Over 400 drainage wells have been drilled in the county, but many are now redundant because of surface drainage systems that have been installed within the last two or three decades. Most of the drainage wells emplace water into the Upper Floridan aquifer, a zone of high transmissivity within the Floridan aquifer system. In 1992, the Orange County Stormwater Management Department identified 23 wells that were considered noncritical or redundant for current drainage control. These wells were targeted for closure to eliminate maintenance and possible contamination problems. A 3-year study (1992 through 1994) encompassed several drainage basins in the county. Inflow to 18 of the 23 drainage wells on the noncritical list and the effects of closure of these noncritical wells on the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer were estimated. Three sites were chosen for intensive study and were used for further extrapolation to other noncritical sites. The total average annual recharge rate through the 18 selected wells was estimated to be 9 cubic feet per second, or about 6 million gallons per day. The highest rate of long-term recharge, 4.6 cubic feet per second, was to well H-35. Several wells on the noncritical list were already plugged or had blocked intakes. Yields, or the sum of surface-water outflows and drainage-well recharge, from the drainage basins ranged from 20 to 33 inches per year. In some of the basins, all the yield from the basin was recharge through a drainage well. In other basins, most of the yield was surface outflow through canals rather than to drainage wells. The removal of the recharge from closure of the wells was simulated by superposition in a three-dimensional ground-water flow model. As a second step in the model, water was also applied to two sites in western Orange County that could receive redirected surface water. One of the sites is CONSERV II, a distribution system used to apply reclaimed water to the surficial aquifer system through rapid infiltration basins and grove irrigation. The second site, Lake Sherwood, has an extremely high downward recharge rate estimated to be at least 54 inches per year. The results from the simulations showed a decline of 1 foot or less in the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer with removal of the recharge and a mound of about 1 foot in the vicinity of the two sites in western Orange County. The Lake Sherwood site seems to reduce the declines caused by closure of the wells to a greater degree than the CONSERV II site, partly because the Lake Sherwood site is closer to the drainage-well basins.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr96316","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Bradner, L.A., 1996, Estimation of recharge through selected drainage wells and potential effects from well closure, Orange County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-316, v, 30 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96316.","productDescription":"v, 30 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","numberOfPages":"35","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155330,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0316/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52044,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0316/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d857","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bradner, L. Because of differences in the formulation and calculation of the conductance terms, the conductance values for the head-dependent source-sink functions from the Trescott-Larson Twin Cities model were multiplied by the area of the appropriate model cell for conversion to the McDonald-Harbaugh Twin Cities model. Leaky rivers were simulated using the river package in the McDonald-Harbaugh Twin Cities model, springs and seepage faces were simulated using the drain package, and head-dependent flux boundaries were simulated using the general-head boundary package.
\n
Hydraulic heads and flows in the aquifer system calculated by the McDonald-Harbaugh Twin Cities model were compared to those calculated by the Trescott-Larson Twin Cities model to verify that the results calculated by the two models are similar. Mean differences in calculated hydraulic heads for the drift, drift and St. Peter aquifer, and drift and Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer model layers ranged from 1.1 to 1.6 feet. Mean differences in calculated hydraulic heads for the drift and Ironton-Galesville aquifer, drift and Eau Claire confining unit, and drift and Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer model layers were 0.4 feet or less. Large differences in calculated hydraulic heads at a few cells probably were due to differences in the solution methods used in the McDonald-Harbaugh and Trescott-Larson computer codes to calculate hydraulic heads at and near model layer boundaries.
