Samples collected during February 1982, through May 1984, were analyzed for cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc and during February 1982, through March 1983, for chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides, pthalate ester plasticizers, and polychlorinated biphenyls. Deposition rates were computed. Data reported by the NADP (National Atmospheric Deposition Program) was used to evaluate the general chemical quality of the precipitation. The precipitation had relatively high concentrations of hydrogen ions, sulfate, and nitrate, compared to other constituents. Of the trace metals included for analysis, only copper, lead, and zinc were consistently detected. Lead concentrations exceeded the U.S. EPA recommended limit for domestic water supply in three samples. High deposition rates for some of the metals were episodic. Alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane was the only organic compound that was consistently detected (maximum 120 nanograms/L). None of the other organic compounds were detected in any of the samples. The only perennial stream in the area, the southward-flowing Rio Grande, approximately bisects the basin. Groundwater is the only source used to obtain drinking-water supplies. The basin 's population increased more than 100% from 1960 to 1980. In 1980, 72% of the population was concentrated in the north-central part of the basin in and around the city of Albuquerque. Increases in population caused increases in water demand and groundwater pumpage. A network of wells was selected between April 1982 and September 1983 to monitor changes in groundwater levels. Concentrations ranging from 200 to 300 micrograms per liter in the Madison River near the park boundary are diluted downstream by tributary inflows to the Madison and Missouri Rivers. However, significant amount of arsenic are present in the water of the Missouri River as it enter Fort Peck Lake. A monitoring network of 24 stations was operated during 1985 and 1986 in the upper Missouri River basin to measure arsenic concentrations and arsenic discharges. Additional monitoring at nine stations was conducted during March to July 1987 to supplement the data base. This report presents data acquired from the 1987 monitoring period. A transitional interface exists between the freshwater zone and the downdip, salinewater zone. A 1,000 mg/L (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids-concentration contour defines an arbitrary boundary -between the freshwater zone and the salinewater zone. Locally, the 1,000&nbsp;mg/L dissolved solids-concentration contour is referred to as the \"bad-water\" line. Salinewater intrusion into the freshwater zone is hydraulically possible. Lower than-average water levels in the Edwards aquifer could reverse hydraulic gradients and cause intrusion. Drought conditions, lower-than-average recharge, and increased ground-water withdrawals are factors which lower ground-water levels.</p>\n<p>The purpose of this study is to assess the potential for salinewater intrusion into the freshwater zone. The purpose of this report is to present hydrogeologic data collected during the test drilling and initial testing phase of the study. Information regarding flow tests, water quality, geophysical logs, and lithology are provided in this report. Sensitivities were derived by direct differentiation of closed form solutions for each of the odel, and by a time integral method for two of the models. Models are based on the advection-dispersion equation and include adsorption and first-order chemical decay. Boundary conditions considered are: a constant step input of solute, constant flux input of solute, and exponentially decaying input of solute at the upstream boundary. A zero flux is assumed at the downstream boundary. Initial conditions include a constant and spatially varying distribution of solute. One model simulates the mixing of solute in an observation well from individual layers in a multilayer aquifer system. Computer programs produce output files compatible with graphics software in which sensitivities are plotted as a function of either time or space. ILWAS was established in 1977 to determine why these lakes differ in pH when all receive equal amounts of acidic atmospheric deposition. Woods Lake is acidic (pH ranges from 4 to 5), Panther Lake is neutral (pH ranges from 5 to 7.5), and Sagamore Lake is intermediate (pH ranges from 5 to 6). The data tabulated herein include discharge at the three lake outlets and in a tributary to each lake; lake-water stage at each lake; chemical quality of lake water, including total concentrations of zinc, iron, manganese, and lead, at each lake outlet and at Lost Brook (a tributary to Sagamore Lake); groundwater stage from 29 wells; major ion concentrations of groundwater from 22 of these wells; temperature of soil from three depths at one site in each watershed; soil-moisture tension at three depths at eight sites - four in the neutral-lake basin, three in the acidic-lake basin , and one in the intermediate-lake basin; and average snowpack depths and water equivalents at approximately 20 snow-course sites in each basin for three sampling periods during the 1979-80 winter.
