The digital files that represent a geologic map can be used to prepare near-publication-quality color plots of the maps with full symbology or to create high-quality printing negatives. Marsh Creek valley is underlain by up to 100 feet of stratified drift that overlies Devonian bedrock. The stratified drift is overlain by up to 30 feet of alluvial-fan deposits near the tributary streams.\n\n      Four of the five tributary streams lose large amounts of water to the stratified-drift aquifer in Marsh Creek valley. Along reaches away from the valley wall, infiltration losses from the streams averaged about 2 cubic feet per second per 1,000 feet of wetted channel length. Estimated hydraulic conductivity of the deposits near these streams ranges from 31 to 100 feet per day and averages 61 feet per day. Silty beds of lower permeability near the streams may significantly affect infiltration. The low permeability of the sediments near the fifth stream, which probably consist largely of fine-grained alluvium and swamp deposits, may account for the lack of infiltration losses along this stream.\n\n      Tributary-stream infiltration accounted for more than 70 percent of the estimated recharge to the stratified-drift aquifer along the reach investigated during water year 1985, in which annual precipitation was below average. The sources of recharge and their estimated rates were: (1) direct infiltration of precipitation on the valley, 1.7 cubic feet per second; (2) unchanneled runoff and ground-water inflow from the uplands, 2.7 cubic feet per second; and (3) tributary-stream infiltration from Asaph Run, 3.7 cubic feet per second, Straight Run, 3.7 cubic feet per second, Dantz Run, 1.2 cubic feet per second, and Canada Run, 1.9 cubic feet per second. The precratonic evolution of the district began with the deposition of a tholeiitic mafic volcanic and volcaniclastic sequence that was intruded by diabase and gabbro. Basaltic to rhyodacitic volcanism following a calc-alkaline evolutionary trend ensued. Subsequent deposition of a thick wacke and sandstone unit represented the final phase in the volcano sedimentary accumulation. The emplacement of a large lopolithic layered-gabbro complex marked the end of the precratonic evolutionary cycle. The district coincides with the boundary of two allochthonous terranes. The collisional Nabitah orogeny represents the suturing of the two terranes. The effects of this event are manifested by numerous north-trending, steeply dipping faults, shear zones, and mylonite belts, as well as diapiric serpentinite. During the waning stages of the orogeny, auriferous quartz pods were precipitated in dilatant structures within the north-trending shear zones by deep-seated circulating fluids. The emplacement of a tonalite stock was closely followed by the formation of N.&nbsp;20&deg;-35&deg;&nbsp;W. -trending faults. These faults influenced the emplacement of dacite porphyry stocks and associated auriferous quartz veins. The auriferous veins are massive, tabular open-fracture fillings that are spatially, temporally, and genetically related to the dacite porphyry. The emplacement of a quartz monzodiorite stock was responsible for additional auriferous quartz vein mineralization that is almost exclusively hosted by the intrusion. A nearly random orientation of the veins indicates that no regional structure influenced their formation. The Quaternary Geologic Map of the Blue Ridge 4&deg; x 6&deg; Quadrangle was mapped as part of the Quaternary Geologic Atlas of the United States. The atlas was begun as an effort to depict the areal distribution of surficial geologic deposits and other materials that accumulated or formed during the past 2+ million years, the period that includes all activities of the human species. These materials are at the surface of the earth. They make up the \"ground\" on which we walk, the \"dirt\" in which we dig foundations, and the \"soil\" in which we grow crops. Most of our human activity is related in one way or another to these surface materials that are referred to collectively by many geologists as that overlies the bedrock foundation of the continent. The study area is mostly within the unglaciated part of eastern Ohio along the western edge of the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province. The 1987-88 work is the second phase of a 7-year study to assess baseline water quality in Ohio's coal region.\r\n\r\nThe data collection network consisted of 41 long-term surface-water sites in 21 basins. The sites were measured and sampled twice yearly at low flow. In addition, six individual basins (three each year) selected for a more detailed representation of surface-water and ground-water quality. In 1987, the Sandy Creek, Middle Tuscarawas River and Sugar Creek, and Lower Tuscarawas River basins were chosen. In 1988, the Short and Wheeling Creeks, Upper Wills Creek, and Upper Raccoon Creek basins were chosen.\r\n\r\nBecause of their proximity to the glaciated region and outwash drainage, the basins studied intensively in 1987 contain more shallow productive aquifers than do the basins studied in detail for 1988, in which shallow ground-water sources are very localized.\r\n\r\nChemical analyses for 202 surface-water and 24 ground-water samples are presented. For field measurements made at surface-water sites, the specific conductance ranged from 295 to 3150 ? S/cm (microsiemens per centimeter at 25 degrees Celsius). For pH, the range was 2.8 to 8.6.
