Two-dimensional and transect two-term local quadrat variance techniques detected general trends in the spatial patterns of different-sized trees, detected multiple-scale patterns within individual size classes, and provided information on the scale and intensity of patches of individual size classes of trees in Muir and Castle Creek groves. In Muir Grove, midsized sequoias (1.5 to 2.4 m DBH classes) had major pattern scales 350–450 m in diameter, whereas the same-sized trees in Castle Creek Grove had pattern scales >1000 m in diameter. Many size classes of trees had minor patches superimposed on larger scale patterns in both groves. There may be different recruitment patterns in core (i.e., central) areas compared with peripheral areas of sequoia groves; core areas of both groves had more small live sequoias and dead sequoias than peripheral areas of the groves. Higher densities of sequoias and, perhaps, more rapid turnover of individuals in core areas may indicate (i) differences in disturbance histories and favorability of microsites in the core and peripheral areas of groves; (ii) different responses to disturbance due to shifts in the species composition of the stand and thus, the relative influences of intra- to inter-specific competition; or (iii) slower growth or lower survivorship rates in marginal habitat (i.e., peripheral areas).","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Canadian Journal of Forest Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"National Research Council","publisherLocation":"Ottawa","doi":"10.1139/x93-019","usgsCitation":"Stohlgren, T.J., 1993, Spatial patterns of giant sequoia (<i>Sequoiadendron giganteum</i>) in two sequoia groves in Sequoia National Park, California: Canadian Journal of Forest Research, v. 23, no. 2, p. 120-132, https://doi.org/10.1139/x93-019.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"120","endPage":"132","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295149,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":295148,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1139/x93-019"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Sequoia National Park","volume":"23","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5437a3d7e4b08a816ca63699","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stohlgren, Thomas J. 0000-0001-9696-4450 stohlgrent@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9696-4450","contributorId":2902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stohlgren","given":"Thomas","email":"stohlgrent@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":502991,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

To effectively monitor and predict these beach changes, accurate measurements of beach morphology incorporating both shore-parallel and shore-normal transects are required. Although it is possible to monitor beach dynamics using land-based surveying methods, it is generally not practical to collect data of sufficient density and resolution to satisfy a three-dimensional beach-change model of long segments of the coast. The challenge to coastal scientists is to devise new beach monitoring methods that address these needs and are rapid, reliable, relatively inexpensive, and maintain or improve measurement accuracy.</p>\n<p>The adaptation of Global Positioning System (GPS) surveying techniques to beach monitoring activities is a promising response to this challenge. An experiment that employed both GPS and conventional beach surveying was conducted, and a new beach monitoring method employing kinematic GPS surveys was devised. This new method involves the collection of precise shore-parallel and shore-normal GPS positions from a moving vehicle so that an accurate two-dimensional beach surface can be generated. Results show that the GPS measurements agree with conventional shore-normal surveys at the 1 cm level, and repeated GPS measurements employing the moving vehicle demonstrate a precision of better than 1 cm. In addition, the nearly continuous sampling and increased resolution provided by the GPS surveying technique reveals alongshore changes in beach morphology that are undetected by conventional shore-normal profiles. The application of GPS surveying techniques combined with the refinement of appropriate methods for data collection and analysis provides a better understanding of beach changes, sediment transport, and storm impacts.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Coastal Education & Research Foundation","publisherLocation":"Ft. The Loch was ice-covered from early November until early to mid May. The pattern of phytoplankton biovolume during ice-cover was consistent between the two years with maxima occurring in November/December and February/March. This pattern resulted principally from the contribution of <i>Asterionella formosa</i> Hass. Other dominant phytoplankton species in terms of biomass (<i>Dinobryon sertularia</i> Ehrenb., <i>Cryptomonas ovata</i> Ehrenb., and <i>Peridinium cinctum</i> (Müll.) Ehrenb.) collectively contributed from 10 to 90 % of the total cells. Algal composition changed throughout the winter and individual species varied in abundance with depth. The same dominant (and most of the rare) taxa were present both years. They varied in time of occurrence and abundance, but did not occur at the same time in both years. Phytoplankton species composition continually fluctuated throughout the winter. Because of the stability afforded by ice-cover, algal species succession was not driven by thermal regime or by wind induced changes in the mixed depth. Nor did grazing by the winter zooplankton assemblage, composed nearly exclusively of cyclopoid copepods and rotifers, adequately explain the phytoplankton dynamics. Freeze concentration of water (concentration as ions are excluded in the formation of ice) in early winter may be responsible for the early phytoplankton bloom.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Schweizerbart","doi":"10.1127/archiv-hydrobiol/129/1993/179","usgsCitation":"Spaulding, S., Ward, J.V., and Baron, J., 1993, Winter phytoplankton dynamics in a subalpine lake, Colorado, U.S.A: Archiv fuer Hydrobiologie, v. 129, no. 2, p. 179-198, https://doi.org/10.1127/archiv-hydrobiol/129/1993/179.