We present experimental results,based on AE observations, that show the nucleation and growth of macroscopic fault planes in granite and sandstone samples. By controlling axial stress to maintain constant AE rate rather than more conventional loading conditions such as constant strain rate or constant stress, we have been successful in retarding the failure process in triaxial experiments. As a result, the post-failure stress curve has been followed quasistatically, extending to minutes or hours the fault growth process that normally would occur violently in a fraction of a second. In addition to this novel control system, three-dimensional locations of AE events were determined by analyzing the relative arrival times of AE pulses recorded on a network of transducers attached to the sample. In this manner, as many as 40 000 AE events were located in the course of a single experiment.</p><p id=\"simple-para.0015\">While the details of fault formation varied from experiment to experiment, a number of features were consistently observed. In all three granite experiments, the fault plane nucleated abruptly at a point on the sample surface soon after reaching peak stress. Prior to fault nucleation, microcrack growth was distributed evenly throughout the granite samples. From the nucleation site, the fault plane grew across the sample, accompanied by a gradual drop in axial stress. AE locations showed that the fault propagated as a fracture front (process zone) with in-plane dimension of 10-50 mm. As the fracture front passed, the AE from a given region would drop to a low level. If allowed to progress to completion, stress eventually dropped to the frictional sliding strength. Sandstone samples showed somewhat different response. In these experiments, a diffuse damage zone appeared prior to peak strength and gradually localized into an incipient fault plane. After passing through peak stress, this plane grew, as in the granite samples, to eventually bisect the sample.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0074-6142(08)62813-2","usgsCitation":"Lockner, D.A., Byerlee, J., Kuksenko, V., Ponomarev, A., and Sidorin, A., 1992, Observations of quasistatic fault growth from acoustic emissions: International Geophysics, v. 51, p. 3-31, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0074-6142(08)62813-2.","productDescription":"29 p.","startPage":"3","endPage":"31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":416805,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"51","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lockner, David A. 0000-0001-8630-6833 dlockner@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8630-6833","contributorId":567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lockner","given":"David","email":"dlockner@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":234,"text":"Earthquake Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":871955,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Byerlee, J.D.","contributorId":69982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Byerlee","given":"J.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":871956,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kuksenko, V.","contributorId":15771,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kuksenko","given":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":871957,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ponomarev, A.","contributorId":70120,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ponomarev","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":871958,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Sidorin, A.","contributorId":106648,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sidorin","given":"A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":871959,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Distrinctive dark opal-CT and quartz chertz found in distal basins of the Monterey Formation are the result of burial diagenesis of pure biosiliceous oozes (biosiliceous oozes without significant admixtures of clay) and are therefore evidence of intensified coastal upwelling during the early middle Miocene. Dating of six sections of the Monterey Formation, largely by diatom biostratigraphy, suggests that at the Point Reyes and Point Año Nuevo sections in north-central California, the age of the earliest chert intervals is between 13.8 and 15.0 Ma, and 14.3 and 14.8 Ma, respectively. In south-central California, ages from the Shell Beach, Mussel Rock, and Lions Head sections imply that the age of the base of the chert intervals is between 12.7 and 13.3 Ma. Both ages correlate to an early middle Miocene high latitude cooling step that resulted in more vigorous surface water circulation, upwelling of nutrient-rich waters, and increased biosiliceous sedimentation in the North Pacific. The north-south difference in age of the base of the chert interval probably reflects a progressive intensification of the California Current from 15.0 to 12.7 Ma.</div><div>The age of the onset of biosiliceous sedimentation at DSDP sites of the northeastern Pacific is also generally younger at the more southern sites; however, these particular DSDP sites were located some distance from the centres of coastal upwelling and are not as reliable indicators of the intensification of upwelling along the California margin.</div>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Upwelling systems: Evolution Since the early Miocene","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of London","doi":"10.1144/GSL.SP.1992.064.01.28","usgsCitation":"White, L., Garrison, R.E., and Barron, J.A., 1992, Miocene intensification of upwelling along the California margin as recorded in siliceous facies of the Monterey Formation and offshore DSDP sites, chap. <i>of</i> Upwelling systems: Evolution Since the early Miocene: Special Papers of the Geological Society of London, v. 64, p. 429-442, https://doi.org/10.1144/GSL.SP.1992.064.01.28.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"429","endPage":"442","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":416704,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Pacific Ocean","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.19093386559643,\n              32.48418519973471\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.60837908792217,\n              32.58901431561772\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.97135886563308,\n              33.49558798292193\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.18212479948085,\n              34.37726962311825\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.05772080133403,\n              35.007559491009246\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.27409553329665,\n              35.55952731958149\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.29107699298334,\n              36.74449849031693\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.46494556932856,\n              37.967398417559906\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.40319365649935,\n              39.27704217811683\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.43132818423368,\n              39.816039165148396\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.89109249176676,\n              40.42159602811063\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.70713530197526,\n              41.264399740790594\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.80712709661253,\n              42.01846616014922\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.81259873418318,\n              42.01668342805516\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.00313345645952,\n              