This report is based on a brief examination of a locality on the Beluga River, about 50 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska (fig. 1), that had been reported to contain a coal bed of exceptional thickness and quality, possibly suitable for large-scale strip mining. I visited the locality on August 21-22, 1954, accompanied by Mike Goggans, of Anchorage, who volunteered to guide me to the locality, and by Joe Schneller, of the Two Joe Fish Co. on the Beluga River, who furnished a boat and outboard motors and served as boatman. I wish to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of both men in making the trip possible and in assisting in the field work.

In the past few years increasing use has been made of aerial photographs for geologic interpretation and mapping within the U.S. Geological Survey. As a specialized technique in interpretation and mapping, however, photogeologic procedures were extensively used (1947-1953) in the Survey's geologic mapping of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 in northern Alaska and in mapping part of the Colorado Plateau of western United States, principally in Utah (1951-present). Photogeologic work was performed by a specialized group of geologists that was organized as the Photogeology Section in June 1953. This group has more recently made studies of northeastern Utah, southern and southeastern Alaska, and central Alaska. Various photogeologic procedures have been used in these studies; some procedures have been modified, and new ones have been developed. It is primarily the purpose of this paper to discuss these procedures. Photogeologic procedures or techniques used outside the Geological Survey are not discussed herein.

Alaska","docAbstract":"Diatomaceous earth occurs in post-glacial lake deposits exposed along the shore of Cook Inlet north of the village of Kenai, Alaska. Diatomaceous earth is an unconsolidated earthy deposit formed by accumulation of the minute siliceous tests (skeletons) of diatoms, a type of algae. Diatomaceous earth is sometimes referred to as diatomite.
The largest and purest of these deposits was mapped and sampled in detail. The diatomaceous earth attains a maximum thickness of 12 feet, with the dried material averaging between 65 and 75 percent diatoms by weight.
The deposit mapped contains about 200,000 cubic yards of diatomaceous earth which is readily accessible, and is favorably situated with regard to transportation by sea and road.

It is 37 miles by highway north of Homer and 51 miles south of Kenai, the two principal towns of the region (fig. 1). The localities studied are in sections 2, 3, 10, and 11, T. 2 S., R. 14 W. (Seward meridian), south and west of Deep Creek within 2 miles of its mouth, and were easily reached by cutting about a mile of tractor trail from a dirt road connecting with the Sterling Highway (pl. 1). This area was chosen for detailed study because geologic mapping had indicated the presence of at least one coal bed of minable thickness and quality that appeared to be favorably situated for strip mining and was reasonably accessible to the highway.
This report presents the results of drilling and trenching with a bulldozer and power-auger unit in areas along Deep Creek that had been mapped by Cobb (1952) and briefly examined by Barnes in 1953. The reader is referred to Cobb's report for a general description of the geology and coal resources of the Homer district, of which this area is a part. These earlier investigations showed that the coal-bearing Kenai formation, of Tertiary age, is generally covered by Quaternary glacial and stream deposits, except in steep bluffs and parts of the creek bed, so that subsurface data were needed to supplement the surface data in evaluating the coal reserves.
The field work for this report was done in the period August 130, 1954, by the writers, assisted by A. E. Burford and W. S. Hopkins, geologists, and J. W. Dawson, operator-mechanic. It involved the use of a small crawler tractor, equipped with a 4-1/2 inch power auger for boring through the overburden to test concealed coal beds, and with a bulldozer for building access roads and opening cuts and trenches to permit direct observation and measurement of the coal at favorable localities. A more detailed description of the equipment and its use is given elsewhere (Barnes and Sokol, 1955). Work was done at two localities on Deep Creek, about 1 mile and 1-1/2 miles, respectively, above the highway bridge. These areas were mapped topographically and tied in with the land net by plane-table surveys.

They were reported by field parties of the U.S. Geological Survey during the mapping of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 and adjacent areas. The deposits are sedimentary in origin and are confined to a thin zone in the Lisburne group of Mississippian age. Six of the localities are in a narrow belt along the north front of the Brooks gang between the Anaktuvuk and Okokmilaga rivers. The seventh is near the Ipnavik River about 100 miles northwest of the Okokmilaga River. At all but two of these localities the zone of soft phosphatic rocks does not crop out extensively and samples of phosphate rock were collected chiefly from float or talus. Little or nothing is known about the thickness and extent of the deposits. Near Chandler Lake on the upper Kiruktagiak River and 11 miles west of at the head of Tiglukpuk Creek, the phosphatic zone is well-exposed. This paper is a preliminary report on the results of a detailed examination of the phosphatic zone in these two areas during the summer of 1953.

geologic investigation of the Chena area east of Fairbanks. The work was done by the Geological Survey in 1950. One important objective of the study was to consider some of the geologic problems affecting development of the land for commercial and agricultural use -- especially to outline the parts of the area that are subject to possible ground subsidence and differential settling because of melting of ground ice masses in permafrost following clearing of the land for agriculture and for construction.

