The atlas was begun as an effort to depict the areal distribution of surficial geologic deposits and other materials that accumulated or formed during the past 2+ million years, the period that includes all activities of the human species. These materials are at the surface of the earth. They make up the 'ground' on which we walk, the 'dirt' in which we dig foundations, and the 'soil' in which we grow crops. Most of our human activity is related in one way or another to these surface materials that are referred to collectively by many geologists as regolith, the mantle of fragmental and generally unconsolidated material that overlies the bedrock foundation of the continent. The maps were compiled at 1:1,000,000 scale.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis map is part of the Quaternary Geologic Atlas of the United States (I-1420). It was first published as a printed edition in 1994. The geologic data have now been captured digitally and are presented here along with images of the printed map sheet and component parts as PDF files.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/i1420(NK14)","usgsCitation":"Dreeszen, V.H., Richmond, G.M., Tipton, M.J., Bretz, R.F., Steece, F.V., Hallberg, G.R., and Goebel, J.E., 1994, Quaternary Geologic Map of the Platte River 4 Degrees x 6 Degrees Quadrangle, United States (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 1420(NK-14), Map Sheet: 55.5 x 35.5 inches; Zip Files; Downloads Directory, https://doi.org/10.3133/i1420(NK14).","productDescription":"Map Sheet: 55.5 x 35.5 inches; Zip Files; Downloads Directory","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":106738,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_9216.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"9216"},{"id":187311,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":11638,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i-1420/nk-14/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"1000000","projection":"Modified Polyconic","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -102,40 ], [ -102,44 ], [ -96,44 ], [ -96,40 ], [ -102,40 ] ] ] } } ] }","edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db63531e","contributors":{"compilers":[{"text":"Swinehart, James B.","contributorId":85270,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swinehart","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749881,"contributorType":{"id":3,"text":"Compilers"},"rank":1}],"editors":[{"text":"Richmond, Gerald M.","contributorId":87165,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richmond","given":"Gerald M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749880,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Dreeszen, Vincent H.","contributorId":21640,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dreeszen","given":"Vincent","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271492,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Richmond, Gerald Martin","contributorId":89908,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richmond","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"Martin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tipton, Merlin J.","contributorId":38230,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tipton","given":"Merlin","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271494,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bretz, Richard F.","contributorId":16508,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bretz","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271491,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Steece, Fred V.","contributorId":31833,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steece","given":"Fred","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271493,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Hallberg, George R.","contributorId":10492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hallberg","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271488,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Goebel, Joseph E.","contributorId":15279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goebel","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":271490,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

Although large parts of the flood plains of both rivers upstream from St. Louis, Missouri, were inundated, water levels would have been even higher had it not been for the large volume of runoff retained in flood-control reservoirs. Most of the total floodcontrol storage available upstream from St. Louis is located along the main stem and tributaries of the Missouri River; the largest concentration of reservoirs is located within the Kansas River Basin. The Kansas River Basin accounts for about 10 percent (60,000 square miles) of the drainage area of the Missouri River Basin, and reservoirs control streamflow from 85 percent (50,840 square miles) of the drainage area of the Kansas River Basin. Analyses of flood discharges in the Kansas River indicate that reservoirs reduced flooding along the Kansas and the lower Missouri Rivers. Results of analyses of the 1993 flooding, which include total basin rainfall, peak discharge, and total flood volume on the Kansas River, are compared with analyses of the 1951 flood, which had a similar total volume but a substantially larger peak discharge. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir1120E","usgsCitation":"Perry, C.A., 1994, Effects of reservoirs on flood discharges in the Kansas and the Missouri River basins, 1993: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1120, vi, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir1120E.","productDescription":"vi, 20 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":530,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/circ1120e","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":407090,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_24108.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":352371,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1993/circ1120-e/pdf/circ_1120-e.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":122600,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/cir_1120_E.bmp"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska","otherGeospatial":"Kansas and Missouri River basins","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.75,\n              38.378\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.583,\n              38.378\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.583,\n              41.289\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.75,\n              41.289\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.75,\n              38.378\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db61186a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Perry, Charles A. cperry@usgs.gov","contributorId":2093,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Perry","given":"Charles","email":"cperry@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":149320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

