This report presents a compilation and summary of data related to the interchange of water between the Edwards aquifer and streams, and to the hydraulics of vertical movement of water in the Georgetown Limestone in the Georgetown area of Williamson County. It presents hydrologic, geologic, hydraulic, physical, geophysical, and water-quality data collected from selected wells and stream sites in the study area from January 1986 to June 1987. Included are the results from six streamflow gain and loss surveys, two ground-water-level surveys representing low and high water-level conditions, inorganic chemical analyses of water from selected wells and streams, and bulk specific gravity and permeability tests of cores taken at three test-well sites. Water-level altitudes differed by an average of 38 feet between low and high water-level conditions in the confined zone, and by an average of 13 feet in the unconfined zone. Dissolved solids of water from selected wells ranged from 320 to 1,300 milligrams per liter and from 251 to 290 milligrams per liter in water from selected streams.

The analysis resulted in maps that show radiometric map units and gamma-ray anomalies indicating the presence of possible concentrations of potassium and uranium. The radiometric-unit map was interpreted to 'produce a simplified radiolithic map that was correlated with the mapped geology. The gamma-ray data show uranium anomalies that coincide with a tin-bearing granite, but known gold and nickel mineralization do not have any associated gamma-ray signatures.

Water quality samples (747 inorganic and 168 organic) were collected at 20 surface water sites and 53 monitoring wells at four selected landfills from 1980 to 1986. Samples were analyzed for 142 selected physical and biological parameters, major ions, nutrients, trace metals, and (or) organic compounds. Results from all analyses are presented in tabular form in the appendices. Each appendix is divided into a surface water and a groundwater section. Within each water quality table the data is presented in the following order: field measurements, physical properties, biological constituents (if analyzed), major cations, major anions, dissolved and integrate and replace its existing water data and information systems of the National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System, National Water Data Exchange, National Water-Use Information, and Water Resources Scientific Information Center programs. It will be a distributed data system operated as part of the Division 's Distributed Information System, which is a network of computers linked together through a national telecommunication network known as GEONET. The NWIS is being developed as a series of prototypes that will be integrated as they are completed to allow the development and implementation of the system in a phased manner. It also is being developed in a distributed manner using personnel who work under the coordination of a central NWIS Project Office. Work on the development of the NWIS began in 1983 and it is scheduled for completion in 1990. This document presents an overall plan for the design, development, implementation, and operation of the system. Detailed discussions are presented on each of these phases of the NWIS life cycle. The planning, quality assurance, and configuration management phases of the life cycle also are discussed. The plan is intended to be a working document for use by NWIS management and participants in its design and development and to assist offices of the Division in planning and preparing for installation and operation of the system. During May 15-19, 1985, as much as 25 in. of rainfall produced significant floods along north and north-central basins in the island. A nearly stationary tropical depression affected Puerto Rico during October 5-8, 1985, resulting in 24-hr precipitation totals of as much as 23 in. and severe floods along the south-central coastal areas. During the May 17-18, 1985 event, the areas most seriously affected by flooding were along the north coast. These included the lower reaches of the Rio Grande de Manati and the Rio Grande de Arecibo. Significant flooding also occurred at Utuado and Jayuya. The recurrence interval of most of the flood peaks was generally < 25 yr. The floods of October 6-7, 1985, affected mostly rural areas in southern Puerto Rico, but caused significant loss of life and widespread property damages. Landslides near Ponce, the collapse of a bridge at Rio Coamo, and the destruction of homes near Ponce resulted in about 170 fatalities and > 125 million dollars in damages. Flooding was also severe at Barceloneta on the north coast. Recurrence intervals = or > 100 yr were estimated for peak discharges at several index stations. The storms ocurred in rapid succession over the area, and the rain fell on ground that was near saturation from greater-than-normal precipitation during April and May. Flooding ocurred in the Loup River, Blue River, Platte River, Elkhorn River, and Weeping Water Creek basins in Nebraska and the James River, Vermillion River, and Big Sioux river basins in South Dakota. Record and near-record peak discharges occurred on many streams. The floodflows from tributary streams caused the highest stages and the most widespread flooding along the Missouri River from Sioux City, Iowa, to Rulo, Nebraska, since April 1952. Late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic rocks of the Jibalah Group crop out in the southwestern part of the quadrangle. Paleozoic and younger units are limited to the early Paleozoic Siq Sandstone that crops out in the northwestern part of the quadrangle and small outcrops of Cenozoic basalt and unconsolidated Quaternary sediments.
\nThe Hulayfah group, dated at older than 738 Ma, is the oldest volcano-sedimentary unit in the quadrangle and consists of metamorphosed basaltic to andesitic volcanic and subvolcanic rock, and interbedded limestone, sandstone, and silicic volcanic rock. The Maraghan formation is composed of strongly folded, fine-grained sedimentary rock that was deposited between 677 and 621 Ma. The Hadn and Hibshi formations are composed of rhyolitic to rhyodacitic volcanic rock and interbedded continental sedimentary rock that were deposited between 651 and 600 Ma, but are inferred to postdate the Maraghan formation because they are significantly less deformed. Andesitic flows and volcanic breccia in the southeast corner of the quadrangle are mapped as the Jurdhawiyah group; these rocks unconformably overlie the Maraghan formation. The Zarghat formation is a thick sequence of interbedded sedimentary rock and silicic volcanic rock, and unconformably overlies the Hadn formation. It is inferred to have been deposited between 600 and 580 Ma.
\nThe Precambrian igneous rocks are organized into four tentative magmatic episodes. Greenstone of the Hulayfah group and dioritic intrusive rocks represent the oldest episode, and are believed to have formed in an ensimatic magmatic arc environment. These rocks were intruded during a second magmatic episode by post-Hulayfah monzogranite and granodiorite. A still younger, post-Hadn magmatic episode is represented by alkali-feldspar granite and syenogranite. The most recent magmatic episode is represented by small diabase and gabbro intrusions that are inferred to have been emplaced during a period of crustal rifting coincident with the deposition of the Jibalah group.
\nThe magnesite deposit near the village of Zarghat is the most significant mineral deposit in the quadrangle. However, the Hulayfah group has the most potential for metallic deposits in the area as it contains numerous gossans and ancient mine workings.

The preprocessor program: (1) generates a triangular finite element mesh from minimal data input, (2) produces graphical displays and tabulations of data for the mesh , and (3) prepares an input data file to use with the radial-flow model. The postprocessor program is a version of the radial-flow model, which was modified to (1) produce graphical output for simulation and field results, (2) generate a statistic for comparing the simulation results with observed data, and (3) allow hydrologic properties to vary in the simulated region. Examples of the use of the processor programs for a hypothetical aquifer test are presented. Instructions for the data files, format instructions, and a listing of the preprocessor and postprocessor source codes are given in the appendixes.
