In addition, two new prospects were studied.\r\n\r\nThe Nelson fault block is cut by many dominantly strike-slip faults of small displacement, and by bedding faults. Slickensided chalcocite shows post-mineral movement, and chalcocite veinlet in a filled solution cavity indicates that some of the chalcocite is secondary, perhaps very recent. Structural relations indicate two overthrust faults cut the block.\r\n\r\nThe Radovan \u001CGreenstone\u001D prospect shows massive chalcocite, up to 3 feet wide, in a silicified, epidotized fault zone in the Nikolai greenstone. Ore indicated by surface exposures may amount to 450 tons of chalcocite.\r\n\r\nThe Radovan \u001CLow-Contact\u001D prospect is on a continuation of the same fault approximately 3 miles southwest of the Greenstone prospect, and 150 feet above the contact of the Nikolai greenstone and the overlying Chitistone limestone. Limonite staining is widespread in bedding planes and small faults near the fault zone; mineralization in the fault zone consists of pyrite, chalcocite, bornite, malachite, realgar, orpiment and stibnite. The sulphides in the fault zone, plus the widespread silicification and epidotization indicate a strong zone of hydrothermal activity which merits extensive prospecting.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr52134","usgsCitation":"Sainsbury, C., 1952, Preliminary report on the Nelson and Radovan copper prospects, Nizina district, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 52-134, 20 p. :4 maps (2 folded) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr52134.","productDescription":"20 p. :4 maps (2 folded) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148936,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0134/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44768,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0134/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db6274c3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sainsbury, C.J.","contributorId":94679,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sainsbury","given":"C.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

As part of this program, heavy-mineral samples were prepared from cores of the test wells and core holes and studied to determine stratigraphic correlations. Using the following criteria: (1) presence of diagnostic minerals or mineral suites; (2) relative abundance of specific minerals; (3) degree of rounding of mineral grains; (4) distinction as to grain form; eight heavy-mineral zones have been recognized in Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary sedimentary rocks. A short statement on previous knowledge and investigation of radioactive materials in the Territory is also given. The review of data and appraisal for the Seward Peninsula-Jobuk, Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim, Upper Yukon, Alaska Railroad-Iliamna, and southeastern Alaska regions are essentially complete. Those of the Copper River, Gulf of Alaska, Aleutian and northern Alaska regions are not yet complete. A more detailed presentation of these latter regions will be made in the final report.\r\n\r\nThe appraisals are based on known occurrences of radioactive materials and geologic criteria that suggest the presence of uranium. Review of published and unpublished data to date shows that the Seward Peninsula-Kobuk region and southeastern Alaska followed by the Alaska Railroad, Gulf of Alaska and Lower Yukon-Kuskokwim regions are perhaps the more promising regions of the Territory for the occurrence of high-grade uranium ores.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr52165","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., White, M., and Moxham, R.M., 1952, Interim report on an appraisal of the uranium possibilities of Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 52-165, 124 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr52165.","productDescription":"124 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":178306,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86475,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86476,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86477,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86478,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86479,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86480,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86481,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86482,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86483,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86484,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86485,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86486,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86487,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86488,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86489,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1952/0165/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dbe4b07f02db5e09bd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth","contributorId":67495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243134,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, Max G.","contributorId":22426,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Max G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243132,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Moxham, Robert M.","contributorId":56210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243133,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Katmai and related volcanic action in 1912. The principal deposits in the coastal areas of the Monument occur in the valley of the Katmai River and in the Amalik Bay-Kukak Bay area.\r\n\r\nSeveral areas of pumice deposition have been found on the south and west sides of Augustine Island, located 200 miles southwest of Anchorage. Mining was carried on by the Alaska Katmalite Corporation during the period 1946-1949, but no production has taken place since that time.