The potentiometric surface was highest near the northwestern boundary and outcrop area of the aquifer in topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. Regionally, the potentiometric surface sloped gently downward toward the southeast, and the local gradients were directed toward the centers of 3 cones of depression that have developed in response to pumping. These cones were centered around well fields in the Annapolis, Waldorf, and Chalk Point areas. Groundwater levels were more than 50 feet below sea level in the Waldorf area, nearly 50 feet below sea level at Chalk Point, and greater than 10 feet below sea level near Annapolis.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr93653","usgsCitation":"Curtin, S.E., Andreasen, D.C., and Mack, F., 1993, Potentiometric surface of the Magothy Aquifer in southern Maryland, September 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-653, 1 map :photocopy ;22 x 17 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93653.","productDescription":"1 map :photocopy ;22 x 17 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":171228,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0653/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":79067,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0653/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db682f54","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtin, Stephen E. securtin@usgs.gov","contributorId":3703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtin","given":"Stephen","email":"securtin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":224764,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andreasen, D. All significant components of the lake's water budget were determined independently. The lake's trophic state was evaluated in relation to total-phosphorus loading from December 1, 1987 through November 30, 1989. The information obtained in the study can be used by local and State agencies to develop and assess lake- and watershed-management alternatives for maintaining or improving the water quality of the lake.
\n
The three-basin, 1,900-acre drainage lake receives flow from two main tributary streams, Harder and Rice Creeks. Precipitation, ground-water levels, and streamflow were below normal during the study period and the year preceding the study. Precipitation was 6.09 inches below normal the first year of the study and 8.71 inches the second year.
\n
Precipitation, the dominant water-budget inflow component, was followed in decreasing order by inflows from Rice Creek, ground water, Harder Creek, and near-lake drainage. Total inflows in the first and second years of the study were 11,040 and 11,650 acre-feet, respectively. Surface inflow was 23 percent greater in the second year of the study than in the first year.
\n
The largest outflow from Balsam Lake was outflow to Balsam Branch, and the second largest outflow was evaporation. These outflows accounted for 98 percent of outflow from the lake. Recharge to ground water accounted for 2 percent.
\n
Total-phosphorus input to the lake was 692 and 1,144 pounds in the first and second years of the study. Rice Creek and near-lake drainage accounted for 80 percent of phosphorus entering the lake. Outflow to Balsam Branch removed 30 percent of the phosphorus that entered the lake.
\n
The main basin of the lake was mesotrophic, whereas the loading rates determined for the study period would have expected to result in oligotrophic conditions. Internal loading and below-normal external loading during the study are the likely explanation for this discrepancy. The northwest basin of the lake (locally called \"Little Balsam Lake\") received 66 percent of all external phosphorus that entered Balsam Lake. The trophic state of Little Balsam Lake ranged from upper mesotrophic to lower eutrophic. Phosphorus that entered Little Balsam Lake during the study period would have been expected to result in eutrophic conditions.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri914125","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Balsam Lake Rehabilitation and Protection District","usgsCitation":"Rose, W.J., 1993, Water and phosphorus budgets and trophic state, Balsam Lake, northwestern Wisconsin, 1987-1989: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 91-4125, vi, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri914125.","productDescription":"vi, 28 p.","numberOfPages":"34","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159783,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1991/4125/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58280,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1991/4125/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Polk County","otherGeospatial":"Half Moon Lake, Harder Creek, Little Balsam Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.56462097167969,\n              45.39531595686596\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.56462097167969,\n              45.53425085438269\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.32498168945312,\n              45.53425085438269\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.32498168945312,\n              45.39531595686596\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.56462097167969,\n              45.39531595686596\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa377","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rose, W. Correlation techniques were used to estimate annual data for unmeasured years. Annual stream discharge in the main stem of the White River ranged from about 200,000 to about 1 million acre-feet. Generally, bedload was less than/= 3.3 percent of total sediment load. Annual suspended-sediment loads ranged from about 2,100 tons at the upstream sites on the North Fork and South Fork of the White River to about 2 million tons at the most downstream site. Average annual suspended-sediment loads ranged from about 11,000 tons at the upstream sites to about 705,000 tons at the most downstream site. Annual capacity losses in a 50,000 acre-ft reservoir could range from less than 0.01 percent near upstream sites to about 2.5 percent near downstream sites. Maximum water temperatures in the White River ranged from less than 20 to 25 C in summer.  