Ground-water sources supply 6 percent of the total water used in Pennsylvania. Of the ground water used in 1984,55 percent was for industry, 23 percent for public supply, 15 percent for rural domestic supplies, 5 percent for livestock, and 2 percent for irrigation. Public supplies provide ground water to about 2,180,000 people, and rural self-supplied systems provide ground water to about 3,000,000 people.&nbsp; The major issues related to ground water in Pennsylvania are: Adequacy of supplies, Contamination by hazardous wastes, and Effects of coal mining, oil and gas production, and agriculture.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Water resources clearinghouse activities of the USGS are conducted through several separate computerized water information programs that are involved in the collection, storage, retrieval, and distribution of different types of water information. The following USGS programs perform water information clearinghouse functions and provide the framework for a formalized National Water-Information Clearinghouse: (1) The National Water Data Exchange--a nationwide confederation of more than 300 Federal, State, local, government, academic, and private water-oriented organizations that work together to improve access to water data; (2) the Water Resources Scientific Information Center--acquires, abstracts, and indexes the major water-resources-related literature of the world, and provides this information to the water resources community; (3) the Information Transfer Program--develops innovative approaches to transfer information and technology developed within the USGS to audiences in the public and private sectors; (4) the Hydrologic Information Unit--provides responses to a variety of requests, both technical and lay-oriented, for water resources information , and helps efforts to conduct water resources research; (5) the Water Data Storage and Retrieval System--maintains accessible computerized files of hydrologic data collected nationwide, by the USGS and other governmental agencies, from stream gaging stations, groundwater observation wells, and surface- and groundwater quality sampling sites; (6) the Office of Water Data Coordination--coordinate the water data acquisition activities of all agencies of the Federal Government, and is responsible for the planning, design, and inter-agency coordination of a national water data and information network; and (7) the Water Resources Research Institute Program--coordinates and evaluates activities performed by a variety of groundwater contamination studies ranging from field investigations to analysis of socioeconomic issues. About 73 percent of the ground water withdrawn is used for irrigation, about 17 percent for public supply, and about 7 percent for industrial, rural domestic, and livestock uses. About 8 million people, or 48 percent of the population of Texas, depend on ground water as a public or rural domestic supply. The dependence on ground water is greatest in the arid northwestern part of the State, where most of the water is used for irrigation. This area contains 70 percent of all irrigated land in Texas, and uses about 85 percent of the total ground water withdrawn for irrigation. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Water quality samples of storm runoff at the drainage well at Clarksville Memorial Hospital and of nearby Mobley Spring were collected during four storms and during normal flow conditions during February and March 1988. Samples were analyzed for major inorganic water quality constituents, selected trace metals, and organics. Several samples from the drainage well and the spring had trace-metals concentrations that exceeded maximum contaminant levels for State drinking-water standards. Organic compounds including phenols, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and other base-neutral extractable organic substance are present in samples from both the drainage well and spring. The measurements were made in midwinter when pumping was minimal and water levels had recovered, for the most part, from the effects of pumping during the previous irrigation season. Annual hydrologic data are provided for relating water level changes from a ' base year ' (predevelopment), a reference year of abnormally large amounts of rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974), and each of 7 consecutive years of measurement (1982-88). The ' base year ' is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern, west central, and Equus beds areas. Data also are provided for relating the mean annual water level changes, saturated thicknesses of the water-bearing deposits, and percentage changes in saturated thickness. Groundwater levels measured in about 1,360 wells completed in the High Plains aquifer of western and south-central Kansas had a mean net decline of 0.1 ft during 1987 compared to a 0.6 ft mean decline during 1986. These sites, located in Haywood, Shelby, and Lake Counties, are all areas of high intensity agriculture. Because of the importance of the surficial alluvial aquifer to the domestic supply in West Tennessee, shallow wells at each site were sampled. Two sampling events were scheduled, in the winter and in the spring, to establish the difference between background and effected contaminant levels. Preliminary results from the first sampling event indicate a range of nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen concentrations from less than 0.1 to 7.8 milligrams per liter. The results from triazine analyses show concentrations below the detection limit.
