Natural vegetation constituted 4% of the food volume. Widgeongrass (Ruppia maritima) and redhead grass (Potamogeton perfoliatus) constituted the greatest percent volume and frequency of occurrence among the plant species, whereas wild celery (Vallisneria americana) constituted only a trace of the food volume. These results contrast with historical records of food habits of canvasbacks in Chesapeake Bay. Canvasback population estimates during the 1970’s were examined to detect annual and seasonal changes in distribution. Linear regression analyses of winter canvasback populations in the bay showed a significant decline in the upper-bay and middle-bay populations, but no significant changes in the lower-bay and Potomac River populations. The changes in winter distribution and abundance of the canvasback appear related to changes in natural food availability, which is the result of altered environmental conditions.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.2307/1351718","usgsCitation":"Perry, M., and Uhler, F., 1988, Food habits and distribution of wintering canvasbacks, Aythya valisineria, on Chesapeake Bay: Estuaries, v. 11, no. 1, p. 57-67, https://doi.org/10.2307/1351718.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"57","endPage":"67","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196172,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland, Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Chesapeake Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.73644178817331,\n              38.508637481363934\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.79436548956258,\n              39.00549647859455\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.85228919095114,\n              39.279534471199696\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.80595010915324,\n              39.463124399060035\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.76540351818103,\n              39.539105265513626\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.85808144040372,\n              39.62392673426072\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.17086942790378,\n              39.570367357991955\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.43731845429353,\n              39.42286561285235\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.66322088971036,\n              39.32883796883303\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.64584377929404,\n              38.97848471313449\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.74431407165478,\n              38.81619535351655\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.08606390985017,\n              38.892878212169336\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.12661050082237,\n              38.766532986524226\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.29458923485066,\n              38.6490117216554\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.4104366376285,\n              38.45876188172073\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.31775871540653,\n              38.19976115070776\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.06289442929435,\n              37.54592249039162\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.36409767651749,\n              37.435619388466606\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.34092819596167,\n              37.28368683100847\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.03972494874006,\n              37.15453331151306\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.7327293313781,\n              37.11759170281907\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.6921827404059,\n              37.015909311631304\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.65163614943368,\n              36.784306497764675\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.58792007790564,\n              36.710045237088934\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.22879312929392,\n              36.686823858030536\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.97392884318242,\n              36.83068328068869\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.99130595359878,\n              37.27907801385176\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.80015773901535,\n              37.55969892262445\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.58584004387605,\n              37.86670840751543\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.60900952443193,\n              38.00832674996687\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.72485692720973,\n              38.3225610859493\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.73644178817331,\n              38.508637481363934\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"11","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae76e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Perry, Matthew C. 0000-0001-6452-9534","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6452-9534","contributorId":16372,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Perry","given":"Matthew C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332316,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Uhler, F.M.","contributorId":81965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Uhler","given":"F.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332317,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Certain trace elements and organochlorine compounds have been found at sufficiently high concentrations in bird tissues or their foods to expect adverse effects in these birds, based upon results of field and laboratory studies conducted with other avian species. The decline and recovery of populations of many avian species have been recorded, including some associated with organochlorine contamination. The present paper summarizes available information on the occurrence and potential effects of contaminants upon birds in these two regions.