Specific conductance ranged from 200 to 1,000 microsiemens/cm. Generally, values of pH ranged from 7.6 to 8.8, and concentrations of dissolved oxygen were greater than 6.0 mg/L. In small streamflows, values of pH and dissolved oxygen were affected by biologic processes. Composition of dissolved solids in the White River was mostly calcium, bicarbonate, and(or) sulfate. Changes in the composition of dissolved solids caused by the changes in the concentrations of sodium and sulfate were greatest in small stream discharges. Annual loads of dissolved solids ranged from 21,100 tons in the South Fork to about 480,000 tons at the most downstream site. Total solids transport in the White River was mostly as dissolved solids at upstream sites and mostly as suspended sediment at downstream sites. Concentration ranges of nutrients and trace constituents were determined.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri924031","usgsCitation":"Tobin, R., 1993, Sediment transport and water-quality characteristics and loads, White River, northwestern Colorado, water years 1975-88: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4031, v, 69 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri924031.","productDescription":"v, 69 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159268,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4031/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58962,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4031/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e479de4b07f02db4920f1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tobin, R.L.","contributorId":34143,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tobin","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202789,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

One was to present a catalog of seismic background noise spectra obtained from a worldwide network of seismograph stations. The other purpose was to refine and document models of seismic background noise that have been in use for several years. The second objective was, in fact, the principal reason that this study was initiated and influenced the procedures used in collecting and processing the data.

With a single exception, all of the data used in this study were extracted from the digital data archive at the U.S. Geological Survey's Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory (ASL). This archive dates from 1972 when ASL first began deploying digital seismograph systems and collecting and distributing digital data under the sponsorship of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). There have been many changes and additions to the global seismograph networks during the past twenty years, but perhaps none as significant as the current deployment of very broadband seismographs by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) under the scientific direction of the IRIS consortium. The new data acquisition systems have extended the bandwidth and resolution of seismic recording, and they utilize high-density recording media that permit the continuous recording of broadband data. The data improvements and continuous recording greatly benefit and simplify surveys of seismic background noise.

Although there are many other sources of digital data, the ASL archive data were used almost exclusively because of accessibility and because the data systems and their calibration are well documented for the most part. Fortunately, the ASL archive contains high-quality data from other stations in addition to those deployed by the USGS. Included are data from UCSD IRIS/IDA stations, the Regional Seismic Test Network (RSTN) deployed by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), and the TERRAscope network deployed by the California Institute of Technology in cooperation with other institutions.

A map showing the approximate locations of the stations used in this study is provided in Figure 1. One might hope for a better distribution of stations in the southern hemisphere, especially Africa and South America, in order to look for regional variations in seismic noise (apart from the major differences between continental, coastal and island sites). Unfortunately, anyone looking for subtle regional variations in seismic noise is probably going to be disappointed by the spectral data presented in this report because much of the station data appear to be dominated by local disturbances caused by instrumental, environmental, cultural, or surf noise. Better instruments and better instrument siting, or a well-funded field program, will be needed before a global isoseismal noise map can be produced. However, by assembling a composite of background noise from a large network of stations, many of the local station variables are masked, and it is possible to create generalized spectral plots of Earth noise for hypothetical quiet and noisy station sites.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr93322","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J.R., 1993, Observations and modeling of seismic background noise: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-322, 94 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr93322.","productDescription":"94 p.","costCenters":[{"id":122,"text":"Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":152582,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0322/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":49988,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1993/0322/ofr93-322.pdf","text":"Report","size":"5.15 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1993-0322"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db696514","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, Jon R.","contributorId":61062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"Jon","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182668,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Results of the intersite- comparison program indicate that 80 and 74 percent of the site operators met the NADP/NTN goals for pH determination and 98 and 95 percent of the site operators met the NADP/NTN goals for specific- conductance determination during the two studies in 1990. The effects of routine sample handling, processing, and shipping determined in the blind-audit program indicated significant positive bias for calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, nitrate, and sulfate. Significant negative bias was determined for hydrogen ion and specific conductance. A Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that there were no significant (a=0.01) differences in analytical results from the three laboratories participating in the interlaboratory-comparison program. Results from the collocated-sampler study indicate the median relative error for potassium and ammonium concentration and deposition exceeded 15 percent at most sites while the median relative error for sulfate and nitrate at all sites was less than 6 percent for concentration and was less than 15 percent for deposition.