Those in the Barrow area, which are believed to be representative of most of the lakes in the coastal plain, are generally either two to three feet or six to nine feet deep. The shallow lakes can often provide a suitable summer water supply, but only the deeper lakes provide a significant water supply throughout the year.</p><p>The water in the individual lakes is in an essentially isothermal state during the ice-free period that lasts from late June until September. The maximum temperature recorded in a lake near Barrow in 1954 was about 12°C. When ice formation begins, the temperature of the body of water as a whole may be only a few tenths of a degree above 0°C. Once the lake surface is iced over, the water temperatures may rise rapidly as much as 2°C, apparently owing to radiated heat received through the ice. The heating is terminated by a sudden cooling that coincides with the covering of the ice by a thin blanket of snow. This cooling is followed in turn by a second warming of the bottom and near-bottom water that takes place gradually over a period of weeks. The bottom sediments beneath the lake are the source of heat. The magnitude of the second rise and the time during which it takes place depend on the distance from shore and the depth of water. A gradual cooling takes place during the balance of the winter. Preliminary life-history stages include procercoid development in copepods of the genus <i>Cyclops</i> followed by plerocercoid development in the musculature of a variety of coregonid and salmonid fishes. The unsightly appearance of even moderate plerocercoid infections is often sufficient to render fish unacceptable for human consumption. Chemical and histological studies of wild and domestic fish","docAbstract":"<div id=\"sp0005\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">Salmonids reared under artificial conditions show marked consistent differences in body composition in comparison with wild salmonids. Protein and mineral levels are lower and lipid values are higher in hatchery fish than in wild fish. As the period of artificial rearing is increased, these differences become more extreme. In hatchery fish, there is generally more microscopically visible fat in the liver and viscera than in these organs in wild fish although extremes are seen in both groups. In young hatchery fish and in wild fish, there is no correlation between fat deposition in the liver and in the pancreas, but in older hatchery fish, both of these organs are fatty and there is a simultaneous increase in total body lipid. In wild fish, ceroid deposition is greater, suggesting that the fatty acids are more highly unsaturated. There is little difference in disease incidence between the two groups, but parasitism is more pronounced in wild fish.</div><div id=\"sp0010\" class=\"u-margin-s-bottom\">The significant variables between wild and artificially produced fish appear to be limited to diet and environment. The U. S. Geological Survey was asked to assist in evaluating the available information on the geology, the ground-water possibilities at the village, and the results of drilling a deep test well, as part of the program of determining the ground-water resources of Alaska.</p><p>There has been little ground-water development in the part of Alaska that includes the Bethel area, and very little was previously known of ground-water conditions there. Cederstrom (Cederstrom, D. J., 1952, Summary of Ground-Water Development in Alaska, 1950: U. S. Geol. Survey Circ. 169, p. 29-3C) summarized the information available for the village of Bethel as of 1950. At that time the villagers were using the Kuskokwim River for their water supply, and that use has continued to the present.</p><p>This report describes the subsurface materials and ground-water conditions at Bethel (fig. 1) and in the immediate vicinity as interpreted in the light of recent drilling of an Alaska Department of Health test well (no. 14 in this, report). The area surrounding the village was included in the investigation because of the information available on existing wells and tent holes drilled in that area. The files of the Ground Water Branch of the Geological Survey at Anchorage contained records of a few of the wells and test holes drilled prior to the time of this investigation (see fig. 2 for well and test-hole locations). Additional water samples were obtained and analyzed at the laboratory of the Geological Survey at Palmer, Alaska, to supplement the analyses already on file. Supplementary well information was kindly furnished by the following: Project Engineer at the U. S.
