The surface-water quality of the Cedar River basin was monitored from May 1984 through November 1985. Depth integrated surface-water samples generally were collected monthly at six stations for a considerable range of river discharge. Samples were analyzed for concentrations of common inorganic constituents in the dissolved phase and for concentrations of primary nutrients, trace elements, organic carbon, and herbicides in the dissolved and the dissolved plus suspended phases.</p>\n<p>Water in the Cedar River was determined to be a calcium bicarbonate type; suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 3 to 676 milligrams per liter. Concentrations of dissolved fluoride, dissolved nitrite plus nitrate, dissolved arsenic, dissolved lead, and dissolved mercury were less than those of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's drinking-water standards for public water supplies.</p>\n<p>Generally, herbicides were detected only in the dissolved phase, which indicates that herbicides are not being adsorbed on the suspended sediment. However, the lack of detection of adsorbed herbicides also may indicate a need for re-examination of traditionally acceptable methods of treating water samples at the sampling site, separating sediment and water, and extracting organic compounds from sediment. The largest concentrations of several dissolved herbicides were detected after application on agricultural areas in the spring and early summer in both wet and dry periods. However, dissolved atrazine concentrations also increased in the winter during periods of high streamflow resulting from snow melt. The maximum concentration of dissolved herbicides detected at all sampling sites during the study were: alachlor, 21 micrograms per liter; atrazine, 16 micrograms per liter; cyanazine, 8.7 micrograms per liter; metolachlor, 11.0 micrograms per liter; and metribuzin, 3.0 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>Herbicides can be transported from agricultural areas to the river by overland flow, drainage from agricultural areas conveyed by tile drains, and ground water. Hydrograph separation for 10 locations in the Cedar River basin indicates that the ground-water contribution varies within the basin and probably ranges from 56 to 80 percent of the annual river discharge. The predominance of ground-water contribution, the persistent detection of dissolved atrazine even during base flow, and the variety of dissolved herbicides detected in the river during the dry spring of 1985 indicate that some herbicides are being transported to the river by ground water. Atrazine transported to the Cedar River was estimated to be about 1.4 to 4.0 percent of that applied, depending on the assumed application rate. The large river discharge in June 1984, which was predominantly overland flow, contained about 70 percent of the atrazine transported to the river during 1984.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri884060","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the University of Iowa Hygienic The 11.4 sqare-mile area encompasses parts of Bethpage, Hicksville, Levittown, Plainview, Plainedge, and Farmingdale. </p><p>Approximately 1,200 ft of unconsolidated Cretaceous deposits and 50 to 100 ft of Pleistocene deposits overlie bedrock throughout the area. The unconsolidated deposits consist mostly of sand, gravel, silt, and clay and have good water-transmitting properties except where clay forms continuous layers that can impede groundwater flow. </p><p>The area is mostly residential and industrial. Pumpage for public supply exceeds 10 million gallons per day, most of which eventually discharges from the ground-water system to tidewater as sewage outflow. Industrial pumpage during summer exceeds 10 million gallons per day, but most of the water is returned to the system through recharge basins. Tidal bores are naturally occurring, tidally generated, solitary, moving water waves up to 6 meters in height that form upstream in estuaries with semidiurnal or nearly semidiurnal tide ranges exceeding 4 meters. Estuarine settings that have tidal bores typically include meandering fluvial systems with shallow gradients. Bores are well defined, having amplitudes greater than wind- or turbulence-caused waves, and may be undular or breaking. Formation of a bore is dependent on depth and velocity of the incoming tide and river outflow. Bores may occur in series (in several channels) or in succession (marking each tidal pulse). Tidal bores propagate up tidal estuaries a greater distance than the width of the estuary and most occur within 100 kilometers upstream of the estuary mouth. Because they are dynamic, bores cause difficulties in some shipping ports and are targets for eradication. \r\n\r\nTidal bores are known to occur, or to have occurred in the recent past, in at least 67 localities in 16 countries at all latitudes, including every continent except Antarctica. Parts of Argentina, Canada, Central America, China, Mozambique, Madagascar, Northern Europe, North and South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.S.R. probably have additional undiscovered or unreported tidal bores. \r\n\r\nIn Turnagain Arm estuary in Alaska, bores cause an abrupt increase in salinity, suspended sediment, surface character, and bottom pressure, a decrease in illumination of the water column, and a change in water temperature. Tidal bores occurring in Turnagain Arm, Alaska, have the","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/cir1022","usgsCitation":"Bartsch-Winkler, S., and Lynch, D.K., 1988, Catalog of worldwide tidal bore occurrences and characteristics: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1022, iii, 