They are world views, ways of thinking, and ways of communicating. They depict our world and guide us through it. Visual Geography probes the essence of maps and mapmaking. It follows the story of cartography through the millennia, across the globe, and beyond the solar system. It includes some of the world's most beautiful and enduring maps, some of its most historic - a map in Columbus' hand, the map that was carried to the Moon, the first map to show America - and it examines the urge to map, to measure our world, and to record it graphically.","language":"English","doi":"10.3133/70039480","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, National Geographic Society, and U.S. Department of the Interior, 1991, Visual geography: General Information Product, 3 p. We give the guidelines to estimate LSER variable values quickly for a vast array of possible organic compounds such as those found in the environment. The difficulty in generating these variables has greatly discouraged the application of this quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) method. This paper present the first compilation of molecular functional group values together with a utilitarian set of the LSER variable estimation rules. The availability of these variable values and rules should facilitate widespread application of LSER for hazard evaluation of environmental contaminants.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Environmental Science and Technology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.1021/es00022a012","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Hickey, J.P., and Passino-Reader, D.R., 1991, Linear solvation energy relationships: \"rule of thumb\" for estimation of variable values: Environmental Science & Technology, v. 25, no. 10, p. 1753-1760, https://doi.org/10.1021/es00022a012.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"1753","endPage":"1760","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":259872,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259827,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/es00022a012","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"25","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a47c6e4b0c8380cd6797a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hickey, James P.","contributorId":83460,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hickey","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":354723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Passino-Reader, Dora R.","contributorId":50839,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Passino-Reader","given":"Dora","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":354722,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The chromatic and leuco forms of the dyes were separated within 11 min on a C<sub>18</sub> column with a mobile phase of 0.05 <i>M</i> sodium acetate and 0.05 <i>M</i> acetic acid in water (19%) and methanol (81%). A reaction chamber, containing 10% PbO<sub>2</sub> in Celite 545, was placed between the column and the spectrophotometric detector to oxidize the leuco forms of the dyes to their chromatic forms. Chromatic and leuco malachite green were quantified by their absorbance at 618 nm; and chromatic and leuco Crystal Violet by their absorbance at 588 nm. Detection limits for chromatic and leuco forms of both dyes ranged from 0.12 to 0.28 ng. A linear range of 1 to 100 ng was established for both forms of the dyes.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Chromatography","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/S0021-9673(01)89252-9","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Allen, J.L., and Meinertz, J., 1991, Post-column reaction for simultaneous analysis of chromatic and leuco forms of malachite green and crystal violet by high-performance liquid chromatography with photometric detection: Journal of Chromatography, v. 536, no. 1-2, p. 217-222, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0021-9673(01)89252-9.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"217","endPage":"222","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":259722,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259707,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0021-9673(01)89252-9","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"536","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a7e5ce4b0c8380cd7a4c6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Allen, J. This population occupied a 3.8 km long sandy shoal in the discharge plume of a steam-electric power plant on the St. Clair River (Michigan), the outflow of Lake Huron.  Samples collected April 1986 to April 1987 revealed the growth of one-year-old Corbicula (1985 cohort) began after mid-May and ended by mid-November, while water temperatures were higher than 9&deg;C.  Maximum growth (0.78 mm wk<sup>-1</sup>) occurred between mid-August and mid-September, while water temperatures were about 16-23&deg;C.  We recorded a substantial overwinter mortality of the 1986 cohort, but not the 1985 cohort; this was particularly evident at sampling locations more remote from the heated discharge of the power plant, suggesting low water temperature wast the major mortality agent.  The available information suggests low water temperature in the St. Clair River may limit the success of Corbicula in the river, including portions of populations inhabiting thermal plumes, by reducing growth, delaying the onset of sexual maturity and reproduction, and causing heavy overwinter mortality in the first year of life.