Recent interest in the anticlines near the headwaters of the Utukok River has prompted the issuance of two special reports. This, the first of the two reports, deals with the Driftwood anticlines, the second will consider the Awuna anticline and the western part of the Carbon Creek anticline.
At present, only trimetrogon photography is available in this area. This limits the accuracy and completeness of the photographic studies. Vertical photos were flown this summer but they will probably not be available for study before the November meeting. At such time as they are retrieved a more thorough photo investigation will be made.

Several early attempts were made to develop a commercial mine in this area in the period 1888-1902 but none progressed beyond the prospecting stage and little coal was produced. In 1915 the mining of coal-was started at the Bluff Point mine, 1 1/2 miles west of Homer. Available records indicate that this mine produced between 20,000 and 25,000 tons of coal before closing in 1324. No further attempt at mining was made until 1946, when the Homer Coal Corporation began development near the site of the old Bluff Point mine. Development work during 1946 and 1947 included construction of a truck-loading bunker, mess hail, bunkhouse, and an incline end hoist for raising coal from the tunnel in the face of the beach bluff. Only a small amount of underground work was done in 1946 and 1947, and practically none in 1948.
A preliminary step toward more extended investigation of the coal deposits of the Homer district was made by the writer, accompanied by T. J. Jolley of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in the summer of 1946. Several days were spent in examining the principal coal exposures near Homer and collecting samples to determine the desirability of more detailed investigation.
Detailed examination of the coal deposits of the Homer district was started by the Geological Survey in 1947. The period July 17 to September 14 was spent by the writer, assisted by H. C. Wagner, geologist, and L. A. Hale, field assistant, in reconnaissance of isolated coal exposures in an area extending several miles north of Homer, and in measuring detailed stratigraphic sections in the bluffs just north of Homer between Coal (Bidarki) and Fritz Creeks.

The project was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Field work was done by Fred Keller, Jr., and J. L. Meuschke, Geophysicists of the U.S. Geological Survey, and by L. R. Alldredge, Physicist of the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. The instrument used was a modified AN/ASQ-3A flux-gate type total field magnetometer mounted in the tailcone of a PBY-5A aircraft. It is hoped that observation of the magnetic fields over volcanic areas over a period of years, may lead to prognostication of volcanic activity. These maps represent the results of the first of such surveys.

The shallowest of the eight holes reached 800 feet; the deepest was drilled to a depth of 1460 feet.
Geophysical data on the shallow horizons indicate that the Simpson Seeps Core Tests shown on the section have been drilled in an area of nearly north-south strike. The five core tests that most nearly approximate a section normal to the strike were chosen for the accompanying cross Section. An east-west strike, accompanied by strong anomalous dips of fifteen to twenty degrees to the north is indicated by geophysical data about five miles north of the cross section.

In addition to observation of the volcanoes, temperatures of fumaroles were measured and some products of the volcanic activity were collected and analyzed.
After an eruption in 1945, Cone A in Okmok Caldera on northeastern Umnak Island remained relatively quiet during the period 1946–1948. The fumarole gases contained water vapor, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. The incrustations associated with the sulfur dioxide fumaroles are the sulfate minerals halotrichite, gypsum, and soda alum. Temperatures of lava fumaroles at the source of the December, 1945 lava flow from Cone A dropped from an average of 320°C on July 19, 1946, to 90°C on September 5, 1946. With exception of the large central fumarole which reached red heat in 1947, the extra crater fumaroles of Cone A ranged from 96° to 98° C in temperature
Cone C, another cone in Okmok Caldera was in the solfataric stage and emitted water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, and probably carbon dioxide. Incrustations associated with fumaroles on this cone consisted of sulfur, pyrite, and aragonite. The temperatures of the fumaroles ranged from 95° to 96°C and were probably kept within this narrow range partly by the heat supplied during condensation of steam.
Sixteen large thermal springs emerging from the base of Cone D in Okmok Caldera had an aggregate discharge of approximately 115 cfs and gave off approximately 21,000 kcal of heat per second on September 7, 1946.
Water samples of thermal springs on Umnak Island contained as high as 159 ppm of boron expressed as B203 and a few parts per million of arsenic and antimony. Several of the thermal springs in southwestern Umnak Island were slightly superheated with respect to the boiling point of water and behaved as small geysers. As has been found elsewhere, the discharge, temperature, and composition of the emanations from a spring is modified by surface conditions of topography and drainage.
Thermal springs and fumaroles on Great Sitkin Island occurred at an altitude of about 2000 ft near the head of the west fork of Big Fox Creek. All the fumaroles were at or near a temperature of 100°C. The large crater fumarole in the center of the 1945 crater dome was unapproachable. No change in the activity of Great Sitkin volcano was observed between 1946 and August 1948.

Approximately 1.000 drill and outcrop samples have been studied. In order to relate the materiel here presented to the regional geologic picture of the central area, the restored facies cross-sections A-A' and B-B' of T.G. Payne 1/ are used as a basis for the graphic presentation of the heavy mineral zonation. Section C-C' of Payne is not used because most of it lies outside the area treated in this report and because of new geological and geophysical interpretations in the Barrow area as the result of recent exploration. Instead, the heavy mineral zonation along a somewhat different section C-C' (see fig. 1) is discussed but not illustrated.

Mr. Delta. and Mr. English recently expressed a desire to know the magnitude of the calculated gravity anomaly produced by this probable fault. Their purpose was to determine the feasibility of proving and locating this fault, if exists, by several traverses with the gravimeter.
As interpreted in Wiancko's report, the fault is nearly east-west in strike and is a reverse fault with the up-thrust block on the north side.
The assumptions made for the calculation of the theoretical anomaly were that the density of the basement rock was 2.7, the density of the overlying rocks was 2.2 and the fault itself was taken directly from Plate I, Drawing No. 2044, of Wiancko's report, simplified, and reduced by a factor of 2.
The calculated anomaly is shown in Fig. 1. A polar chart similar to the type described on pages 153-154 of Heiland's \"Geophysical Exploration\" was used in computing the value of the anomaly. It was assumed that the feature is two-dimensional. Broken lines indicate values of limited accuracy. It should be mentioned here that Mr. Roland Henderson and Mr. Isidore Zietz of the Section of Geophysics of the Geological Survey carried out the calculations and plotted Fig. 1.
