This report contains records of water discharge at 71 gaging stations; stage records for 18 of these gaging stations; stage only at 5 gaging stations; water quality for 13 stations, 2 precipitation quality stations, and 263 wells; and water levels for 629 observation wells. Also included are peak-discharge data for 58 crest-stage partial-record stations and water quality data at 106 partial-record or miscellaneous sites. Locations of these sites are shown on Figures 3-5. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part of the systematic data collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in The ability of the main channel along with the existing agricultural levee to contain the flow of the Kansas River, the effect of overflow structures under the highway south of the bridge, and the effect of an island upstream from the proposed bridge are discussed. The design of the proposed new bridge is adequate for passage of a 100-yr flood of 155,000 cu ft/sec; however, the existing levee along the right bank of the river upstream of the proposed bridge will not confine the flow to the main channel because parts of the levee have been broken or removed. The present overflow structures would allow a discharge of 26,000 cu ft/sec to occur in the bypass reach with a maximum depth of flow over the highway of 1.3 ft. If the structures were removed but the highway grade maintained, the discharge would increase to about 30,000 cu ft/sec with a depth of flow over the highway of 1.5 ft. If the overflow structures were removed and the elevated sections of the highway grade leveled, the discharge would increase to about 31,500 cu ft/sec, with a maximum depth of flow over the highway of 1.3 ft. The velocity of flow through four 30-in diameter concrete culverts located at overflow structure sites would be 8.6 ft/sec. Foreseeable changes in the island upstream from the proposed bridge would not interfere with the flow capacity of the new bridge. The dated plutons range widely in terms of degree of petrologic evolution from primitive (at Najran) to highly evolved (at Jabal al Caharra) and include several plutons that are anomalously enriched in tin and tungsten (Jabal Tarban, Jabal al Gaharra, Jabal Khinzir, and Jabal Minya). Although no uniform relationship was established between age or initial <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr and degree of petrologic evolution, the more evolved plutons tend to be younger and to have slightly higher initial <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr values. There is a tendency for metalliferous plutons to have elevated initial <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr values, but not all plutons with elevated <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr values are known to be metalliferous. Several of the dated plutons are situated within the Najd fault zone, and thus, some of the ages are useful in determining times of strike-slip fault activity. The youngest pluton cut by Najd faulting is at Jabal Tukhfah (573&plusmn;13 Ma). Displacement at this locality is about 2 km, and if normal rates of strike-slip movement are assumed, this displacement suggests that movement for one strand of the Najd faults ceased by about 560 Ma.</p>\n<p>Available data indicate that postorogenic granites tend to be older in the southern part of the Arabian Shield. This suggests that plutonism started in the south and progressed to the north. Initial <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr values also form a regional pattern. These ratios tend to be higher in the eastern part of the Arabian Shield, and suggest one source of continental affinity to the east and one of oceanic affinity to the west. S. Geological Survey that show earthquake data of individual states or groups of states at the scale of 1:1,000,000. This map shows only those earthquakes with epicenters located within the boundaries of Indiana, even though earthquakes in nearby states may have been felt or may have caused damage in Indiana.</p>\n<p>The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map; these data are a corrected, expanded, and updated (through 1983) version of the data used by Algermissen (1969) for a study of seismic risk in the United States. The locations and intensities of some earthquakes were revised and intensities were assigned where none had been before. Many earthquakes were added to the original list from new data sources as well as from some old data sources that had not been previously used. The data in table 1 represent best estimates of the location of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.</p>\n<p>The latitude and longitude coordinates of each epicenter were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped and counted. These locations are represented on the map by a triangle. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the arabic number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of all earthquakes at that geographic location. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. This is underlain by less permeable crystalline rock that limits the downward movement of water. Up to 5 feet of Holocene (or perhaps Pleistocene) alluvium consisting of clay and silt was deposited above the Trenton gravel, but much of the surficial material is dredge spoil, mostly sand and silt from the Delaware River.</p>\n<p>Normally, ground water discharges to the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek. However, because the Trenton gravel is confined by the alluvium and is hydraulically connected to the Delaware River throughout its entire thickness due to channel dredging, hydraulic-head variations in the river are readily transmitted to wells. Thus, flow is toward the Delaware River and Neshaminy Creek at low tide, but the river and and creek recharge the aquifer as the tide rises.</p>\n<p>In September 1981 and October 1983, infertile dredge spoil from the Delaware River at Neshaminy State Park was mixed with composted sewage sludge and seeded to grasses to produce a soil product that has not adversely affected ground-water quality as of March 1985. Analyses for pH, specific conductance, nutrients, and heavy metals in ground water at the beginning of the study indicate that the chemistry of the ground water in the dredge spoil at the site differs from that in the Trenton gravel.</p>\n<p>Analyses of ground-water samples collected after the first two sludge applications (120 tons per acre and 450 tons per acre), indicate that no significant change occurred in the chemistry of the samples from the Trenton gravel, whereas organic nitrogen increased temporarily in ground water from the dredge spoil 6 months after the larger of the two sludge applications, but quickly returned to background levels. Average velocity of the lower portion of the glacier, 10 September 1986 to 26 January 1987, was three km/yr, or about one-half of the velocity during similar periods for the previous three years. This reduced velocity is a new development in the progression of the retreat, and if the calving rate follows the pattern of previous years, will result in continued retreat.
