The Gulf Coast geosyncline and the Mississippi embayment were the major depocenters for the Tertiary and Quaternary deposits that form the framework for the aquifer systems.
\n
FoiiDation of the Gulf Coast geosyncline and the Mississippi embayment began with downwarping and downfaulting at the end of the Paleozoic Era. Sedimentation caused the geosyncline to continue to subside throughout Mesozoic and Cenozoic time. During the Late Cretaceous, at the close of the Mesozoic Era, the sea advanced northward and eventually inundated the Mississippi embayment. Marine cycles persisted throughout the Paleocene and Eocene Epochs of the Tertiary Period, as the sea alternately advanced and retreated over the Mississippi embayment. The resulting sediments form a series of dense marine clays separated by terrigenous sands. The Gulf Coast geosyncline remained submerged during marine regressions in the embayment. After withdrawal of the last Tertiary sea from the Mississippi embayment at the end of the Eocene Epoch, deposition continued along the Gulf Coastal Plain under a shifting variety of nonmarine, marine, near-marine, and deltaic environments. Deposition resumed in the Mississippi embayment during the Quaternary with glacially related terraces and aggradation of streams. Fluvial deposition continues.
\n
Structural features in the Gulf Coastal Plain and Mississippi embayment significantly affected Cenozoic deposition. The Desha basin, for example, is a pronounced Tertiary synclinal depocenter in southeastern Arkansas. Three large uplifts are approximately aligned along the latitude of the northern boundary of Louisiana. These are, from west to east, the Sabine, Monroe, and Jackson uplifts. A belt of three major fault zones, the Luling-Mexia-Talco, Arkansas, and Pickens-Gilbertown, generally follows the strike of sediments across the Coastal Plain and more or less forms the northern updip extent of the Gulf Coast geosyncline. An alternating series of gentle synclines and anticlines is oriented perpendicular to the coastline along the Gulf Coast in Texas. Beginning at the southwestern end, these are the Rio Grande embayment, San Marcos arch, Houston embayment, and Sabine arch. The Wiggins anticline is oriented approximately along strike of the sediments in southern Mississippi. Salt domes are numerous in the Gulf Coastal Plain and may penetrate thousands of feet of sediments. Although the degree of salt intrusion can be very great, disruption of adjacent strata is limited to the vicinity of the dome.
\n
The physiography of the Gulf Coastal Plain is a direct result of the nature of the strata at land surface and physical forces that act upon them. Different terrains typify the lithologies that underlie them. The sands and clays that are the predominant rock types each produce characteristic geomorphologic patterns; sands tend to produce ridges, and clays produce topographic lows.
\n
Although Cenozoic deposits are not uniformly differentiated, interstate correlations of major Paleocene and Eocene units are generally established throughout the area. Younger deposits are not as well differentiated. Some stratigraphic designations made at surface exposures cannot be extended into the sub-surface, and the scarcity of distinct geologic horizons has hampered differentiation on a regional scale. The complexities of facies development in Oligocene and younger coastal deposits preclude the development of extensive recognizable horizons needed for stratigraphic applications. Coastal deposits are a heterogeneous assemblage of deltaic, lagoonal, lacustrine, palustrine, eolian, and fluvial clastic facies and local calcareous reef facies. Even major time boundaries, as between geologic series, are not fully resolved. Surficial Quaternary deposits overlie the truncated subcrops of Tertiary strata and generally are distinguishable, although some contacts between Pleistocene and underlying Pliocene deposits have been a ?lstoncal source of controversy. Glacially related terraces are characteristic of the Pleistocene Epoch, and alluvium of aggrading streams typifies the Holocene.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Near-surface aquifers are defined as those with the top of aquifer material within 50 feet of land surface, regardless of whether the material is saturated or unsaturated. Three hundred wells will be selected for sampling from 12 states. These States include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The reconnaissance data obtained will be used to determine the spatial and seasonal distribution of selected herbicides, two atrazine metabolites, and nitrate in near-surface aquifers in the study region. Hydrologic, geologic, and land-use data will be collected for use in an exploratory statistical analysis to help explain the herbicide distribution.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. The technology includes the many spacially based operations first brought together and developed systematically to manipulate Ranger, Mariner, Landsat, and other images that are reassembled from spacecraft telemetry in a raster or scan-line arrangement of square-grid elements (Nathan, 1966; Castleman, 1979; Sheldon, 1987). These computer procedures have been successfully transferred to landform analysis from remote-sensing applications by substituting terrain heights or sea-floor depths for the customary values of electromagnetic radiation obtained from satellites an stored in digital arrays of pixels (Batson and others, 1975).

