Concentrates from placers derived from areas containing granite are more radioactive than concentrates from placers not derived from the granite and, generally, contain from 0.01 to 0.05 percent equivalent uranium. The radioactivity of these concentrates is largely due to radioactive elements in common accessory minerals in granite, such as sphene, allanite, zircon, and, locally, monazite. Locally, in the Clear Creek-Vulcan Creek rea, the headwaters of the Kwiniuk River, and on Golovnin Bay near McKinley Creek, concentrates from placers derived from granitic terrain contain as much as 0.1 percent equivalent uranium. The monzonite intrudes mafic igneous and Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The maximum equivalent-uranium content of the zircon is 0.14 percent, and the average content is probably near 0. 13 percent. Chemical analysis of one sample of the most radioactive zircon indicates approximately 0.12 percent uranium and 0.03 percent thoria. The radioactive elements apparently are most commonly associated with reddish-brown inclusions within the zircon crystals. \r\n\r\nTests of sulfide-bearing veins, black shales, and other rock types in the area around Flat showed no significant amount of radioactive material. \r\n\r\nAlthough there is little likelihood of finding high-grade uranium deposits in the area covered by the 1947 investigation, the fact that the predominant radioactive element in the monzonite is uranium may indicate that other intrusives of the same age in the Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim region might also contain uraniferous material. It has been sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey and has required about seven months' time of both authors gathering and compiling data and evaluating fossil evidence. As the two regions dealt with in the chart are widely separated, the lists of references are also given separately. The annotations dealing with Greenland are based entirely on published information. The annotations dealing with Alaska are based on a re-examination of nearly all the Cretaceous fossils from Alaska are based on a re-examination of nearly all the Cretaceous fossils from Alaska in the collections of the Geological Survey. This has resulted in many concepts not hitherto published and in some concepts that are completely at variance with those that have been published. Naturally for large areas undergoing active exploration, such as Alaska, a correlation chart is out of date in many particulars as soon as published. Nevertheless it is valuable to the field man whose activities are confined to small areas but who must interpret much of his data in terms of surrounding areas that he has not seen. It is valuable to the student and to the general geologist because it organizes scattered information in a manner that can be applied in their field problems, makes quite unnecessary the memorization of stratigraphic correlations are based on observation and reasoning and not on a vast memory. It is probably of greatest value to the specialist who makes the chart because he discovers what areas and problems are most in need of research and can thereby direct his efforts and those of his The relief is about 3,500 feet, and the highest mountain reaches an altitude of 4,453 feet. Remnants of larger glaciers and perennial snow fields cover many of the higher summits, and glacial erratics at elevations above 3,100 feet attest to a former thick ice cover.\r\n\r\nThe bedded rocks are crystalline schists that locally reach katozonal metamorphic rank as indicated by biotite-garnet-kyanite-sillimanite mineral assemblages. The schists are believed to be dominantly a product of regional metamorphism predating the intrusion of rocks related to the Coast Range batholith. It appears, however, that stresses continued to be active during igneous and granitizing activity accompanying the Coast Range orogeny.\r\n\r\nThe major intrusive bodies are a composite quartz-dioritic batholith and quartz-diorite sills that locally reach a thickness of more than two thousand feet. The sills usually are notably gneissic, and appear to have formed by intrusion rather than replacement. The batholith is a composite body formed by migmatization, replacement, and local fusion. A stressed environment during formation is suggested by a primary gneissic structure. A high quartz content and a paucity of potash feldspars is diagnostic of the intrusive bodies. In addition to the bodies of quartz-diorite, small sills and dikes of gabbro, quartz-pegmatite, and unmetamorphosed diabase intrude the schists.\r\n\r\nOverturned folds in the schists are nearly isoclinal, and some of the folds are large enough to cause repetition of beds in the Clark Peak schists.\r\n\r\nTwo persistent northwest-trending strike faults of small displacement cut the schists. Two east-trending faults of larger displacement are marked by thick gouge zones locally containing graphite. The rocks near the faults are hydrothermally altered and pyritized, and at least two of the diabase dikes are crushed and hydrothermally altered near one of the northwest-trending faults. The Jarvis Creek coal field lies on the north side of the Alaska Range between latitudes 63°35' and 63°45 N., and longitudes 145°40' and 145°50 W. It is 2 to 6 miles east of the Richardson Highway. The coal field is about 16 square miles in area, the major part of which is a rolling plateau that slopes gently northward and is bounded on the east, south and west, by bluffs facing Jarvis Creek, Ruby Creek and Delta River.

