Knowledge gained from onshore regional geologic studies and previous offshore investigations is also incorporated in these interpretations.</p>\n<p>Glacial deposits overlie and nearly fill an Inner Lowland which is floored by crystalline rocks in the north and bounded to the south by an irregular, north-facing cuesta scarp in Cretaceous Coastal-Plain strata. The thick glacial section consists largely of sediment that was deposited in glacial Lake Connecticut during the retreat of the last (late Wisconsin) ice sheet.</p>\n<p>Ice-marginal lacustrine fan deposits and submerged extensions of the southeastern Connecticut recessional moraines mark positions of the ice margin during systematic northward retreat. When the ice margin stood at positions just north of the present shoreline of Connecticut (17.6-16.5 ka), glacial Lake Connecticut was slightly larger than Long Island Sound is today. Ice-marginal deltas and near-ice marginal fluviodeltaic deposits occur along coastal Connecticut. Delta-building was diachronous; progressively younger deltas record northwesterly retreat of the ice margin and lowering lake levels. Distally from the deltas, varied lake-clays (up to 150 m thick) drape the underlying topography.</p>\n<p>The lake spillway cut across the Harbor Hill-Roanoke Point-Fishers Island-Charlestown end moraine at its lowest point just west of Fishers Island (The Race). Lake levels fell as the spillway notch was erosionally deepened, and gradually the lakebed became subaerially exposed. A largely preserved channel system cuts the lake-deposit surface; fluvial channel-fill sediments are overlain by estuarine sediments in the channel system. Perhaps as early as 15 ka, but no later than 13 ka, the sea entered the Basin through the channel at The Race and quickly transgressed westward via the lakebed channel system. As the sea rose further and spread throughout the Basin, a wave-cut surface was formed. Extensive marine deltaic deposits, up to 40 m thick, overlie the wave-cut marine unconformity in the east-central part of the Basin. These sediments were derived from erosion of the drained bed of Lake Hitchcock, in the Connecticut valley to the north, and were deposited in a -40-m relative sea at about 12.4 ka.</p>\n<p>Where quiet waters prevail, marine mud generally less than 15 m thick blankets the older deposits of the Basin. Elsewhere, especially in eastern LIS, tidal currents are actively reworking and transporting glacial and postglacial deposits.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Coastal Education & Research Foundation","publisherLocation":"Fort Lauderdale, FL","usgsCitation":"Lewis, R., and Stone, J.R., 1991, Late Quaternary stratigraphy and depositional history of the Long Island Sound basin: Journal of Coastal Research, v. 11, p. 1-23.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"23","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":297333,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":297332,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/25735570"}],"country":"United States","state":"Connecticut, New York","otherGeospatial":"Long Island Sound","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.93798828125,\n              40.63896734381723\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.8670654296875,\n               40.63896734381723\n            ],\n            [\n               -71.8670654296875,\n              41.32320110223851\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.93798828125,\n              41.32320110223851\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.93798828125,\n              40.63896734381723\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54dd2be0e4b08de9379b353d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lewis, Ralph S.","contributorId":9288,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lewis","given":"Ralph S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":538708,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stone, Janet Radway jrstone@usgs.gov","contributorId":1695,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stone","given":"Janet","email":"jrstone@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"Radway","affiliations":[{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":538709,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We realize-or we tell each other that we do-that birds are an important part of the world's ecosystems, that they can often serve as indicator species of environmental problems, that what affects bird populations can and will eventually affect the human population. But as organizations, we lack a mechanism to tell anyone other than ourselves about our concerns or how the knowledge our study produces can be used to help efforts to protect either the birds themselves or the environment of which they and we are parts. We can, and some do, share our concerns and knowledge individually, but we have no effective way to say that 5,000 ornithologists think that \"Plan A is a good idea\" or \"Plan B could lead to declines in bird populations\" or even that \"Plan C would have a very bad (or good) effect on the scientific study of birds that is needed to know whether Plans A and B are good.\" Our current mechanism for action is pretty much restricted to adopting resolutions saying, in effect, \"We think you shouldn't have done that\" or \"We wish you would do something.\" Even the timing of this mechanism leaves much to be desired if we really intend to have any effect.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Ornithological Society","usgsCitation":"Banks, R.C., 1991, On forming an Ornithological Council: The Auk, v. 108, no. 1, p. 208-210.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"208","endPage":"210","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":341163,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4088076"},{"id":294126,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"108","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"541bf444e4b0e96537ddf7bb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, Richard C.","contributorId":102933,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":501746,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Recent studies of submarine canyons along the transform margin of western North America show that the origin and subsequent evolution of many canyons are correlatable with plate motion and plate-margin deformation. Elements of canyon morphology such as bends and meanders commonly are controlled by faults and folds that are relatable to the structural fabric of the continental shelf and slope. Some canyon heads that appear to be displaced from their lower reaches are explainable as the result of movement along strike-slip faults associated with the plate margin.