The U.S. Geological Survey began stratigraphic and structural studies in the southern half of the Koyukuk Cretaceous basin in 1954. During June 1954, the Shaktolik River was traversed by boat from near the confluence of Brass Pan Creek to Norton Sound. All cutback exposures along the river were examined and, in addition, some of the outcrops in the hills between the lower Shaktolik and lower Ungalik rivers were visited.

Grant and Ptarmigan Lakes can be made readily accessible by roads from the Seward-Anchorage Highway which in this area practically parallels the Alaska Railroad; and Cooper and Crescent Lakes by access roads from the Sterling Highway.
Geologic conditions are favorable for the construction of the various elements of a power development although some special problems may be encountered.
The power sites are located in areas of severe winter temperatures, -30° to -40° or less in most winters. This climatic feature must be given due consideration in the design of the various structures required for a power development.
Streamflow records are available for a 7-year period for Grant and Ptarmigan Creeks and for a 5-year period for Cooper and Crescent Creeks. Only short and incomplete records of precipitation are available in the area of the power sites but records have been kept at Seward for 30 years. The precipitation at Seward during the periods for which streamflow records are available was, in general, less than average. It seems reasonable that similar conditions would prevail over the upper Kenai Basin. Consequently, the available stream-flow records cover a period of less than average precipitation and estimates of potential power based on these figures probably are on the conservative side. Only regulated flow is considered in this report.
Each of the four lakes is a favorable storage site. Adequate capacity for complete regulation of the flow on a year-to-year basis or over a period of several years can be obtained by the construction of dams ranging in height from 20 to 50 feet. Water from the reservoirs can be conveyed to the powerhouses through conduits, tunnels, or pipelines of reasonable length.
The total estimated potential power for the four lakes is 11,000 kilowatts for 90 percent of the time and 14,000 kilowatts for 50 percent of the time.
Transmission line distances to Seward range from 22 miles for the Ptarmigan Lake power site to as much as 50 miles for the Cooper Lake power site that would be located on the Kenai River. The transmission line distance to Anchorage will approximate 100 miles, depending on the route selected.

It was conducted to aid, if possible, a prospecting project of the Defense Minerals Exploration. Samples were collected from soil and decomposed limestone-and-schist bedrock at depths ranging from 18 inches to 60 inches, by means of a pipe with an interior plunger.
Initial sampling was followed by detailed sampling of the areas where the antimony content of the soils consistently averaged more than 300 ppm. These Areas of major soil concentrations were prospected by surface trenching and percussion drilling to depths of 20 feet which proved the existence of stibnite ore. Next a shaft and drifts made in the most favorable area proved disseminated stibnite ore to depths of 60 feet.
This geochemical work of soil sampling to indicate hidden ore bodies in a typical Alaskan muskeg area is believed to be the first application in Alaska of such techniques in active ore exploration. The results show the economic feasibility of such exploration as a first step in extending the known boundaries of mineralized areas, and in directing initial exploration toward the most favorable areas of near-surface ore bodies.
Data are presented to help establish values of soil content of antimony that may be considered as normal in this type of geologic terrain.

the head of Glacier Bay between Reid and Lamplugh glaciers.
The dominant rock type in the area is granodiorite which is intruded into bedded rocks that may be of Paleozoic age. The bedded rocks consist of conglomerate, limestone, and black graphitic schist. A light-colored quartz diorite younger than the granodiorite crops out south of the mapped area.
Most of the ore deposits are found in fissure type quartz veins. These occur in both the granodiorite and in the older bedded rocks. The mineralizing solutions which brought in the gold have altered the country rock for as much as a few tens of feet to each side of the fissures. Locally, this altered rock is gold-bearing, but in the places sampled the gold content was found to be too low to permit profitable mining.
Most of the quartz veins tend to be lenticular, both horizontally and vertically, and the gold tends to be concentrated in discrete spots along the veins. These factors tend to make the ore spotty and its location unpredictable. This has given rise to the concept that the ore in the area has a tendency not to continue below the surface. Geologically there appears to be no reason to believe that gold mineralization is confined to surface outcrop.
The Leroy and Rainbow properties are the only two that have yielded significant quantities of gold within the mapped area, but the veins on the Highland Chief and probably the Rambler claims appear to be of sufficient size and grade to be potential ore producers.
The LeRoy mine is the largest in the area. The ore body consisted of a fissure type quartz vein averaging between 2 and 3 feet in width with a length of about 60 feet, but in 1954, all of the ore in the main vein had been mined out above the main working level. Ore probably amounting to several hundreds of tons was mined and milled from the Rainbow vein.
The results of an investigation of a mineralized area near Lituya Bay is included in this report. The mineralized material consists of hydrothermally altered rock found in volcanic rocks believed to be of Mesozoic age. The gold content is too low to permit profitable mining, although it is possible that undiscovered spots exist in which the gold concentration is sufficiently high to be of economic significance.
Dam sites were examined at the outlets of Scenery Lake, Swan Lake, and Ruth Lake which are located on Scenery Creek, Cascade Creek, and Delta Creek, respectively. The Scenery Lake dam site is partly in quartz diorite and partly in hornblende plagioclase gneiss. The Swan Lake and Ruth Lake dam sites are in quartz diorite. The bedrock at these dam sites is suitable for the height of dams that would be required to achieve the full development of the potential power of the streams. No appreciable leakage from the reservoirs is anticipated.
Tentative tunnel routes for conveying the water from the lakes to powerhouse sites at or near tidewater were examined. The tunnel routes from Scenery Lake and Swan Lake would be in quartz diorite. The tunnel route from Ruth Lake would pass through quartz diorite and diorite gneiss.
The geologic examinations described in this report indicate that the development of the potential power of the streams under consideration is feasible as far as geologic conditions are concerned.

