Jackson and Moore (1992) reported the presence of cassiterite (SnO2)-bearing heavy-mineral concentrates from stream sediment samples that were collected during a regional geochemical reconnaissance of the Greenville 1° x 2° quadrangle. The data reported here confirm identified in selected heavy-mineral concentrate samples. In addition, anomalously high concentrations of barium, beryllium, lanthanum, and thorium are also reported for parts of the same areas. No significant mineral deposits are known to occur in the study areas. There was, however, minor production of monazite from several nearby localities (Sloan, 1908), and gold was produced from deposits in the northeastern part of Greenville County and nearby Spartanburg County (McCauley and Butler, 1966). The three areas selected for resampling are located in the Inner Piedmont physiographic province of South Carolina (see index map). The generalized tectonic setting of the region and the locations of the study is just north of Greenville, S.C. Much of it is within the moderately to steeply sloped terrane of Paris Mountain State Park where elevations reach approximately 600 m. Simpsonville, S.C., is neat the center of the second study area, and the southernmost study area is near Hickory Tavern, S.C. Both the Simpsonville and Hickory Tavern study areas are in more gently rolling Piedmont terrane. Each of the sampled areas is drained by tributaries of the Enoree and Reedy Rivers. Parts of three different thrust sheets underlie the region covered by this study (fig. 1); in ascending structural position, they are the Six Mile, Paris Mountain, and Laurens thrust sheets (Nelson and others, 1987). Nelson (1988, p. 7) described the contacts between these sheets as being along unnamed faults. The rocks in and around the study areas have undergone sillimanite-muscovite-grade metamorphism (Nelson, 1988, p. 9). Nelson (1988, p. 13) reports that the Six Mile thrust sheet was metamorphosed about 344 Ma. The geology of these sheets as described in this study, including geologic contacts, rock descriptions, and unit names, generally follows that of Nelson and others (1987, 1989). Within the Paris Mountain study area, rocks of the Paris Mountain thrust sheet predominate (fig. 2) and consist of a biotite-muscovite-sillimanite schist (EZsp) that has extensive lenses of fine- to medium- grained biotite granite gneiss (Pzgp). Areas of biotite granite gneiss that occur in the southern part of the Paris Mountain study area contain extensive pegmatitic and leucogranitic phases. These pegmatitic zones consist mostly of coarse-grained microcline feldspar and quartz with minor amounts of muscovite, biotite, and garnet. Smaller pegmatite lenses (<0.5 m thick) that occur within the biotite-muscovite-sillimanite schist of the Paris Mountain study area are generally of similar mineralogy, although some contain tourmaline crystals up to 5 cm in length. The Six Mile thrust sheet underlies the northern edge of the Paris Mountain study area, where it is composed of gneissic biotitic granites of the Caesars Head Granite (figs. 1 and 2). The northwestern part of the Simpsonville study area (figs. 1 and 3), within the Paris Mountain thrust sheet, is underlain by a biotite-muscovite-sillimanite schist (EZsp) that contains lenses of biotite granite gneiss (Pzgp). The dump is a closed municipal-industrial landfill that has been ranked as Tennessee's potentially most dangerous hazardous-waste site. Toxic constituents of concern at the dump include residues from the manufacture of organochlorine pesticides. The dump overlies an unconfined aquifer of unconsolidated sands, silts, and clays. During average hydrologic conditions, ground waterflows beneath the dump at a mean velocity of approximately 3 feet per day and discharges to the Wolf River. Leachate from the dump mixes with underlying ground water, resulting in increased concentrations of dissolved solids and organic carbon downgradient from the dump. The mobility of chlordane, a representative organochlorine pesticide, is limited by its low solubility and its strong affinity for sand, silt, and clays of the aquifer. Degradation of chlordane may occur slowly, if at all, in the aquifer. Based on estimates of mean ground-water velocity and retardation of the pesticide due to sorption, mean travel times for chlordane migrating from the dump to the ground-water discharge zone are of the order of 50 to 500 years. Simulations of chlordane concentration resulting from the discharge of contaminated ground water and complete mixing in the Wolf River are sensitive to assumptions about chlordane persistence in the unconfined aquifer. These categories included water systems that obtained water from aquifers in glacial drift, bedrock, or both, as well as those that obtained water from surface-water sources. Data on ground-water development were collected for 182 municipal water-supply systems for the period 1870-1987. Of the 182 systems, 135 used ground water for supply. Wells in glacial-drift aquifers supplied water for 60 municipalities; wells in bedrock aquifers supplied 58 municipalities. Combinations of wells in bedrock and glacial-drift aquifers supplied 17 municipalities. Surface-water sources supplied 45 municipalities; two municipalities used surface water and ground water. Of the 182 municipal systems, withdrawal data were available for only 145. Withdrawal data were collected for the period 1903-1985. Analysis of annual ground-water withdrawal data for the 145 municipal water-supply systems indicates that average annual per capita municipal ground-water withdrawal ranged from 60 gallons per day per person in 1915 to 166 gallons per day per person in 1973. The maximum reported groundwater withdrawal for the area was 103 million gallons per day in 1979. Records from most municipalities include long periods for which no ground-water withdrawal data are available. The average annual per capita data among the municipalities varies over the period of record because of incomplete reporting of pumping rates, unusually high pumping rates, short-term economic changes, and other changes not associated with local population changes.