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Hydrobiologia","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1007/BF00024753","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"French, J.R., and Schloesser, D.W., 1991, Growth and overwinter survival of the Asiatic clam, Corbicula fluminea, in the St. Clair River, Michigan: Hydrobiologia, v. 219, no. 1, p. 165-170, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00024753.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"165","endPage":"170","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":259871,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259824,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00024753","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","otherGeospatial":"St. Clair River","volume":"219","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a2deae4b0c8380cd5c12b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"French, John R. Microfine bentonite was successfully held in suspension in specially constructed units during a 21-d fishless test, a 28-d experiment with juvenile green sunfish (lepomis cyanellus), and four shorter experiments (5-9 d) with four species of larval fishes, white sucker (catostomus commersoni), northern pike (esox lucius), channel catfish (ictalurus punctatus), and walleye (stizostedion vitreum).  Each experiment on larval fish was conducted until the yolk-sac had been absorbed.  Concentrations of bentonite ranged from 0 to 728 mg/l.  Each unit consisted of a holding chamber set in a stainless steel bowl and two submersible pumps that recirculated the suspension.  Turbidity readings remained nearly constant throughout each experiment.  Because the turbidity of suspensions was well correlated with bentonite concentration (<i>r</i><sup>2</sup> = 0.989) And easy to measure, turbidity was used as an indicator of concentration.  The system is inexpensive, easy to assemble, and does not require a diluter system to maintain constant concentrations of suspended material.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Progressive Fish-Culturist","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"Philadelphia, PA","doi":"10.1577/1548-8640(1991)053<0028:SFMSSD>2.3.CO;2","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Chilton, E., 1991, System for maintaining sediment suspensions during larval fish studies: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 53, no. 1, p. 28-33, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8640(1991)053<0028:SFMSSD>2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"28","endPage":"33","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258412,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":258396,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8640(1991)053<0028:SFMSSD>2.3.CO;2","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"volume":"53","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba367e4b08c986b31fcb9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chilton, E.W. Its 765 maps and charts are on 335 14- by 19-inch pages. Many of the maps span facing pages. It's worth a quick trip to the library just to leaf through all 335 pages of this book. Rapid scanning of its thematic maps yields rich insights to the geography of issues of continuing national interest. On most maps, the geographic patterns are still valid, though the data are not current. The atlas is out of print, but many of its maps can be purchased separately. Maps that span facing pages in the atlas are printed on one sheet. The maps dated after 1970 are either revisions of original atlas maps, or new maps published in atlas format. The titles of the separate maps are listed here.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70039583","collaboration":"National Mapping Program","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1991, National Atlas maps: Monograph, 2 p.; maps (col.), https://doi.org/10.3133/70039583.","productDescription":"2 p.; maps (col.)","numberOfPages":"2","costCenters":[{"id":225,"text":"Earth Science Information Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":261101,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039583/report.pdf"},{"id":261102,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039583/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a6196e4b0c8380cd71a4e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535378,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Chandler, describe the density, biomass, and growth of a now extinct population of burrowing mayfly nymphs (primarily <i>Hexagenia limbata</i>) that lived in the sediments of western Lake Erie near South Bass Island. The growth dynamics of this population have not previously been documented. Female nymphs grew faster than males and were about 4 mm longer than males at emergence each year. Significantly fewer nymphs were collected in 1943 than in 1942 or 1944. Before they were extinguished by low dissolved oxygen in 1953, mayfly nymphs were abundant (about 350 weighing 10 wet g m<sup>-2</sup>) near this island and throughout most of western Lake Erie. The western basin once supported a biomass of 9.6 t &middot; km<sup>-2</sup> or at least 17,600 metric tonnes of mayfly nymphs. If burrowing mayflies recolonize the sediments of western Lake Erie, these data could be used to assess the extent of their recovery.