The Katalla area herein defined lies in the Cordova A-1, A-2, B-1, and B-2 quadrangles (fig. 1), and encompasses most of the area considered as the Katalla district by previous investigators. This report describes the engineering geolocy of the Katalla segment of a proposed highway from Mile 39 on the Copper River Highway to Icy Bay, approximately 110 miles east of the town of Katalla. The completion of this highway and the Copper River Highway from Mile 39 to Chitin&amp; will tie the Katalla and Cordova areas into the Alaska Highway net and the Alaska Railroad.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr5666","usgsCitation":"Kachadoorian, R., 1956, Engineering geology of the Katalla area, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 56-66, Report: 22 p.; 5 Plates: 29.66 x 33.95 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5666.","productDescription":"Report: 22 p.; 5 Plates: 29.66 x 33.95 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424093,"rank":7,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424082,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424081,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148825,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":424084,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424083,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":424080,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0066/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Katalla area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -144.51203368115867,\n              60.21428885178199\n            ],\n            [\n              -144.51203368115867,\n              60.16363018728188\n            ],\n            [\n              -144.35815786774205,\n              60.16363018728188\n            ],\n            [\n              -144.35815786774205,\n              60.21428885178199\n            ],\n            [\n              -144.51203368115867,\n              60.21428885178199\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602759","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kachadoorian, Reuben","contributorId":24336,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kachadoorian","given":"Reuben","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169377,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The fissure-fault intersections, which are considered to be favorable ore-locallizing structures, are concealed by lavas and tuffs several hundred feet thick that are strongly bleached and altered and which contain positive geochemical anomalies.</p><p>During the summer months of 1954 and 1955 for the U. S. Geological Survey, under contract, 9 exploration holes were drilled in the Trixie area: 1) to investigate the relations of surface geochemical anomalies to possible concealed ore, 2) to determine the structure and stratigraphic units in the sedimentary rocks concealed beneath the lava, and 3) to further develop and refine geologic and geochemical techniques that may be useful in prospecting for concealed ore deposits in the East Tintic and other mining districts.</p><p>This report briefly discusses the geology, hydrothermal alteration, and geochemical and geophysical anomalies in the Trixie area and presents the logs of the drill holes and tables of the copper, lead, zinc, and silver content, expressed in parts per million, of the drill cuttings and drill The pre-Tertiary rocks consist of a few swell pendants of metamorphic rocks in Atolia quartz monzonite. Overlying these are small patches of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, probably Tertiary, which project into the later formations. The major sedimentary unit is the middle Pliocene 3edrock Spring formation; it consists chiefly of arkosic sandstone and conglomerate with lesser amounts of siltstone and brecciated volcanic rocks. Overlying this formation are two late Pliocene formations, the Almond Mountain volcanic ant Klinker Mountain volcanics in the eastern and western parts of the area, respectively. Small areas of other late Pliocene(?) volcanic rocks are locally present. Overlying these are flaws of the Lava Mountains andesite of very late Pliocene age. The Pleistocene(?) Christmas Canyon formation is restricted to the eastern half of the area. A few small dikes of basalt cut this formation. Quaternary gravels, alluvium, and travertine are the youngest deposits.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr56109","usgsCitation":"Smith, G.I., 1956, They rank among the most destructive in the country's his ory. Augmented by the antecedent hurricane sto m of August 11-15, the rainfall of August 17-20 accompanying hurricane Diane reached maximum val es of 17 to 19 inches in south-central Massachusett • Record-breaking floods resulted within a broad re ion extending from southeastern Pennsylvania to east rn Massachusetts. The floods were outstanding in four categories: The large geogra hie area covered by floods of such magnitude; the ex ensive damage and loss .of life ranking with the grea est recorded in this country; the degree to which prio records were exceeded; and the distribution which as such that the greatest floods occurred predominate! on the smaller streams. Property damage has been stimated to be about half a billion dollars and was most~y concentrated in the heavily industrialized valleys f New England. A death toll of 179 persons was attr\"buted to the floods. Peak discharges exceeded previ usly established maxima by 2. 