40.61277749989233\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.52827072761755,\n              38.710758187294545\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.54409829584716,\n              36.33708738297268\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.05130230851995,\n              34.50570405536621\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.15365128528586,\n              32.25977062759304\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.38733899388825,\n              32.428530126939094\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.19093386559643,\n              32.48418519973471\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1992-09-11","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Summerhayes, C. In continuous-flow toxicity tests conducted on the Millecoquins River, Michigan, TFM remained  selective for sea lamprey at the ambient stream pH and at an increased pH. At all but one concentration, TFM  killed all sea lampreys and none of the target fish. Selectivity decreased when the pH was lowered by  approximately 1 unit. TFM at the lowest tested concentration (2.3 mg/L) killed 100% of the sea lampreys, 50%  of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss ), and 40% of the fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas ). When  the Millecoquins River was treated at a concentration of 4.2 mg/L of TFM, all the caged sea lampreys were  killed at the ambient stream pH (8.35). Treated stream water that was diverted through stainless steel tanks  killed only 55% of the sea lampreys and none of the nontarget organisms when the pH was raised to 9.23. All of  the sea lampreys and nontarget organisms were killed when the pH of the treated water was lowered to 7.25.  These results indicate that diurnal changes in stream pH of approximately 1 pH unit can either cause TFM to  become toxic to nontarget organisms or render the treatment ineffective for killing sea lampreys.","language":"English","publisher":"Great Lakes Fishery Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Bills, T., and Johnson, D., 1992, Effect of pH on the toxicity of TFM to sea lamprey larvae and nontarget species during a stream treatment: Technical Report 57, pp. 7-19.","productDescription":"pp. 7-19","startPage":"7","endPage":"19","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":92001,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.glfc.org/pubs/TechReports/Tr57.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":198398,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db62553a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bills, T.D.","contributorId":6393,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bills","given":"T.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326566,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnson, D.A.","contributorId":61370,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"D.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":326567,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Concentrations of TFM gradually decreased over time, especially in  the presence of sediment and sunlight. The lampricide did not directly cause a reduction in dissolved oxygen  concentration, but appeared to inhibit photosynthetic production of oxygen during daylight. Dissolved oxygen  concentrations were significantly reduced by the presence of TFM in chambers exposed to sunlight.  Concentrations of total ammonia were significantly higher in chambers with sediment than in those without  sediment. In chambers that contained river water and were exposed to sunlight, ammonia concentrations were  low because of either oxidation by the elevated dissolved oxygen concentrations or the assimilation of nutrients  by algae. The observed changes in dissolved oxygen and ammonia because of the presence of TFM were subtle,  but statistically significant.","language":"English","publisher":"Great Lakes Fishery Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Dawson, V.K., Johnson, D., and Sullivan, J., 1992, Effects of the lampricide 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol on dissolved oxygen in aquatic systems: Technical Report 57, pp. 21-33.","productDescription":"pp. 21-33","startPage":"21","endPage":"33","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":92003,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.glfc.org/pubs/TechReports/Tr57.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":198397,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db610214","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dawson, V. Standard methods were adapted for  assessing the toxicity of candidate molluscicides to two nontarget bivalves. Fingernail clams, Musculium  transversum, and the fawnfoot mussel, Truncilla donaciformis, were selected to represent the two families of  native bivalves. Test organisms were collected from pools 6 to 9 of the Upper Mississippi River near La Crosse,  WI. Static acute toxicity tests were conducted for 48 hours followed by a 96-hour monitoring period in untreated  water to more fully assess survival and mortality. Toxicity data were analyzed by probit analysis to give LC  sub(50) values and 95% confidence limits. The same chemicals as those tested at Ohio State University were  evaluated against zebra mussels. Results from these studies and those conducted at Ohio State University will be  used to evaluate the effectiveness of chemicals in zebra mussel control and their potential hazard to nontarget  organisms.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Shellfish Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","issn":"00775711","usgsCitation":"Waller, D.L., Marking, L.L., and Rach, J., 1992, Evaluation of the effects of candidate molluscicides on two nontarget bivalves: Journal of Shellfish Research, v. 11, no. 1.","productDescription":"p. 241","startPage":"241","numberOfPages":"241","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":164722,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"11","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa3ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waller, D. The contents of the fishes' stomachs were examined to identify the species of prey. The seasonal availability of potential prey was determined from sampling with trawl tows.  Food electivity indexes for young-of-the-year (YOY) and older walleyes were calculated. In September and October YOY walleyes did not consume YOY white perch (Morone americana).  During October, they continued to eat YOY gizzard shads moderately but consumed mostly emerald shiners (Notropis atherinoides).  Older walleys were highly partial to YOY gizzard shads, emerald shiners, and smelts and consumed no YOY white perch.  The numbers of YOY yellow perch (Perca flavescens) in stomachs were limited.  Prey selection by walleyes in the central basin was species-specific irrespective of abundance of prey.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Wolfert, D.R., and Bur, M.T., 1992, Selection of prey by walleyes in the Ohio waters of the central basin of Lake Erie, 1985-1987: Resource Publication 182, 14 p.","productDescription":"14 p.","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198637,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4c20","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfert, David R.","contributorId":49305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfert","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325029,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bur, Michael T.","contributorId":102015,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bur","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325030,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