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Great Lakes Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/S0380-1330(91)71387-7","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Manny, B.A., 1991, Burrowing mayfly nymphs in western Lake Erie, 1942-1944: Journal of Great Lakes Research, v. 17, no. 4, p. 517-521, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0380-1330(91)71387-7.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"517","endPage":"521","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":259808,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259798,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0380-1330(91)71387-7","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Lake Erie;South Bass Island","volume":"17","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f2bae4b0c8380cd4b312","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Manny, Bruce A. 0000-0002-4074-9329 bmanny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4074-9329","contributorId":3699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manny","given":"Bruce","email":"bmanny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":354662,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The results elucidate the process of mixing of deep and shallow groundwater (below and within 6 m from land surface) entering the drain laterals. The deep groundwater was subject to evapoconcentration prior to drainage system installation and has been displaced downward (to depths greater than 6 m) in the groundwater system. The proportions of deep and shallow groundwater entering the drain laterals was calculated from the end-member oxygen 18 compositions determined in groundwater samples. The percentage of total drain lateral flow which is deep groundwater flow is about 30% for the shallow drain lateral (1.8 m below land surface) (drain lateral 1)) and 60% for the deep drain lateral (2.7 m below land surface (drain lateral 2)). During irrigation, the percentages of deep groundwater flow decrease to 0 and 30% for the shallow and deep drain laterals, respectively. Selenium concentrations in drain lateral waters decrease during irrigation but selenium loads increase. Total estimated annual loads were 1.1 and 5.4 kg of selenium for drain laterals 1 and 2, respectively. Substantial percentages of the annual load occurred during 8 days of irrigation, 23 and 9% for drain laterals 1 and 2, respectively.</p></div>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/91WR01367","usgsCitation":"Deverel, S.J., and Fio, J.L., 1991, Groundwater flow and solute movement to drain laterals, western San Joaquin Valley, California: 1. Modeling results were used to calculate the depth distribution of groundwater flowing into drain laterals at 1.8 m (drain lateral 1) and 2.7 m (drain lateral 2) below land surface. The simulations indicated that under nonirrigated conditions about 89% of the flow in drain lateral 2 was from groundwater originating from depths greater than 6 m below land surface. The deep groundwater has higher selenium concentrations than shallow groundwater. Simulation of irrigated conditions indicates that as recharge (deep percolation) increases, the proportional contribution of deep groundwater to drain lateral flow decreases. Best-selling science books have been rare, but generally readable. Regional books, also important sources of scientific information, aim at much smaller, far more price-sensitive audiences. Many successful regional, nontechnical science books are readable, heavily illustrated, and in some cases, cross-disciplinary. To increase the attentive audience for scientific information, improvement in science education is necessary, and the most efficacious role for scientific institutions may be the production of materials that can be easily incorporated into school curricula. ?? 1991 Springer.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Publishing Research Quarterly","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF02678443","issn":"10538801","usgsCitation":"Buchanan, R., 1991, Books and the popularization of science: Publishing Research Quarterly, v. 7, no. 1, p. 5-10, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF02678443.","startPage":"5","endPage":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":18974,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF02678443"},{"id":203554,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602aba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Buchanan, R.","contributorId":71677,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buchanan","given":"R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":346402,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Bougainville guyot fills the New Hebrides trench, stands about 3 km above the abyssal ocean plain, and is capped by a broad platform that is underlain by a parallel bedded sequence, probably lagoon and reef rocks. A thick debris apron made up of unconsolidated sediment underlies the unsubducted part of the lower guyot flank and possibly the subducted flank as well. The contact zone between the arc and the north and east sides of the guyot is marked by discontinuous antiforms that include reflective, thrust faulted rocks that may have been derived from the guyot. The extent of collision deformation to the arc and guyot depends in part on the contrast