Plots were either undisturbed or scalped, and scalped plots were either inoculated with surrounding biological crust material or left to recover naturally. Natural recovery rates were found to be very slow. Inoculation significantly hastened recovery for the cyanobacterial/green algal component, lichen cover, lichen species richness, and moss cover. Even with inoculation, however, lichen and moss recovery was minimal. Traditional techniques of assessing recovery visually were found to underestimate time for total recovery. Other techniques, such as extraction of chlorophyll a from surface soil and measurement of sheath material accumulation, were used and are discussed.","language":"English","publisher":"M.L. This is partly due to the fact that investigators have assumed, rather than empirically tested, whether the reproductive strategies of the target populations were vulnerable to the planned treatment. Equally important, methods selected to include sterility usually involve a chemical agent that can affect sociosexual behaviors of the nuisance population. In this report, we illustrate how surgically induced sterility circumvents both problems--how the concept without the potentially confounding secondary effects of a chemical. We assessed the merits of initiating research to develop a male chemosterilant for Norway rats, red-winged blackbirds, beaver, and Canada geese by inducing sterility surgically. The infidelity of many red-winged females to their polygynous territorial male was surprising and argued against searching for a male sterilant. On the other hand, beaver and Canada goose studies confirmed previous reports that both form par-bonds and are monogamous. Both should be vulnerable to a male chemosterilant approach, and research toward this goal is justified.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"USDA National Wildlife Research Center Symposia: Contraception in wildlife management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":1,"text":"Federal Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Department of Agriculture","usgsCitation":"Kennelly, J.J., and Converse, K.A., 1993, Surgical sterilization: an underutilized procedure for evaluating the merits of induced sterility: Paper 13, 8 p.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"21","endPage":"28","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":287943,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287942,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/nwrccontraception/13/"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae7851e4b0abf75cf2d0f6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kennelly, James J.","contributorId":33962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennelly","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355037,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Converse, Kathryn A. kathy_converse@usgs.gov","contributorId":16802,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Converse","given":"Kathryn","email":"kathy_converse@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":355036,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We developed models for 78 and 100 wolves. For each wolf population, we ran scenarios using wolf predation rates of 9, 12, and 15 ungulates/wolf/year.  With 78 wolves and the antlerless elk harvest reduced 27%, our modeled elk population estimated were 5-18% smaller than the model estimate without wolves.  With 100 wolves and the antlerless elk harvest reduced 27%, our elk population estimated were 11-30% smaller than the population estimates without wolves.  Wolf predation effects were greater on the modeled mule deer population than on elk.  With 78 wolves and no antlerless deer harvest, we predicted the mule deer population could be 13-44% larger than without wolves.  With 100 wolves and no antlerless deer harvest, the mule deer population was 0-36% larger than without wolves.  After wolf recovery, our POP-II models suggested moose harvests would have to be reduced at least 50% to maintain moose numbers at the levels predicted when wolves were not present.  Mule deer and moose population data are limited, and these wolf predation effects may be overestimated if population sizes or male-female ratios were underestimated in our population models.  We recommend additional mule deer and moose population data be obtained.","largerWorkTitle":"Ecological issues on reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone National Park","language":"English","publisher":"National Park Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Mack, J., and Singer, F.J., 1993, Using Pop-II models to predict effects of wolf predation and hunter harvests on elk, mule deer, and moose on the northern range, 26 p.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"49","endPage":"74","numberOfPages":"26","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295110,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Montana, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Yellowstone National Park","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5437a3dfe4b08a816ca636ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mack, John A.","contributorId":102818,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mack","given":"John A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":502952,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Singer, Francis J.","contributorId":67026,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Singer","given":"Francis","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":502951,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The iceberg tongue rotated to an east-west orientation and drifted westward. Between 1986 and 1992, a total of 140 km of drift has occurred. A systematic-clustered sampling design (<i>n</i>=381 plots) was used to compare forest stand characteristics in two primary roost areas (Caldwell Butte and Eagle Nest Butte) and two potential roost areas (Hidden Valley and Island Butte).  