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Marine Pollution Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"3647_Ohlendorf.pdf","usgsCitation":"Ohlendorf, H.M., and Fleming, W.J., 1988, Birds and environmental contaminants in San Francisco and Chesapeake Bays: Marine Pollution Bulletin, v. 19, no. 9, p. 487-495.","productDescription":"487-495","startPage":"487","endPage":"495","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":17856,"rank":200,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6V6N-488Y8BD-1RF&_user=3109910&_coverDate=09%2F30%2F1988&_rdoc=11&_fmt=high&_orig=browse&_srch=doc-info(%23toc%235819%231988%23999809990%23413382%23FLP%23display%23Volume)&_cdi=5819&_sort=d&_docanchor=&_ct=11&_acct=C000038819&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=3109910&md5=ba60e89ea5ceb6728a8ebb0b245f99fc","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":196453,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adde4b07f02db686a4d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ohlendorf, H. Selenium entering aquatic systems through wastewater inflow can accumulate in aquatic food chains to levels that may be toxic to fish and wildlife species. Mallard reproduction is known to be adversely affected by 10 ppm selenium in the diet (containing 7–10 percent moisture, in the form of selenomethionine); however, hatching success of eggs laid by black-crowned night-herons fed a 10 ppm selenium diet, as selenomethionine, in this study was not different from eggs laid by herons fed an unsupplemented diet (0.1 ppm selenium). Organ weights, hemoglobin concentrations, hematocrits, eggshell thickness, and shell thickness did not differ between controls and herons receiving 10 ppm selenium. Developmental malformations commonly associated with selenium exposure in other birds were not observed in heron embryos or hatchlings in the 10 ppm group. However, three-day-old hatchlings from herons fed 10 ppm selenium had shorter radius-ulna and femur lengths and higher liver malondialdehyde concentrations than controls. Selenium residues in heron eggs were lower than those reported in mallards fed the same amount of selenium. Results of this study suggest that herons are less sensitive to the toxic effects of selenium than mallards. Two days later, each survivor was weighed again and patagially tagged for identification after fledging. Resightings of marked fledglings were made during weekly 2—d intensive observations yielding four estimates of postfledging survival. Before fledging, only OP—dosed birds died (18.5%), and OP—dosed survivors lost more mass (5.2%, P = .001) than controls (1.4%) but their masses on day 18 were only slightly lower (2% of control mean, P = .10). Brain cholinesterase activity, a sensitive indicator of OP exposure in birds, was depressed and average of 93% in OP—dosed nestlings that died compared to controls, and an average of 46% in OP—dosed nestlings alive on day 18. Age at fledging, postfledging survival, flocking behavior, and habitat use, however, did not differ between OP—dosed and control birds. The effects of the OP on the nestlings appeared to be rapid, to be reversible in survivors, and did not extend into the postfledging period. In addition, we found no relationship between body mass at fledging and postfledging survival.
","largerWorkTitle":"","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.2307/1941008","usgsCitation":"Stromborg, K., Grue, C., Nichols, J., Hepp, G.R., Hines, J., and Bourne, H.C., 1988, Postfledging survival of European starlings exposed as nestlings to an organophosphorus insecticide: Ecology, v. 69, no. 3, p. 590-601, https://doi.org/10.2307/1941008.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"590","endPage":"601","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":195816,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","city":"Laurel","otherGeospatial":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.8328857421875,\n              39.0130484148106\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.71821594238281,\n              39.0130484148106\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.71821594238281,\n              39.089034905217474\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.8328857421875,\n              39.089034905217474\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.8328857421875,\n              39.0130484148106\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"69","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683a11","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stromborg, K. Cause of death is diagnosed by demonstration of depressed brain cholinesterase (ChE) activity in combination with chemical detection of anticholinesterase residue in the affected specimen. ChE depression is determined by comparison of the affected specimen to normal ChE activity for a sample of control specimens of the same species, but timely procurement of controls is not always possible. Therefore, a reference file of normal whole brain ChE activity is provided for 48 species of wild birds from North America representing 11 orders and 23 families for use as emergency substitutes in diagnosis of anticholinesterase poisoning. The ChE values, based on 83 sets of wild control specimens from across the United States, are reproducible provided the described procedures are duplicated. Overall, whole brain ChE activity varied nearly three-fold among the 48 species represented, but it was usually similar for closely related species. However, some species were statistically separable in most families and some species of the same genus differed as much as 50%.","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-24.1.51","usgsCitation":"Hill, E.F., 1988, Brain cholinesterase activity of apparently normal wild birds: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 24, no. 1, p. 51-61, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-24.1.51.