The monzonite intrudes mafic igneous and Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The maximum equivalent-uranium content of the zircon is 0.14 percent, and the average content is probably near 0. 13 percent. Chemical analysis of one sample of the most radioactive zircon indicates approximately 0.12 percent uranium and 0.03 percent thoria. The radioactive elements apparently are most commonly associated with reddish-brown inclusions within the zircon crystals. \r\n\r\nTests of sulfide-bearing veins, black shales, and other rock types in the area around Flat showed no significant amount of radioactive material. \r\n\r\nAlthough there is little likelihood of finding high-grade uranium deposits in the area covered by the 1947 investigation, the fact that the predominant radioactive element in the monzonite is uranium may indicate that other intrusives of the same age in the Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim region might also contain uraniferous material. Suitable sites for industrial and community development near the proposed power source are limited because of the extremely rugged and mountainous terrain of the Lynn Canal area. \r\n\r\nThis report considers potential industrial areas at Skagway, Taiya River, Ferebee River, Lutak Inlet, Haines and vicinity, Klukwan and vicinity, Haines to Klukwan along the Haines cutoff, Berners Bay, and Juneau and vicinity. It is 2 to 6 miles east of the Richardson Highway. The coal field is about 16 square miles in area, the major part of which is a rolling plateau that slopes gently northward and is bounded on the east, south and west, by bluffs facing Jarvis Creek, Ruby Creek and Delta River.
The oldest rock is pre-Cambrian Birch Creek schist, which is largely quartz-sericite schist with many quartz veins, and is locally intruded by rhyolite dikes. it is overlain by the Tertiary coal-bearing formation. Quaternary deposits include gravel, till, solifluction debris, and wind-borne deposits.

Concentrates from placers derived from areas containing granite are more radioactive than concentrates from placers not derived from the granite and, generally, contain from 0.01 to 0.05 percent equivalent uranium. The radioactivity of these concentrates is largely due to radioactive elements in common accessory minerals in granite, such as sphene, allanite, zircon, and, locally, monazite. Locally, in the Clear Creek-Vulcan Creek rea, the headwaters of the Kwiniuk River, and on Golovnin Bay near McKinley Creek, concentrates from placers derived from granitic terrain contain as much as 0.1 percent equivalent uranium. The stratigraphy and structure of the mapped area south of the anticlinorium are reviewed. Two facies of the Lisburne formation, a calcarenite-hydroclastic limestone facies and a black shale, black chert and dark limestone facies, have been distinguished. In the southern foothills, the black shale facies appears to have been thrust from the south over the limestone facies. The available evidence indicates that the Lisburne formation, as limestone or a more proximal facies was doposited over the area of the anticlinorium. Following a redefinition of the Torok formation in the type area, strata formerly mapped as Torok have here been designated Castle Mountain formation. The depositional history of the Castle Mountain formation reflects active orogeny. Lenses of coarse clastics appear to have been dumped in local basins; equivalent beds to the north are much finer. A basal zone of sandstone may be more extensive and may correlate with the sandstones noted along and north of the anticlinorium.

Bedrock in this region includes limestone, argillaceous rocks, chert, and a wide variety of other lithologic types ranging in age from Devonian to Cretaceous.
The major geologic structures of the area are oriented parallel to the regional northeast trend of the Alaska Range. Devonian rocks crop out on the south flank of the range, with generally north-dipping strata of Mesozoic age occurring in the area to the southeast. A northeast-trending fault separates the rocks of the two eras.
Two limestone deposits of the Devonian system are of adequate size and quality for cement manufacturing purposes. They are located 7 and 11 miles west of the Alaska Railroad; argillaceous rocks occur in both the Devonian and Jurassic(?) systems and are found in many parts of the area. Chert, of Triassic age, possibly of some value as a high-silica component, was found adjacent to the Alaska Railroad near Windy Station.
