The Reservation spans several major structural elements in the western part of the Wind River Basin, but the feature of primary importance to evaluations of future petroleum resource potential is the western end of the deep basin syncline, which occupies the east-central and southeastern parts of the Reservation where many thousands of feet of synorogenic deposits accumulated.

The Cody Shale is characterized by 3,300-4,000 ft of marine shale and sandstone, the latter rock type predominating in the upper part of the formation and grading upward into the basal, regressive sandstone units of the Mesaverde Formation. The Mesaverde, Meeteetse, Lance, and Fort Union Formations are primarily of fluvial origin, and consist mostly of interbedded sandstone and shale with various amounts of carbonaceous shale and thin coal beds. Maximum thicknesses of these formations are 2,150 ft, 1,370 ft, 2,900 ft, and 6,200 ft, respectively. Some parts of the full sequence may be partially or totally cut out beneath erosional unconformities at the base of either the Lance or Fort Union Formations, or at the base of the lower Eocene rocks, near the basin margins.

All of the uppermost Cretaceous and Paleocene rocks have yielded commercial quantities of hydrocarbons (chiefly natural gas), primarily from closed anticlines such as the Pavillion and Muddy Ridge fields, but in part from apparent stratigraphic traps formed by the updip pinchouts of lenticular sandstones along the west and southwest margins of the basin syncline as well as within the basin proper. Drilling is sparse in these areas, and the potential for stratigraphic entrapment has yet to be explored in extensive parts of the Reservation.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wyoming Geological Association special symposium on oil and gas and other resources of the Wind River basin, Wyoming","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Keefer, W.R., and Johnson, R.C., 1993, Stratigraphy and oil and gas resources in uppermost Cretaceous and Paleocene rocks, Wind River Reservation, Wyoming, in Wyoming Geological Association special symposium on oil and gas and other resources of the Wind River basin, Wyoming, p. 71-85.","productDescription":"15 p. About 20,000 nests are required to produce the number of young in the autumn flight using estimates of clutch size, hatching success and gosling survival based on colonies on the Y-K Delta. More than 80% of the nests in the population can be accounted for currently on the Y-K Delta. Most moulting individuals that did not breed, or were unsuccessful, are unaccounted for in late summer. Numbers of Black Brant nesting in major colonies on the Y-K Delta declined >60% in the early 1980s, most likely as a result of local subsistence harvest combined with predation by arctic foxes. On an earthquake-generating fault, this distance plays a key role in determining the rupture nucleation dimension6, the amount of premonitory and post-seismic slip7-10, and the maximum seismic ground acceleration1,11. In laboratory friction experiments, Dc has been related to the size of surface contact junctions2,5,12; thus, the discrepancy between laboratory measurements of Dc (??? 10-5 m) and values obtained from modelling earthquakes (??? 10-2 m) has been attributed to differences in roughness between laboratory surfaces and natural faults5. This interpretation predicts a dependence of Dc on the particle size of fault gouge 2 (breccia and wear material) but not on shear strain. Here we present experimental results showing that Dc scales with shear strain in simulated fault gouge. Our data suggest a new physical interpretation for the critical slip distance, in which Dc is controlled by the thickness of the zone of localized shear strain. As gouge zones of mature faults are commonly 102-103 m thick13-17, whereas laboratory gouge layers are 1-10 mm thick, our data offer an alternative interpretation of the discrepancy between laboratory and field-based estimates of Dc.","language":"English","publisher":"Nature Publishing Group","doi":"10.1038/362618a0","issn":"00280836","usgsCitation":"Marone, C., and Kilgore, B.D., 1993, Scaling of the critical slip distance for seismic faulting with shear strain in fault zones: Nature, v. 362, no. 6421, p. 618-621, https://doi.org/10.1038/362618a0.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"618","endPage":"621","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":227592,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"362","issue":"6421","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b8718e4b08c986b3162f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marone, Chris","contributorId":7426,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Marone","given":"Chris","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":378906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kilgore, Brian D. 0000-0003-0530-7979 bkilgore@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0530-7979","contributorId":3887,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kilgore","given":"Brian","email":"bkilgore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":234,"text":"Earthquake Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":378907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Radiocarbon dates show that deglaciation was underway by 12 ka, and that slopes and alluvial fans at the bases of slopes were essentially stabilized by at least 8 ka. The soils consist of fine-grained loessial A horizons overlying Bw horizons in gravelly till or alluvial-fan gravel. Following deglaciation, widespread gullying took place in till on the steep (maximum angle: 37°) sideslopes of most valleys; the eroded material was deposited as fans at the bases of the slopes. Loess was then deposited as a fairly uniform blanket across most elements of the landscape. Soil formation began during or following loess deposition, and because soil-profile morphology is sufficiently similar at most sites, soil formation has been a dominant process during much of the Holocene. This remarkable stability, especially for such steep slopes, is attributed to a combination of tight packing of the till, permeability of the capping loess, rapid revegetation following ice retreat, and roots from the present grassland vegetation and possibly former forests.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0341-8162(93)90025-K","usgsCitation":"Miller, D.C., Birkeland, P.W., and Rodbell, D.T., 1993, Evidence for Holocene stability of steep slopes, northern Peruvian Andes, based on soils and radiocarbon dates: Catena, v. 20, no. 1-2, p. 1-12, https://doi.org/10.1016/0341-8162(93)90025-K.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"12","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":227457,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Peru","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -77.666,\n -7.5\n ],\n [\n -77.666,\n -8\n ],\n [\n -77.25,\n -8\n ],\n [\n -77.25,\n -7.5\n ],\n [\n -77.666,\n -7.5\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"20","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0d29e4b0c8380cd52e4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, D. The corresponding gradient in the intensity of the chemical weathering environment provides an opportunity to address the effects of varying chemical weathering intensity on the composition of clay-size weathering products in soils developed on basalt. In addition, little-modified remnants of the constructional surface of the Koolau Volcano, isolated by stream dissection, remain as facets on the southern ends of the parallel ridges of the study area. By comparing clay mineralogy of soils developed on these older geomorphic surfaces with those developed on the younger sharp-crested ridges and steep side slopes, the effects of weathering duration on clay mineralogy can also be addressed.