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"51","endPage":"61","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194072,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fcd3d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hill, E. The relationship between estimated fat content at capture and length of stay (days between marking and last observation) of Semipalmated Sandpipers at one of these staging areas in eastern Maine was studied during 1980-1982. Total body mass and wing chord length were used to estimate fat content. When data were analyzed by week of initial capture, mean length of stay of both adults and juveniles decreased with increasing fat content. This supports the assumption that resumption of migration is affected by fat content at staging areas for long-distance nonstop flights. However, fat content at capture was a poor predictor of length of stay, which suggests that other factors are more important in determining length of stay.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1368839","usgsCitation":"Dunn, P., May, T., McCollough, M., and Howe, M., 1988, Length of stay and fat content of migrant semipalmated sandpipers in eastern Maine: Condor, v. 90, no. 4, p. 824-835, https://doi.org/10.2307/1368839.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"824","endPage":"835","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193558,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"90","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b17e4b07f02db6a6060","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dunn, P.O.","contributorId":21650,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dunn","given":"P.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331185,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"May, T.A.","contributorId":32258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"May","given":"T.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331186,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McCollough, M.A.","contributorId":84023,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCollough","given":"M.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331188,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Howe, M.A.","contributorId":70462,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howe","given":"M.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":331187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

In addition, fidelity to wintering areas was compared between sexes and between coastal and inland wintering sites. We did not find evidence of age- or sex-specific differences in distribution patterns (P > 0.10). Black ducks exhibited a stronger fidelity to coastal wintering areas (P < 0.01), but there were no sex-specific differences (P > 0.30). We believe that the early formation of breeding pairs and possibly predictable food resources may reduce age – sex segregation in distribution patterns during winter. Concentrations of chemical residues in brains were less than known lethal levels; certain observations and analyses did indicate the possibility of past organochlorine-induced bat deaths. Levels of contaminants in bats declined slowly during the 10-year sampling period, but heavy residue burdens persist. In the fasted group, mean hydroxyproline: creatinine (OHP:C) was greater (P< 0.05) at week 4 compared to baseline at week 0. Between fasted deer and deer fed high protein-high energy (HPHE) and low protein-high energy (LPHE) diets, no difference in OHP:C ratios was detected during the initial 4 wk of the study. Urinary OHP:C ratios were significantly (P< 0.05) greater in the fasted group during refeeding, concomitant with greater feed consumption and weight gain. There was also a significant (P< 0.02) time effect in the fasted-refed group; OHP:C ratios increased during these two phases of the study. There was no difference between the HPHE and LPHE fed deer in renal OHP excretion. However, mean OHP:C ratios in yearlings (16.8 ± 2.2) were greater (P<0.001) than in the adults (7.5 ± 1.2) of those groups, indicating a higher collagen turnover rate. Urinary OHP:C shows potential as an indicator of growth and starvation, and the data presented may serve as reference values.

","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-24.1.75","usgsCitation":"DelGiudice, G., Seal, U., and Mech, L., 1988, Response of urinary hydroxyproline to dietary protein and fasting in white-tailed deer: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 24, no. 1, p. 75-79, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-24.1.75.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"75","endPage":"79","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":195844,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8157","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"DelGiudice, G. This degradation did not occur with other avian tissues (muscle and liver). For this reason, a combined extraction-cleanup column chromatographic procedure, without added heat, was developed for the determination of dicofol in avian eggs. Homogenized subsamples of eggs were mixed with sodium sulfate, and the mixture was added as the top layer on a column prepacked with Florisil. The dicofol and other compounds of interest were then eluted with ethyl etherhexane. The extracts, relatively free from lipids, were quantitated on a gas chromatograph equipped with a 63Ni electron-capture detector and a methyl silicone capillary column. Recoveries from chicken eggs, fortified with dicofol and other DDT-related compounds, averaged 96%. Analysis of eggs of eastern screech-owls, fed a meat diet containing 10 ppm technical Kelthane, showed that both dicofol and DCBP were present. Results were confirmed by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry. This method is rapid and reliable, involves a minimum of sample handling, and is well suited for high volume determination of dicofol in eggs and other avian tissues.