Concentrations of\r\nselected herbicides also were defined. Reelfoot\r\nLake, with a sur$ace area of about 15,500 acres,\r\nis the largest natural lake in Tennessee and an\r\nimportant recreation and fisheries resource.\r\nPrevious studies showed that the lake is\r\nhypereutrophic, a condition caused by high\r\nconcentrations of nutrients in water and sediments\r\ndischarged from the three principal tributaries\r\n(South Reelfoot Creek, North Reelfoot Creek, and\r\nRunning Slough) to the lake. Pesticides, including\r\nherbicides, have been detected in the lake?s\r\nbottom sediments.\r\nStorm runoff contributed about 87percent of\r\nthe total water discharge of the three main\r\ntributaries to Reelfoot Lake. South Reelfoot\r\nCreek contributed about 4.7 tons per acre per year\r\nof suspended sediment, while North Reelfoot\r\nCreek contributed about 1.9 tons per acre per\r\nyear. Running Slough contributed only about\r\n0.31 ton per acre per year of suspended sediment.\r\nMost of the suspended sediment was transported\r\nby storm runoff between October and March.\r\nAbout 80 percent of the annual streamflow of the\r\nthree tributaries occurs during these months.\r\nThe North Reelfoot Creek basin contributed\r\n8.2 pounds per acre per year of total nitrogen and\r\n2.4 pounds per acre per year of total phosphorus.\r\nSouth Reelfoot Creek basin contributed about 6.5\r\nand 1.3 pounds per acre per year of total nitrogen\r\nand phosphorus, respectively, while Running\r\nSlough basin contributions were 3.4 and\r\n0.86 pounds per acre per year, respectively. The\r\ndifferences in nutrient yields appear to result from\r\nmore row-crop agriculture and the relatively steeply\r\nsloping agricultural land in the North Reelfoot\r\nCreek basin. Ninety-one percent of the total\r\nnitrogen load and 95 percent of the total\r\nphosphorus load in the three streams was\r\ntransported by storm runof/ Significant diflerences\r\nin the mean concentrations of nutrients in\r\nrunoff were defined between the active agricultural\r\nmonths (April through September) and the\r\ninactive months (October through March).\r\nStorm-runofS samples were analyzed for\r\nII selected triazine herbicides. Alachlor and\r\natrazine were the most commonly detected\r\nherbicides. Thirty-two percent of the samples\r\ncontained detectable levels of alachlor and\r\n93 percent of the samples contained detectable\r\nlevels of atrazine. Ninety percent of the samples\r\ncollected during the active agricultural months contained detectable leveki of alachlor and all\r\n29 samples contained detectable levels of atrazine.\r\nSixteen samples exceeded lifetime health-advisory\r\nlevels for atrazine in drinking water (3 micrograms\r\nper liter); two samples collected from the April IS,\r\n1988, storm at North Reelfoot Creek and South\r\nReelfoot Creek contained 42 and 57 micrograms\r\nper liter of atrazine, respectively.
