F. Rheams. Additional landslide data from the northern part of the state and from Jefferson County were added by Fred Taylor and E. E. Brabb from reports by Pomeroy (1982), Thomas (1979, 1982), and Szabo and others (1979). The locations of two landslides were provided by the U.S. Forest Service (written commun., 1982), and a few more additional landslide locations were noted by K. F. Rheams in 1981 and by E. E. Brabb in 1982.</p>\n<p>Locations of landslides from the various data sources were transferred to this map by measuring the distance from known landmarks. Substantial differences in scale, differential swelling and shrinking of paper source maps, and other technical problems in transferring the landslide data may have led to errors of as much as one mile in plotting the locations. The landslide locations, therefore, are located only approximately.</p>\n<p>Many more landslides exist in Alabama but have not yet been recognized or recorded in public documents. The absence of a landslide symbol on this map, therefore, does not indicate that an area is necessarily free of landslides. Conversely, the clustering of landslide symbols in an area should not be used to indicate that the area is unsafe, but rather that many landslides have been reported and that investigation of the problem by qualified geologists and engineers is prudent before development takes place.</p>\n<p>This map should be considered preliminary in the sense that a systematic evaluation of all areas in Alabama for landslides using standard photographic interpretation techniques has not yet been done.</p>\n<p>The user of this map is referred to Pomeroy and Thomas (1935) for a discussion of These rocks were systematically studied as part of the Tonopah CUSMAP project. Studies included field mapping, petrographic and modal analyses, geochemical studies of both fresh and altered plutonic rocks and altered wallrocks, and K-Ar and Rb-Sr radiometric dating. Data collected during this study were combined with previously published data to produce a 1:250,000-scale map of the Tonopah quadrangle showing the distribution of individual plutons and an accompanying table summarizing composition, texture, age, and any noted hydrothermal alteration and mineralization effects for each pluton.</p>\n<p>The main areas mapped as part of this study, mapped along with collaborators listed in parentheses, were the Paradise Range (N.J. Silberling), north Cedar Mountain (R.A. Armin), the east side of the Toiyabe Range (G. F. Brem and R. A. Armin), and the south end of the Toquima Range (R.A. Armin). Most mapping was done at a scale of 1:24,000. These maps were combined with previously published maps and other maps of the Tonopah CUSMAP project to produce this pluton map</p>\n<p>The accompanying table includes the name (if any) of the pluton and its location, the age of the pluton (either a radiometric age or an age inferred from field relations), modal composition, texture, mineralogy, hydrothermal alteration and mineralization related to the pluton, the source of mapping shown on this map, and published references on the pluton. Radiometric ages are either published K-Ar and fission track ages or new whole-rock Rb-Sr ages determined by A. C. Robinson on samples collected either for this study or as part of regional Sr-isotope studies by R.W. Kistler and A.C. Robinson. K-Ar ages published prior to 1977 are corrected using the new I.U.C.S. constants (Steiger and Jager, 1977). Muscovite alteration ages are reported for several plutons and represent minimum ages for emplacement of these plutons. Compositional classification follows the T. J. G.S. system (&ldquo;Streckeisen, 1976) and is based either on modal analyses of slabs or estimates from hand specimens. All modes, unless otherwise noted, were measured in this study. The number of modes determined is shown in parentheses, and the range in volume percent of major minerals is given. Where no modal data are available, the color index (percentage of mafic minerals) and major mafic minerals are given for most plutons. Data tabulated on hydrothermal alteration and mineralization related to plutons are based on observations made during field studies for this project. S. Geological Survey that show earthquake data of individual states or groups of states at the scale of 1:1,000,000. This map shows only those earthquakes with epicenters located within the boundaries of North Carolina, even though earthquakes in nearby states may have been felt or may have caused damage in North Carolina.</p>\n<p>The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map; these data are a corrected, expanded, and updated (through 1983) version of the data used by Algermissen (1969) for a study of seismic risk in the United States. The locations and intensities of some earthquakes were revised and intensities were assigned where none had been before. Many earthquakes were added to the original list from new data sources as well as from some old data sources that had not been previously used. The data in table 1 represent best estimates of the location of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.</p>\n<p>The latitude and longitude coordinates of each epicenter were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped and counted. These locations are represented on the map by a triangle. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the arabic number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of a11 earthquakes at that geographic location. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. The quadrangle encompasses an area of about 19,500 km<sup>2</sup> along and to the east of the east flank of the Sierra Nevada (fig. 1).</p><p>The Bouguer gravity anomaly map of the Walker Lake quadrangle was prepared by interpolating gravity values among 3,447 gravity stations established in the quadrangle and additional stations from adjacent quadrangles. An isostatic residual gravity map was prepared in order to reduce the effect; of interfering gravity gradients associated with the isostatic root of the Sierra Nevada. Methods of data reduction and factors that limit the accuracy of the gravity values are discussed in the following sections of this report.</p><p>The geologic interpretation of the gravity maps is based on previous studies, sample measurements, and correlation with other maps of the folio including a geologic map (Stewart and others, 1982) and a map showing Mesozoic plutonic rocks (John, 1983). The purpose of the interpretative part of this report is to demonstrate the correlation between gravity anomalies and the mapped geology, to assess the continuation of exposed geologic units beneath the surface, and to suggest the location of concealed subsurface bodies with mineral resource potential. A three-dimensional model of the Little Walker caldera (fig. 6) is used to illustrate a possible quantitative interpretation of a gravity anomaly. A concealed 25 by 75-km Cenozoic batholith along the east flank of the Sierra Nevada with possible lateral extensions is suggested in this report. A possible magmatic mechanism is discussed to augment contemporary explanations for the extensional origin of valleys. The possibility of lower gravity anomalies indicating thinner roof rocks in the basement beneath mountain ranges also is discussed. Furthermore, interpretation of gravity anomalies was applied in discussions with W.D.