2 and 2. 3 times respec ively, on Blackstone River at Woonsocket, R. I. , and Q inebaug River at Putnam, Conn.; 4. 1 times on Nau atuck River near Thomaston, Conn. ; and 4. 5 times on 1 ush Kill at Shoemakers, Pa. A unit runoff of 2, 300 c 1 hie feet per second per square mile occurred from ~· 50 square miles on Powdermill Brook near Westfiel , Mass. Although the floods were generally greate t on the smaller streams, Connecticut River at Hart ord reached the third highest stage since settlement an Delaware River between Port Jervis and Trenton exce ded the previous historic flood of 1903. This adv ce report has been prepared to supply preliminary · formation needed for immediate planning. It has been r leased pending preparation of a more comprehensive r port covering a three-month period of floods within an area from Massachusetts to North Carolina. In luded herein, for the region from Massachuset s to Pennsylvania, are general descriptions of the fEods, peak discharges for the present and previous rec rd floods at gaging stations, peak discharges at m y miscellaneous sites in the areas of greatest floo ing, and detailed stage and discharge data at 51 selecte gaging stations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir377","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1956, Floods of August 1955 in the Northeastern States: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 377, iii, 76 p. :maps (1 fold.) diagrs., tables. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir377.","productDescription":"iii, 76 p. :maps (1 fold.) diagrs., tables. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30966,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0377/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":30967,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0377/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118300,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0377/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dae4b07f02db5dff7d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Three geologic terranes are present in the report area: the Tertiary-Quaternary tuff ace o us terrane, the Upper Cretaceous shale terrane, and the upper Permian through Lower Cretaceous sandstone terrane. The average uranium content of 179 water samples from the tuffaceous terrane, which is composed primarily of tuffaceous, fluviatile rocks ranging in age from Pliocene to Pleistocene, is 6.7 parts per billion. A total of 48 samples from the Upper Cretaceous shale terrane, which is composed almost entirely\nof shale and limestone of marine origin, contain an average of 20.4 parts per billion uranium , Sandstone, silt stone, and clay stone of terrestrial and near-shore marine origin are the predominant constituents of the upper Permian through Lower Cretaceous sandstone terrane, and the 83 water samples collected from, or related to, rock units of this terrane contain an average of 10.2 parts per billion uranium. The average uranium content figure derived for the tipper Cretaceous shale terrane may not be representative of the uranium content of waters from this terrane throughout the report area because more than half of the samples assigned to the terrane were collected in an area in which most water samples contain relatively large amounts of uranium. Compared to the shale terrane, the tuffaceous terrane and the sandstone terrane are both represented by a greater number of samples collected over a much larger area and the average uranium content figures derived for them are believed to be representative of the uranium content of waters from, or related to, rock units of the two terranes in the report area. The average uranium content figures derived for different rock units, or groups of rock units, subdivided by the source type from which the samples were collected (well, spring, stream, municipal water system, reservoir, or lake), and in some cases by geographic parts of the report area, are believed to be of more potential use in any future hydrogeochemical exploration in the area than are the average uranium content figures derived for the three geologic terranes. The average uranium content of ground-water samples from 12 individual rock units or groups of rock units ranges from less than 1. 0 to 38 parts per billion. Several rock units were sampled over large enough areas to indicate that waters from the same rock unit in different parts of the report area may range widely in average uranium content. Water samples from some of the rock units in the area, particularly those of Triassic and Permian age, contain large amounts of uranium,\nand in some parts of the report area, such as the Cimarron River area of westernmost Oklahoma and northeastern New Mexico, and the Rule Creek area in Bent and Las Animas Counties, Colo. , most, or all, of the water samples collected contain relatively large amounts of uranium. Further exploration to determine the source of the uranium in the water from these rock units and areas may be worthwhile.