The modular structure of MODFE places the computationally independent tasks that are performed routinely by digital-computer programs simulating ground-water flow into separate subroutines, which are executed from the main program by control statements. Each subroutine consists of complete sets of computations, or modules, which are identified by comment statements, and can be modified by the user without affecting unrelated computations elsewhere in the program. Simulation capabilities can be added or modified by either adding or modifying subroutines that perform specific computational tasks, and the modular-program structure allows the user to create versions of MODFE that contain only the simulation capabilities that pertain to the ground-water problem of interest. MODFE is written in a Fortran programming language that makes it virtually device independent and compatible with desk-top personal computers and large mainframes.\r\nMODFE uses computer storage and execution time efficiently by taking advantage of symmetry and sparseness within the coefficient matrices of the finite-element equations. Parts of the matrix coefficients are computed and stored as single-subscripted variables, which are assembled into a complete coefficient just prior to solution. Computer storage is reused during simulation to decrease storage requirements. Descriptions of subroutines that execute the computational steps of the modular-program structure are given in tables that cross reference the subroutines with particular versions of MODFE. Programming details of linear and nonlinear hydrologic terms are provided. Structure diagrams for the main programs show the order in which subroutines are executed for each version and illustrate some of the linear and nonlinear versions of MODFE that are possible. Computational aspects of changing stresses and boundary conditions with time and of mass-balance and error terms are given for each hydrologic feature. Program variables are listed and defined according to their occurrence in the main programs and in subroutines. Listings of the main programs and subroutines are given.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/twri06A5","usgsCitation":"Torak, L., 1993, A modular finite-element model (MODFE) for areal and axisymmetric ground-water-flow problems, Part 3: Design philosophy and programming details: U.S. Geological Survey Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations 06-A5, USGS-TWRI book 6, chap. The Castle Hayne aquifer furnishes about 7 million gallons of water per day to Camp Lejeune, but the surficial, Beaufort, and Peedee aquifers, which contain freshwater in places, are not used for supply.\n\nThe Castle Hayne aquifer is composed of 60 to 90 percent sand and limestone with clay and silt beds, and ranges from 156 to 400 feet thick. Hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer ranges from 14 to 91 feet per day.\n\nThe Castle Hayne confining unit, which overlies the Castle Hayne aquifer, is composed of silt and sandy clay and averages 9 feet thick where present. This confining unit is incised by the New River and its tributaries, as well as some paleochannels.\n\nThe effects of pumping from the Castle Hayne aquifer have not significantly affected natural head gradients in the aquifer. However, the potential exists for lateral migration of saltwater where wells are located near streams or paleochannels that have incised the confining unit.\n\nExcept for one measurement of 960 milligrams per liter chloride in a water sample from the bottom of the Castle Hayne aquifer, dissolved-chloride concentrations in water samples from the Castle Hayne aquifer were less than 120 milligrams per liter. It is not known whether this occurrence of saltwater in the Castle Hayne aquifer is widespread or localized, but its presence indicates a potential for upward movement of saltwater beneath pumped wells.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri934049","usgsCitation":"Cardinell, A.P., Berg, S.A., and Lloyd, O.B., 1993, Hydrogeologic framework of U.S. Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4049, Report: iv, 45 p.; 1 Plate: 19.35 x 25.64 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934049.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 45 p.; 1 Plate: 19.35 x 25.64 inches","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":411669,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47774.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55313,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4049/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":122819,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4049/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":55312,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4049/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","city":"Jacksonville","otherGeospatial":"Camp Lejeune","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.5,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5,\n              34.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.25,\n              34.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.25,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.5,\n              34.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db6252ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cardinell, A. The biological and chemical data for each well were grouped according to eight of the nine principal aquifers in the State and analyzed for local and regional variation within and among these aquifers. Water samples from 45 percent of the wells statewide tested positive for fecal cot[form or streptococci bacteria. Regionally, samples from 20 percent of the wells in the primarily unconsoli- dated sedimentary aquifers in western Tennessee tested positive for either or both bacteria, compared with samples from 54 percent of the wells in the consolidated bedrock aquifers in the central and eastern parts of the State. Although nitrate nitrogen equaled or exceeded the 10.0 milligrams per liter primary drinking-water standard in only 3 percent of the wells sampled statewide, samples from 20 percent of the wells had nitrate nitrogen concentrations that exceeded 3.00 milligrams per liter possibly indicating human influence on ground-water quality. Estimated total concentrations of organic compounds were less than 5 micrograms per liter in samples from 92 percent of the wells statewide. Concentrations of iron and manganese equaled or exceeded their secondary standards of 300 and 50 micrograms per liter in samples from 35 and 25 percent of the wells, respectively, with the largest concentrations identified in samples from the alluvial and Pennsylvanian sandstone aquifers. Samples from 25 percent of the wells, had a pH below the lower secondary standard of 6.5 units, with most of these samples from the unconsolidated sedimentary aquifers in western Tennessee.