Samples were analyzed for 11 herbicides, 2 dealkylated atrazine metabolites, and 4 nutrients. Specific conductance, pH, and dissolved-oxygen concentrations of the ground water were measured onsite. Ancillary data on well construction, hydrogeology, and land use also were obtained for each well.

Present-day channel instability is the result of both human-made and natural factors. The primary factor is channelization of the river in Evanston, where several meander loops were cut off artificially during early development of the city. Other contributing factors include channel-width constrictions, bank stabilization, isolated bend cutoffs upstream from the city, and flooding in 1983 and 1984. A geomorphic analysis of bankfull-channel pattern, based on four aerial photographs taken during 1946-86, quantified geomorphic properties (reach sinuosity, bend sinuosity, bend radius of curvature, and bed length) that are characteristic of the study reach. The reach sinuosity of reach 2 (the channelized reach in Evanston) was 1.18 in 1986 and remained about the same throughout the period (1946-86). The reach sinuosity of reach 2 prior to channelization was substantially larger, about 2.3 as determined from maps prepared before 1946. Hydraulic analysis of the present-day channel (surveyed 1981-87) using a one-dimensional water-surface-profile computer model identified a bankfull discharge for the study reach of 3,600 cu ft/sec. A comparison of bankfull hydraulic properties for reaches 1, 2, and 3 indicated that the effects in reach 2 of channelization and channel-width constriction--increased slope, faster velocities, and greater hydraulic radii. This project was supported by funding from the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Over 2200 km of multichannel seismic-reflection data on 42 profiles and over 500 km of seismic-refraction data on 4 OBS profiles were acquired during this study. On board seismic processing facilities were utilized for quality control and demultiplexing of seismic data during the cruise. Lost survey time due to weather was about 7 days, but most planned seismic profiling was completed, including the reshooting of profiles where necessary. This seismic study was carried out on two vessels, the RV BALKHASH for MCS work and the TITOV for OBS deployments. This report summarizes the general seismic program and the operations on the BALKHASH. Operations on the TITOV are summarized in a companion report by tenBrink and others. A detailed description of the logistical and technical aspects of the seismic program, including all seismic systems, is given in the companion report by Nichols and others.

In Taos County, ground water generally is unconfined and moves toward the Rio Grande or perennial streams. Water quality is good except in some areas where water has high values of specific conductance and hardness and contains high concentrations of dissolved solids and fluoride. Most wells are completed in alluvial sediments of Quaternary and Tertiary age in the Costilla Plains. A few wells are completed in basalt of the Taos Plateau and in alluvium of stream channels in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Depths to water in wells range from less than 1 to 1,080 feet below land surface. Well yields range from 1 to 3,000 gallons per minute. Water levels in wells in Sunshine Valley dropped 5 to 50 feet between 1955 and 1970. Ground-water irrigation has since declined and water levels have risen. Surface-water records show the county is a net producer of water. The average discharge gained in the Rio Grande as it flows through the county was 271,700 acre-feet per year for water years 1931-89. The highest mean monthly discharge occurs in May or June due to snowmelt runoff. Water quality ranges from good in upstream reaches to fair in lower reaches. Surface water was the source for 93 percent of water withdrawn in 1990, but ground water was used for all public supply, domestic, and industrial purposes. The largest water use is irrigation. About 28,500 acres were irrigated in 1990; alfalfa, native pasture, and planted pasture accounted for 91 percent of this acreage.

Total water withdrawn for public supply in Florida during 1990 averaged 1,925 million gal/day. Public suppliers served 11.23 million residents, in 1990. Groundwater was the source for more than 88 percent (1,699 million gal/day) of public-supply withdrawals and was used by more than 10.0 million residents; surface water was the source of the remaining 12 percent (226 million gal/day) and was used by about 1.2 million residents. The Floridan aquifer system was the source of the majority of groundwater in 1990 (50 percent), followed by the Biscayne aquifer (34 percent). Public-supply water withdrawals peaked in May 1990 at 2,140 million gal/day, primarily because of an increase in the residential demands for lawn irrigation. During 1990, withdrawals for January were lowest (1,870 million gal/day), nearly 270 million gal/day less than in May. Public-supply per capita use for Florida in 1990 was 171 gal/day and domestic (residential) per capita use was 111 gal/day. The population of Florida increased from 9.75 million in 1980 to more than 12.94 million in 1990, and the percentage of the population served by public supply increased from 80 percent in 1980 to 87 percent in 1990. Public-supply water with- drawals in Florida increased 41 percent between 1980 and 1990 even though public supply per capita use has remained fairly consistent since 1980. Public water suppliers in Dade County withdrew the largest amount of water (326 million gal/day) for public supply in the State for 1990 and served nearly 1.88 million people. Two models were developed in the eastern Arkansas study area with the Arkansas River dividing the study area and functioning as a hydrologic boundary to the models. Both models simulate groundwater flow in one layer with recharge entering the aquifer from head-dependent surface infiltration through the overlying confining unit and from seepage through river beds. Digital models were used to simulate flow in the aquifer during seven stress periods between 1918 and 1987. Pumpage used in the simulations ranged from 83,400,000 to 412,000,000 cu ft/d in the north model and from 12,800,000 to 58,500,000 cu ft/d in the south model. Three different spatial and temporal pumpage scenarios were tested to simulate pumpage stress in the models. The pumpage distribution used in the calibrated model was based on a combination of all three scenarios. Several criteria were used during model development to determine how well the model simulated conditions in the aquifer. Potentiometric maps of model-computed water levels were compared to measured data to check the computed water levels and direction of flow. Hydrographs of observation wells were compared to computed water levels at corresponding model cells to assess the temporal distribution of pumpage. A root-mean-square error analysis was performed during calibration by comparing observation-well and model-computed water levels for 1972. Sensitivity analyses were performed to determine the effects of changes in input parameters on computed heads (water levels).