It is on the west side of Latouche Island about two miles southwest of the old mining camp of Latouche. Pyrite deposits crop out about one-half mile from the head of the bay (see fig. 1) and in the lower part of a broad basin-like valley at altitudes between 125 feet and 650 feet. The valley, which is a mile wide and two miles long, is open to the see on the northwest side and is bordered on the northeast, southeast and southwest by a high sharp-crested ridge that reaches a maximum altitude of 2,255 feet. The area can easily be reached by chartered small boat or float plane from Cordova or other towns in this part of Alaska. The property at Horseshoe Bay has been idle and deserted since November of 1916 and all of the surface improvements are ruins.

The deposit which comprises several pegmatite bodies consists of quartz, albite-oligoclase, microcline and mica, listed in the order of their relative abundance. Feldspar and quartz crystals locally attain a length of more than 1 foot. Some muscovite mica up to 2 inches in diameter occurs, but the major part of the mica is contained in concentrations, containing mica flakes one-half inch across, that often are as large as 10 feet across. Ruby mica of strategic grade has been obtained from float from this deposit.
None of the rarer minerals such as beryl, columbite-tantalite or cassiterite that often occur in pegmatites were observed in the preliminary examination; and small-size concentrate samples obtained by panning stream sands from the area did not contain recognizable amounts of these rarer minerals. One sample contained a few grains identified as cassiterite. No radioactive anomalies were detected in the pegmatites, or in the stream concentrates.
The large tonnage of material available arid the favorable location by a good anchorage on an ocean route are favorable factors that should contribute to the development of the deposits. Other deposits of comparable size probably occur in the area.

The five Eskimo villages--Kwethluk, Hooper Bay, Chevak, Tununak, and Kwigillingok--are in western Alaska between the lower reaches of the two rivers. (See sketch page two). As there has been no development of ground water in the area, this report is based on a brief investigation of the surficial geology and the topography.

The work, started in 1946, is a continuation of the geologic mapping done in the adjoining Chichagof mining district by Reed and Coats. The gold-bearing zone recognized by these writers continues through the area mapped by the writer to the northern shore of Chichagof Island.
Stratified rocks ranging in age from Paleozoic through Early Cretaceous were intruded by gabbro, quartz diorite, norite-gabbro, and by younger quartz diorite.
The igneous rocks from oldest to youngest are: gabbro, diorite, quartz diorite, the rocks associated with the nickel deposits, which include gabbro-norite and quartz diorite, and basalt. The diorite is believed to have been formed during Early Cretaceous time, and the gabbro is older by an unknown amount. The gabbro and diorite are believed to be, over large areas, recrystallized older rock. The oldest group of quartz diorite intrusives in places cuts the diorite and is therefore younger. The quartz diorite is minerally somewhat foliated and slightly metamorphosed.
The igneous rocks associated with the nickel deposits are the youngest of the major igneous rock groups. They intruded the Cretaceous graywacke after it had been folded to essentially its present position.
Gold is the most economically important mineral commodity mined to date. The Apex and El Nido are the two largest mines in the area, but some gold has been recovered from the Goldwin and Cobol properties and small amounts from some other small prospects. In addition to gold the area includes nickel-bearing deposits at Mirror Harbor on Chichagof Island and at Bohemia Basin on Yakobi Island. Copper mineralization occurs in the area north of Goulding Harbor.
An attempt has been made to outline areas favorable for prospecting based on the regional geology and, on the number and kind of quartz veins found. In general the best area for prospecting appears to be on a northwest-trending zone which extends from the head Pinta Bay to the northern end of Althorp Peninsula.