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei624","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Landis, E., 1956, Uranium content of ground and surface waters in western Kansas, eastern Colorado, and the Oklahoma Panhande: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 624, Report: 73 p.; Plate 1: 33.36 inches x 23.81 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei624.","productDescription":"Report: 73 p.; Plate 1: 33.36 inches x 23.81 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278037,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/624/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":279537,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/624/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":279536,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/624/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado;Kansas;New Mexico;Oklahoma","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -104.62,36.13 ], [ -104.62,40.11 ], [ -99.47,40.11 ], [ -99.47,36.13 ], [ -104.62,36.13 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5242b466e4b096ee62464206","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Landis, E.R.","contributorId":40605,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Landis","given":"E.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484476,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

More than $4.5 million worth of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and uranium was produced from the mines in the area between 1859 and 1954. This investigation was made by the Geological survey on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.<p>\n<br/>\n<p>The bedrock in the area is Precambrian and consists of igneous rocks, some of which have been metamorphosed , and metasedimentary rocks. The metasedimentary rocks include biotite-quartz-plagioclase gneiss that is locally garnetiferous, sillimanitic biotite-quartz gneiss, amphibolite, and lime-silicate gneiss. Rocks that may be metasedimentary or meta-igneous are quartz monzonite gneiss and granite gneiss and pegmatite. The granite gneiss and pegmatite locally form a migmatite with the biotitic metasedimentary rocks. These older rocks have been intruded by granodiorite, quartz, and granite pegmatite. During Tertiary time the Precambrian rocks were invaded by dikes and plugs of quartz monzonite porphyry, alaskite porphyry, granite porphyry, monzonite porphyry, bostonite and garnetiferous bostonite porphyry, quartz bostonite porphyry, trachytic granite porphyry, and biotite-quartz latite-porphyry.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Solifluction debris of Wisconsin age forms sheets filling some of the high basins, covering some of the steep slopes, and filling parts of some of the valleys; talus and talus slides of Wisconsin age rest of or are mixed with solifluction debris in some of the high basins. Recent and/or Pleistocene alluvium is present along valley flats of the larger streams and gulches.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Two periods of Precambrian folding can be recognized in the area. The older folding crumpled the metasedimentary rocks into a series of upright and overturned north-northeast plunging anticlines and synclines. Quartz monzonite gneiss, granite gneiss and pegmatite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite and associated hornblendite are metamorphosed during this period. The second period of folding appears to have been the reflection at depth of faulting nearer the surface; it resulted in crushing as well as some folding of the already folded rocks into terrace and monoclinal folds that plunge gently east-northeast. The biotite-muscovite granite, which is the youngest major Precambrian rock unit, is both concordant (phacolithic) and crosscutting along the older fold system and has been fractured by the younger fold system.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei432","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Harrison, J.E., and Wells, J.D., 1956, Geology and ore deposits of the Chicago Creek area, Clear Creek County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 432, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tei432.","productDescription":"6 p.","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":285841,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0432/report.pdf"},{"id":284139,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/tei432.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","county":"Clear Creek County","otherGeospatial":"Chicago Creek","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105.927057,39.564453 ], [ -105.927057,39.852061 ], [ -105.394554,39.852061 ], [ -105.394554,39.564453 ], [ -105.927057,39.564453 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5355946ee4b0120853e8bfd1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harrison, J. S. Geological Survey made a detailed investigation during the period February 1945 to March 1947 of the ground-water resources of a 3-square-mile area along the Ohio River north-east of Louisville. Test drilling shows that the principal aquifer consists of about 80 feet of glacial-outwash sands and gravels lying in an old river channel which was cut into rocks of Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian age.