\r\n\r\nPumice deposits found in the Aniakchak-Veniaminof area have probably been derived from three principal sources: Aniakchak Crater, Mt. Spectrograms have been made of 10 of them. The&nbsp;</span>rocks<span>&nbsp;from&nbsp;</span>Adak<span>&nbsp;represent one center of possibly older&nbsp;</span>Tertiary<span>&nbsp;age and two centers of younger&nbsp;</span>Tertiary<span>&nbsp;or&nbsp;</span>Quaternary<span>&nbsp;age. The&nbsp;</span>rocks<span>&nbsp;from&nbsp;</span>Kanaga<span>&nbsp;</span>Island<span>&nbsp;represent both a shield volcano of possibly&nbsp;</span>Tertiary<span>&nbsp;age, partly destroyed by the formation of a caldera, and a young cone of&nbsp;</span>Quaternary<span>&nbsp;age that has grown within the caldera. All the&nbsp;</span>rocks<span>&nbsp;are basalt or andesite. Modally, all are characterized by relatively large crystals of plagioclase more calcic than andesine, and by one or more of the following ferromagnesian minerals: olivine, hypersthene, augite, and hornblende. Apatite and iron ores are common, and late silica minerals and orthoclase occur interstitially&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;the groundmasses of some&nbsp;</span>rocks<span>. As analyses of no more than four samples are available for each center, the small differences between sets of analyses representing different centers are of doubtful significance. Consequently, the analyses representing all the centers have been plotted on each of the several diagrams used. The several types of variation diagrams show that the province is a calc-alkaline one. The alkali-lime index is&nbsp;</span>in<span>&nbsp;the neighborhood of 63. This very high value is comparable with that for Katmai and is only slightly less than the maximum for the Japanese&nbsp;</span>volcanic<span>&nbsp;</span>rock<span>&nbsp;series. The quantities of minor constituents present are not exceptional for the&nbsp;</span>rock<span>&nbsp;types analyzed; the&nbsp;</span>rocks<span>&nbsp;from&nbsp;</span>Adak<span>&nbsp;are apparently more strontium-rich than those from&nbsp;</span>Kanaga<span>. The chemical analyses of the more basic&nbsp;</span>rock<span>&nbsp;types, as compared with the average analysis of plateau basalt, suggest that the&nbsp;</span>Aleutian<span>&nbsp;parental magma could have been derived from a plateau basalt magma by the addition of plagioclase and the subtraction of pyroxene, iron ore, and some quartz. Extensive erosion surfaces were developed prior to glaciation, such as the Alberta Plateau of northeastern&nbsp;</span>British<span>&nbsp;</span>Columbia<span>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;</span>Yukon<span>&nbsp;Plateau in southern&nbsp;</span>Yukon<span>. In the region from Dawson Creek to Fort Nelson,&nbsp;</span>British<span>&nbsp;</span>Columbia<span>, the drift is dominantly a slightly weathered bouldery clay till of Wisconsin age, deposited by ice that came from the east. In the&nbsp;</span>northern<span>&nbsp;Rocky Mountains, the last eastward advance of the Wisconsin glaciers to the mountain front preceded the maximum westward advance of the ice sheets. In the foothills belt west of the&nbsp;</span>Highway<span>, the tills of these two advances are separated by lake deposits. Much of the drift is probably pre-Altamont in age and was subjected to vigorous&nbsp;</span>frost<span>&nbsp;action during the Altamont substage. The climate ameliorated perhaps with the advent of the post-glacial optimum and possibly coincident with the development of prairies. A recent change from prairie to forest perhaps indicates a slight cooling in recent time. In the&nbsp;</span>northern<span>&nbsp;Rocky Mountains, four substages of Wisconsin glaciation are recognized tentatively on the basis of morainal deposits and outwash terraces. The upper Liard basin is characterized by extensive pitted outwash plains, probably of&nbsp;</span>late<span>&nbsp;Wisconsin age. From Teslin Lake to Whitehorse, the&nbsp;</span>Highway<span>&nbsp;is bordered by extensive terraces of gravel and sand deposited in ice-marginal streams and lakes. Intensive&nbsp;</span>frost<span>&nbsp;action has modified pre-existing land forms and has produced a wide variety of features, such as talus, blockfields, stone rings, stone stripes, and terraces. Long smooth slopes, chiefly due to mass movements such as solifluction, are characteristic of the landscapes. These slopes and ancient soil structures extend down into forested areas and probably developed prior to the advent of forests, doubtless prior to the post-glacial optimum.&nbsp;</span>Phenomena<span>&nbsp;resulting from intensive&nbsp;</span>frost<span>&nbsp;action at the present time are restricted largely to areas above timber line.&nbsp;</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1952)63[883:LQGAFP]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Denny, C.S., 1952, Late quaternary geology and frost phenomena along Alaska Highway, Northern British Columbia and Southeastern Yukon: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 63, no. 9, p. 883-922, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1952)63[883:LQGAFP]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"40 p.","startPage":"883","endPage":"922","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386735,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States, Canada","state":"Alaska, Yukon, British Columbia","otherGeospatial":"Alaska Highway","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -139.04296875,\n              61.95961583829658\n            ],\n            [\n              -144.404296875,\n              63.58767529470318\n            ],\n            [\n              -147.5244140625,\n              60.951776809566965\n            ],\n            [\n              -143.7451171875,\n              59.977005492196\n            ],\n            [\n              -135.2197265625,\n              56.559482483762245\n            ],\n            [\n              -131.9677734375,\n              54.67383096593114\n            ],\n            [\n              -129.1552734375,\n              57.040729838360875\n            ],\n            [\n              -128.5400390625,\n              58.401711667608\n            ],\n            [\n              -139.04296875,\n              61.95961583829658\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"63","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Denny, Charles Storrow","contributorId":86331,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Denny","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Storrow","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":818261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

