The potentiometric surface was highest near the northwestern boundary and outcrop area of the aquifer in topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. Regionally, the potentiometric surface sloped gently downward toward the southeast, and the local gradients were directed toward the centers of 3 cones of depression that have developed in response to pumping. These cones were centered around well fields in the Annapolis, Waldorf, and Chalk Point areas. All significant components of the lake's water budget were determined independently. The lake's trophic state was evaluated in relation to total-phosphorus loading from December 1, 1987 through November 30, 1989. The information obtained in the study can be used by local and State agencies to develop and assess lake- and watershed-management alternatives for maintaining or improving the water quality of the lake.
\n
The three-basin, 1,900-acre drainage lake receives flow from two main tributary streams, Harder and Rice Creeks. Precipitation, ground-water levels, and streamflow were below normal during the study period and the year preceding the study. Precipitation was 6.09 inches below normal the first year of the study and 8.71 inches the second year.
\n
Precipitation, the dominant water-budget inflow component, was followed in decreasing order by inflows from Rice Creek, ground water, Harder Creek, and near-lake drainage. Total inflows in the first and second years of the study were 11,040 and 11,650 acre-feet, respectively. Surface inflow was 23 percent greater in the second year of the study than in the first year.
\n
The largest outflow from Balsam Lake was outflow to Balsam Branch, and the second largest outflow was evaporation. These outflows accounted for 98 percent of outflow from the lake. Recharge to ground water accounted for 2 percent.
\n
Total-phosphorus input to the lake was 692 and 1,144 pounds in the first and second years of the study. Rice Creek and near-lake drainage accounted for 80 percent of phosphorus entering the lake. Outflow to Balsam Branch removed 30 percent of the phosphorus that entered the lake.
\n
The main basin of the lake was mesotrophic, whereas the loading rates determined for the study period would have expected to result in oligotrophic conditions. Internal loading and below-normal external loading during the study are the likely explanation for this discrepancy. Correlation techniques were used to estimate annual data for unmeasured years. Annual stream discharge in the main stem of the White River ranged from about 200,000 to about 1 million acre-feet. Generally, bedload was less than/= 3.3 percent of total sediment load. Annual suspended-sediment loads ranged from about 2,100 tons at the upstream sites on the North Fork and South Fork of the White River to about 2 million tons at the most downstream site. Average annual suspended-sediment loads ranged from about 11,000 tons at the upstream sites to about 705,000 tons at the most downstream site. Annual capacity losses in a 50,000 acre-ft reservoir could range from less than 0.01 percent near upstream sites to about 2.5 percent near downstream sites. Maximum water temperatures in the White River ranged from less than 20 to 25 C in summer. Specific conductance ranged from 200 to 1,000 microsiemens/cm. Generally, values of pH ranged from 7.6 to 8.8, and concentrations of dissolved oxygen were greater than 6.0 mg/L. In small streamflows, values of pH and dissolved oxygen were affected by biologic processes. Composition of dissolved solids in the White River was mostly calcium, bicarbonate, and(or) sulfate. Changes in the composition of dissolved solids caused by the changes in the concentrations of sodium and sulfate were greatest in small stream discharges. Annual loads of dissolved solids ranged from 21,100 tons in the South Fork to about 480,000 tons at the most downstream site. Total solids transport in the White River was mostly as dissolved solids at upstream sites and mostly as suspended sediment at downstream sites. Concentration ranges of nutrients and trace constituents were determined.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri924031","usgsCitation":"Tobin, R., 1993, Sediment transport and water-quality characteristics and loads, White River, northwestern Colorado, water years 1975-88: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4031, v, 69 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri924031.","productDescription":"v, 69 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159268,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4031/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58962,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1992/4031/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e479de4b07f02db4920f1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tobin, R.L.","contributorId":34143,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tobin","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202789,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Pulses of diazinon were observed in early February 1993 in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers after heavy rains, with elevated concentrations measured for a few days to weeks at a time. The pulse of diazinon in the Sacramento River was followed from Sacramento through Suisun Bay, the eastward embayment of San Francisco Bay. In the central delta, well-defined pulses of diazinon were not observed at the Old and Middle River sites; instead, the concentrations steadily increased throughout February. Ceriodaphnia dubia mortality was 100% in water samples collected for 12 consecutive days (February 8-19) from the San Joaquin River at Vernalis. The bioassay mortality corresponded with the peak diazinon concentrations. Conversely, no toxicity was observed in water collected before or after peaks of diazinon concentration. The goal of this research is to understand the geology, tectonics, and hydrology of the Cascades in order to characterize and quantify geothermal resource potential. A major goal of the program is compilation of a comprehensive geologic map of the entire Cascade Range that incorporates modern field studies and that has a unified and internally consistent explanation.
