The WRD is also designing a National Water Information System (NWIS) that will combine and integrate the existing National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System (WATSTORE), National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX), and components of several other existing systems. The procedures and testing done in a market evaluation of 32-bit microcomputers are documented. The results of the testing are documented in the NWIS Project Office. The market evaluation was done to identify commercially available hardware and software that could be used for implementing early NWIS prototypes to determine the applicability of 32-bit microcomputers for data base and general computing applications. Three microcomputers will be used for these prototype studies. The results of the prototype studies will be used to compile requirements for a Request for Procurement (RFP) for hardware and software to meet the WRD 's needs in the early 1990's. The identification of qualified vendors to provide the prototype hardware and software included reviewing industry literature, and making telephone calls and personal visits to prospective vendors. Those vendors that appeared to meet general requirements were required to run benchmark tests. A potentially widespread contamination problem involves organic chemicals used in wood-preserving processes. Creosote is the most extensively used industrial preservative in the United States today, with more than 400 wood-preserving plants in the United States collectively using 4.5x10<sup>9</sup> kg (kilograms) of creosote per year (von Rumker and others, 1975). It is estimated that creosote contains more than 200 major individual compounds with differing molecular weights, polarities, and functionalities, along with dispersed solids and products of polymerization (Novotny and others, 1981). Analyses of creosote consist of approximately 85 percent by weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, 12 percent phenolic compounds, and 3 percent heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen.</p>\n<p>Because of the widespread distribution of creosote in the environment, an abandoned wood-treatment plant in Pensacola, Fla., was selected by the U.S. Geological Survey Office of Hazardous Waste Hydrology as one of three national research demonstration areas in order to increase our understanding of hydrologic processes affecting the distributions of contaminants in ground water. The code (WATEQ4F) has been adapted to execute on an IBM PC or compatible microcomputer. Two versions of the code are available, one operating with IBM Professional FORTRAN and an 8087 or 89287 numeric coprocessor, and one which operates without a numeric coprocessor using Microsoft FORTRAN 77. The calculation procedure is identical to WATEQ2, which has been installed on many mainframes and minicomputers. Limited data base revisions include the addition of the following ions: AlHS04(++), BaS04, CaHS04(++), FeHS04(++), NaF, SrC03, and SrHCO3(+). This report provides the reactions and references for the data base revisions, instructions for program operation, and an explanation of the input and output files. Attachments contain sample output from three water analyses used as test cases and the complete FORTRAN source listing. Much of the work is done in cooperation with other agencies; during fiscal year 1986 and 1987 cooperators included eight State agencies, two counties, one municipality and seven Federal agencies. This report serves both as a biennial progress report to the cooperating agencies and the general public, and as one means of coordination of water-resources activities with other agencies. Lists and location maps are included for 162 streamflow stations, 15 reservoirs stations, 107 surface-water-quality stations, 24 sediment stations, and 89 groundwater observation wells, all of which were in operation at the beginning of water year 1987. During fiscal years 1985 and 1986, 12 streamflow stations, 39 surface-water-quality stations, six sediment stations, and five groundwater-observation wells were discontinued. Descriptions, location maps, and progress statements are given for four data-collection projects and 23 water-resources-appraisal projects that were active (funded) during fiscal year 1986 and (or) fiscal year 1987. Also included are a list of nine projects for which funding ended prior to 1986 and that are completed except for the final report(s), and a list of four new projects that will be funded during fiscal year 1987. The final section of the report is a bibliographic listing of reports about the water resources of Wyoming, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey authors.
