The equations relate combinations of drainage area, main-channel length, main-channel slope, average basin elevation, forested area, average annual precipitation, and an index of infiltration to low flows with durations of 7 and 30 days and average recurrence intervals of 2 and 10 years. Data from 132 long-term continuous-record gaging stations and partial-record sites in Ohio were used in the analyses.\r\n\r\nMultiple-regression analyses were first performed by using data from all 132 sites in an attempt to develop equations that would be applicable statewide. Standard errors for the statewide equations were too high (111 to 189 percent) for them to be of practical use in estimating low streamflows.\r\n\r\nData for the state were then subdivided into five regions, and multiple-regression equations were developed for each region. Standard errors for four of the five regions improved, and raged from 43 to 106 percent. Standard errors for region 5 remained high (74 to 129 percent).\r\n\r\nThe multiple-regression equations presented in this report are not applicable to streams with significant low-flow regulation. The equations also are not applicable if (1) the site has been gaged and low-flow estimates have been developed from gaging-station records, (2) low flow can be estimated by the drainage-area transference method from data for a nearby gaged site, or (3) a sufficient number of partial-record measurements made at the site can be adquately correlated with concurrent base flows at a suitable index station.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri864354","usgsCitation":"Koltun, G., and Schwartz, R., 1987, Multiple-regression equations for estimating low flows at ungaged stream sites in Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4354, iv, 39 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864354.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":125113,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56917,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56918,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56919,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56920,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56921,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56922,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56923,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4354/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b48c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Koltun, G. Residents of the basin became concerned about factors that could have affected the severity and frequency of out-of-bank floods. In response to those concerns, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, undertook a study to estimate peak discharges and recurrence intervals for the seven floods of interest, provide information on current and historical mining-related stream-channel fill or scour, and examine storm-period subbasin contributions to the sediment load in Wheeling Creek.\r\n\r\nStreamflow data for adjacent basins, rainfall data, and, in two cases, flood-profile data were used in conjunction with streamflow data subsequently collected on Wheeling Creek to provide estimates of peak discharge for the seven floods that occurred from February 1979 through June 1981. Estimates of recurrence intervals were assigned to the Peak discharges on the basin of regional regression equations that relate selected basin characteristics to peak discharge with fixed recurrence intervals. These estimates indicate that a statistically unusual number of floods with recurrence intervals of 2 years or more occurred within that time period.\r\n\r\nThree cross sections located on Wheeling Creek and four located on tributaries were established and surveyed quarterly for approximately 2 years. No evidence of appreciable stream-channel fill or scour was observed at any of the cross sections, although minor profile changes were apparent at some locations. Attempts were made to obtain historical cross-section profile data for comparison with current cross-section profiles; however, no usable data were found.\r\n\r\nExcavations of stream-bottom materials were made near the three main-stem cross-section locations and near the mouth of Jug Run. The bottom materials were examined for evidence of recently deposited sediments of mining-related origin. The only evidence of appreciable mining-related sediment deposition was found at Jug Run, and, to a lesser extent, at one main-stem site.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri874053","usgsCitation":"Kolva, J., and Koltun, G., 1987, Flooding and sedimentation in Wheeling Creek basin, Belmont County, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4053, iv, 33 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874053.","productDescription":"iv, 33 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":126675,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4053/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56926,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4053/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e3e4b07f02db5e5ba0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kolva, J.R.","contributorId":64264,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kolva","given":"J.