\n

\n
This map is one of a series presently being compiled that shows Cascade Range geology by fitting published and unpublished mapping into a province-wide scheme of lithostratigraphic units; map sheets of the Cascade Range in California and in Oregon complete the series. The complete series forms a guide to exploration and evaluation of the geothermal resources of the Cascade Range and will be useful for studies of volcanic hazards, volcanology, and tectonics.
\n

\n
For geothermal reasons, the maps emphasize Quaternary volcanic rocks. Large igneous-related geothermal systems that have high temperatures are associated with Quaternary volcanic fields, and geothermal potential declines rapidly as age increases (Smith and Shaw, 1975). Most high-grade recoverable geothermal energy is likely to be associated with silicic volcanism less than 1 Ma. Lower grade (= lower temperature) geothermal resources may be associated with somewhat older rocks; however, volcanic rocks older than about 2 Ma are unlikely geothermal targets (Smith and Shaw, 1975).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/i2005","collaboration":"The digital database for this map is available as USGS Data Series 842","usgsCitation":"Smith, J., 1993, Geologic map of upper Eocene to Holocene volcanic and related rocks in the Cascade Range, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 2005, Report: 19 p.; 2 Sheets: 173.33 x 150.68 inches and 27.25 x 40.04 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/i2005.","productDescription":"Report: 19 p.; 2 Sheets: 173.33 x 150.68 inches and 27.25 x 40.04 inches","numberOfPages":"20","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":296285,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2005/"},{"id":296286,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2005/pdf/i2005_geomap_sheet1.pdf","text":"Sheet 1","size":"18.7 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":296287,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2005/pdf/i2005_refmap_sheet2.pdf","text":"Sheet 2","size":"8.7 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":107246,"rank":6,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_10076.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"10076"},{"id":256514,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2005/pdf/i2005_report.pdf","size":"2 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":256515,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/2005/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"500000","projection":"Lambert Conformal Conic projection","datum":"National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1928","country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Cascade Range","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -123,45.5 ], [ -123,49 ], [ -120,49 ], [ -120,45.5 ], [ -123,45.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db68878f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, James G.","contributorId":44534,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"James G.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":275697,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Mineralized rock is confined primarily to steeply dipping structures in silicified rhyolite and dacite. Intense sericitic alteration occurs at higher levels in the vein system, and wall rock adjacent to some veins is bleached. The ores are multiply brecciated, and vein filling locally shows sedimentary textures.
\n
Textural, mineralogical, and chemical criteria indicate that there are at least two partially coextensive associations of mineral assemblages separated by periods of brecciation and sedimentation. An older gold-bearing association consists of two fine-grained ore stages, both of which contain electrum, uytenbogaardtite, tetrahedrite, silver sulfosalts, silver sulfides and base-metal sulfides, and a manganese-rich stage containing the assemblages (1) manganese silicate + manganese carbonate minerals + quartz and (2) magnetite + hematite + pyrite + quartz. A younger crosscutting association contains calcite, adularia, fluorite, and quartz, plus the assemblages (1) coarse-grained basemetal sulfides and (2) hematite + chlorite + quartz. Quartz, manganese-rich calcite, and trace pyrite line late-stage vugs.
\n
Mineralogic, lead-isotopic, and fluid-inclusion characteristics of the younger association are similar to those of ores of the southern and central parts of the Creede mining district. In contrast, the gold and manganese-silicate assemblages of the older association are rare to absent in the southern and central parts of the district. The local and early occurrence of the manganese and gold assemblages may indicate that they formed in a small hydrothermal cell that predated the extensive hydrothermal system from which ores of the central and southern parts of the Creede district are proposed to have been deposited (Bethke, 1988). The 1992 winter balance, averaged over the glacier, was 1.91 m, and the net balance was -2.01 m. This extremely negative balance continued a trend of negative balance years beginning in 1977. Air temperature (at 1,615 m and 1,867 m), barometric pressure, precipitation, and runoff from this glacier basin and an adjacent non-glacierized basin were also continuously measured.