\n
Differences in calculated flow rates for the McDonald-Harbaugh and Trescott-Larson Twin Cities models were less than 0.3 cubic feet per second for recharge and the head-dependent source-sink functions. Differences in calculated flow in and flow out of constant-head cells for each model layer for the two models ranged from about 2 cubic feet per second for the Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer model layer to about 45 cubic feet per second for the Prairie du ChienJordan aquifer model layer. The differences between the net flow rates at constant-head cells calculated by the two models for each model layer were much smaller, ranging from 0.01 cubic feet per second for the Ironton-Galesville and Mount Simon-Hinckley aquifer model layers to 8.39 cubic feet per second for the St. Peter aquifer model layer. Differences in the calculated ground-water budgets for the two models were 5.3 percent for the total sources and 4.4 percent for the total sinks.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Features were examined at 11 sites in the Contoocook, Souhegan, and Piscataquog Drainage Basins to illustrate the geologic history of this area, about 14,000 years ago, during the time of deglaciation. The Contoocook River Basin is the largest river basin that drains north in New Hampshire and is similar to northwardly draining parts of the Piscataquog and Souhegan River basins. During the retreat of the ice, the drainage divide between adjacent drainage basins acted as a dam and lakes formed behind it. As the ice continued to melt farther north, drainage outlets were uncovered at progressively lower altitudes along the drainage divide. This resulted in catastrophic draining of the lakes. Evidence for the existence of the lakes includes fine-grained lake-bottom deposits and deltas at successively lower elevations. Geomorphic evidence for the catastrophic draining includes Pulpit Rock in Bedford, N.H. and V-shaped notches eroded into till and bedrock. In Henniker, N.H., further evidence of catastrophic draining of a large lake in the Contoocook River Basin is a combination alluvial fan and delta that formed when rapidly draining lake water flowed across a till slope, eroded the till, and redeposited the material where it entered a smaller, much lower lake.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr95307","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Hildreth, C.T., and Moore, R.B., 1996, Late Wisconsinan deglaciation styles of parts of the Contoocook, Souhegan, and Piscataquog drainage basins, New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-307, iv, 63 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95307.","productDescription":"iv, 63 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157362,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0307/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52649,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0307/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8ad0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hildreth, C. Chlorinated volatile organic compounds, including 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and trichloroethylene, are widespread ground-water contaminants in two aquifers that are composed of unconsolidated sand and gravel. Distribution and fate of chlorinated organic compounds in the ground water has been affected by the movement and dissolution of solvents in their dense immiscible phase and by microbial degradation under anaerobic conditions. Detection of volatile organic contaminants in adjacent surface water indicates that shallow contaminated ground water discharges to surface water. Semivolatile organic compounds, especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are the most prevalent organic contaminants in soils. Various trace elements, such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and zinc, were found in elevated concentrations in ground water, surface water, and soil. Simulations with a ground-water-flow model and particle tracker postprocessor show that, without remedial pumpage, the contaminants will eventually migrate to Canal Creek and Gunpowder River. Simulations indicate that remedial pumpage of 2.0 million gallons per day from existing wells is needed to capture all particles originating in the contaminant plumes. Simulated pumpage from offsite wells screened in a lower confined aquifer does not affect the flow of contaminated ground water in the Canal Creek area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr95282","usgsCitation":"Lorah, M.M., and Clark, J.S., 1996, Contamination of ground water, surface water, and soil, and evaluation of selected ground-water pumping alternatives in the Canal Creek area of Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-282, xvi, 318 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95282.","productDescription":"xvi, 318 p.","numberOfPages":"334","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":52990,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0282/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":156353,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0282/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","otherGeospatial":"Aberdeen Proving Ground","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.317,\n              39.411\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.317,\n              39.383\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.267,\n              39.383\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.267,\n              39.411\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.317,\n              39.411\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696b5c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lorah, Michelle M. 0000-0002-9236-587X mmlorah@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9236-587X","contributorId":1437,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lorah","given":"Michelle","email":"mmlorah@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":190666,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clark, Jeffrey S.","contributorId":85222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clark","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190667,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The data were collected to support the efforts of the Tennessee Department of Transportation to better understand hydrologic properties at the site prior to wetland restoration. Water levels were monitored in thirteen 8-inch- diameter wells, approximately 2 feet deep. The casing in each well was slotted and screened from land surface to a depth of about 2 feet. Water-level recorders provided continuous records of stage during periods of wetland inundation, and depth to water table during periods of noninundation. A continuous-stage recorder was installed in a pond. Precipitation data were obtained from the Naval Air Station-Memphis, Millington, Tennessee. Land surface at the wells was inundated from 0 to 56 percent of the study period. At the minimum lake elevation of 4,137 feet, 89 percent of the lake is affected.
\n
Winds of 10 miles per hour or greater from the northwest can createa bottom shear stress great enough to resuspend bed sediment in Upper Klamath Lake. Winds of this speed occurred for more than 1 hour on 101 days out of 153 days from May to October 1991 at a weather station located at Agency Lake.
\n
At a wind speed of 10 miles per hour from the northwest, on Upper Klamath Lake, mean bottom shear stress is approximately four times greater for a lake elevation of 4,137 feet than for a lake elevation of 4,140 feet. Using relations developed between shear stress and resuspension rates for other lake studies as a guide, resuspension rates will be more than an order of magnitude greater for the lower lake elevation.
\n
In Upper Klamath Lake, resuspension of bottom sediment may be a major source of the internal phosphorus loading. It is estimated that the contributing phosphorous load sorbed on suspended sediment resuspended from a single wind episode occurring October 26-27, 1991 ranged from 330-1,800 tons with a median of 780 tons.