\nDuring the period the Geological Survey's program has been\ndirected to an increasing extent toward the understanding of geologic conditions favorable for the concentration of uranium, rather than the search for minable deposits as such. This shift in emphasis\nis reflected in the decreased amount of exploration drilling during\nthe period, and the accompanying increase in geologic programs of a\nlong-range nature.
\nThe program is now directed toward a comprehensive understanding\nof the many factors involved in uranium geology, and the publication\nof reports that will make available information on all phases of the\nuranium program. Many investigations have progressed to the point\nwhere final reports are in preparation for future publication with the\npermission of the Atomic Energy Commission; for other investigations of\na continuing nature it will be several years before final reports can\nbe prepared. Formal publications (as distinguished from administrative\nTrace Elements Reports) published during the period include 10 Geological\nSurvey Bulletins or Bulletin Chapters; 116 Geological Survey maps; 15\nreports published in scientific journals; seven Trace Elements Reports\nsent to the Technical Information Service of the Atomic Energy Commission\nfor distribution and sale to the public; and four Trace Elements\nreports placed on open file. In addition, a large number •of papers by\ngeologists in the program were presented before scientific societies,\nand the 61 papers prepared for the United Nations International Conference\n.on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy during the preceding report\nperiod were published by the United Nations.

The silt is probably loess deposited during glacial advances by south winds blowing from the glaciated Alaska Range across outwash plains in the Tanana Valley.
In the Fairbanks area, where it is best exposed, the upland silt is 1–80 feet thick on tops of low hills, 50–150 feet above the valley floor. It is 10–100 feet thick on middle slopes of higher hills and thins to a few feet on the higher slopes of ridges 800–2000 feet above the valley. Much silt has been reworked and moved by stream erosion into valley bottoms where it forms a fill 10–300 feet thick.
The upland silt is well sorted. The texture and mineral composition are uniform throughout the Yukon-Tanana upland, whether the silt overlies schist, chert, granite or basalt. The silt stands in sheer cliffs and is massive, showing little or no stratification.
During the
past 50 years, fluviatile, marine, estuarine, lacustrine, residual, and eolian hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin of the upland silt. The fluviatile marine and estuarine hypotheses never had strong support, but the lacustrine concept was popular in the early part of the century.
Most of the upland silt is considered to be wind blown, derived from glacial outwash because: (1) it occurs as a surficial mantle (2) it is lithologically independent of the underlying material, (3) stratification is indistinct or absent, (4) it is associated with sand dunes and ventifacts, (5) it contains fossils of air-breathing land animals, (6) the sorting and texture are similar to upper Mississippi Valley loess and wind-blown dust, (7) the grains are angular and relatively fresh, and (8) loess is being deposited in the region today.

No significant lode deposits of radioactive materials were found. However, the placer uranothorianite in the headwaters of the Peace River yet remains as an important lead to bedrock radioactive source materials in Alaska. Tundra cover prevents satisfactory radiometric reconnaissance of the area, and methods of geochemical prospecting such as soil and vegetation sampling may ultimately prove more fruitful in the search for the uranothorianite-sulfide lode source than geophysical methods.

Detailed exploration with a bulldozer and power auger was done at these localities in 1953 and 1954 with special attention to strip-mining possibilities.
All the beds examined at the four localities tested were judged to be either too thin or too dirty to be minable under present conditions, and none of them are favorably situated for strip mining.

The deposits are pyrometasomatic in origin and are localized along northeast-trending fractures. The eastern deposit is a low-grade disseminated deposit occurring in hornfels. The western deposit occurs as a massive lens of magnetite and garnet with a marble hanging wall and a hornfels footwall. The tenor of mineral rock in the western deposit may average 75 percent of magnetite. The deposit is lenticular and can be followed along strike for 55 feet in outcrop and, where concealed beneath a cover of soil and vegetation, can be followed for an additional 55 feet with a dip needle. Where exposed in a sea cliff the deposit is 30 to 35 feet thick.
