Under the assumption of constant concentration of hydrate irrespective of porosity, the average bulk hydrate amounts for the lower portion of marine sediments above the bottom simulating reflector in the Blake Ridge area, south-eastern Atlantic Margin, is estimated to be about 8.7% of the sediments when using velocity analysis and about 10% when using amplitude blanking. Under the assumption of variable hydrate concentration proportional to the porosity, the estimate is about 8.1% when using velocity information and about 10% when using amplitude blanking. </p><p>The estimation method using amplitude is comparable to the estimation by interval velocity and provides a convenient way of quantitative classification of the degree of hydrate cementation. These activities were directed toward the application of remotely sensed data to surveying and mapping. Data were processed and various products were generated for the Black Hills area in the US and the Ningxiang area of the PRC. This 1990 volume continues the bulletin format started in 1988. As in 1989, this volume separates shorter contributions as Geologic Notes from more extensive Articles.</p><p>This 1990 volume of 18 Articles and 4 Geologic Notes represents the broad range of USGS research activities carried out in Alaska over the past few years. These studies include topics on mineral and other resources such as gold (Y eend), platinum-group elements (Cathrall and Antweiler), coal (Roberts, Stricker, and Affolter), and petroleum (Howell, Bird, and others). These contributions, which include full-length Articles and shorter Geologic Notes, are grouped under two broad headings: Mineral Resource Studies (ten papers) and Geologic Framework Studies (eleven papers). Reports on mineral resources discuss exploration geochemistry in the Howard Pass quadrangle, lditarod quadrangle, and Admiralty Island, a mineral resource appraisal of the Bethel quadrangle, a fluid-inclusion study in the Nome Gold District, geochemistry of lode-gold deposits in the Seldovia quadrangle, a new occurrence of placer gold in the Seldovia quadrangle, gold in coal in the Healy quadrangle, experimental abrasion of detrital gold, and a new occurrence of rareearth minerals in southeastern Alaska. Under the heading of Geologic Framework Studies are reports on sedimentology and (or) stratigraphy in the Seldovia, Lime Hills, and Medfra quadrangles, the Kandik region, and the Alexander terrane in southeastern Alaska. Other papers report on the isotope geochemistry of veins and thermal maturity of the Kandik region, metamorphism and deformation of the Yukon-Tanana and Taylor Mountain terranes in eastcentral Alaska, magnetic susceptibilities of plutonic rocks in southeastern Alaska, terrane nomenclature in northern Alaska, and uplift of Mt. McKinley. These studies span nearly the entire State from the North Slope and Brooks Range to interior, western, southwestern, southcentral, and southeastern Alaska (fig. 1 ).</p><p>Two bibliographies on Alaskan geology at the end of the volume list ( 1) reports about Alaska in USGS publications released in 1991, and (2) reports about Alaska by USGS authors in publications outside the USGS in The modified model program is called MODFLOWARC. \r\nSimulation programs such as MODFLOW generally require large amounts of input data and produce large amounts of output data. Viewing data graphically, generating head contours, and creating or editing model data arrays such as hydraulic conductivity are examples of tasks that currently are performed either by the use of independent software packages or by tedious manual editing, manipulating, and transferring data. Programs such as GIS programs are commonly used to facilitate preparation of the model input data and analyze model output data; however, auxiliary programs are frequently required to translate data between programs. Data translations are required when different programs use different data formats. Thus, the user might use GIS techniques to create model input data, run a translation program to convert input data into a format compatible with the ground-water flow model, run the model, run a translation program to convert the model output into the correct format for GIS, and use GIS to display and analyze this output. MODFLOWARC, avoids the two translation steps and transfers data directly to and from the ground-water-flow model. \r\n\r\nThis report documents the design and use of MODFLOWARC and includes instructions for data input/output of the Basic, Block-centered flow, River, Recharge, Well, Drain, Evapotranspiration, General-head boundary, and Streamflow-routing packages. The modification to MODFLOW and the Streamflow-Routing package was minimized. Flow charts and computer-program code describe the modifications to the original computer codes for each of these packages.