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBooks and Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri924186","usgsCitation":"Carmichael, J.K., and Bennett, M.W., 1993, Reconnaissance of quality of water from farmstead wells in Tennessee, 1989-90: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4186, iv, 43 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm. Three necessary but probably not sufficient conditions for the formation of these deposits were defined as the occurrence of carbonate berain rocks within hypabyssal depths, significant fracturing of the rocks, and proximity to a felsic intrusive.  The quality of data available to evaluate these conditions is variable over the study area.  The possibility of each condition was represented as a fuzzy set enumerated over the area.  The intersection of the sets measures the degree of simultaneous occurrence of hte necessary factors and provides a measure of the possibility of deposit occurrence.  Using fuzzy set technicques, the effect of one or more fuzzy sets relative to the others in the intersection can be controlled and logical combinations of the sets can be used to impose a time sequential constraint on the necessary conditions.  Other necessary conditions, and supplementary conditions such as variable data quality or intensity of exploration can be included in the analysis by their proper representation as fuzzy sets.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr93392","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., and Bultman, M.W., 1993, Quantifying favorableness for occurrence of a mineral deposit type using fuzzy logic; an example from Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-392, 23 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93392.","productDescription":"23 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151070,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1102,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/ofr-93-0392/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db68604d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, Mark E. 0000-0002-2910-2321 mgetting@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2910-2321","contributorId":602,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gettings","given":"Mark","email":"mgetting@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":180250,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bultman, Mark W. 0000-0001-8352-101X mbultman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8352-101X","contributorId":3348,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bultman","given":"Mark","email":"mbultman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":180251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Water-quality monitoring stations existing before 1988 were at or near the mouths of tributaries flowing into Lake Mead on the Colorado River below multiple sources of dissolved solids. Thus, data were insufficient to assess what percentage of the overall dissolved-solids contribution to the Colorado River comes from public lands. To assess that contribution in southeastern Nevada, four streamflow and water-quality stations were established, one each on Pahranagat Wash, Muddy River, Meadow Valley Wash, and Las Vegas Wash. Streamflow data and specific-conductance data (an indirect, approximate measure of dissolved-solids concentration) were recorded half-hourly at Pahranagat Wash and Las Vegas Wash, and hourly at Muddy River and Meadow Valley Wash. In addition, water samples were collected during station visits and analyzed for instantaneous specific conductance and dissolved-solids concentration. Additional water samples were collected during selected periods of storm runoff. Data collected at the four sites from October 1988 through September 1991 are presented in tabular format in this report. These data provide information for characterizing the dissolved-solids contribution from public lands in southeastern Nevada to the Colorado River.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Services [distributer],","doi":"10.3133/ofr93439","usgsCitation":"Gortsema, G., 1993, Selected data on water quantity and quality at four sites on streams draining public lands, Colorado River basin, southeastern Nevada, October 1988 - September 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-439, iv, 31 p. :map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93439.","productDescription":"iv, 31 p. :map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":150697,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0439/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48579,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0439/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e3e4b07f02db5e5740","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gortsema, G.C.","contributorId":17631,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gortsema","given":"G.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180332,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water-quality data from 116 shallow wells were segregated by land use. Nonparametric statistical analysis indicate that 27 water-quality variables differ at the 0.05 significance level for samples from at least one land-use area. Most constituent concentrations or detection frequencies are lowest in samples from undeveloped areas. Groundwater quality is more adversely affected in tilled than untilled agricultural areas. Twenty percent of wells in tilled areas yielded water with nitrogen concentrations > 10 mg/L. Atrazine was detected in one-third of the wells in tilled areas. Median concentrations of most inorganic constituents are higher in sewered than in unsewered residential areas. One or more of 17 volatile organic compounds were detected in 62 percent of wells in unsewered areas. Chloroform was detected in sewered areas significantly more often than in undeveloped, tilled agricultural, and unsewered residential areas. Water beneath commercial areas is most adversely affected. Median sodium, chloride, and dissolved solids concentrations are highest in samples from commercial areas. Tetrachloroethylene was detected in 50 percent of wells in commercial areas at concentrations up to 1,300 microg/L. Trichloroethylene and 1,2-transdichloroethylene were found in more than 40 percent of wells in commercial areas. In industrial areas, 91% of the wells sampled contained 1 or more of 12 volatile organic compounds. Chloroform was the most commonly detected compound followed by tetrachloroethylene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