If such furrows are old, one might expect them to have been obliterated by sediment resuspension and redeposition due to the mostly gentle contour-parallel bottom currents that are measured in the present day. While most of the sea-floor features were probably formed during Pleistocene or early Holocene (glacial or early post-glacial) times, our information suggests that vigorous present-day episodes of offshore-directed transport may continue to occur, at unknown intervals.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr94152","usgsCitation":"Robb, J.M., 1994, Geologic features of the sea bottom around a municipal sludge dumpsite near 39 degrees N., 73 degrees W., offshore New Jersey and New York (Online version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-152, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94152.","productDescription":"42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407092,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_12464.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":50188,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0152/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1140,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/of94-152/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":154015,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0152/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey, New York","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.25,\n              38.5833\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.833,\n              38.5833\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.833,\n              39.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.25,\n              39.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.25,\n              38.5833\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Online version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a605a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robb, James M.","contributorId":60225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robb","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183022,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These effects are well-described by empirical rate- and state-dependent constitutive formulations which have been utilized for analysis of fault slip and earthquake processes. We present a procedure for direct quantitative microscopic observation of frictional contacts during slip. The observations reveal that frictional state dependence represents an increase of contact area with contact age. Transient changes of sliding resistance correlate with changes in contact area and arise from shifts of contact population age. Displacement-dependent replacement of contact populations is shown to cause the diagnostic evolution of friction over a characteristic sliding distance that occurs whenever slip begins or sliding conditions change. ?? 1994 Birkha??user Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Birkha??user-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00874332","issn":"00334553","usgsCitation":"Dieterich, J.H., and Kilgore, B., 1994, Direct observation of frictional contacts: New insights for state-dependent properties: Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH, v. 143, no. 1-3, p. 283-302, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00874332.","startPage":"283","endPage":"302","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":205509,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00874332"},{"id":224568,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"143","issue":"1-3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a01b0e4b0c8380cd4fcfa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dieterich, James H.","contributorId":81614,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dieterich","given":"James","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":374978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kilgore, B.D.","contributorId":85728,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kilgore","given":"B.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":374979,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The slope, intercept, and degree of scatter of these log(k)-?? trends vary from formation to formation, and these variations are attributed to differences in initial grain size and sorting, diagenetic history, and compaction history. In unconsolidated sands, better sorting systematically increases both permeability and porosity. In sands and sandstones, an increase in gravel and coarse grain size content causes k to increase even while decreasing ??. Diagenetic minerals in the pore space of sandstones, such as cement and some clay types, tend to decrease log(k) proportionately as ?? decreases. Models to predict permeability from porosity and other measurable rock parameters fall into three classes based on either grain, surface area, or pore dimension considerations. (Models that directly incorporate well log measurements but have no particular theoretical underpinnings from a fourth class.) Grain-based models show permeability proportional to the square of grain size times porosity raised to (roughly) the fifth power, with grain sorting as an additional parameter. Surface-area models show permeability proportional to the inverse square of pore surface area times porosity raised to (roughly) the fourth power; measures of surface area include irreducible water saturation and nuclear magnetic resonance. Pore-dimension models show permeability proportional to the square of a pore dimension times porosity raised to a power of (roughly) two and produce curves of constant pore size that transgress the linear data trends on a log(k)-?? plot. The pore dimension is obtained from mercury injection measurements and is interpreted as the pore opening size of some interconnected fraction of the pore system. The linear log(k)-?? data trends cut the curves of constant pore size from the pore-dimension models, which shows that porosity reduction is always accompanied by a reduction in characteristic pore size. The high powers of porosity of the grain-based and surface-area models are required to compensate for the inclusion of the small end of the pore size spectrum.