A 100 percent inventory of roost trees in Caldwell Butte (<i>n</i>=103 trees) and Eagle Nest Butte (<i>n</i>=44 trees) showed they were spatially clumped and restricted to 12.7 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively, of the study areas.  Roost trees, primarily ponderosa pine (<i>Pinus ponderosa</i>), averaged 81.1 ± 1.3 cm dbh (mean ± 1 S.E.) compared to non-roost trees (>35 cm dbh) that averaged 52.2 ± 1.0 cm dbh.  Roost trees were generally taller and more open-structured than non-roost trees.  All four study sites had adequate numbers of mid-sized trees (10 to 50 cm dbh) to replace the current stock of older, larger roost trees.  However, seedling and small trees (<10 cm dbh) in the roost areas were spatially clumped and few, suggesting that maintaining a continuous population of roost trees may be a problem in the distant future.  Long-term studies of changing winter roost habitat and eagle use are essential to protect the bald eagle in the northwestern US.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Northwest Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Northwest Scientific Association","publisherLocation":"Cheney, WA","usgsCitation":"Stohlgren, T.J., 1993, Bald eagle winter roost characteristics in Lava Beds National Monument, California: Northwest Science, v. 67, no. 1, p. 44-54.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"44","endPage":"54","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295355,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Lava Beds National Monument","volume":"67","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5440de1be4b0b0a643c732b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stohlgren, Thomas J. 0000-0001-9696-4450 stohlgrent@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9696-4450","contributorId":2902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stohlgren","given":"Thomas","email":"stohlgrent@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":503275,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Laysan Albatross chicks with large volumes of proventricular plastic had asymptotic fledging weights significantly lower (122 g) than did chicks with low amounts of plastic.  The effect of depresses fledging weights on postfledging survival was not determined.  Plastic had no detectable effect on the growth of Black-footed Albatross chicks. The apparatus uses two prepositioned areal electrofishing devices (PAED) of different designs, a bottom parallel electrode PAED and a suspended dropper electrode PAED. To determine the effective immobilization ranges of the PAEDs, we evaluated intensities and shapes of the PAEDs' electrical fields, and the electroshock responses of fish in cages in concrete tanks and in four streams in Alabama with different water conductivities. Electroshock responses indicated that complete immobilization occurred at voltage gradients of 1.0 V/cm or higher (voltage drop, 400 V AC), as far as 35 cm from the PAED electrodes, although some fish were immobilized up to 65 cm away at 0.3 V/cm. We estimated the immobilization (stun) power density threshold to be about 10 μW/cm3. Stream evaluations of the PAEDs revealed that higher voltages were needed to immobilize fish at lower (35 μS/cm) and higher (120 and 125 μS/cm) water conductivities, whereas lower voltages were required at an intermediate conductivity (60 μS/cm). These results conformed with the predictions of power transfer theory and underscored the need to calibrate PAEDs to stream conductivities to standardize the effective sampling range.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"North American Journal of Fisheries Management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","publisherLocation":"Lawrence, KS","doi":"10.1577/1548-8675(1993)013<0807:APAEAF>2.3.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Fisher, W.L., and Brown, M.E., 1993, A prepositioned areal electrofishing apparatus for sampling stream habitats: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 13, no. 4, p. 807-816, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8675(1993)013<0807:APAEAF>2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"807","endPage":"816","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295622,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":295621,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8675(1993)013<0807:APAEAF>2.3.CO;2"}],"volume":"13","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"544a18aae4b04d2014abfb01","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fisher, William L. wfisher@usgs.gov","contributorId":1229,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fisher","given":"William","email":"wfisher@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":503742,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brown, Marshall E.","contributorId":67818,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Marshall","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503743,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