</p><p>The total ground-water storage in the area is estimated as 7 billion gallons. The ground-water levels are affected by changes in river elevation, by rainfall, and by the effects of pumping in the downtown part of Louisville 3 miles to the southwest. In the northeastern part of the area the flow of ground water, as defined by contour maps, is toward the river, and in the southwestern part of the area it is from the river toward the downtown area of overpumping.</p><p>Ground water in the area has an average temperature of 56° F. The water, which is moderately hard, is suitable for domestic and industrial uses.</p><p>Analysis of a pumping test made during the investigation proves that infiltration supplies can be developed. Studies to determine the degree of connection between the river and aquifer were made on the basis of chemical analyses, sections showing temperature distribution in the aquifer during the pumping test, shapes of water-level profiles in the test area, and shapes of time-drawdown curves for a number of observation wells. Quantitative studies to evaluate the hydrologic constants of the aquifer were made by both graphical and mathematical methods. The transmissibility was determined as 121,000 gpd/ft in the test area; the distance to the line source, 400 feet; and the coefficient of storage, 0.0003. A comparison of river-level fluctuations and water-level fluctuations in observation wells shows that conditions along the 6.4-mile reach of river are not greatly different from those at the site of the pumping test.</p><p>It is estimated that under adverse temperature and river-stage conditions infiltration supplies could be developed to the extent of 280 million gpd in the entire 6.4-mile reach investigated; at average river-water temperature (59° F) about 400 million gpd could be developed. Diagrams were drawn showing the estimated yield of wells of different radii, at various distances from the river, and at various spacings. The coastal plain in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, which covers some 775 square miles, sustains a large urban and rural population, diverse industries, and intensive agricultural developments. The aggregate ground-water withdrawal in 1945 was about 400,000 acre-feet a year, an average of about 360 million gallons a day. The dominant land-form elements are a central lowland plain with tongues extending to the coast, bordering highlands and foothills, and a succession of low hills and mesas aligned northwestward along the coastal edge of the central low- land plain. These low hills and mesas are the land-surface expression of geologic structure in the Newport-Inglewood zone. The highland areas that border the inland edge of the coastal plain are of moderate altitude and relief; most of the ridge crests range from 1,400 to 2,500 feet in altitude, but Santiago Peak in the Santa Ana Mountains attains a height of 5,680 feet above sea level. From these highlands the land surface descends across foothills and aggraded alluvial aprons to the central lowland, Downey Plain, here defined as the surface formed by alluvial aggradation during the post-Pleistocene time of rising base level. The Newport-Inglewood belt of hills and plains (mesas) has a maximum relief of some 500 feet but is widely underlain at a depth of about 30 feet by a surface of marine plantation. As initially formed in late Pleistocene time that surface was largely a featureless plain. Thus the present land-surface forms within the Newport-Inglewood belt measure the earth deformation that has occurred there since late Pleistocene time and so are pertinent with respect to structural features that influence the watertightness of the so-called coastal barrier. The hills and mesas of the Newport-Inglewood belt are cut by six gaps through which tongues of the central lowland extend to the coast. The gaps are trenched in the deformed late Pleistocene surface and are floored with alluvium that is highly permeable in its lower part. The Long Beach-Santa Ana area, with which this report is concerned, encompasses the central and eastern segments of the coastal plain, and includes five of the gaps in succession from northwest to south- east: Dominguez, Alamitos, Sunset, Bolsa, and Santa Ana Gaps. In the Long Beach-Santa Ana area a thick sequence of Quaternary and Tertiary sedimentary rocks has been deposited on a basement of metamorphic and crystalline rocks of pre-Tertiary age. In the broad syncline underlying tl e central part of Downey Plain these sediments probably exceed 20,000 feet in thickness. This report pertains chiefly to the geology and water-bearing character of the rocks that underlie the coastal zone of the Long Beach-Santa Ana area. This area extends some 27 miles from Dominguez Hill on the northwest to Newport Beach on the southeast, has an average width of about 6 miles, includes some 180 square miles, and borders the Pacific Ocean. Of the Quaternary deposits the youngest are of Recent age and comprise silt, sand, gravel, and clay, chiefly of fluvial origin; they are the latest contributions to the alluvial cones of the Los Angeles, San Gabriel, and Santa Ana Rivers; their thickness is as much as 175 feet. The upper division of the Recent deposits, largely fine sand and silt of low permeability, commonly furnishes water only to a few wells of small yield; the lower division is coarse sand and gravel deposited chiefly in two tongues extending respectively, from Whittier Narrows through Dominguez Gap and from Santa Ana Canyon through Santa Ana Gap.