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Log Analyst","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"0024581X","usgsCitation":"Nelson, P.H., 1994, Permeability-porosity relationships in sedimentary rocks: Log Analyst, v. 35, no. 3, p. 38-62.","startPage":"38","endPage":"62","numberOfPages":"25","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224567,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"35","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a76b6e4b0c8380cd78292","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, Philip H. pnelson@usgs.gov","contributorId":862,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Philip","email":"pnelson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":374977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Although prescientific ideas about feeding fish existed in Egypt and China over three millennia ago, it was not until the 1700s that scientific studies of feeding and digestion by fish were documented. Aside from several books that provided early anecdotal accounts of feeds and feeding, much of the technical literature up to the 1930s is found in a few journals and relatively obscure bulletins. Such was the state of knowledge regarding the feeding of fish until about 1927 when Clive McCay, a professor at Yale University, and Abram Tunison, a hatchery worker, began some part‐time research on the nutritional requirements of trout at Connecticut's Burlington Fish Hatchery. In June 1932, these men founded an experimental hatchery, designed to study the nutrition, feeds, and feeding of fish, at Cortland, New York; this hatchery was operated under the auspices of the federal Bureau of Fisheries, the Conservation Department of New York State, and Cornell University. Over the next 25 years, it was research from this hatchery as well as from other federal, state, and university facilities that led to the development of purified test diets and the identification of the (unknown) growth factors in fresh meat, both essential criteria for scientific diet formulation, The first nutritionally complete diets appeared about 1955.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.1577/1548-8640(1994)056%3C0001:HOEDDI%3E2.3.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Rumsey, G.L., 1994, History of early diet development in fish culture, 1000 B.C. to A.D. 1955: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 56, no. 1, p. 1-6, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8640(1994)056%3C0001:HOEDDI%3E2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"6","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":132090,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"56","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62c41f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rumsey, G. Data for 1993 included in this report are from precipitation records from 10 National Weather Service stations, continuous water-level records from 72 wells, and chloride analyses from 13 wells.  Annual mean ground-water levels in Georgia in 1993 ranged from about 3.2 feet higher to about 9.6 feet lower than in 1992.  Of the 72 wells summarized in this report, 30 wells had annual mean water levels that were higher and 42 wells had annual mean water levels that were lower in 1993 than in 1992.  Record-high daily mean water levels were recorded in one well tapping the surficial aquifer, one well tapping the Upper Floridan aquifer, one well tapping the Claiborne aquifer, and one well tapping the crystalline- rock aquifers.  These record highs were from about 0.1 to 0.7 feet higher than previous record highs.  Record-low daily mean water levels were recorded in one well tapping the surficial aquifer, two wells tapping the Upper Floridan aquifer, four wells tapping the Cretaceous aquifer, one well tapping the Dublin-Midville aquifer system, and one well tapping the crystalline-rock aquifers.  These record lows were from about 0.1 foot to 7.2 feet lower than the previous record lows.  Chloride concentration in water from the Upper Floridan aquifer in most of coastal Georgia was below drinking water standards established by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has not changed appreciably with time. However, chloride concentration in water from some wells that tap the Floridan aquifer system in the Brunswick area exceeds the drinking water standards.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. A 5.4-m-long sediment core produced a stratigraphic and pollen record spanning the last 5200 yr. Three major zones are distinguishable in the core. The lowermost zone (5200 to 3250 yr B.P.) represents a time of arid climate with predominantly marine sediment input and high Chenopodiaceae and Ambrosia pollen values. The intermediate zone (3250 yr B.P. to 1800 A.D.) is characterized by greater fresh water input and high values for Asteraceae and Cyperaceae pollen and charcoal particles. The uppermost zone (1800 A.D. to present) documents the unprecedented erosion, sedimentation, and vegetation change that resulted from the introduction of large exotic herbivores and exotic plants to the island during Anglo-European settlement. The identification of pollen grains of Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) documents the persistence of this endemic species on the island throughout the middle to late Holocene.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Quaternary Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1006/qres.1994.1037","usgsCitation":"Cole, K., and Liu, G., 1994, Holocene paleoecology of an estuary on Santa Rosa Island, California: Quaternary Research, v. 41, no. 3, p. 326-335, https://doi.org/10.1006/qres.1994.1037.","productDescription":"p. 326-335","startPage":"326","endPage":"335","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266468,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1006/qres.1994.1037"},{"id":133331,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"41","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-01-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bf4b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cole, K.L.","contributorId":87507,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cole","given":"K.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":323193,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Liu, Gaisheng","contributorId":15158,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Liu","given":"Gaisheng","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":323192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
