Much of the work is done in cooperation with other agencies; during fiscal year 1986 and 1987 cooperators included eight State agencies, two counties, one municipality and seven Federal agencies. This report serves both as a biennial progress report to the cooperating agencies and the general public, and as one means of coordination of water-resources activities with other agencies. Lists and location maps are included for 162 streamflow stations, 15 reservoirs stations, 107 surface-water-quality stations, 24 sediment stations, and 89 groundwater observation wells, all of which were in operation at the beginning of water year 1987. During fiscal years 1985 and 1986, 12 streamflow stations, 39 surface-water-quality stations, six sediment stations, and five groundwater-observation wells were discontinued. Descriptions, location maps, and progress statements are given for four data-collection projects and 23 water-resources-appraisal projects that were active (funded) during fiscal year 1986 and (or) fiscal year 1987. Also included are a list of nine projects for which funding ended prior to 1986 and that are completed except for the final report(s), and a list of four new projects that will be funded during fiscal year 1987. The final section of the report is a bibliographic listing of reports about the water resources of Wyoming, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey authors. The WRD is also designing a National Water Information System (NWIS) that will combine and integrate the existing National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE), National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX), and components of several other existing systems. The procedures and testing done in a market evaluation of 32-bit microcomputers are documented. The results of the testing are documented in the NWIS Project Office. The market evaluation was done to identify commercially available hardware and software that could be used for implementing early NWIS prototypes to determine the applicability of 32-bit microcomputers for data base and general computing applications. Three microcomputers will be used for these prototype studies. The results of the prototype studies will be used to compile requirements for a Request for Procurement (RFP) for hardware and software to meet the WRD 's needs in the early 1990's. The identification of qualified vendors to provide the prototype hardware and software included reviewing industry literature, and making telephone calls and personal visits to prospective vendors. Those vendors that appeared to meet general requirements were required to run benchmark tests. Gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc are present throughout the district in veins and altered country rock. Although four generations of quartz veins are defined, there is complete gradation between types. The metals present are the same in all four, only the abundances vary. The concentrations of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc in altered country rock are zoned around known or projected mineralized-vein zones. Similarities in metal populations of all quartz veins, altered rock, and mineralized zones, plus the distribution of metals and some major elements, suggest that all formed as part of a single hydrothermal system.</p>\n<p>Gold in abundances greater than 1 ppm does not correlate with any other element and its distribution is very erratic. The variance in gold values between replicate samples collected in 0.5 m square panels is very high. Radio-element analyses (radium-equivalent uranium, thorium, and potassium) for 40 widely distributed sample localities indicate little variation in these elements throughout the district. If the hydrothermal system had an effect on the distribution of these elements, the system must have extended beyond the limits of the sampled area.</p>\n<p>Anomalous values of gold, silver, lead, and to a lesser extent copper and zinc in surface rock samples clearly delineated the northern mineralized zone in the upper agglomerate, and an east-vein area and west-vein area of the southern mineralized zone in the lower agglomerate. These soundings were made in support of the Water Resources Division Regional Aquifer-Systems Analysis study. &nbsp;The soundings were made to estimate the thickness of the basalt, which is the main aquifer in this area.</p>\n<p><br /> The surveyed area is mostly in the Snake River Plain and is composed primarily of Quaternary basalt. Interflow zones of cinders and rubble Make for high porosity and high hydraulic conductivity (Whitehead and Lindholm, 1985). Tertiary aged Banbury Basalt of the Idaho Group (Covington, 1976) is exposed in the wall of the Snake River canyon and probably underlies the Quaternary basalt in the study area.</p>\n<p>The purpose of this report is to release the observed Schlumberger sounding data. The geohydrologic data include log, water quality, water level, hydraulics, and water use information. The log data consist of depths to the top of selected geologic formations determined from about 275 sites with geophysical logs and formation lithologies from about 190 sites with lithologic logs. The water quality data consist of about 10,800 analyses, of which about 1 ,200 are proprietary. The water level data consist of about 4 ,480 measured water levels and about 4,175 equivalent freshwater hydraulic heads, of which about 3,745 are proprietary. The hydraulics data consist of results from about 30 specific capacity tests and about 20 aquifer tests, and interpretations of about 285 drill stem tests (of which about 60 are proprietary) and about 75 core-sample analyses. The water use data consist of estimates of freshwater withdrawals from Precambrian through Cretaceous geohydrologic units for each of the 105 counties in Kansas. Average yearly withdrawals were estimated for each decade from 1940 to 1980. All the log and water use data and the nonproprietary parts of the water quality , water level, and hydraulics data are available on magnetic tape from the USGS office in Lawrence, Kansas.
