The surficial and intermediate aquifer systems and the Upper Floridan aquifer of the Floridan aquifer system contain six separate aquifers, or permeable zones, and have a total thickness of about 2,000 feet. Water in the clastic surficial aquifer system is potable and is tapped by hundreds of shallow, low-yielding supply wells. Water in the mixed clastic and carbonate intermediate aquifer system is potable in the upper part, but in the lower part, because of increasing salinity, it is used primarily for reverse-osmosis desalinization feed water and irrigation. Within the Upper Floridan aquifer, limestone and dolomite of the Suwannee permeable zone are tapped by irrigation and reverse-osmosis supply wells. The underlying, less permeable limestone of the Suwannee-Ocala semiconfining unit generally encompasses the transition zone between freshwater and very saline water. Interbedded limestone and dolomite of the Ocala-Avon Park moderately permeable zone and Avon Park highly permeable zone compose the deep, very saline injection zone. Potential ground-water contamination problems include flooding by storm tides, upward movement of saline water toward pumping centers by natural and induced leakage or through improperly constructed and abandoned wells, and lateral and vertical movement of treated sewage and reverse-osmosis wastewater injected into deep zones. Effects of flooding are evident in coastal areas where vertical layering of fresh and saline waters is observed. Approximately 100 uncontrolled flowing artesian wells that have interaquifer flow rates as high as 350 gallons per minute have been located and scheduled for plugging by the Southwest Florida Water Management District--in an attempt to improve ground-water quality of the shallow aquifers. Because each aquifer or permeable zone has unique head and water-quality characteristics, construction of single-zone wells would eliminate cross-contamination and borehole interflow. Such a program, when combined with the plugging of shallow-cased wells having long open-hole intervals connecting multiple zones, would safeguard ground-water resources in the study area. The study area encompasses seven wastewater injection sites that have a projected capacity for injecting 29 million gallons per day into the zone 1,100 to 2,050 feet below land surface. There are six additional sites within 20 miles. The first well began injecting reverse-osmosis wastewater in 1984, and since then, other wells have been drilled and permitted for injection of treated sewage. A numerical model was used to evaluate injection-well design and potential for movement of injected wastewater within the hydrogeologic framework. The numerical model was used to simulate injection through a representative well at a rate of 1 million gallons per day for 10 years. In this simulation, a convection cell developed around the injection well with the buoyant fresh injectant rising to form a lens within the injection zone below the lower Suwannee-Ocala semiconfining unit. Around an ideal, fully penetrating well cased 50 feet into the injection zone and open from a depth of 1,150 feet to 2,050 feet, simulations show that the injectant moves upward to a depth of 940 feet, forms a lens about 600 feet thick, and spreads radially outward to a distance of about 2,300 feet after 10 years. Comparison simulations of injection through wells having open depth intervals of 1,150 to 1,400 feet and 1,450 to 2,050 feet demonstrate that such changes in well construction have little effect on the areal spread of the injectant lens or the rate of upward movement.

Volcanoes killed more people (over 28,500) in the 1980's than during the 78 years following 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee (Martinique). Not surprisingly, volcanic phenomena and attendant hazards received attention from government authorities, the news media, and the general public. As part of this enhanced global awareness of volcanic hazards, the U.S. Geological Survey (Bailey and others, 1983) in response to the eruptions or volcanic unrest during the 1980's at Mount St. Helens and Redoubt are still erupting intermittently, and the caldera unrest at Long Valley also continues, albeit less energetically than during the early 1980's.
The Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with State and Federal agencies, obtains a large amount of data pertaining to the water resources of Alabama each water year. These data, accumulated during many water years, constitute a valuable data base for developing an improved understanding of the water resources of the State. To make these data readily available to interested parties outside the Geological Survey, the data are published annually in this report series entitled \"Water Resources Data - Alabama.\"

The interaction between the river and ground water was quantified as streamflow gains from and losses to the aquifers. Upstream from Milner, Idaho, the Snake River both gains and loses water. Some reaches gain or lose throughout the year; other reaches gain during the irrigation season when ground-water levels rise as a result of application of surface water for irrigation but lose during the rest of the year. The largest continuous streamflow gain upstream from Milner is from springs between Blackfoot and Neeley, where, in 1980, the Snake River gained 1.9 million acre-feet of ground water. Downstream from Milner, the Snake River is a gaining stream. Gains arc largest between Milner and King Hill where numerous springs discharge to the river. In 1980, the Snake River gained 4.7 million acre-feet of ground water between Milner and King Hill.
Although large springs were present in the Blackfoot-to-Neeley and Milner-to-King Hill reaches before irrigation began on the plain, the application of surface water for irrigation increased recharge to the Snake River Plain aquifer; therefore, spring discharge to both reaches also increased. However, despite changes in irrigated acreage and corresponding changes in the amount of water potentially available for recharge, spring discharge between Blackfoot and Neeley has remained relatively stable for 69 years (1912-80). During the same period, discharge from individual springs and total ground-water discharge between Milner and King Hill have increased and decreased substantially in quantities that can be attributed to changes in irrigation.
The changes in ground-water recharge and discharge and ground-water storage generally are the net result of 100 successive years of irrigation on the Snake River Plain. Water-budget analyses indicate that the total volume of ground water in storage in the main part of the eastern Snake River Plain increased about 24 million acre-feet from 1880 to 1952, largely as a result of increased recharge in areas irrigated with surface water. The total volume of ground water in storage decreased about 6 million acre-feet from 1952 to 1980 as a result of several years of below-normal precipitation, increased pumping of ground water for irrigation, and other changes in irrigation practices. Ground-water storage in parts of the western plain increased about 3 million acre-feet from 1930 to 1972 but generally has decreased since 1972.

Water samples from each of these lakes and Bear Lake, which is not adjacent to tribal land, were analyzed for water-quality indicators. Lakelevel fluctuations also were measured for each lake except Big Round Lake. Grain-size and chemical analyses were done on lake-sediment samples from Bashaw, Rice, Clam, Gaslyn, and Bear Lakes. Ground-water samples from wells on or near tribal land in Burnett County (27 wells) and Polk County (3 wells) were collected and analyzed for water quality.

The bedrock aquifers include the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer system, the Silurian-Devonian aquifer, the Mississippian aquifer, localized Pennsylvanian aquifers, and the Dakota aquifer. The surficial aquifers can be divided into three types: (1) buried channel, (2) alluvial, and (3) glacial drift. Information about the location, date of construction, and depth of each well, and the year water-level measurements began are provided for wells completed in each aquifer.
\nThe objectives of the ground-water-level monitoring network in Iowa are to provide the data needed to: (1) determine the change in aquifer storage, (2) document the effects of climatic stress and human activities on discharge and recharge to the principal aquifers, (3) quantify the physical characteristics of ground-water flow including the transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and specific capacity of aquifers; and (4) provide historical baseline data for future research. The design of the ground-water-level monitoring network in Iowa that satisfies these objectives includes three types of data: (1) hydrologic data, (2) water-management data for use by State and local officials, and (3) baseline data.