17 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir1022.","productDescription":"iii, 17 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138926,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1988/1022/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":31278,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1988/1022/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6f8d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartsch-Winkler, S.","contributorId":31388,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bartsch-Winkler","given":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148334,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lynch, David K.","contributorId":88600,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lynch","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":148335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced by the radioactive decay of uranium. Radon produced by uraniferous rocks and soils may enter a house through porous building materials and through openings in walls and floors. Radon gases has a tendency to move from the higher pressure commonly existing in the soil to the lower pressure commonly existing in the house. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA, 1986a) estimates that elevated levels of indoor radon may be associated with 5,000 to 20,000 of the 130,000 lung cancer deaths per year. They also estimate that 8 to 12 percent of the homes in the United States will have annual average indoor radon levels exceeding 4 picoCuries per liter of air (pCi/L). Above this level, the U.S. EPA recommends homeowners take remedial action. May factors control the amount of radon which may enter a home from the geologic environment. Soil drainage, permeability, and moisture content effect the amount of radon that can be released from rocks and soils (known as the emmanation) and may limit or increase how far it can migrate. Well drained, highly permeable soils facilitate the movement of radon. Soils with water content in the 8 to 15 percent range enhance the emmanation of radon (Lindmark, 1985). Daily and seasonal variations in soil and indoor radon can be caused by meteorologic factors such as barometric pressure, temperature, and wind (Clements and Wilkening, 1974; Schery and other, 1984). Construction practices also inhibit or promote entry of radon into the home (U.S. EPA, 1986b). In general, however, geology controls the source and distribution of radon (Akerblom and Wilson, 1982; Gundersen and others, 1987, 1988; Sextro and others, 1987; U.S. EPA, 1983; Peake, 1988; Peake and Hess, 1988). The following sections describe: 1) the methods used to measure radon and equivalent uranium (eU) in soil; 2) the radon potential ratings that were developed for this study; and 3) the characteristics of the rocks and soils in Montgomery County that give them their radon potential.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf2043","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Montgomery County Government","usgsCitation":"Gundersen, L., Reimer, G., Wiggs, C., and Rice, C.A., 1988, Map showing radon potential of rocks and soils in Montgomery County, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2043, 1 Plate: 55.24 x 42.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2043.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 55.24 x 42.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":184818,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2043/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":278829,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2043/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"62500","datum":"National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929","country":"United States","state":"Maryl","county":"Montgomery County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.5,38.916667 ], [ -77.5,39.333333 ], [ -76.916667,39.333333 ], [ -76.916667,38.916667 ], [ -77.5,38.916667 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a95e4b07f02db659e36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gundersen, L.C.","contributorId":19154,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gundersen","given":"L.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reimer, G.M.","contributorId":59800,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reimer","given":"G.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wiggs, C.R.","contributorId":57152,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiggs","given":"C.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":259639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rice, C. The wells are in an area where thick units of Paleozoic carbonate rock are overlain by Tertiary semiconsolidated basin-fill deposits and Quaternary alluvial deposits. Data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey were augmented with data from previous investigations; however, complete sets of logs and other data are not available for all eight wells. Geophysical data presented included natural-gamma, neutron, gamma-gamma density, caliper, temperature, acoustic, single-point resistance, long- and short-natural resistivity, and spontaneous-potential logs. Drilling penetration rates, lithologic columns, and well construction are also summarized and presented. Measurements of drawdown and recovery during and after constant-discharge pumping periods are also included. Also presented are results of chemical and physical analyses for major-ion chemistry, trace constituents, stable and radioactive isotopes, temperature, pH, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen.
