The basin is parallel to Lake Ontario and extends from Rochester in the west to Oswego in the east. Aquifers consisting primarily of sand and gravel formed where meltwaters from glaciers deposited kame and outwash sand and gravel and where wave action along shores of glacial lakes eroded, reworked , and deposited beaches. Thick deposits of well-sorted sand and gravel yield relatively large quantities of water - typically more than 100 gal/min. Aquifers consisting of thin beds of sand and (or) gravel or thick gravel that contain a large proportion of silt and fine sand yield moderate amounts of water, 10 to 100 gal/min. Dug and driven wells that tap fine to medium sand deposits typically yield 1 to 10 gal/min. The Minnelusa Formation outcrops in the western part of the map area and is more than 3 ,600 ft below land surface in the northeastern corner of the area. The formation consists of interbedded sandstone, sandy dolomite and limestone, shale, siltstone, gypsum, and anhydrite. The upper beds are an aquifer and the lower beds are a confining or semi-confining unit. Small anticlines and synclines parallel the Minnelusa outcrop. Domal structures and peaks in the study area are the result of Tertiary-age intrusions. The altitude of the top of the tunnel is planned to be approximately at sea level. The ACOE would like to have a minimum of 40 ft of bedrock above the top of the tunnel for construction and engineering purposes. The results of the study show that the bedrock ranges in altitude from 40 to 140 ft above sea level, and that there is a northeast trending bedrock valley that overlies the proposed tunnel alignment. An east-west fault zone terminates the Gallatin Range at its southern end and extends from Hebgen Lake, west of the park, to Norris Basin. \r\n\r\nNo local evidence exists at the surface in Norris Basin for the two oldest Yellowstone volcanic caldera cycles (~2.0 and 1.3 m.y.B.P.). The third and youngest cycle formed the Yellowstone caldera, which erupted the 600,000-year-old Lava Creek Tuff. No evidence is preserved of hydrothermal activity near Norris Basin during the first 300,000.years after the caldera collapse. Glaciation probably removed most of the early evidence, but erratics of hot-spring sinter that had been converted diagenetically to extremely hard, resistant chalcedonic sinter are present as cobbles in and on some moraines and till from the last two glacial stages, here correlated with the early and late stages of the Pinedale glaciation <150,000 years B.P.). \r\n\r\nIndirect evidence for the oldest hydrothermal system at Norris Basin indicates an age probably older than both stages of Pinedale glaciation. Stream deposits consisting mainly of rounded quartz phenocrysts of the Lava Creek Tuff were subaerial, perhaps in part windblown and redeposited by streams. A few small rounded pebbles are interpreted as chalcedonic sinter of a still older cycle. None of these are precisely dated but are unlikely to be more than 150,000 to 200,000 years old.\r\n\r\n...Most studies of active hydrothermal areas have noted chemical differences in fluids and alteration products but have given little attention to differences and models to explain evolution in types. This report, in contrast, emphasizes the kinds of changes in vents and their changing chemical types of waters and then provides models for explaining these differences.\r\n\r\nNorris Basin is probably not an independent volcanic-hydrothermal system. The basin and nearby acid-leached areas (from oxidation of H2S-enriched vapor) are best considered as parts of the same system, extending from Norris Basin to Roaring Mountain and possibly to Mammoth. If so, are they parts of a single large system centered within the Yellowstone caldera, or are Norris Basin and the nearby altered areas both parts of one or more young independent corridor systems confined, at least in the shallow crust, to the Norris-Mammoth Corridor? Tentatively, we favor the latter relation, probably having evolved in the past ~300,000 years.