The U.S. Geological Survey National Computer Technology Meetings (NCTM) are sponsored by the Water Resources Division and provide a forum for the presentation of technical papers and the sharing of ideas or experiences related to computer technology. This report serves as a proceedings of the meeting held in November, 1988 at the Crescent Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. The meeting was attended by more than 200 technical and managerial people representing all Divisions of the U.S. Geological Survey.
Scientists in every Division of the U.S. Geological Survey rely heavily upon state-of-the-art computer technology (both hardware and sofnuare). Today the goals of each Division are pursued in an environment where high speed computers, distributed communications, distributed data bases, high technology input/output devices, and very sophisticated simulation tools are used regularly. Therefore, information transfer and the sharing of advances in technology are very important issues that must be addressed regularly.
This report contains complete papers and abstracts of papers that were presented at the 1988 NCTM. The report is divided into topical sections that reflect common areas of interest and application. In each section, papers are presented first followed by abstracts. For these proceedings, the publication of a complete paper or only an abstract was at the discretion of the author, although complete papers were encouraged.
Some papers presented at the 1988 NCTM are not published in these proceedings.

This information is critically needed to develop an understanding of the Nation's major ground-water flow systems and to support better management of ground-water resources.
As of May 1991, 28 of the Nation's major aquifer systems have been identified for study under this program. Of these, 17 regional aquifer-system studies have been completed, and 8 studies are ongoing. Starting in 1988, the program devoted part of its resources to compilation of a Nationwide ground-water atlas that presents a comprehensive summary of the Nation's major ground-water resources. The atlas, which is designed in a graphical format supported by descriptive text, will serve as a basic reference for the location, geography, geology, and hydrologic characteristics of the major aquifers in the Nation.
This bibliography lists the published 876 reports resulting from various studies of the program, from 1978 through May 1991. The list of reports for each study is placed after a brief description of that study.

The north Kasei Valles area (fig. 1) merits detailed geologic study because it contains part of a large channel system whose age can be determined relative to geologic units that range in age from early intermediate (Early Hesperian) to the very late (Late Amazonian) periods of Martian history. Also, many geomorphic features in the map area suggest changes in water level and multiple erosional events associated with the Kasei Valles system. Later erosional events are indicative of spring sapping; small-scale, ground-water runoff; and water-mobilized debris flow. Therefore, this large-scale mapping has increased our understanding of the history of hydrologic processes on Mars (Chapman and Scott, 1989). For these reasons, part of the area is a candidate site for a sample-return mission to the planet.

The precratonic evolution of the district began with the deposition of a tholeiitic mafic volcanic and volcaniclastic sequence that was intruded by diabase and gabbro. Basaltic to rhyodacitic volcanism following a calc-alkaline evolutionary trend ensued. Subsequent deposition of a thick wacke and sandstone unit represented the final phase in the volcano sedimentary accumulation. The emplacement of a large lopolithic layered-gabbro complex marked the end of the precratonic evolutionary cycle. The district coincides with the boundary of two allochthonous terranes. The collisional Nabitah orogeny represents the suturing of the two terranes. The effects of this event are manifested by numerous north-trending, steeply dipping faults, shear zones, and mylonite belts, as well as diapiric serpentinite. During the waning stages of the orogeny, auriferous quartz pods were precipitated in dilatant structures within the north-trending shear zones by deep-seated circulating fluids. The emplacement of a tonalite stock was closely followed by the formation of N. 20°-35° W. -trending faults. These faults influenced the emplacement of dacite porphyry stocks and associated auriferous quartz veins. The auriferous veins are massive, tabular open-fracture fillings that are spatially, temporally, and genetically related to the dacite porphyry. The emplacement of a quartz monzodiorite stock was responsible for additional auriferous quartz vein mineralization that is almost exclusively hosted by the intrusion. A nearly random orientation of the veins indicates that no regional structure influenced their formation. The formation of a series of N. 60°-80° W -trending faults represents the final episode in the district's geologic history and corresponds to the cratonic reactivation that affected a large part of the Arabian Shield (that is, the Najd faulting event).

The survey was a component study of the Illinois pilot project of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment program. Most of the sampling sites were randomly chosen--135 on main stems of rivers and 238 on first- and second-order streams. In addition, 196 samples were collected for quality-assurance and special-study purposes. The report includes element concentration data and summary-statistics tables of percentiles, nested analysis of variance, and correlation coefficients. The Ozark aquifer is the largest of three aquifers that form part of the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system. The aquifer was studied as part of the Central Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (CMRASA; Jorgensen and Signor, 1981), a study of regional aquifer systems in the midcontinent United States that includes parts of 10States. Because of its significance as a source of freshwater in parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, a subregional project was established to investigate the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system in more detail than the regional study could provide.
The geologic and hydrologic relation between the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system and other regional aquifer systems of the Midwest is presented in Jorgensen and others (in press). The relation of the Ozark aquifer to the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system is explained in Imes [in press (a)]. A companion publication, Imes [1990 (b)], contains contour maps of the altitude of the top, thickness, and potentiometric surface of the Ozark aquifer. This report contains maps that show water type and concentrations of dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate in water from the Ozark aquifer. Most of the data from which these maps are compiled is stored in the CMRASA hydrochemical data base (R.B. Leonard, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 1986). Data for Oklahoma were also taken from data published by Havens (1978). The maps in this report on the Ozark subregion may contain small differences from maps in other CMRASA publications because the criteria for data selection may be different and the subregional maps may contain additional data. However, regional trends in these maps are consistent with other maps published as part of the regional project.