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199223,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Koltun, G. The aquifers are exposed in the Bear Lodge Mountains and the Black Hills and are about 3,000 to 5,000 ft below the land surface in the northeast corner of the study area. The direction of groundwater movement is from the outcrop area toward central South Dakota. Recharge is by infiltration of precipitation and streamflow is by springs and well withdrawals. All three aquifers yield water to flowing wells in some part of the area. Measured and reported well yields in each of the three aquifers exceed 100 gal/min (gpm). A well open to the Minnelusa Formation and the upper part of the Madison Limestone yielded more than 2 ,000 gpm. Water from the Inyan Kara aquifer may require treatment for gross alpha radiation, iron, manganese, sulfate, and hardness before use in public water systems. Water from the Minnelusa aquifer in the northern one-half of the study area may require treatment for sulfate and hardness before use in public water systems. Water from the Madison aquifer in the northern one-half of the study area may require treatment of fluoride, gross alpha radiation, sulfate, and hardness before use in public water systems. Water from the Minnelusa and Madison aquifers in the southern one-half of the study area, though very hard (more than 180 mg/L hardness as calcium carbonate), is suitable for public water systems and irrigation. Flow between the Minnelusa and the Inyan Kara aquifers appears to be insignificant, based on the results of a digital model results. The model indicated there may be significant recharge to the Minnelusa and Madison aquifers by leakage between these two aquifers and perhaps deeper aquifers. Contrary to the contention that channel gravels are being covered by fine-grained sediment, examination of the river channel at several sites indicates that bed sediment is generally a thin veneer ( < 0.6 ft) over local bedrock. This thin sediment veneer and numerous streambed exposures of local bedrock suggest that bed material commonly is redistributed and that most fine-grained sediments probably have a short residence time and are transported through the study reach. The Shields criterion for bedload transport suggests that maximum discharges for the Deschutes River upstream from Pringle Falls subsequent to the operation of Wickiup Dam could transport bed material about 20% layer (up to about 17 mm) than pre-closure maximum discharges. Minimum discharges subsequent to dam closure, however, appeared capable of transporting only particles about one-half as large (up to about 6 mm) as pre-closure minimum discharges. Operation of Wickiup Dam appears to have had little effect of the size of transported bedload in the Deschutes River near Benham Falls. Bank erosion, averaging 0.2 to 0.4 ft/year, appears to have started subsequent to the operation of Wickiup Dam and may have resulted from changes in the timing of high and low stages. Most of the eroded material is fine grained ( < 2 mm). Shields ' bedload transport criteria suggest that this sediment should move through the upper Deschutes River and not cause appreciable sedimentation on the channel bed. Substantial alteration of river stage following dam closure has resulted in subaerial exposure of channel bar gravels during the brown trout spawning season, which lasts from October through December in the upper Deschutes basin. This factor, combined with a lack of gravel in the deeper part of the channel, appears to be a major contributor to reduction of the brown trout spawning habitat in the upper Deschutes River.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874114","usgsCitation":"Cameron, K.A., and Major, J., 1987, Reconnaissance investigation of sediment distribution, erosion, and transport in the upper Deschutes River, Deschutes County, Oregon, November 1986: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4114, iv, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874114.","productDescription":"iv, 24 p.","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":393636,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46780.htm"},{"id":55290,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4114/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158158,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4114/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Deschutes County","otherGeospatial":"upper Deschutes River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.8333,\n 43.6667\n ],\n [\n -121.3333,\n 43.6667\n ],\n [\n -121.3333,\n 44\n ],\n [\n -121.8333,\n 44\n ],\n [\n -121.8333,\n 43.6667\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63ebb4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cameron, K. Flood elevations, velocities and boundaries were determined for the occurrence of a 100-year flood through a reach, approximately 1-mi-long, of the Hoh River at the ranger station complex in Olympic National Park. Flood elevations, estimated by step-backwater analysis of the 100-year flood discharge through 14 channel and flood-plain cross sections of the Hoh River, indicate that the extent of flooding in the vicinity of buildings or public facilities at the ranger station complex is likely to be limited mostly to two historic meander channels that lie partly within loop A of the public campground and that average flood depths of about 2 feet or less would be anticipated in these channels. Mean flow velocities at the cross sections, corresponding to the passage of a 100-year