While the inter-mound furrow networks characteristic of&nbsp;</span>pimpled<span>&nbsp;</span>plains<span>&nbsp;in the mid-continent region may owe their origin to former frigid climatic conditions, one of a number of alternative possibilities is that the peculiar configuration of these surfaces, as exemplified in&nbsp;</span>eastern<span>&nbsp;</span>Oklahoma<span>, has resulted from erosion of systems of giant soil polygons caused by desiccation. The time of origin of the&nbsp;</span>pimpled<span>&nbsp;</span>plains<span>&nbsp;of&nbsp;</span>eastern<span>&nbsp;</span>Oklahoma<span>&nbsp;is believed to have been not earlier than late Pleistocene.&nbsp;</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1952)63[689:PPOEO]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Knechtel, M., 1952, Pimpled plains of Eastern Oklahoma: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 63, no. 7, p. 689-700, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1952)63[689:PPOEO]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"689","endPage":"700","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386728,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Eastern Oklahoma","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.12988281249999,\n              35.209721645221386\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.74609374999999,\n              35.209721645221386\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.74609374999999,\n              36.94989178681327\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.12988281249999,\n              36.94989178681327\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.12988281249999,\n              35.209721645221386\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"63","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knechtel, M. At these localities the thorium occurs as a major constituent or in minor amounts as an impurity in one or more of the following 12 minerals: allanite, columbite, ellsworthite, eschynite, gummite, monazite, orangite, parisite, thorianite, thorite, xenotime, and zircon.  In addition other minerals, such as biotite and sphene, are radioactive and may contain thorium.  Several unidentified columbate minerals with uranium or thorium and uranium as major constituents have been recognized at some localities.  The distribution, by type of deposit, of the 57 thorium occurrences is as follows: lode - 3, lode and placer - 1, granitic rock - 3, granitic rock and related placer - 14, and placer - 26.  Of the four lode occurrences only the radioactive veins at Salmon Bay in southeastern Alaska and the contact metamorphic deposit in the Nixon Fork area of central Alaska warrant further consideration, although insufficient data are available to determine whether these two deposits have commercial possibilities.  The remaining occurrences of thorium-bearing minerals in Alaska are limited to placer deposits and disseminations of accessory minerals in granitic rocks.  In most of these occurrences the thorium-bearing minerals occur in only trace amounts and consequently warrent little further consideration. More data are needed to determine the possibilities of byproduct recovery of thorium-bearing minerals from several of the gold and tin placers.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem339","collaboration":"This reports concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Bates, R., and Wedow, H., 1952, Preliminary summary review of thorium-bearing mineral occurrences in Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 339, Report: 28 p.; 1 Plate: 19.61 x 15.26 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem339.","productDescription":"Report: 28 p.; 1 Plate: 19.61 x 15.26 inches","numberOfPages":"30","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277878,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0339/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283103,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0339/report.pdf"},{"id":283104,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0339/plate-1.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 172.45,51.21 ], [ 172.45,71.39 ], [ -129.99,71.39 ], [ -129.99,51.21 ], [ 172.45,51.21 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523c1cf8e4b024b60d407375","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bates, Robert G.","contributorId":102867,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bates","given":"Robert G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484242,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth Jr.","contributorId":14374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":484241,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The samples were given to the Geological Survey by prospectors operating in the area operating in the area.  The heavy-mineral fractions from the concentrates average 0.044 percent equivalent uranium.  Three minerals, all members of the zircon group, contain the radioactive material in the sample; one mineral is uranium-bearing, the other two are thorium-bearing. Unless the concentration of radioactive minerals in the beach deposits is considerably higher than the present qualitative data indicate, the placers at Yakataga beach do not constitute a feasible source of supply of radioactive materials.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tem326","collaboration":"The report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R.M., 1952, Radioactive minerals in the Yakataga beach placers, southern Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Memorandum 326, Report: 10 p.; 1 Plate: 16.37 x 14.87 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tem326.","productDescription":"Report: 10 p.; 1 Plate: 16.37 x 14.87 inches","numberOfPages":"13","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277561,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0326/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":283097,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0326/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":283098,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tem/0326/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Yakataga Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -142.7101,59.856 ], [ -142.7101,60.278 ], [ -140.8975,60.278 ], [ -140.8975,59.856 ], [ -142.7101,59.856 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"523433f0e4b0b9e9b3336db7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, Robert M.","contributorId":56210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483917,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