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"179","endPage":"198","numberOfPages":"2","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":40553,"text":"WMA - Office of the Chief Operating Officer","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295275,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"The Loch, Rocky Mountain National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -105.66053867340088,\n              40.29026356570576\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.65397262573242,\n              40.29026356570576\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.65397262573242,\n              40.294551700286306\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.66053867340088,\n              40.294551700286306\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.66053867340088,\n              40.29026356570576\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"129","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"543e3b33e4b0fd76af69cf43","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spaulding, S. On seismic profiles, they may resemble submarine canyons, but are different in their size, morphology, origin, and hydrocarbon exploration potential. Two large Neogene submarine slides, located in the northwestern Gulf Coast Basin, formed on the upper slope and flanks of prominent shelf-margin deltas. The basal detachment surface of each slide is a structural discontinuity that may be misinterpreted as an erosional unconformity and, therefore, misidentified as a stratigraphic boundary separating depositional sequences. Regional stratigraphic correlations indicate that both slides were initiated after the continental platform wa flooded. The condensed sections deposited during the rise in relative sea level contain the basal detachment surfaces. Beyond these observations, the relationships between the slides and sea level fluctuations are uncertain. The shelf-margin embayments created by the slides apparently were partly excavated during periods of lowered relative sea level and were filled during the subsequent relative sea level rise and highstand. Eventually the preslide morphology of the shelf margin was restored by coalesced prograding deltas.</p><p>Submarine slides exhibit landward-dipping, wavy, mounded, and chaotic seismic reflections that are manifestations of slump blocks and other mass transport material. Composition of these internally derived slide deposits depends on the composition of the preexisting shelf margin. Embayment fill above the slide consists mostly of externally derived mudstones and sandstones deposited by various disorganized slope processes, as well as more organized submarine channel-levee systems. Thickest slope sandstones, which are potential hydrocarbon reservoirs, commonly occur above the basal slide mudstones where seismic reflections change from chaotic patterns to overlying wavy or subhorizontal reflections.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","publisherLocation":"Tulsa, OK","doi":"10.1306/BDFF8DE4-1718-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Morton, R., 1993, Attributes and origins of ancient submarine slides and filled embayments: Examples from the Gulf Coast basin: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 77, no. 6, p. 1064-1081, https://doi.org/10.1306/BDFF8DE4-1718-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"1064","endPage":"1081","numberOfPages":"18","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":296790,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Gulf Coast","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.49189203106948,\n              30.68549916573882\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.50009051841818,\n              30.68549916573882\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.50009051841818,\n              26.24293488988789\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.49189203106948,\n              26.24293488988789\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.49189203106948,\n              30.68549916573882\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"77","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54dd2b3de4b08de9379b32c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Morton, Robert","contributorId":85108,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morton","given":"Robert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":536960,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

At Cement, ferrimagnetic pyrrhotite (Fe</span><sub>7</sub><span>S</span><sub>8</sub><span>) formed with pyrite and marcasite in Permian red beds. The Fe-S minerals contain sulfur from two sources: (1) abiogenic sulfide, which has positive δ</span><sup>34</sup><span>S values, derived from thermochemical reduction of sulfate in deep reservoirs; and (2) biogenic sulfide, which has negative δ</span><sup>34</sup><span>S values, produced by reactions mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria fed by leaking hydrocarbons. At Simpson, ferrimagnetic greigite (Fe</span><sub>3</sub><span>S</span><sub>4</sub><span>) dominates magnetizations in nonmarine Upper Cretaceous clastic beds that contain epigenetic sulfide (δ</span><sup>34</sup><span>S &gt; +20 per mil) and seeping biodegraded oil. In this setting, the authigenic magnetic sulfide mineral apparently incorporated sulfide produced by bacterial sulfate reduction under limited sulfate conditions. An inferred hydrocarbon food source for the sulfate-reducing bacteria links the hydrocarbon seepage to the greigite. The greigite is perhaps forming today. In middle Tertiary sandstones of southeast Texas, pyrite and marcasite formed when abiogenic H</span><sub>2</sub><span>S (enriched in&nbsp;</span><sup>34</sup><span>S) migrated upward from deep reservoirs, or when H</span><sub>2</sub><span>S (depleted in&nbsp;</span><sup>34</sup><span>S) was produced at shallow depths by bacteria that used organic material dissolved in migrating water from depth. The pyrite and marcasite replaced detrital magnetic iron-titanium oxide minerals. The degree of such replacement appears to increase toward faults that connect deep petroleum reservoirs to shallow sandstone. Our results show that abiologic and biologic mechanisms can generate different magnetic sulfide minerals in some sulfidic zones of hydrocarbon seepage. More commonly the magnetizations in such zones would be diminished as a result of the replacement of detrital magnetic minerals by the common nonmagnetic sulfide minerals, or would remain unchanged if such detrital minerals were originally absent.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Applications of Paleomagnetism to Sedimentary Geology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"SEPM, Society for Sedimentary Geology","doi":"10.2110/pec.93.49.0167","usgsCitation":"Reynolds, R.L., Goldhaber, M.B., and Tuttle, M., 1993, Sulfidization and magnetization above hydrocarbon reservoirs, chap. 13 <i>of</i> Applications of Paleomagnetism to Sedimentary Geology, v. 19, p. 167-179, https://doi.org/10.2110/pec.93.49.0167.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"167","endPage":"179","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374117,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"","state":"","otherGeospatial":"","volume":"19","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reynolds, Richard L. 0000-0002-4572-2942 rreynolds@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4572-2942","contributorId":139068,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reynolds","given":"Richard","email":"rreynolds@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":787428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goldhaber, Martin B. 0000-0002-1785-4243 mgold@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1785-4243","contributorId":1339,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldhaber","given":"Martin","email":"mgold@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":787429,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tuttle, Michele L. mtuttle@usgs.gov","contributorId":1028,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tuttle","given":"Michele L.","email":"mtuttle@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":787430,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
