The flowmeters measure flow in pipes; this flow is related to water use. Because actual water use can differ from the total flow in the pipe, water use is not, in itself, measured by the flowmeters.</p>\n<p>The transit-time flowmeter successfully measured flow on 81 of 88 measurement attempts. The time-of-flight flowmeter successfully measured flow on 85 of 93 measurement attempts. One reflective-doppler flowmeter successfully measured flow on 71 of 75 measurement attempts. Another type of reflective-doppler flowmeter, which required air bubbles or paniculate matter in the flow, successfully measured flow on 19 of 92 measurement attempts. Flows at most water-withdrawal sites selected for this study did not include paniculate matter.</p>\n<p>At 10 site visits where inline flowmeter measurements were available for comparison and where three of the four selected portable flowmeters were successful, the transit-time flowmeter measurements had a mean log-percent difference from the inline measurements of 2.8 and a standard deviation of 3.7. The time-of-flight flowmeter measurements had a mean log-percent difference of 7.5 and a standard deviation of 7.6. The reflective-doppler flowmeter measurements had a mean log-percent difference of -14 and a standard deviation of 18.</p>\n<p>The feasibility of using time totalizers for determining water use was investigated by observing seven vibration time totalizers (VTT's) mounted at five sites. None of the units exhibited adverse effects from the heat, precipitation, or humidity associated with Indiana summers. One VTT was mounted at a public water-supply site where inductive time-totalizer measurements were available for comparison. The VTT agreed within 8 hours of the inductive time totalizer after 2,340 hours of pump operation. There were no mechanical prpblems&nbsp;with the VTT units used in this study.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Most of the data collected are from 36 monitoring wells drilled in June and July 1990 and March and May 1991 using a hollow-stem auger. These wells range from 15.0 to 129.5 feet deep and are completed in the shallow unconfined aquifer, an underlying confining layer, or both. Data from public supply wells and other existing wells completed in aquifers below the confining layers near these monitoring wells are presented in order to compare data from those wells with data from the shallow unconfined aquifer and the underlying confining layers.</p><p>Field data collected from selected wells and drill holes include well-completion information, lithologic logs, and water-level and field water-quality measurements. Water samples collected from monitoring wells drilled in 1990 and 1991 and from selected existing wells were analyzed for inorganic constituents, trace metals in unfiltered water, volatile organic compounds, organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and radionuclides. Core samples were collected from selected monitoring wells drilled in 1990 and 1991 and analyzed for geochemical and geotechnical properties. Cation exchange capacity, carbon concentration, and the concentration of selected elements in core material are presented. Particle size, dry density, moisture content, porosity, hydraulic conductivity, initial void ratio, specific storage, and other properties determined for material in cores from selected monitoring The region is being studied because of environmental problems caused by the introduction of wastes for a long time, because a new ocean outfall (to begin operation in 1995) will change the location for disposal of treated Boston sewage from Boston Harbor into Massachusetts Bay, and because of the need to understand the transport of sediments and associated contaminants in order to address a wide range of management questions. The USGS effort complements and is closely coordinated with the research and monitoring studies supported by the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, the Massachusetts Bays Program, and by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. The USGS study includes (1) geologic mapping, (2) circulation studies, (3) long-term current and sediment transport observations, (4) measurements of contaminant inventories and rates of sediment mixing and accumulation, (5) circulation modeling, (6) development of a contaminated sediments data base, and (7) information exchange.
