ILWAS was established in 1977 to determine why these lakes differ in pH when all receive equal amounts of acidic atmospheric deposition. Woods Lake is acidic (pH ranges from 4 to 5), Panther Lake is neutral (pH ranges from 5 to 7.5), and Sagamore Lake is intermediate (pH ranges from 5 to 6). The data tabulated herein include discharge at the three lake outlets and in a tributary to each lake; lake-water stage at each lake; chemical quality of lake water, including total concentrations of zinc, iron, manganese, and lead, at each lake outlet and at Lost Brook (a tributary to Sagamore Lake); groundwater stage from 29 wells; major ion concentrations of groundwater from 22 of these wells; temperature of soil from three depths at one site in each watershed; soil-moisture tension at three depths at eight sites - four in the neutral-lake basin, three in the acidic-lake basin , and one in the intermediate-lake basin; and average snowpack depths and water equivalents at approximately 20 snow-course sites in each basin for three sampling periods during the 1979-80 winter. The data set consists of the location of 3,604 points on the glacier, 1,161 points along the glacier terminus, and 1,116 points along the top of the terminus ice cliff. During the 1981 to 1985 period the terminus of the glacier receded 1,350 m, the ice near the terminus thinned at a rate of 18 m/year, and ice velocity near the terminus tripled, reaching as much as 6,000 m/year. Therefore, a monitoring network consisting of 24 stations was established for the purpose of measuring arsenic concentrations and determining arsenic discharge. Included were 5 sites on mainstems of the Madison and Missouri Rivers and 19 sites on major and some minor tributaries from Yellowstone National Park to Canyon Ferry Lake. Fifteen of the 24 stations were sampled 12 times from November 1985 to October 1986. The remaining stations were sampled twice during the year, at high flow and at low flow. Total recoverable arsenic discharge (loading) in pounds per day was calculated for each sample by multiplying total recoverable arsenic concentration by water discharge (obtained at time of sample collection) and a conversion factor. This report presents data resulting from the monitoring program. Data can be political boundaries such as State and county boundaries; natural curvilinear features such as rivers, drainage areas, and geological contacts; and points such as well locations and mineral localities. Essentially any point defined by a latitude and longitude and any line defined by a series of latitude and longitude values can be displayed using the program. PC MAP MAKER allows users to view tabular data from U.S. Geological Survey files such as WATSTORE (National Water Data Storage and Retrieval System) in a map format in a time much shorter than required by sending the data to a line plotter. The screen image can be saved to disk for recall at a later date, and hard copies can be printed with a dot matrix printer. The program is user-friendly, using menus or prompts to guide user input. It is fully documented and structured to allow the user to tailor the program to the user 's specific needs. The documentation includes a tutorial designed to introduce users to the capabilities of the program using the State of Colorado as a demonstration map area. Flood damage has been estimated at $20 million and the region was declared a Federal disaster area. Included in this report are tables of daily data for mean streamflow, suspended sediment concentration, and suspended sediment discharge at two streamflow gaging stations on the Clark Fork; periodic data for instantaneous streamflow, onsite water quality, and trace metal and suspended sediment concentrations in the Clark Fork and tributaries; and summary statistics for all the water quality data. Also included are graphs for each site showing median concentrations of trace metals, relationship of concentrations of trace metals to suspended sediment, and median concentrations of trace metals in suspended sediments. Hydrographs for two sites on the main stem show daily mean streamflow, suspended sediment concentration, and suspended sediment discharge for the period of study. On each of four subreaches, dye-tracer measurements were made at approximately 50- and 85% flow duration in 1978, 1979, and 1985. The dye-tracer data were used to develop a method for estimating the traveltime and peak concentration of a solute spilled into the Illinois River. The estimates can apply to spills at any point within the study reach during a period of relatively steady discharge of from low to medium streamflow. A sample problem to demonstrate the estimating method is solved for a hypothetical situation in which 100,000 pounds of contaminant is spilled at a railroad crossing between Spring Valley and Hennepin, Illinois.