in compressibility and viscosity between these features. We propose that the high-drag, subcircular guyot evolves during collision into a more streamlined shape. Streamlining may be achieved by processes like: (1) bulk deformation of the guyot by thrust faulting and sediment compaction; (2) ripping away of projecting parts of the guyot and blunting sharp edges (tectonic erosion), like that formed by the limestone cap; and (3) formation of a boundary layer, between the guyot and the arc, that is made up of water-rich, mobilized units of soft sediment. We draw an analogy between some features of glacial origin and the subducted part of a guyot. If the bulk of the guyot is low strength, especially in view of the thick debris apron, then the guyot may behave like till that was overridden by a glacier and forms a drumlin, an elongated, blunt-faced, streamlined feature. Thrust faults evident in the guyot may indicate deformation that leads toward a streamlined shape and not necessarily to accretion of guyot rocks.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/91TC00860","issn":"02787407","usgsCitation":"Fisher, M.A., Collot, J., and Geist, E., 1991, Structure of the collision zone between Bougainville guyot and the accretionary wedge of the New Hebrides Island arc, southwest Pacific: Tectonics, v. 10, no. 5, p. 887-903, https://doi.org/10.1029/91TC00860.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"887","endPage":"903","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224062,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"southwest Pacific","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              162.42275276154066,\n              -12.021856630949301\n            ],\n            [\n              162.42275276154066,\n              -23.23794487949482\n            ],\n            [\n              174.9885822828984,\n              -23.23794487949482\n            ],\n            [\n              174.9885822828984,\n              -12.021856630949301\n            ],\n            [\n              162.42275276154066,\n              -12.021856630949301\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9c62e4b08c986b31d3d8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fisher, Michael A. mfisher@usgs.gov","contributorId":1991,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fisher","given":"Michael","email":"mfisher@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":369633,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Collot, J.-Y.","contributorId":39130,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Collot","given":"J.-Y.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369632,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Geist, E.L. 0000-0003-0611-1150","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0611-1150","contributorId":71993,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Geist","given":"E.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369634,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

A spectacular rift shoulder scarp along which peaks reach 4–5 km maximum elevation marks one flank and extends from northern Victoria Land-Queen Maud Mountains to the Ellsworth-Whitmore-Horlick Mountains. The rift shoulder has maximum present physiographic relief of 5 km in the Ross Embayment and 7 km in the Ellsworth Mountains-Byrd Subglacial Basin area. The Transantarctic Mountains part of the rift shoulder (and probably the entire shoulder) has been interpreted as rising since about 60 Ma, at episodic rates of ∼1 km/m.y., most recently since mid-Pliocene time, rather than continuously at the mean rate of 100 m/m.y. The rift system is characterized by bimodal alkaline volcanic rocks ranging from at least Oligocene to the present. These are exposed asymmetrically along the rift flanks and at the south end of the Antarctic Peninsula. The trend of the Jurassic tholeiites (Ferrar dolerites, Kirkpatric basalts) marking the Jurassic Transantarctic rift is coincident with exposures of the late Cenozoic volcanic rocks along the section of the Transantarctic Mountains from northern Victoria Land to the Horlick Mountains. The Cenozoic rift shoulder diverges here from the Jurassic tholeiite trend, and the tholeiites are exposed continuously (including the Dufek intrusion) along the lower- elevation (1–2 km) section of Transantarctic Mountains to the Weddell Sea. Widely spaced aeromagnetic profiles in West Antarctica indicate the absence of Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the ice covered part of the Whitmore-Ellsworth-Mountain block and suggest their widespread occurrence beneath the western part of the ice sheet overlying the Byrd Subglacial Basin. A German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR)-U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) aeromagnetic survey over the Ross Sea continental shelf indicates rift fabric and suggests numerous submarine volcanoes along discrete NNW trending zones. A Bouguer anomaly range of approximately 200 (+50 to −150) mGal having 4–7 mGal/km gradients where measured in places marks the rift shoulder from northern Victoria Land possibly to the Ellsworth Mountains (where data are too sparse to determine maximum amplitude and gradient). The steepest gravity gradients across the rift shoulder require high density (mafic or ultramafic?) rock within the crust as well as at least 12 km of thinner crust beneath the West Antarctic rift