flood, ranged from about 5 to over 11 ft/sec. Flooding in the vicinity of either the visitors center or the residential and maintenance areas is unlikely unless the small earthen dam at the upstream end of Taft Creek were to fail. Debris flows with volumes on the order of 100 to 1,000 cu yards could be expected to occur in the small creeks that drain the steep valley wall north of the ranger station complex. Historic debris flows in these creeks have generally traveled no more than about 100 yards out onto the valley floor. The potential risk that future debris flows in these creeks might reach developed areas within the ranger station complex is considered to be small because most of the developed areas within the complex are situated more than 100 yards from the base of the valley wall. Landslides or rock avalanches originating from the north valley wall with volumes potentially much larger than those for debris flows could have a significant impact on the ranger station complex. The probability that such landslides or avalanches may occur is unknown. Inspection of aerial photographs of the Hoh River valley revealed the apparent presence, along the ridge crest of the north valley wall, of ridge-top depressions--geologic features that are sometimes associated with the onset of deep-seated slope failures. However, evaluation of the potential landslide hazard associated with these depressions would require an onsite examination of the area by trained personnel. Such an effort was outside the scope of this study.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri864198","usgsCitation":"Kresch, D., and Pierson, T., 1987, Flood hazard assessment of the Hoh River at Olympic National Park ranger station, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4198, Report: iv, 22 p.; 1 Plate: 28.65 × 24.38 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864198.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 22 p.; 1 Plate: 28.65 × 24.38 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393711,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36619.htm"},{"id":56961,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4198/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":56960,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4198/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123881,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4198/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Hoh River, Olympic National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -123.942,\n 47.879\n ],\n [\n -123.9210,\n 47.879\n ],\n [\n -123.9210,\n 47.867\n ],\n [\n -123.942,\n 47.867\n ],\n [\n -123.942,\n 47.879\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cce4b07f02db544656","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kresch, D. In 1978, only about 10,000 acre-feet of water was used for irrigation, stock, domestic, and public supplies; most of this water came form Lake Oahe on the Missouri River, and was used for irrigation. The lake stores about 22 million acre-feet of water; the average annual flow of the Missouri River is about 16 million acre-feet. Tributary streams normally are dry at least 10 months per year. Average annual net surface runoff from the county is 7,900 acre-feet. At least 99 percent of the precipitation per year is lost by evapotranspiration. An estimated 1.2 million acre-feet of water is stored in eight aquifers in the glacial drift. The water generally is suitable for irrigation, stock, and domestic use. It is estimated that more than 55 million acre-feet of water is stored in nine aquifers in the bedrock. These aquifers are in the Dakota Formation, Inyan Kara Group, Sundance and Minnelusa Formations, Madison Group, Devonian strata, and Stony Mountain, Red River, and Deadwood Formations. The water is slightly to very saline and, at best, is suitable for livestock and marginally acceptable for domestic supplies. The measured pumpages were correlated with reported pumpages. The equation that describes this correlation is Q(sub)m = 0.86 x Q(sub)r where Q(sub)m is the measured pumpage and Q(sub)r is the reported pumpage. This equation was used to adjust all reported irrigation pumpage, yielding a more accurate estimate of total irrigation water use. The maximum total irrigation pumpage for 1984 was estimated to be 31,700 million gallons by using the equation and accounting for both reported and unreported pumpage. From 1979 to 1984, irrigation pumpage increased a maximum of 25% and the maximum number of irrigation wells increased 32%. Of all the lithofacies present within the study area, sandstone is the most dominant and makes up most of the upper part of the Fort Union Formation along the western edge of the Powder River basin, Wyoming. This sandstone lithofacies occurs in three forms: 1) pink conglomeratic sandstone, 2) coarse-grained sandstone, and 3) fine-grained sandstone. The pink conglomeratic sandstone lithofacies forms a series of Stacked channel bodies in which the clasts are as much as 1 3/4 in. in diameter. The coarse-grained sandstone lithofacies is laterally equivalent to the pink conglomeratic sandstone sequence, but contains smaller clasts; it is arranged en echelon (offset) to the north. The fine-grained sandstone lithofacies, limited to the northern part of the study area, is not as laterally continuous as the pink conglomeratic sandstone lithofacies to the south. Basal lag conglomerate