About 1,170 Mgal/d, or 37 percent, of the total water withdrawn in Illinois, excluding withdrawals for thermoelectric-power generation, was ground water; about 1,998 Mgal/d of surface water was withdrawn and used, excluding withdrawals for thermoelectric-power generation. About 25 Mgal/d of the total ground water withdrawn was saline. Seventy-five percent of the total surface water, excluding withdrawals for thermoelectric-power generation, was withdrawn by public-supply facilities. Self-supplied industrial withdrawals were the next largest use of surface water. Thirty-nine percent of the total ground water was withdrawn by public-supply facilities. Irrigation was the next largest use of ground water. Sixty-two percent of the total water withdrawn, excluding thermoelectric withdrawals, in Illinois during 1988 was for public-supply facilities. Self-supplied withdrawals by industries and for irrigation were the next largest uses of water in Illinois during 1988.\r\nThe total water withdrawn for thermoelectric-power generation was about 15,589 Mgal/d. Water withdrawn and delivered from public-supply facilities in Illinois during 1988 totaled about 1,956 Mgal/d. Surface water and ground water were the sources for about 1,495 and 462 Mgal/d, respectively, of the withdrawals for public supply. The total water obtained from Lake Michigan for public-water supply was about 1,214 Mgal/d. About 122 Mgal/d was withdrawn for self-supplied domestic purposes. Total self-supplied withdrawals and deliveries from public-water facilities for commercial use were about 654 Mgal/d. About 159 Mgal/d was self-supplied by the commercial establishments. Total irrigation water withdrawals were about 302 Mgal/d. Although irrigated acreage in Illinois has increased from 265,036 acres in 1986 to 281,370 acres in 1988, the most significant factor for the increased irrigation water use was the drought conditions throughout the entire State. Total estimated livestock withdrawals were about 56 Mgal/d. Total self-supplied withdrawals and deliveries from public-supply facilities for industrial purposes were about 743 Mgal/d. About 480 Mgal/d was self-supplied withdrawals by industrial facilities. A total of about 94 Mgal/d was withdrawn during mining activities. A total of about 34 Mgal/d was withdrawn during mining from ground-water sources; about 25 Mgal/d of the ground water withdrawn was saline.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nMay be purchased from U.S. Geological Survey-ESIC, Open-File Reports Section,","doi":"10.3133/ofr95309","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Avery, C., 1995, Estimated water withdrawals and use in Illinois, 1988: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-309, iv, 52 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95309.","productDescription":"iv, 52 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154555,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0309/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51772,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0309/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fcc33","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Avery, C.F.","contributorId":67543,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Avery","given":"C.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188107,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Core 6A from Bob Allen Keys (25° 1.391” N, 80°39.41” W) penetrated 172 cm of Holocene sediments in 0.6 m of water on a grass covered mud bank, approximately 1.75 miles (2.82 km) east of the water monitoring station on the southern end of the Bob Allen Keys. Core 6A was sampled for particle size, insoluble residue, water content, loss on ignition, Pb<sup>210</sup>, Rasup&gt;222, and paleontologic analyses. Here we present the results of the preliminary paleontologic analyses of the biotic components from core #6A.</p><p>The Everglades/Florida Bay ecosystem has formed over the last 5000 years at the southern tip of peninsular Florida. Here it has been influenced by Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico waters, and by tropical and subtropical climatic regimes. This location ensures that over time the ecosystem has undergone climatic changes on both a seasonal and long term basis, and that it has been subjected to many major storms. Additionally, in the last century, the hydrologic regime of the region has been altered profoundly through construction of a canal system to control flooding in southern Florida. This system regulates the timing and amount of freshwater flow into Florida Bay. Recently, algal blooms, seagrass, and sponge die-offs, and declining numbers of shellfish, have been reported in Florida Bay; although it has been assumed that these changes have resulted from human alteration of freshwater flow into the bay, this assumption has not been rigorously tested.</p><p>The research described here is part of a project designed to examine the history of the Everglades/Florida Bay ecosystem over the last 150 years and to test assumptions of cause and effect. The purpose of the project is two-fold; first, to determine the characteristics of the ecosystem prior to significant human-induced alteration, including the natural range of variation in the ecosystem. This information will establish a baseline for restoration of the system. Second, the project aims to establish the extent, range, and timing of changes to the ecosystem over the last 150 years, and to determine whether these changes correlate with human alteration of the environment, or meteorological patterns, such as precipitation and major storms, or a combination of factors.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr95628","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Brewster-Wingard, G., Ishman, S., Cronin, T.M., Edwards, L.E., Willard, D.A., and Halley, R.B., 1995, Preliminary analysis of down-core biotic assemblages Bob Allen Keys, Everglades National Park, Florida Bay: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-628, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95628.","productDescription":"35 p.","numberOfPages":"35","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":362632,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0628/ofr1995628.pdf","text":"Report","size":"257 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1995-628"},{"id":152970,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0628/coverthb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.5390625,\n              30.939924331023445\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.51708984375,\n              30.334953881988564\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.8251953125,\n              29.99300228455108\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.17724609375,\n              29.075375179558346\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.1884765625,\n              28.34306490482549\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.4853515625,\n              26.05678288577881\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.57373046875,\n              24.627044746156027\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.7607421875,\n              26.41155054662258\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.04638671875,\n              27.89734922968426\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.9912109375,\n              30.031055426540206\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.40869140625,\n              30.713503990354965\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.82617187499999,\n              30.80791068136646\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.814453125,\n              30.789036751261136\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.990234375,\n              31.109388560814963\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.5390625,\n              30.939924331023445\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\">Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3321 College Avenue<br>Davie, FL 33314</p><p><a href=\"../contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Introduction</li><li>Acknowledgements</li><li>Methods of Investigation</li><li>Faunal and Floral Analyses</li><li>Discussion</li><li>Summary</li></ul>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67cc03","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brewster-Wingard, G. The purpose of the Huron Project is to demonstrate the artificial recharge potential of glacial