</p><p>Many submarine canyons along the California margin are not associated with large rivers and thus may owe their origins either to pre-Holocene fluvial or structural processes. Some modern canyons appear to be associated with pre-Pleistocene ancestral canyons. Because of both vertical and horizontal tectonic movements during the past 20 Ma, some California submarine canyons have been repeatedly filled and exhumed; the most recent exhumation began during the latest lowstand of sea level and continues today.</p><p>Canyons that today have their upper reaches on the continental slope or outermost shelf, distant from large rivers or other sources of sediment supply, commonly appear to have been laterally displaced along offshore faults. Palinspastic reconstructions along these faults commonly reveal a genetic relation between such canyons and canyons heading nearshore, from which they were offset. For example, detailed studies of the Ascension-Monterey Submarine Canyon system in Monterey Bay suggest that several smaller canyons on the outer shelf and upper slope have been displaced northwestward from the headward part of Monterey Canyon by right slip along offshore faults of the Palo Colorado-San Gregorio, Ascension, and Monterey Bay fault zones. Many other canyons on the California margin have developed along, or had their courses abruptly altered by, structural zones, owing either to canyon cutting along a zone of weakness or to fault displacement. Mass wasting associated with zones of faulting and slumping, which may have been seismically induced, also may affect canyon form. Clearly, submarine canyons along the California margin commonly owe their origin and morphologic development to influences other than fluvial erosion during sea-level lowstands. A chief influence has been the San Andreas fault system.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"From shoreline to abyss: Contributions in marine geology in honor of Francis Parker Shepard","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Society for Sedimentary Geology","doi":"10.2110/pec.91.09.0231","usgsCitation":"Greene, H.G., Clarke, S.H., and Kennedy, M.P., 1991, Tectonic evolution of submarine canyons along the California continental margin, chap. <i>of</i> From shoreline to abyss: Contributions in marine geology in honor of Francis Parker Shepard, v. 46, p. 231-248, https://doi.org/10.2110/pec.91.09.0231.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"231","endPage":"248","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":416505,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Pacific Ocean","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.41161630600647,\n              42.0257815406828\n            ],\n            [\n              -127.07741827568586,\n              41.98835806077477\n            ],\n            [\n              -127.38395064233487,\n              39.912204429459166\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.65433693468546,\n              36.913600843632395\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.16673367125361,\n              34.382549116830674\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.47610422640233,\n              31.504287988617662\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.19709195892466,\n              32.617091771084674\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.26467161004865,\n              34.537333657167764\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.23856749286847,\n              34.70435494141583\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.43897703985544,\n              36.515346479020636\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.96625365032219,\n              38.11143155114834\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.77816703147266,\n              38.457638341824065\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.40417442786332,\n              39.250110639747106\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.68450542069246,\n              40.619347986184806\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.41161630600647,\n              42.0257815406828\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"46","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Osborne, Robert H.","contributorId":83120,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Osborne","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":871070,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Greene, H. We measured the feeding rate of slimy sculpins Cottus cognatus and burbot Lota lota on young lake charr (uncontaminated young from eggs of a hatchery brood stock and contaminated young from eggs of Lake Michigan lake charr) in laboratory test chambers with a cobble substrate. The median daily consumption rate of sculpins for all tests was 2 lake charr eggs (N = 22 tests; 95% confidence interval, O-13) and 2 lake charr free embryos (N = 31 tests; 95% confidence interval, O-10). Feeding rate did not differ between hatchery and contaminated prey. Slimy sculpins continued to feed on lake charr when another prey organism, the deepwater amphipod <i>Pontoporeia hoyi</i>, was present. Feeding by burbot on free embryos (4-36 d<sup>-l</sup>) increased as the mobility of young increased, but burbot consumed about 10% of their body weight weekly in free-swimming young (140-380 d<sup>-l</sup>). Predation on lake charr eggs by sculpins could beconsiderable over the 100 to 140 d incubation period, and burbot could eat large numbers of free-swimming lake charr as the young fish left the reef. Predation pressure on young lake charr may inhibit rehabilitation ofself-sustaining populations of lake charr on some reefs unless a critical egg density has been reached.