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri924104","usgsCitation":"Pettijohn, R.A., Busby, J., and Cervantes, M.A., 1993, Properties and chemical constituents in ground water from the middle Claiborne Aquifer, Gulf Coast regional aquifer systems, south-central United States: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4104, 17 maps on 5 sheets : col. ; each 38 x 41 cm., sheets 97 x 97 cm. or smaller, folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri924104.","productDescription":"17 maps on 5 sheets : col. ; each 38 x 41 cm., sheets 97 x 97 cm. or smaller, folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":170584,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":82093,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4104/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82094,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4104/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82095,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4104/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82096,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4104/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82097,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4104/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db6495c6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pettijohn, Robert A.","contributorId":77502,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pettijohn","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230410,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Busby, John F.","contributorId":42186,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busby","given":"John F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230408,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cervantes, Michael A.","contributorId":76385,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cervantes","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230409,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Underlying about 42,000 mi2 of west-central Texas, the Edwards-Trinity aquifer system extends approximately from Atascosa County in the southeast to Culberson County in the northwest and from the Rio Grande in the southwest to the Colorado River in the northeast (sheet 2). The Edwards-Trinity aquifer system spans four geographic subareas: Trans-Pecos, Edwards Plateau, Hill Country, and Balcones fault zone (fig. 1). The names of all aquifers in the study area were adopted for RASA purposes directly from nomenclature mandated by the Texas Water Plan (Texas Water Development Board, 1990).
\n
The Cretaceous rocks that compose the Edwards-Trinity aquifer system are primarily limestone and dolomite rock, with lesser quantities of terrigenous sand. Although the lithology varies locally and the rocks are not everywhere permeable in all directions, they combine to form a single regional aquifer system. The aquifer system comprises three aquifers and two confining units (figs. 2 and 3). The water-yielding units are the Edwards aquifer of the Balcones fault zone, the Trinity aquifer of the Balcones fault zone and Hill Country, and the Edwards-Trinity aquifer of the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos. The confining units are the Hammett confining unit, which confines basal parts of the Trinity aquifer in the Hill Country and the Edwards-Trinity aquifer in the eastern part of the Edwards Plateau, and the Navarro-Del Rio confining unit, which confines the Edwards and Trinity aquifers along the southeastern margin of the Balcones fault zone. Parts of the aquifer system not overlain by one of these confining units are unconfined, or nearly so.
\n
The purposes of this report are to illustrate the historical distribution of saturated thickness (hereafter referred to as the saturated thickness) in the Edwards-Trinity aquifer system, summarize the reasons for the variation in the saturated thickness, and relate the regional effects of this variation to the distribution of transmissivity. The saturated thickness map (sheet 2) was determined for most of the area by subtracting the altitude of the base of the aquifer system (Barker and Ardis, 1992) from the altitude of the historical potentiometric surface (Bush and others, 1993). Where the Edwards and Trinity aquifers are confined in the Balcones fault zone, the saturated thickness is defined by the thickness of the aquifer system, which was determined by subtracting the altitude of the base of the aquifer system from the altitude of the base of the Navarro-Del Rio confining unit (G.E. Groschen and W.G. Stein, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun, 1990).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri924125","usgsCitation":"Ardis, A.F., and Barker, R.A., 1993, Historical saturated thickness of the Edwards-Trinity aquifer system and selected contiguous hydraulically connected units, west-central Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4125, 2 Plates: 36.50 x 25.82 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri924125.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 36.50 x 25.82 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":326558,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri924125.JPG"},{"id":414054,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47680.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":82012,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4125/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":82011,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4125/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Edwards-Trinity aquifer system","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104,\n              32\n            ],\n            [\n              -104,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.7667,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.7667,\n              32\n            ],\n            [\n              -104,\n              32\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a58e4b07f02db62eb42","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ardis, Ann F.","contributorId":96672,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ardis","given":"Ann","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230310,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barker, Rene A.","contributorId":82669,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barker","given":"Rene","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230309,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