","language":"English","publisher":"Association of Official Analytical Chemists","doi":"10.1093/jaoac/71.3.539","usgsCitation":"Krynitsky, A.J., Stafford, C.J., and Wiemeyer, S.N., 1988, Combined extraction-cleanup column chromatographic procedure for determination of dicofol in avian eggs: Journal of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, v. 71, no. 3, p. 539-542, https://doi.org/10.1093/jaoac/71.3.539.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"539","endPage":"542","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":195843,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"71","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2020-01-14","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae745","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krynitsky, A. Geometric mean DDE concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in Caspian Tern eggs (6.93 ppm, wet weight) than in eggs of other species (1.92-2.84 ppm). Mean mercury concentrations were significantly greater in Caspian Tern (1.25 ppm) and forster's Tern (0.90 ppm) eggs than in night-herons (0.41 ppm), but night-heron eggs contained higher concentrations of mercury than did the eggs of Snowy Egrets (0.21 ppm). There were no significant differences among species for mean concentrations of trans-nonachlor or PCBs; other organochlorines occurred in fewer than half of the samples, so means were not compared. Caspian Tern eggs from San Francisco Bay had higher PCB concentrations (4.85 ppm) than did eggs of this species from San Diego Bay, California (1.70 ppm) or Elkhorn Slough, California (1.83 ppm), but we detected no significant differences in mean concentrations of other organochlorines. DDE concentrations in 5 of 47 (10.6%) night-heron eggs from San Francisco Bay exceeded 8 ppm, a level associated with impaired reproduction in this species. DDE concentrations were negatively correlated with eggshell thickness in night-herons and egrets.","language":"English","publisher":"Waterbird It has been reported to be teratogenic to avian embryos following spray application of the eggs. The embryotoxic and teratogenic potential of Krenite was examined in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). At 96 h of development, eggs were briefly immersed in distilled water or in Krenite formulation in distilled water at concentrations of 1.5, 6.5, or 30% fosamine ammonium. At 6.5% active ingredient (a.i.), Krenite reduced hatching success in bobwhite and mallards to 85 and 33% of that in the distilled-water controls. At 30% a.i., Krenite caused 95 to 100% mortality in both species by the time of hatching. Early embryonic growth was impaired by 30% Krenite in both species. There was no evidence of teratogenesis of the axial skeleton, as reported previously in chickens and Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). Most abnormal embryos had severe edema and some stunting. Mallard hatchlings from the 1.5 and 6.5% Krenite groups weighed significantly less than controls and had lower plasma alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, with elevated plasma glucose and cholesterol concentrations. Brain acetylcholinesterase activity was unaffected by Krenite in embryos and hatchlings.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry","doi":"10.1002/etc.5620070110","usgsCitation":"Hoffman, D.J., 1988, Effects of krenite® brush control agent (fosamine ammonium) on embryonic development in mallards and bobwhite: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, v. 7, no. 1, p. 69-75, https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.5620070110.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"69","endPage":"75","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193479,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1988-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db62505a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoffman, D. We observed that reproductive success at one colony became reduced in 1981 when we entered that colony to collect eggs for chemical analysis and to mark nests for an assessment of nesting success.  Those pelicans produced only 0.5 Y/N contrasted to pelicans nesting at an undisturbed colony that produced about 1.2 Y/N.  No colonies were entered in 1982 and both produced about 1.1 Y/N.  We concluded that our activities reduced the success of that one disturbed colony.  We suggest that the sample-egg technique should not be used in American White Pelican colonies, in-colony activities should be very limited, and researchers in bird colonies should attempt more often to assess the effects of their own activiites","language":"English","publisher":"Waterbird Society","doi":"10.2307/1521002","usgsCitation":"Boellstorff, D., Anderson, D.W., Ohlendorf, H.M., and O’Neill, E., 1988, Reproductive effects of nest-marking studies in an American white pelican colony: Colonial Waterbirds, v. 11, no. 2, p. 215-219, https://doi.org/10.2307/1521002.