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1109","usgsCitation":"Poland, J.F., and Piper, A.M., 1956, Ground-water geology of the coastal zone, Long Beach-Santa Ana area, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1109, Report: v, 162 p.; 8 Plates: 61.10 x 16.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1109.","productDescription":"Report: v, 162 p.; 8 Plates: 61.10 x 16.00 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414038,"rank":11,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25580.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":28705,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28704,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28703,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28702,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28701,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28700,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28699,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28698,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28697,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138793,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1109/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Long Beach-Santa Ana area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.29,\n              33.875\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.29,\n              33.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.848,\n              33.583\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.848,\n              33.875\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.29,\n              33.875\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668d91","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Poland, J. In less than Io years it has invaded the Pacific Northwest, exacting a heavy toll of hatchery salmon. Its first appearance apparently was in Massachusetts where Belding and Merrill' described a disease similar to that now seen on the Pacific Coast. In I946 it was diagnosed in Washington2 and since that time has been observed in an ever increasing number of hatcheries. There are unpublished reports of the same or similar diseases in both California and Washington in the early I93o's.3 The latest outbreaks occurred in the Federal hatcheries at Berlin, New Hampshire, and Cortland, New York, in brook, brown, and rainbow trout.4 There is evidence to indicate that the disease may be much more widely spread in New York State.5 The disease is especially dangerous since little is known of the origin or source of the causative agent. Indeed, the classification of the diplobacillus associated with kidney disease is still uncertain. Thus, with our present knowledge, it is difficult or impossible to eradicate the malady from an infected hatchery. Histopathologic studies were undertaken to clarify the pathology of the disease and to compare the eastern form with the western form. </p>","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Wood, E.M., and Yasutake, W.T., 1956, Histopathology of kidney disease in fish: American Journal of Pathology, v. 32, no. 4, p. 591-603.","productDescription":"13 p. Chandler (1942) and Moore (1946) reported 11 o 13 raccoons (<i>Procyon lotor</i>) trapped in Angelina County, Texas, infected with these intestinal parasites. From 1 to 90 worms occurred in these animals. These strata are discrete lithologic units that contain sedimentary structures oriented in a prevailing easterly direction, they locally rest upon sandstone in the Salt Wash that is ore bearing, and they are believed to cover about one-third of the underlying Salt Wash sandstone member in southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah. Easterly trending planar cross-stratification and trough cross-stratification-type bedding and a general westward coarsening of sediments in the strata suggest they are the products of stream aggradation from westerly source areas.</p>\n<p>Uranium-vanadium deposits in the uppermost, almost continuous, layer of sandstone of the Salt Wash member have been classified according to their association with the conglomerate strata. In 1949, following the discovery of pitchblende on the dump, the mine was reopened, and it was worked until 1953 for uranium. A total of 652 tons of ore that contained an average of 0.28 percent U<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub> was shipped.</p>\n<p>The bedrock consists predominantly of biotite granite, part of the Precamblian Log Cabin batholith, and minor metasedimentary rocks -- biotite-quartz-plagioclase gneiss, amphibole skarn, biotite schist, quartzite, amphibolite, and biotite sk&ouml;ls. The metasedimentary rocks occur as inclusions that trend northeast, essentially parallel to the prevailing foliation in the granite. In places the metasedimentary rocks are crosscut sharply by the granite and form angular, steep-walled blocks in the granite. Faults, confined to a narrow easterly-trending zone through the mine, cut all the Precambrian rocks.</p>\n<p>Mineral deposits of two types are present at the mines 1) sulfide-magnetite ore and 2) a uranium deposit in a filled fissure that cuts the skarn. The sulfide-magnetite deposits are small and consist of pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and at places magnetite. Alpha-helium age determinations on ore magnetite by Hurley indicate that the mineral assemblage is late Precambrian in age. The deposits are pyrometasomatic in origin and possibly related to the granite.