The oldest rock is pre-Cambrian Birch Creek schist, which is largely quartz-sericite schist with many quartz veins, and is locally intruded by rhyolite dikes. it is overlain by the Tertiary coal-bearing formation. Quaternary deposits include gravel, till, solifluction debris, and wind-borne deposits.

Alaska","docAbstract":"During the summer of 1950 on the insular shelf surrounding the Near Islands, Alaska, 193 oceanographic stations were occupied from aboard the U. S. Geological Survey vessel EIDER. Bottom character and temperature observations were made at these stations. The composition and size distribution characteristics of the bottom samples have been determined. Components of terrigenous origin are angular to subangular sand and silt and angular to well rounded granules, pebbles, and cobbles, all composed of little-altered fragments of the fine grained insular rocks. Components of marine origin are the skeletons of Foraminifera, diatoms, and sponges and the broken shells of a few species of mollusks and of one echinoid species. A chart, based also on the study of approximately 600 USC&GS bottom notations, was prepared to show the distribution of these components of the sediments. Bed rock is exposed on most of the shelf; where sediment occurs terrigenous components are generally most important near shore, whereas marine components are more important seaward of the islands. Studies of the Foraminifera fauna and the diatom flora (identified by K. E. Lohman) and the few mollusks of quantitative importance show these organisms to be forms characteristic of cold or deep water or occurring in a wide range of temperature conditions. The Foraminifera exhibit depth zonation which seems to be controlled in part by temperature and in part by depth or some other variable which is a function of depth. Sphericity and roundness studies made on pebbles from the shelf, the beaches, and the fluvio-glacial deposits together with shelf topographic features and Foraminifera from sediment deposited before ice wastage was complete suggest the shelf was not subjected to prolonged surf action during the post-glacial rise of sea level. \r\n\r\nTo aid in interpreting the sediments and their distribution several subaerial and marine environmental factors were investigated. Those factors found to be of most importance in determining sediment character and distribution are recent geologic history, nature of terrigenous source material, temperature, topography, rainfall, size of source area, history of the water mass, waves, and currents. A heavy-mineral fraction obtained from a granite boulder probably derived from a bench gravel on Gold Run contains 0. 017 percent equivalent uranium, but the radioactivity is due to allanite and zircon. \r\n\r\nThe types of bedrock tested include schist, slate, and greenstone. Readings on fresh surfaces of rock were the same as, or only slightly above the background count. The Nenana River flows northward across the Alaska Range near 149° west longitude. Sedimentary bedrock formations of its basin include pre-Cambrian schist undifferentiated Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks, continental upper Cretaceous rocks and poorly consolidated continental Tertiary rocks. Igneous rocks include pre Devonian quartz orthoclase schist, greenstone, granitic and basic intrusives of pre- Upper Cretaceous age, and doleritic and andesitic intrusives of Upper Cretaceous age.

Reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in the Nixon Fork mining district, Medfra quadrangle, central Alaska, in 1949 disclosed the occurrence of allanite in sampled containing as much as 0.05 percent equivalent uranium from the dump of the Whalen mine; the presence of radioactive parisite (a rare-earth fluocarbonate) in a highly altered limestone containing about 0.025 percent equivalent uranium near the Whalen shaft; and radioactive idocrase in samples of altered garnet rock with about 0.025 percent equivalent uranium, form the Crystal shaft of the Nixon Fork mine. This radioactivity is due mostly to thorium rather than uranium. Placer concentrates\nfrom Ruby and Eagle Creeks contain 0.078 and 0.26 percent equivalent uranium respectively,\nin which the radioactivity is due chiefly to uraniferous thorianite. The\nbedrock source of the uraniferous thorianite was not located primarily because much of\nthe area is overlain by a relatively thick mantle of vegetation (mostly moss) which\nlimited the effectiveness of radiometric surveying. The uraniferous thorianite is\nbelieved to occur in a restricted zone or zones at or near the contact of limestone with\nmonzonite similar to the gold-copper ores of the district and the deposits of radioactive\nparisite and garnet rock at the Whelan and Crystal shafts respectively.