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"215","endPage":"219","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":199694,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"11","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a55e4b07f02db62ca82","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Boellstorff, D.E.","contributorId":92380,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boellstorff","given":"D.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anderson, D. The Waterfowl Hunter Questionnaire Survey separately estimates the harvest of ducks and geese using cluster samples of hunters who buy duck stamps at sample post offices.  The Waterfowl Parts Collection estimates species, age, and sex ratios from parts solicited from successful hunters who responded to the Waterfowl Hunter Questionnaire Survey in previous years.  These ratios are used to partition the duck and goose harvest into species, age, and sex specific harvest estimates.  Annual estimates are correlated because successful hunters who respond to the Questionnaire Survey in one year may be asked to contribute to the Parts Collection for the next three years.  Bootstrap variance estimates are used because covariances among years are difficult to estimate.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"American Statistical Association, Proceedings of the Section on Survey Research Methods","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Geissler, P., 1988, Variance estimation for the Federal Waterfowl Harvest Surveys: American Statistical Association, Proceedings of the Section on Survey Research Methods, v. 1988, p. 698-703.","productDescription":"698-703","startPage":"698","endPage":"703","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194283,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1988","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602b99","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Geissler, P.H.","contributorId":24038,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geissler","given":"P.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335970,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Selenium at 10 ppm as selenomethionine or 25 ppm as sodium selenite caused a 40-44% decrease in the total number of eggs that hatched compared to controls. Selenium at 25 ppm (sodium selenite) resulted in a 19% decrease in mean embryonic weight at 18 d of incubation, accompanied by a 6% decrease in crown-rump length. Ten parts per million Se as selenomethionine was more teratogenic than sodium selenite at 25 ppm. Selenomethionine (10 ppm Se) resulted in an incidence of 13.1% malformations that were often multiple, whereas sodium selenite (10 and 25 ppm Se) resulted in 3.6 and 4.2% malformations. The teratogenicity of selenomethionine was confirmed in a second experiment in which mallards received 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 ppm Se as selenomethionine, resulting in 0.9, 0.5, 1.4, 6.8, and 67.9% malformations, respectively. These malformations included hydrocephaly, microphthalmia, lower bill defects, and foot defects with ectrodactyly. Both forms of selenium increased the incidence of edema and stunted embryonic growth. Selenomethionine (10 ppm Se) resulted in a significant increase of approximately 40% in plasma glutathione peroxidase activity and a 70% increase in sorbitol dehydrogenase activity (indicative of hepatotoxicity) in hatchlings. Sodium selenite (25 ppm Se) resulted in fourfold elevation in plasma uric acid concentration, indicative of renal alteration. Selenomethionine accumulated much better in eggs than did sodium selenite. These findings indicate that selenomethionine is considerably more teratogenic and generally more embryotoxic than sodium selenite, probably due to higher uptake of selenomethionine.