\r\n\r\nA model for large, long-lived, volcanic-hydrothermal activity is also suggested, involving all of the crust and upper mantle and using much recent geophysical data bearing on crust-mantle interrelations. It also delineates segments of aquifers that are used for public water supplies and designated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as Primary Water Supply Aquifers. The map also lists published reports that give detailed information on each area. Most aquifers were deposited in low areas, such as valleys and plains, during deglaciation of the region. Thick, permeable, well-sorted sand and gravel units yield large quantities of water - more than 100 gal/min - to properly constructed wells. Thin sand units and sand and gravel units and thicker gravel units that have a large content of silt and fine sand yield moderate amounts of water, 10 to 100 gal/min. Dug wells that tap till or lacustrine deposits yield less than 5 gal/min. Well yields from bedrock are not indicated. It also delineates segments of aquifers that are heavily used by community water systems and designated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as ' Primary water supply ' aquifers and cites published reports that give detailed information on each area. Most aquifers were deposited in low-lying areas such as valleys or plains during deglaciation of the region. Thick, permeable, well-sorted sand and gravel deposits generally yield large quantities of water, more than 100 gal/min. Thin sand, sand and gravel deposits, or thicker gravel units that have a large content of silt and fine sand, yield moderate amounts of water, 10 to 100 gal/min. Wells dug in till and those drilled in bedrock commonly yield less than 10 gal/min. Bathymetric surveys during 1984-85 determined that, for the full-pool water surface elevation of 76.8 ft, the volume of Lake Marion is 1,425 ,000 acre-ft, and for the full-pool water surface elevation of 75.0 ft, the volume of Lake Moultrie is 1,060,000 acre-ft. These volumes are considered accurate to within 5%. Comparison with volumes determined in 1941, when the reservoirs were filled, shows decreased in volume of 73,000 acre-ft in Lake Marion and 30,000 acre-ft in Lake Moultrie. These changes in volume, however, are subject to relatively large possible error because they represent relatively small differences between relatively large volumes, and because the accuracy of the 1941 volumes is not known. Measurements of sediment inflow and outflow and of deposition rate suggest the volume losses were more likely about 29,000 acre-ft in Lake Marion and about 1,600 acre-ft in Lake Moultrie. The discrepancy in the estimate of volume changes does not affect the accuracy of the volume computation or the maps. These maps show generalized contours of the altitude of water levels in wells completed in the Jasper aquifer in central and southwestern Louisiana and in aquifers in stratigraphically equivalent deposits of southeastern Louisiana for 1984. Separate maps were prepared for the upper and lower units of the Jasper and equivalent aquifers to provide a better representation of water levels. Although these maps provide a regional picture of water levels in the Jasper aquifer, they do not show the local differences in water levels between individual sand beds that occur near pumping centers. Generally, water levels shown at pumping centers are for the most heavily pumped sand beds at those centers. Most water level measurements used in compiling these maps were made in 1984. Where measurements from 1984 were unavailable, earlier and later measurements were used in areas where evidence indicated little change had occurred and in areas where definite regional trends of water level change could be established. In the areas where trends were established, water levels were adjusted to 1984 values by applying corrections based on the trends. Other maps in the series show water levels in aquifers of Pleistocene age, the Evangeline and equivalent aquifers, and the Catahoula aquifer. The New Mexico State Engineer Office (NMSEO) and the U.S. Geological Survey collect and publish data on water use at 5-year intervals. These data are used by Federal and State agencies, city and county planners, private industry, and irrigation districts. </p><p>This report graphically summarizes water-use data by county in New Mexico in 1985. The primary source of data was the NMSEO Technical Report 46 (Wilson, 1986), which contains detailed water-use information. The data presented here are in the same format (categories of use and units) as the technical report. The Survey' s national data-collection format differs from the NMSEO format in some category definitions, quantity of data reported, and units. T</p><p>The State Engineer Office defines a withdrawal as the amount of water removed from a surface- or ground-water source. A depletion is that part of a withdrawal consumed by man or livestock, included in crops or products, evaporated or transpired, or otherwise removed. Water levels of seven selected observation wells have shown an overall gradual decrease in altitude ranging from about 5 to 10+ ft during the period of record. Three observation wells have shown some fluctuations but water levels have remained essentially unchanged overall, and two of the selected observation wells have shown a slight overall increase in water level altitude of 5 to 20 ft during the period of record.
