The U.S. Geological Survey has provided specific conductance, temperature, and dissolved oxygen data to the City of Houston for three sites along a 7.7-mile reach of Buffalo Bayou since 1986. Summary statistics and graphical comparisons of the data show substantial variability in the properties during 1986-91. Specific conductance ranged from about 100 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius at each of the three sites to 17,100 microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius at the most downstream site, at the headwaters of the Houston Ship Channel. Water temperatures ranged from 5 to 33 degrees Celsius. Temperatures were very similar at the two upstream sites and slightly warmer at the most downstream site. Dissolved oxygen ranged from zero at the most downstream site to 11.7 milligrams per liter at the most upstream site.

To enhance visitor safety and to protect cultural and natural resources, the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Park Service studied flood-hazard potentials within the boundaries of the Pinnacles National Monument. This study area extends from about a quarter of a mile north of Chalone Creek Campground to the mouth of Bear Valley and from the east monument entrance to Chalone Creek. Historical data of precipitation and floodflow within the monument area are sparse to nonexistent, therefore, U.S. Soil Conservation Service unit-hydrograph procedures were used to determine the magnitude of a 100-year flood. Because of a lack of specific storm-rainfall data, a simulated storm was applied to the basins using a digital-computer model developed by the Soil Conservation Service. A graphical relation was used to define the regionally based maximum flood for Chalone Creek and Bear Valley. Water-surface elevations and inundation areas were determined using a conventional step-backwater program. Flood-zone boundaries were derived from the computed water-surface elevations. The 100-year flood plain for both streams would be inundated at all points by the regional maximum flood. Most of the buildings and proposed building sites in the monument area are above the elevation of the 100-year flood, except the proposed building sites near the horse corral and the east monument entrance. The 100-year flood may cause reverse flow through a 12-inch culvert embedded in the embankment of Old Pinnacles Campground Road in the center of Chalone Creek Campground. In southern California, the largest ground water level change was a drop of 52 cm at Crystalaire. Most of the steplike water-level changes recorded following the Northridge earthquake agreed in direction with the sign of the calculated coseismic volume strain field. A spring discharge increase at Southern Pacific Springs was reported to have preceded the earthquake by several days. Outside of southern California, water-level changes were also observed, but are not consistent in sign or size with the static strain field of the earthquake sequence.

These data were produced at the request of various individuals to provide needed subsurface-temperature data for their investigations. The fluid-inclusion information presented in this report has not been previously published, and, since the author did not work in these geothermal areas, only a very minimal attempt is made at interpreting the data. Information on the location of the drill holes from which the core specimens originated ranges from very poor in the case of the Russian drill holes to very good for those in the USA.
Mineral specimens from drill-core samples in the five geothermal areas were utilized as cleavage chips, thin sections polished on a single side, or double polished thin sections (polished on both sides). Fluid inclusions from all three USA geothermal areas were found in either hydrothermal or primary quartz crystals. These fluid inclusions firstly were frozen and gradually thawed to determine the final melting-point temperatures (Tm) as the last piece of ice melted and secondly, were heated to the temperature at which the vapor phase disappeared to obtain homogenization temperatures (Tn). For the El Salvador and Russian core specimens the fluid inclusions were hosted in calcite, and the order of the two procedures was reversed because calcite is a much softer mineral than quartz and there is a greater danger of the fluid inclusions decrepitating as the ice expands during freezing.
A Chaixmeca microthermometry apparatus was used during studies of the Steamboat Springs and The Geysers fluid inclusions. For the remaining studies, a Linkam THM 600 heating/freezing stage and TMS 90 temperature control system were employed. Accuracy of the data generated from both instruments is similar, with values of about ±2°C for heating studies and about ±0.2°C for the freezing methods.

Samples were analyzed for selected physical and chemical properties, bacteria, major ions, nutrients, selected metals, total organic carbon, selected herbicides, and chlorophyll-a and -b. During May through August 1993, precipitation at all four reservoirs exceeded mean precipitation at nearby long-term precipitation gages; precipitation ranged from 7.76 inches above the long-term mean at Pomona Lake to 12.62 inches above the long-term mean at Rathbun Reservoir. Reservoir water-surface elevations exceeded flood-pool elevation by 4 feet in Clinton Lake, by 19 feet in Pomona Lake, and by 2 feet in Harlan County Reservoir in July. Thermal stratification of water occurred at one site in Rathbun Reservoir in August, at two sites in Clinton Lake in May, at one site in Pomona Lake in June, and at one site in Harlan County Reservoir in June. Total triazine herbicide concentrations in water samples from all four reservoirs ranged from 0.2 to 19 micrograms per liter and were largest water samples from Rathbun Reservoir in June. Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), is the most commonly used fuel oxygenate and is a relatively new gasoline additive. Nevertheless, out of 60 volatile organic chemicals analyzed, MTBE was the second most frequently detected chemical in samples of shallow ambient ground water from urban areas that were collected during 1993-94 as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment program. Samples were collected from 5 drinking-water wells, 12 springs, and 193 monitoring wells in urban areas. No MTBE was detected in drinking-water wells. At a reporting level of 0.2 ug/L (micrograms per liter), MTBE was detected most frequently in shallow ground water from urban areas (27 percent of 210 wells and springs sampled in 8 areas) as compared to shallow ground water from agricultural areas (1.3 percent of 549 wells sampled in 21 areas) or deeper ground water from major aquifers (1 percent of 412 wells sampled in 9 areas). Only 3 percent of the shallow wells sampled in urban areas had concentrations of MTBE that exceed 20 ug/L, which is the estimated lower limit of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency draft drinking-water health advisory. Because MTBE is persistent and mobile in ground water, it can move from shallow to deeper aquifers with time. In shallow urban ground water, MTBE generally was not found with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, or xylenes (BTEX) compounds which commonly are associated with gasoline spills. This disassociation causes uncertainty as to the source of MTBE.