underlies both the conglomeratic sandstone and coarse-grained sandstone lithofacies, but not the fine-grained sandstone. The presence of a fine-grained sandstone lithofacies lateral to the conglomeratic sandstone and coarse-grained sandstone lithofacies suggests the presence of a coarse-grained braided and meandering fluvial system coeval with a fine-grained meandering fluvial system.. The meandering fluvial systems drained the alluvial plain flanking the Bighorn Mountains on the west and the Casper arch on the southwest, and flowed north-northeastward within the Powder River basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1929","usgsCitation":"Weaver, J.N., and Flores, R.M., 1987, Sedimentologic and stratigraphic framework of the upper part of the Fort Union Formation, western Powder River basin, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1929, 1 Plate: 52.19 x 38.51 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1929.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 52.19 x 38.51 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":327560,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1929/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":179849,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1929.PNG"},{"id":486539,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5495.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Fort Union Formation, western Powder River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -106.6667,\n 44.0933\n ],\n [\n -106.6667,\n 43.875\n ],\n [\n -106.5833,\n 43.875\n ],\n [\n -106.5833,\n 44.0933\n ],\n [\n -106.6667,\n 44.0933\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbbc9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Weaver, J. The bulk of this gold was recovered from the western slope of the northern half of the Sierra Nevada between the Merced River in the south and the Feather River to the north, a distance of about 170 mi. Gold was first discovered, in this region, on the American River at Coloma in 1848, triggering the famed California gold rush. Mining was continuously active, somewhere in the area, from the discovery of gold until World War II when mining was legally prohibited. Dramatic increases in gold prices in the past decade coupled with recent advances in extractive techniques have revitalized prospecting, and major deposits are currently being explored and developed.
\n
Gold has been found in a variety of geologic environments in the region. In addition to production from the complex vein systems of the historically famous Mother Lode and associated East Gold Belt and West Gold Belt, large amounts of gold have also been recovered from the Grass Valley-Nevada City and other isolated lode districts and from Tertiary river channels and Quaternary alluvium.
\n
This oblique map illustrates the relation of the different gold-bearing environments to each other and to the general terrain of the northern Sierra Nevada. The map was derived from the 1970 U.S. Geological Survey 1:500,000-scale topographic map of California and the 1976 U.S. Geological Survey 1:500,000-scale topographic map of Nevada, using an isometrograph, a mechanical instrument that produces an oblique framework by tracing individual contours. Form lines sketched over this framework graphically portray the physiographic configuration of the region. Relief on the oblique map has a 3:1 vertical exaggeration and appears as if viewed from a 30° angle above the horizon.
\n
Locations of lode gold prospects and mines shown on the map were obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey's Mineral Resource Data System (MRDS), a computerized mineral-resource information file, and plotted in their respective locations (D.F. Huber, written commun., 1986). Some locations from two northern counties, missing from the MRDS retrival, were added. The twenty lode mines believed to be the most productive are cited in table 1. A total of nearly 4,000 sites, including both prospects and mines, were initially plotted, but about a third of those were obscured by topography on the oblique map. Locations of Tertiary river channels and gold-dredging fields were taken from published general references modified by examining specific sources and by cursory field examination. Seven of the major dredge fields are identified in table 2.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1981","usgsCitation":"Alpha, T.R., Dodge, F.C., and Bliss, J.D., 1987, Oblique map of the northern Sierra Nevada, California, showing location of gold-bearing areas: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1981, 1 Plate: 47.11 x 31.51 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1981.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 47.11 x 31.51 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179871,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1981.PNG"},{"id":486611,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5566.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":327579,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1981/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"northern Sierra Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122,\n 40\n ],\n [\n -122,\n 36.6833\n ],\n [\n -118.5583,\n 36.683\n ],\n [\n -118.5583,\n 40\n ],\n [\n -122,\n 40\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db69659d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Alpha, T.