Soil clays in this part of the Koolau Mountains are mineralogically complex; principal phases include smectite, kaolinite, and halloysite, but pure end member phases are uncommon. Rather, most phases contain some amount of mixed layering. Smectite may contain small (<5%) amounts of randomly interstratified halloysite. Similarly, kaolinite commonly contains a small proportion of halloysite interlayers. A complex halloysitic phase shows evidence of interstratification with both smectite and kaolinite. Nonphyllosilicates found in the clay fraction include gibbsite, goethite, rare quartz, and perhaps cristobalite.

The gradient in precipitation is reflected in soil clay mineralogy by varying proportions of dominantly smectitic, kaolinitic, and halloysitic phases. In regions of relatively low precipitation (<2,000 mm/yr), soils are dominated by the smectitic and halloysitic phases. With increased precipitation (as much as ∼4,000 mm/yr), kaolinitic and halloysitic phases become the dominant clay minerals, and goethite and gibbsite become increasingly abundant.

Older soils developed on geomorphic surfaces representing the original constructional surface of Koolau Volcano are markedly more leached than those from younger landscapes in the same precipitation regime. Although smectite may be present, kaolinite is the dominant phase, and accumulations of Fe and Ti occur in the uppermost soil levels. Enrichment of Zr and Ti in these soils, as compared to concentrations in the original basaltic parent material, indicates that as much as 75% of the parent material has been lost. Thus weathering duration may affect soil clay composition in the same way as weathering intensity.

Because smectite and halloysite are expandable clay minerals, their presence in soils may decrease slope stability and influence the nature of slope processes. Soil avalanches occur on steep slopes throughout the study area, whereas slow-moving landslides appear to be restricted to gentler slopes in drier parts of the study area where smectite is abundant. The clay mineralogy of soils thus appears to influence the nature of slope processes in the southeastern Koolau Mountains.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/SPE284-p147","usgsCitation":"Johnsson, M.J., Ellen, S.D., and McKittrick, M.A., 1993, Intensity and duration of chemical weathering: An example from soil clays of the southeastern Koolau Mountains, Oahu, Hawaii: Special Paper of the Geological Society of America, v. 284, p. 147-170, https://doi.org/10.1130/SPE284-p147.","productDescription":"24 p. Sample volumes ranging from 10 to 120 L were processed with the GLSE, and the results from the large-sample analyses were compared to those derived from 1-L continuous liquid-liquid extractions Few of the 40 target pesticides were detected in 1-L samples, whereas large-sample preconcentration in the GLSE provided detectable levels for many of the target pesticides. The number of pesticides detected in GLSE processed samples was usually directly proportional to sample volume, although the measured concentrations of the pesticides were generally lower at the larger sample volumes for the same water source. The GLSE can be used to provide lower detection levels relative to conventional liquid-liquid extraction in GC/MS analysis of pesticides in samples of surface water.
","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/es00046a021","usgsCitation":"Foster, G.D., Gates, P.M., Foreman, W., McKenzie, S.W., and Rinella, F., 1993, Determination of dissolved-phase pesticides in surface water from the Yakima River basin, Washington, using the Goulden large-sample extractor and gas chromatography/mass spectrometer: Environmental Science & Technology, v. 27, no. 9, p. 1911-1917, https://doi.org/10.1021/es00046a021.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1911","endPage":"1917","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321876,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Yakima River basin","volume":"27","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"574eb5c0e4b0ee97d51a83ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foster, Gregory D.","contributorId":18020,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foster","given":"Gregory","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630876,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gates, Paul M.","contributorId":31411,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gates","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630877,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Foreman, William T. wforeman@usgs.gov","contributorId":1473,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foreman","given":"William T.","email":"wforeman@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":630878,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"McKenzie, Stuart W.","contributorId":27841,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McKenzie","given":"Stuart","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630879,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Rinella, Frank A.","contributorId":89515,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rinella","given":"Frank A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630880,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}
