The mean number of unionids at these stations declined over this time period, decreasing from 10 m<sup>−2</sup> in 1961, to 6 m<sup>−2</sup> in 1972, down to 4 m<sup>−2</sup> in 1982. This decline in abundance was reflected in the decrease in the number of stations where mussels were found; unionids were found at 16 of the 17 stations in 1961, but at only 6 stations in 1982. The results showed 2 pathways for the uptake of food material in these clams. The first is&nbsp;represented by an initial label pulse in the feces. The second pathway operates over longer time&nbsp;periods. Inert <sup>51</sup>Cr-labeled beads were used to determine time frames for these pathways. The first&nbsp;pathway, involving extracellular digestion and intestinal uptake, is relatively inefficient in the&nbsp;digestion of bacterial cells by <i>P. amurensis</i> but more efficient in <i>M. balthica</i>. The second pathway,&nbsp;involving intracellular digestion within the digestive gland of both clams, was highly efficient in&nbsp;absorbing &nbsp;bacterial carbon, and was responsible for most chromium uptake. Abstracts and papers by non‐U.S. authors are not described.</p><p>The publications reviewed reflect increased integration of rock magnetic property and petrologic studies with magnetic anomaly interpretation studies, particularly in deep crustal magnetization, exploration for hydrocarbons, and inversion of marine magnetic anomalies. Interpretations of aeromagnetic data featuring image display techniques and using the horizontal gradient method for locating magnetization boundaries became standard. The magnetic anomaly map of North America appeared, the first such map of an entire continent. MAGSAT data contributed to the development of a new model for the magnetization of the oceanic crust. A tremor model of magma transport is developed from mass balances of percolation that are proportional to tremor durations. It gives reasonable magma fractions and residence times for a vertical drift velocity of 4 km yr</span><sup>-1</sup><span>&nbsp;and yields patterns of intermittency that are in accord with singularity analyses of the 22-year time series record. It is suggested that spatiotemporal universality extends from small to large scales in Hawaiian and other magmatic systems.