system in contrast to East Antarctica. Sparse land seismic data reported along the rift shoulder, where velocities are greater than 7 km/s, and marine data indicating velocities above 7 km/s beneath the Ross Sea continental shelf support this interpretation. The maximum Bouguer gravity range in the Pensacola Mountains area of the Transantarctic Mountains is only about 130 mGal with a maximum 2 mGal/km gradient, which can be explained solely by 8 km of crustal thickening. Large offset seismic profiles over the Ross Sea shelf collected by the German Antarctic North Victoria Land Expedition V (GANOVEX V) combined with earlier USGS and other results indicate 17–21 km thickness for the crust beneath the Ross Sea shelf which we interpret as evidence of extended rifted continental crust. A regional positive Bouguer anomaly (0 to +50 mGal), the width of the rift, extends from the Ross Sea continental shelf throughout the Ross Embayment and Byrd Subglacial Basin area of the West Antarctic rift system and indicates that the Moho is approximately 20 km deep tied to the seismic results (probably coincident with the top of the asthenosphere) rather than the 30 km reported in earlier interpretations. The interpretation of horst and graben structures in the Ross Sea, made from marine seismic reflection data, probably can be extended throughout the rift (i.e., the Ross Ice shelf and the Byrd Subglacial Basin areas). The near absence of earthquakes in the West Antarctic rift system probably results from a combination of primarily sparse seismograph coverage and, secondarily, suppression of earthquakes by the ice sheet (e.g., Johnston, 1987) and very high seismicity shortly after deglaciation in the Ross Embayment followed by abnormally low seismicity at present (e.g., Muir Wood, 1989). The evidence of high temperatures at shallow depth beneath the Ross Sea continental shelf and adjacent Transantarctic Mountains is supportive of thermal uplift of the mountains associated with lateral heat conduction from the rift and can possibly also explain the volcanism, rifting, and high elevation of the entire rift shoulder to the Ellsworth-Horlick-Whitmore Mountains. We infer that the Gondwana breakup and the West Antarctic rift are part of a continuously propagating rift that started in the Jurassic when Africa separated from East Antarctica (including the failed Jurassic Transantarctic rift). Rifting proceeded clockwise around East Antarctica to the separation of New Zealand and the Campbell Plateau about 85–95 Ma and has continued (with a spreading center jump) to its present location in the Ross Embayment and West Antarctica. The Cenozoic activity of the West Antarctic rift system appears to be continuous in time with rifting in the same area that began only in the late Mesozoic. Although the mechanism for rifting is not completely explained, we suggest a combination of the flexural rigidity model (Stem and ten Brink, 1989) proposed for the Ross Embayment and the thermal plume or hot spot concepts. The propagating rift may have been “captured” by the thermal plume.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/91TC00868","issn":"02787407","usgsCitation":"Behrendt, J.C., LeMasurier, W., Cooper, A.K., Tessensohn, F., Trehu, A., and Damaske, D., 1991, Geophysical studies of the West Antarctic rift system: Tectonics, v. 10, no. 6, p. 1257-1273, https://doi.org/10.1029/91TC00868.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"1257","endPage":"1273","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":222853,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Ross Sea, Victoria Land","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -170.15625,\n -87.90272143026618\n ],\n [\n 180,\n -87.90272143026618\n ],\n [\n 180,\n -60.93043220292333\n ],\n [\n -170.15625,\n -60.93043220292333\n ],\n [\n -170.15625,\n -87.90272143026618\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a286ee4b0c8380cd5a0f0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Behrendt, John C. jbehrendt@usgs.gov","contributorId":25945,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Behrendt","given":"John","email":"jbehrendt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":213,"text":"Crustal Imaging and Characterization Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":373844,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"LeMasurier, W.E.","contributorId":7006,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LeMasurier","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":373843,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cooper, A. It was concluded that, although much research work remains, Lyme borreliosis is to a large extent a preventable infection. Avoidance of heavily tick-infested areas, personal protection using proper clothing, and prompt removal of attached ticks remain the most effective protective measures. Many other prophylactic measures are available and could be efficiently integrated into schemes to reduce the abundance of vectors. However, since the ecology of the infection varies greatly between different localities it may be necessary to apply different combinations of control methods in different endemic regions.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Jaenson, T., Fish, D., Ginsberg, H., Gray, J., Mather, T., and Piesman, J., 1991, Methods for control of tick vectors of Lyme Borreliosis: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, v.