\n
Need for further study is indicated by our inability to predict (1) overall phosphorous- loading conditions, (2) the contribution of phosphorous load from the release of interstitial water in the lake bed sediment during resuspension, and (3) a more narrow range in calculation of phosphorous loading for single wind episodes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Portland, Oregon","doi":"10.3133/ofr95414","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Laenen, A., and LeTourneau, A., 1996, Upper Klamath basin nutrient-loading study: Estimate of wind-induced resuspension of bed sediment during periods of low lake elevation: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-414, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95414.","productDescription":"11 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":52912,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0414/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"404.04 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":154915,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0414/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Upper Klamath Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.94549560546875,\n              42.66325123326264\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.91116333007811,\n              42.62183364891663\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.90841674804686,\n              42.56825298997905\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.91940307617188,\n              42.51867517417283\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.915283203125,\n              42.48323834594139\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.871337890625,\n              42.46703196400574\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.82601928710938,\n              42.43866069732511\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.78482055664061,\n              42.40013627993724\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.78344726562499,\n              42.32403179535469\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.77520751953125,\n              42.28746890196626\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.75598144531251,\n              42.24173542549948\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.73675537109374,\n              42.18579390537848\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.77520751953125,\n              42.167475010395336\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.8438720703125,\n              42.18477632820454\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.89743041992189,\n              42.231567925608616\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.90017700195312,\n              42.264098158855845\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.96060180664062,\n              42.282389042899574\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.99630737304688,\n              42.348395259793\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.06222534179688,\n              42.386951440524875\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.11303710937499,\n              42.428524987525385\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.15835571289061,\n              42.510577098424115\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.14599609375001,\n              42.53891577257117\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.07183837890625,\n              42.603641609996586\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.03338623046874,\n              42.66729049697171\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.94549560546875,\n              42.66325123326264\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49a1e4b07f02db5be0af","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Laenen, Antonius","contributorId":107673,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laenen","given":"Antonius","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190467,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"LeTourneau, A.P.","contributorId":65500,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LeTourneau","given":"A.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190466,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Trace-element \r\nconcentrations historically have been greater than maximum \r\npermissible concentrations allowed by these standards. It is not \r\nknown if these concentrations are due to sources from the \r\nAlbuquerque metropolitan area or are from natural or other \r\nsources outside Albuquerque.\r\n\r\nAccurate water-quality data with lower reporting limits than \r\nhave been previously available were collected, and instantaneous \r\nconcentrations and loads were calculated for trace elements and \r\nother constituents in the Rio Grande during high-flow and low-\r\nflow conditions. Seven sampling sites were selected upstream \r\nfrom, in, and downstream from metropolitan Albuquerque. \r\nConcurrent streamflow measurements were made at the time of \r\nsampling to determine suspended-sediment loads. Samples were \r\nanalyzed separately for trace elements dissolved in water (less \r\nthan 0.4 micrometer in diameter) and for those contained in \r\nsuspended sediment (greater than 0.1 micrometer in diameter). \r\nSample collection and processing, analytical methods, and quality \r\ncontrol are discussed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr96126","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Kelly, T., and Taylor, H.E., 1996, Concentrations and loads of selected trace elements and other constituents in the Rio Grande in the vicinity of Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1994: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-126, v, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96126.","productDescription":"v, 45 p.","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":154887,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0126/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52829,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0126/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","county":"Bernalillo County","city":"Albuquerque ","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-106.242,35.2147],[-106.2387,35.0549],[-106.2386,35.0408],[-106.2373,34.9568],[-106.1453,34.9547],[-106.1446,34.872],[-106.3328,34.8712],[-106.3569,34.8702],[-106.409,34.8687],[-106.4097,34.8914],[-106.417,34.8945],[-106.4221,34.9013],[-106.6755,34.9065],[-106.6838,34.9006],[-106.6917,34.901],[-106.6922,34.896],[-106.7139,34.8772],[-106.7127,34.8713],[-107.0181,34.8727],[-107.0227,34.8817],[-107.0641,34.9618],[-107.104,35.0395],[-107.1068,35.0454],[-107.1769,35.1809],[-107.1972,35.2197],[-107.1628,35.2192],[-107.1623,35.2192],[-107.1578,35.2192],[-107.1262,35.2186],[-107.1105,35.2188],[-107.0936,35.2189],[-107.0801,35.2186],[-107.0761,35.2186],[-107.0345,35.2185],[-106.9416,35.217],[-106.9337,35.2171],[-106.8808,35.2171],[-106.8622,35.2172],[-106.5955,35.2184],[-106.5645,35.2186],[-106.4964,35.2184],[-106.479,35.2176],[-106.4531,35.2172],[-106.3822,35.2175],[-106.3765,35.2175],[-106.242,35.2147]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Bernalillo\",\"state\":\"NM\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a3772","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kelly, Todd","contributorId":89168,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kelly","given":"Todd","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190286,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Taylor, Howard E. hetaylor@usgs.gov","contributorId":1551,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"Howard","email":"hetaylor@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":190285,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