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor and Francis","doi":"10.1080/15287398809531178","usgsCitation":"Hoffman, D.J., and Heinz, G.H., 1988, Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of selenium in the diet of mallards: Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, v. 24, no. 4, p. 477-490, https://doi.org/10.1080/15287398809531178.","productDescription":"477-490","startPage":"477","endPage":"490","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193444,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269450,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1080/15287398809531178"}],"volume":"24","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e479fe4b07f02db492f66","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoffman, D. Adult birds from that area were emaciated, had subacute to extensive chronic hepatic lesions, and had excess fluid and fibrin in the peritoneal cavity. Biochemical changes in their livers included elevated glycogen and non-protein-bound sulfhydryl concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activity but lowered protein, total sulfhydryl, and protein-bound sulfhydryl concentrations. Congenital malformations observed grossly in embryos were often multiple and included anophthalmia, microphthalmia, abnormal beaks, amelia, micromelia, ectrodactyly, and hydrocephaly. Mean concentrations of selenium in livers (94.4 ppm, dry weight) and kidneys (96.6 ppm) of birds collected at the Kesterson ponds were about 10 times those found at a nearby control area (8.3 and 12.2 ppm). We conclude that selenium present in the agricultural drainage water supplied to the Kesterson ponds accumulated in the food chain of aquatic birds to toxic concentrations and caused the lesion and other changes observed.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/15287398809531141","usgsCitation":"Ohlendorf, H.M., Kilness, A.W., Simmons, J.L., Stroud, R.K., Hoffman, D.J., and Moore, J.F., 1988, Selenium toxicosis in wild aquatic birds: Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, v. 24, no. 1, p. 67-92, https://doi.org/10.1080/15287398809531141.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"67","endPage":"92","numberOfPages":"26","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197770,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Merced County","otherGeospatial":"Kesterton National Wildlife Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"id\":\"208\",\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Merced\",\"state\":\"CA\"},\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-120.0538,37.1824],[-120.063,37.1787],[-120.078,37.1778],[-120.0947,37.1718],[-120.1062,37.1681],[-120.1224,37.1671],[-120.1397,37.1647],[-120.1466,37.1652],[-120.1536,37.1679],[-120.1645,37.1651],[-120.1726,37.1664],[-120.1807,37.1627],[-120.1905,37.1618],[-120.2021,37.1649],[-120.2304,37.1638],[-120.2396,37.1592],[-120.277,37.154],[-120.288,37.153],[-120.2961,37.1502],[-120.3041,37.1443],[-120.3173,37.1392],[-120.3277,37.1364],[-120.3317,37.1328],[-120.3362,37.1277],[-120.3414,37.1268],[-120.3593,37.1221],[-120.3679,37.1207],[-120.3801,37.1252],[-120.4008,37.1196],[-120.4071,37.1136],[-120.4404,37.1048],[-120.4605,37.0987],[-120.4726,37.095],[-120.4801,37.0954],[-120.5417,37.0459],[-120.8962,36.7594],[-120.9103,36.7483],[-120.9183,36.7414],[-120.9334,36.7521],[-121.0597,36.8032],[-121.1159,36.826],[-121.138,36.8361],[-121.1439,36.842],[-121.1453,36.8528],[-121.1524,36.8632],[-121.1617,36.8694],[-121.1653,36.8766],[-121.1695,36.8838],[-121.1789,36.8914],[-121.1819,36.8986],[-121.1839,36.9099],[-121.188,36.913],[-121.1927,36.9143],[-121.2001,36.9142],[-121.2151,36.9144],[-121.2232,36.9152],[-121.2291,36.9206],[-121.2333,36.9287],[-121.2329,36.9364],[-121.2234,36.947],[-121.2143,36.9539],[-121.2127,36.958],[-121.2116,36.9607],[-121.2314,36.97],[-121.2424,36.9748],[-121.2473,36.9838],[-121.2468,36.9902],[-121.2446,36.9947],[-121.2327,37.0008],[-121.2368,37.0071],[-121.237,37.0152],[-121.2447,37.0237],[-121.2478,37.0314],[-121.2341,37.0366],[-121.2232,37.0399],[-121.2247,37.0535],[-121.2098,37.0582],[-121.2088,37.0655],[-121.2176,37.0717],[-121.2246,37.0771],[-121.2311,37.0833],[-121.241,37.0864],[-121.2439,37.0891],[-121.2377,37.0937],[-121.2314,37.0969],[-121.231,37.1015],[-121.2265,37.1065],[-121.2248,37.112],[-121.2192,37.1171],[-121.2188,37.1243],[-121.2223,37.1283],[-121.2266,37.1369],[-121.1631,37.1886],[-121.1267,37.2167],[-121.0795,37.2523],[-120.9662,37.3434],[-120.9762,37.3492],[-120.9811,37.3641],[-120.9754,37.3669],[-120.9749,37.3714],[-120.9726,37.3747],[-120.9744,37.3773],[-120.9836,37.3754],[-120.982,37.3804],[-120.9832,37.384],[-120.9844,37.3854],[-120.9925,37.3857],[-120.9858,37.399],[-120.5964,37.5518],[-120.3873,37.6347],[-120.3157,37.5173],[-120.3102,37.4947],[-120.2991,37.4852],[-120.2778,37.4527],[-120.2748,37.4378],[-120.2828,37.43],[-120.2804,37.4201],[-120.2716,37.412],[-120.2575,37.3903],[-120.2041,37.3213],[-120.2018,37.3145],[-120.1988,37.3086],[-120.1907,37.3032],[-120.1865,37.2982],[-120.1807,37.2919],[-120.1847,37.286],[-120.1858,37.2806],[-120.1775,37.2611],[-120.163,37.2499],[-120.149,37.2413],[-120.1339,37.2346],[-120.116,37.2293],[-120.094,37.2212],[-120.0858,37.2181],[-120.0794,37.2131],[-120.0765,37.2095],[-120.0695,37.2032],[-120.0626,37.1955],[-120.0579,37.1869],[-120.0538,37.1824]]]}}]}","volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fbe4b07f02db5f4a39","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ohlendorf, H. Because