</p>\n<p>The uranium deposit consists of pitchblende and associated vein-forming minerals that occur in the Copper King fault and locally in pyrite boxwork adjacent to the fault. Three phases of black pitchblende have been identified -- uraninite, \"coffinite\", and UO<sub>3</sub>-rich pitchblend. Colored secondary minerals are absent. The pitchblende occurs in a steeply plunging, tabular shoot between 45 and 135 feet below the surface that has a horizontal length of about 50 feet. Within the shoot the pitchblende occurs in pods or layers generally only a few feet in height and length and as much as a foot thick that are separated by nearly barren vein. The grade of the ore within the pods ranges from 0.2 percent uranium to as much as 20 percent but averages about 1 to 2 percent. Age determinations by the Pb<sup>206</sup>/U<sup>238</sup> and Pb<sup>207</sup>/U<sup>235</sup>&nbsp;methods on two samples of hard pitchblende from the vein, not from the pyrite boxwork, gave ages by the two methods after suitable common lead corrections, ranging from 55 to 76 million years, corresponding to an early Tertiary age.</p>\n<p>Diamond core drilling and reconnaissance for radioactivity have not disclosed other uranium deposits the Prairie Divide region; nevertheless, it seems likely that other deposits are present.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological collected during the course of an investigation in the Sammamish Lake area immediately east of Seattle, King County, Washington. &nbsp;Most of these investigations are conducted in cooperation with the State of Washington, Department of Conservation and Development, Division of Water Resources. &nbsp;However, a few investigations, including the one in the Sammamish Lake area, have been made entirely with Federal funds. &nbsp;A similar investigation is now being made in the area to the west, including the city of Seattle and metropolitan areas to the north and south. &nbsp;It is planned that results of teh two investigations will be combined into a single comprehencive report. &nbsp;In order that the data collected can be made available sooner, this report as been prepared with only Feldspar and quartz crystals locally attain a length of more than 1 foot. Some muscovite mica up to 2 inches in diameter occurs, but the major part of the mica is contained in concentrations, containing mica flakes one-half inch across, that often are as large as 10 feet across. Ruby mica of strategic grade has been obtained from float from this deposit.</p><p>None of the rarer minerals such as beryl, columbite-tantalite or cassiterite that often occur in pegmatites were observed in the preliminary examination; and small-size concentrate samples obtained by panning stream sands from the area did not contain recognizable amounts of these rarer minerals. One sample contained a few grains identified as cassiterite. No radioactive anomalies were detected in the pegmatites, or in the stream concentrates.</p><p>The large tonnage of material available arid the favorable location by a good anchorage on an ocean route are favorable factors that should contribute to the development of the deposits. Other deposits of comparable size probably occur in the area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr55159","usgsCitation":"Sainsbury, C., 1955, Geology of two areas of pegmatite deposits in southeastern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 55-159, Report: 38 p.; 4 Plates: 16.79 x 19.24 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr55159.","productDescription":"Report: 38 p.; 4 Plates: 16.79 x 19.24 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":421475,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0159/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":421474,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0159/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":421473,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0159/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":421472,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0159/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":421471,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0159/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148961,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1955/0159/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"southeastern Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -138.61817062769444,\n              59.425247532402835\n            ],\n            [\n              -138.61817062769444,\n              52.06835830001566\n            ],\n            [\n              -130.2334763264309,\n              52.06835830001566\n            ],\n            [\n              -130.2334763264309,\n              59.425247532402835\n            ],\n            [\n              -138.61817062769444,\n              59.425247532402835\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c773","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sainsbury, C.L.","contributorId":99968,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sainsbury","given":"C.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171662,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