aquifers in eastern South Dakota. High flows from the James River during spring runoff are used as a source of supplemental recharge for the Warren aquifer, which is a buried, glacial aquifer. Prior to the injection of recharge water, which began in April 1994, many sites were monitored to obtain background information. This report presents data that were collected prior to the initiation of recharge. Precipitation data are collected at two sites within the study area. A site description and daily precipitation for water years 1991-93 are presented for one precipitation site. In 1990, 76 test holes were drilled and observation wells were installed at 70 sites. Well information and geologic logs collected during the drilling program for the Huron Project are presented. In addition to the 70 new Huron Project wells, 15 existing observation wells owned by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources were incorporated into the study. Water- level hydrographs are presented for the 85 observation wells. The period of record shown for the hydrographs is from the earliest available record through September 1993. Water-quality data were collected from both screening and detailed sampling programs. Screening water-quality data for 32 observation wells are presented. These data include primarily field parameters and common ions. The eight detailed sampling sites represent the quality of untreated water, treated water, an intermittent stream, and ground water from the Warren aquifer. Data presented for the detailed sampling program include field parameters, bacteria counts, and concentrations of common ions, solids, nutrients, trace elements, radiometrics, total organic carbon, herbicides, insecticides, and volatile organic compounds.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr95313","usgsCitation":"Carter, J.M., 1995, Hydrologic data through 1993 for the Huron Project of the High Plains Ground-Water Demonstration Program: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-313, vi, 151 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95313.","productDescription":"vi, 151 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151181,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0313/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":47775,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0313/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ce4b07f02db608040","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carter, Janet M. 0000-0002-6376-3473 jmcarter@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6376-3473","contributorId":339,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"Janet","email":"jmcarter@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":562,"text":"South Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":179098,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

To aid in the sampling design of the biological component of the South Platte NAWQA, sources of water-related studies were compiled from computerized literature searches of biological data bases and by contacting other Federal, State, and local agencies. Biological investigations were categorized by their location in either of two major physiographic provinces-the Southern Rocky Mountains or the Great Plains, or in the transition zone between the mountains and the plains. From this collection of 102 references, five general categories of biological investigations were identified:  algae, invertebrates, fish, habitat characterization, and chemicals in organism tissue. The most abundant literature was on studies of invertebrate and fish communities. Invertebrate studies primarily were conducted in the mountain region. There was limited information on algae, invertebrates in the plains region, flood-plain vegetation in the mountains and transition zone, and chemicals in organism tissue.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr95379","usgsCitation":"Tate, C.M., and Ortiz-Zayas, J.R., 1995, Inventory of biological investigations related to stream water quality in the South Platte River basin, Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming, 1891-1994: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-379, iii, 12 p. ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95379.","productDescription":"iii, 12 p. ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154549,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0379/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":19375,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0379/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db64865a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tate, Cathy M. cmtate@usgs.gov","contributorId":3438,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tate","given":"Cathy","email":"cmtate@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":183831,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ortiz-Zayas, Jorge R.","contributorId":81932,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ortiz-Zayas","given":"Jorge","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183832,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A few deep wells in the northwestern part of the field have penetrated beneath this reservoir into a second vapor-dominated reservoir where temperatures are &gt;315°C, while vapor pressure remains nearly constant at about 35.9 bars (Walters et al., 1992). Vapor-dominated reservoirs generally are thought to operate like heat pipes in which steam formed near the base of the system convects upward (along with other gases, such as CC&gt;2 and H2S), while liquid that has condensed from steam near the top of the reservoir counterflows downward (White et al., 1971). To the extent that this steam condensate carries H2S in solution, it may dissolve gold from the surrounding rock during the counterflow. Re-evaporation of the down-flowing condensate and precipitation of dissolved material might occur at the base of the upper reservoir where there is a relatively sharp increase in temperature while vapor pressure remains nearly constant. In addition, brine that once was present throughout the system (Moore, 1992) may have deposited a variety of ore minerals when and where boiling was vigorous during the transition from previous hot water-dominated to present-day vapor-dominated conditions. The investigation reported here was a geochemical reconnaissance survey looking for evidence of accumulation of Au and other metals in the transition zone between the two reservoirs. The petrology of the cuttings was not examined as part of the investigation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr9530","usgsCitation":"Fournier, R.O., and Moore, J.N., 1995, Trace metals and major and rare earth elements in cuttings from five high-temperature wells in the northwest region of The Geysers, California, vapor-dominated geothermal system: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-30, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9530.","productDescription":"11 p.","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":151415,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0030/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48366,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0030/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db627582","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fournier, Robert O.","contributorId":73202,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fournier","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180055,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, Joseph N.","contributorId":12508,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

To protect salmon egg incubation habitat during the period November 2 to April 30, a fish-water bypass was incorporated into the design of the dam to ensure a minimum discharge of 40 cubic feet per second in the lower river. This minimum flow determination was based on an open-water instream flow study that did not take into account effects of ice formation. A study was begun in March 1993 to determine winter flow conditions in the lower Bradley River. As a part of this study, data were collected at sites in the lower Bradley River to measure discharge, wetted perimeter, cross-sectional area, water depth, flow velocity, and specific conductance, as well as temperature and dissolved oxygen from both surface water and intragravel water. Discharge and specific conduc- tance in the Middle Fork Bradley River below North Fork Bradley River were also measured.