of the brief period provided by the Act for data collection, habitat mapping, and habitat assessment, the USFWS in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Field Office, used digital Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data and digital terrain data to produce land cover and terrain maps. A computer assisted digital analysis of Landsat MSS data was used because coverage by aerial photographs was incomplete for the refuge and because the level of detail obtained from Landsat data was adequate to meet most USFWS research, management and planning needs. During 1976-83, from 4 to 64 clearcuts were created each year, opening up large contiguous blocks of forest. A combination of mist nets, ground traps, nightlighting techniques, and trained dogs were used to capture and band 1,884 birds during the first 5 years. Capture and recapture data (totaling 3,009 observations) were used with both demographically closed and open population models to estimate population size and, for open population models, summer survival. Flying young, especially young males, represented the greatest proportion of all captures; analysis showed that young males were more prone to capture than young females. Male courtship began about 24 March each year, usually when there was still snow in wooded areas. Males ~2 years old dominated singing grounds during April each year, but this situation changed and first-year males dominated singing grounds in May. Singing males shifted from older established singing grounds to new clearcuts soon after we initiated forest management. Many males were subdominant at singing grounds despite an abundance of unoccupied openings. Three hundred adult females were captured and, except for 1978, the majority were ~2 years old. The year in which female homing rate was lowest(1979) was preceded by the year with the largest number of l-year-old brood female captures and a summer drought. Summer survival of young was lowest in 1978 and was attributed to summer drought. The year 1979 had an abnormally cool and wet spring, and was the poorest for production of young. Capture ratios of young-to-adult females obtained by nightlighting could be used to predict production on our study area. Closed population model estimates did not seem to fit either young or adult data sets well. Instead, a partially open capture-recapture model that allowed death but no immigration seemed to fit best. Only the number of males in the population changed significantly during the study. An increase from 88 males in 1976 to 156 in 1980 was attributed to habitat management. Singingmale surveys on our area detected little change in the number of singing males, but our independent population estimates from mark-recapture data showed a larger total male population by 1980. Annual density estimates for all age and sex classes ranged from 19 to 25 birds/l00 ha. A hypothesis on the breeding system of the American woodcock is presented as well as a discussion of management implications, including the importance of creating high-quality habitat on private lands.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","collaboration":"NTIS Accession Number: PB88-249263   3577_Dwyer.pdf","usgsCitation":"Dwyer, T., Sepik, G., Derleth, E., and McAuley, D., 1988, Demographic Characteristics of a Maine Woodcock Population and Effects of Habitat Management: Fish and Wildlife Research No. 4, iii, 29.","productDescription":"iii, 29","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":202640,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab2e4b07f02db66ed68","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dwyer, T.J.","contributorId":56177,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dwyer","given":"T.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343497,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sepik, G.F.","contributorId":101348,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sepik","given":"G.F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343498,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Derleth, E.L.","contributorId":31483,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Derleth","given":"E.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343496,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"McAuley, D.G. 0000-0003-3674-6392","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3674-6392","contributorId":15296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McAuley","given":"D.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
