, Physical, chemical, and biological data for detailed study of the Sun River Irrigation Project, Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area, and Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge, west-central Montana, 1990-92, with selected data for 1987-89: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-120, vi, 171 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94120.","productDescription":"vi, 171 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":411098,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_12458.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":149054,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0120/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46635,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0120/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","otherGeospatial":"Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area, Sun River Irrigation Project","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.18875410084789,\n              47.82606822166588\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.03729739744648,\n              47.82606822166588\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.03729739744648,\n              47.59612633090251\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.18875410084789,\n              47.59612633090251\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.18875410084789,\n              47.82606822166588\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db697fb4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lambing, J. (MIDI), system. The biomass, taxonomic structure, and expected MIDI-FAME profiles under a variety of environmental conditions were known for these model communities a priori. Not all members of each community could be detected in the composite profile because of lack of fatty acid 'signatures' in some isolates or because of variations (approximately fivefold) in fatty acid yield across taxa. MIDI- FAME profiles of replicate subsamples of a given community were similar in terms of fatty acid yield per unit of community dry weight and relative proportions of specific fatty acids. Principal-components analysis (PCA) of MIDI-FAME profiles resulted in a clear separation of the two different communities and a clustering of replicates of each community from two separate experiments on the first PCA axis. The first PCA axis accounted for 57.1% of the variance in the data and was correlated with fatty acids that varied significantly between communities and reflected the underlying community taxonomic structure. On the basis of our data, community fatty acid profiles can be used to assess the relative similarities and differences of microbial communities that differ in taxonomic composition. However, detailed interpretation of community fatty acid profiles in terms of biomass or community taxonomic composition must be viewed with caution until our knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative distribution of fatty acids over a wide variety of taxa and the effects of growth conditions on fatty acid profiles is more extensive.","language":"English","publisher":"American Society for Microbiology","doi":"10.1128/aem.60.7.2483-2493.1994","issn":"00992240","usgsCitation":"Kidd, H.S., Garchow, H., Odelson, D., Forney, L., and Klug, M., 1994, Accuracy, reproducibility, and interpretation of fatty acid methyl ester profiles of model bacterial communities: Applied and Environmental Microbiology, v. 60, no. 7, p. 2483-2493, https://doi.org/10.1128/aem.60.7.2483-2493.1994.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"2483","endPage":"2493","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":479357,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1128/aem.60.7.2483-2493.1994","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":228620,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"60","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e68ce4b0c8380cd474b5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kidd, Haack S.","contributorId":103022,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kidd","given":"Haack","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":377222,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Garchow, H.","contributorId":102647,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garchow","given":"H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":377221,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Odelson, D.A.","contributorId":11353,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Odelson","given":"D.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":377218,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Forney, L.J.","contributorId":49118,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Forney","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":377220,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Klug, M.J.","contributorId":33070,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Klug","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":377219,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The overall frequency of adoption </span><span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1675773204\"><span class=\"aQJ\">in three years</span></span><span> was 8% of 88 chicks from 57 focal nests. Premature nest-departure occurred at different stages among first- and second-hatched chicks. Departing second-hatched chicks were usually expelled by their nest mates within a few days after hatching. First-hatched chicks left at all stages and usually were the sole nest occupant when they departed. The evidence for parent-offspring recognition was equivocal. Adults accepted alien chicks that appeared in the nest and also occasionally attacked their own young outside the nest. However, asymmetry in the response of parents and nonparents to vagrant chicks seeking access to a nest suggested that adults were often able to discriminate appropriately. Vagrant chicks appeared to have little control over their fate-most entered nests where they were smaller than the resident young and suffered nest-mate aggression. A recent example is the catastrophic flooding in the Houston area in October 1994 that resulted in at least 22 deaths, hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage, and substantial environmental damage. When flooding is imminent, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mobilizes field crews that work around the clock making direct measurements of streamflow and water-surface elevations. The data collected by USGS personnel are provided continuously to the National Weather Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency among others. One explanation for this high pore-fluid pressure is the generation of oil from kerogen in the Green River oil shale at depth. A three-dimensional simulation of flow in the basin was done to test this hypothesis.</p><p>In the flow simulation, oil generation is included as a fluid source. The kinetics of oil generation from oil shale is a function of temperature. The temperature is controlled by (1) the depth of sediment burial and (2) the geothermal gradient.</p><p>Using this conceptual model, the pressure buildup results from the trade-off between the rate of oil generation and the flow away from the source volume. The pressure increase depends primarily on (1) the rate of the oil-generation reaction and (2) the permeability of the reservoir rocks. A sensitivity analysis was performed in which both of these parameters were systematically varied. The reservoir permeability must be lower than most of the observed data for the pressure to build up to near lithostatic.</p><p>The results of the simulations indicated that once oil generation was initiated, the pore pressure built up rapidly to near lithostatic. We simulated hydrofractures in that part of the system in which the pressures approach lithostatic by increasing both the horizontal and the vertical permeability by an order of magnitude. Because the simulated hydrofractures were produced by the high pore pressure, they were restricted to the Altamont field. A new flow system was established in the vicinity of the reservoir; the maximum pore pressure was limited by the least principal stress. Fluids moved vertically up and down and laterally outward away from the source of oil generation. The analysis indicated that, assuming that one is willing to accept the low values of permeability, oil generati n can account for the observed high pressures at Altamont field.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Datapages, Inc.","doi":"10.1306/A25FF279-171B-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Bredehoeft, J., Wesley, J., and Fouch, T.D., 1994, Simulations of the origin of fluid pressure, fracture gen eration, and the movement of fluids in the Uinta Basin, Utah: AAPG Bulletin, v. 78, no. 11, p. 1729-1747, https://doi.org/10.1306/A25FF279-171B-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"1729","endPage":"1747","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":339053,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"78","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58e35f91e4b09da67997ed04","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bredehoeft, J.D.","contributorId":12836,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bredehoeft","given":"J.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":688100,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wesley, J.B.","contributorId":93940,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wesley","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":688101,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fouch, T.