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The San Joaquin sedimentary basin is separated from the Sacramento basin to the north by the buried Stockton arch and associated Stockton fault. The buried Bakersfield arch near the south end of the valley separates the small Maricopa-Tejon subbasin at the south end of the San Joaquin basin from the remainder of the basin. Cenozoic strata in the San Joaquin basin thicken southeastward from about 800 m in the north to over 9,000 m in the south. \r\n\r\nThe San Joaquin Valley can be subdivided into five regions on the basis of differing structural style. They are the northern Sierran block, the southern Sierran block, the northern Diablo homocline, the westside fold belt, and the combined Maricopa-Tejon subbasin and southmargin deformed belt. Considerable facies variation existed within the sedimentary basin, particularly in the Neogene when a thick section of marine sediment accumulated in the southern part of the basin, while a relatively thin and entirely nonmarine section was deposited in the northern part. The northern Sierran block, the stable east limb of the valley syncline between the Stockton fault and the San Joaquin River, is the least deformed region of the valley. Deformation consists mostly of a southwest tilt and only minor late Cenozoic normal faulting. The southern Sierran block, the stable east limb of the valley syncline between the San Joaquin River and the Bakersfield arch, is similar in style to the northern part of the block, but it has a higher degree of deformation. Miocene or older normal faults trend mostly north to northwest and have a net down-to-the-west displacement with individual offsets of as much as 600 m. The northern Diablo homocline, the western limb of the valley syncline between the Stockton arch and Panoche Creek, consists of a locally faulted homocline with northeast dips. Deformation is mostly late Cenozoic, is complex in its history, and has included up-to-the-southwest reverse faulting. The west-side fold belt, the southwestern part of the valley syncline between Panoche Creek and Elk Hills and including the southern Diablo and Temblor Ranges, is characterized by a series of folds and faults trending slightly oblique to the San Andreas fault. Paleogene folding took place in the northern part of the belt; however, most folding took place in Neogene time, during which the intensity of deformation increased southeastward along the belt and southwestward toward the San Andreas fault. The Maricopa-Tejon subbasin and the south-margin deformed belt are structurally distinct, but genetically related, regions bounded by the Bakersfield arch on the north, the San Emigdio Mountains on the south, the Tehachapi Mountains on the east, and the southeast end of the fold belt on the west. This combined region, which is the most deformed part of the basin, has undergone significant late Cenozoic shortening through north-directed thrust faulting at the south margin, as well as extreme Neogene basin subsidence north of the thrust belt. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary history of the San Joaquin basin, recorded in terms of unconformity-bounded depositional sequences, has been controlled principally by tectonism, but it has also been controlled by eustatic sea-level changes and, to a lesser degree, by climate. Plate tectonic events that had an influence on the basin include (1) subduction during the early Tertiary that changed from oblique to normal convergence in the later part of the Eocene, (2) the mid-Oligocene encounter of the Pacific-Farallon spreading ridge with the trench, and the consequent establishment of the San Andreas transform, (3) the northwestward migration of the Mendocino triple junction that in","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1501","usgsCitation":"Bartow, J.A., 1991, The Cenozoic evolution of the San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1501, 40 p.; 2 plates in pocket, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1501.","productDescription":"40 p.; 2 plates in pocket","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104667,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4910.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"4910"},{"id":122041,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1501/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":67207,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1501/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":67208,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1501/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":67209,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1501/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad2e4b07f02db681b73","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartow, J.