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Environmental Biology of Fishes","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1007/BF00000692","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Savino, J.F., and Henry, M.G., 1991, Feeding rate of slimy sculpin and burbot on young lake charr in laboratory reefs: Environmental Biology of Fishes, v. 31, no. 3, p. 275-282, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00000692.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"275","endPage":"282","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":262206,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":262198,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00000692"}],"volume":"31","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50dcceace4b0d55926e40bf9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Savino, Jacqueline F. jsavino@usgs.gov","contributorId":2213,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Savino","given":"Jacqueline","email":"jsavino@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":354641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Henry, Mary G.","contributorId":38517,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henry","given":"Mary","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":354642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The data cover a wide range on the<span>&nbsp;</span>143Nd/144Nd vs.<span>&nbsp;</span>87Sr/86Sr covariation diagram, encompassing much of the mantle array and a large area below the array. Pb-isotopic signatures cover a wide range on Pb-Pb correlation diagrams, with several samples falling in the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) field, but with others defining trends towards the enriched mantle II (EM II) and high-mu (HIMU) endmembers of Zindler &amp; Hart (1986). Peridotites display the largest range in isotopic compositions, which formed in response to variable degrees of partial melting and subsequent enrichment during the intrusion of the ultramafic dikes. The ultra-mafic dikes represent at least four generations. Orogenic calcalkaline volcanic rocks formed subparallel belts of rhyolite ignimbrite of Oligocene age (~34 to 27 Ma) east of the Gulf in the Sierra Madre Occidental and andesite of Miocene age (~24 to 11 Ma) along the eastern Baja peninsula. Shutoff of the Miocene andesitic arc broadly corresponds to migration of the Pacific-Farallon (Guadalupe)-North America triple junction along the Baja peninsula. Orogenic andesitic volcanism ended at ~16 Ma in northern Baja, and at ~11 Ma in southern Baja, within ~1 to 2 Ma of cessation of subduction. Waning orogenic magmatism persisted along the southern Baja peninsula during the initial stages of rifting.</p><p>Paleogeographic implications of the distribution of circum-Gulf volcanic rocks and their inferred easterly source areas suggest that, from about 13 to 8 Ma, the rift consisted of a narrow seaway along the eastern side of the present Gulf. By about 6 Ma, the Gulf had broadened westward to approximately its present width. The period from 13 to 10 Ma was a time of tectonic transition and magmatic diversity. During this interval, medium-K calcalkaline, high-K calcalkaline, alkalic, and tholeiitic magmas erupted from the central to southern part of the Baja peninsula-Gulf region, and from about 14 to 8 Ma, rhyolite ignimbrite erupted in the northern Gulf region. Since 10 Ma, volcanism on the western Baja peninsula has been dominated by alkalic magmas, the Gulf margins by calcalkaline magmas, and the Gulf by tholeiitic magmas. Postsubduction calcalkaline andesite to rhyolite erupted sporadically and locally along the northern Gulf margins from ~9 Ma through Holocene time.</p><p>Alkalic magmas associated with rifting in the Gulf of California are unlike alkalic magmas from intraplate settings. They comprise nepheline- to quartz-normative, basaltic to andesitic rocks characterized by diverse trace element ratios. They are broadly similar to intraplate alkalic rocks in having high K, P, Ba, Sr and the light REE (rare earth elements), but have some trace element characteristics typical of orogenic magmas (low Nb and Ta relative to K, Ba, Sr, and La) that distinguish these alkalic rocks from intraplate or cratonic rift alkalic rocks. Rb abundances (mostly &lt;25 ppm, as low as 5 ppm) are unusually low in these alkalic rocks, both in contrast to the high K (~1.7-4.1 wt% K2O), Ba (~800-2200 ppm), and Sr (~1000-3700 ppm), and in comparison to Rb abundances in mafic lavas in general; many samples have Rb at levels typically found in low-K tholeiites. The high K/Rb ratios, mostly ~1000 to 5000, are among the highest reported for any lavas. Samples ranging in SiO2<span>&nbsp;</span>from 48 to 61% have Mg’ ≥ 65, indicating that a broad range of compositions may represent primary melts. The generally high Mg’, and the low Rb, Th, Nb, and Ta in some lavas, suggest that depleted refractory mantle equivalent to a mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) source contributed to these melts. The distinctive trace element enrichments are attributed to the stabilization in the source of amphibole and apatite from metasomatic fluids related to prior subduction beneath the peninsula. In discrimination diagrams, these alkalic rocks typically cluster outside previously defined fields for various magma types. The common tectonic setting among these and geochemically similar alkalic suites is the occurrence in a continental margin that is undergoing extension, located along a recently or currently active convergent plate boundary.</p><p>Tholeiitic basalts have erupted since the earliest stages of continental rifting through development of oceanic spreading centers. Gulf of California tholeiites exhibit an evolution distinguished particularly by differences in rare-earth-element (REE) abundances. Early-rift magmas are similar in trace element geochemistry to some intraplate tholeiites from ocean islands and continental flood basalts, and have convex-upward REE patterns. The most recent tholeiites from the East Pacific Rise in the mouth of the Gulf are equivalent to N-MORB (normal mid-ocean ridge basalt) from other mid-ocean rifts, and are depleted in the light-REE. The transition in tholeiite geochemistry from intraplate tholeiite to MORB is attributed to progressive fusion of more refractory mantle components. Incipient-rift tholeiites are derived from selective fusion of clinopyroxenite veins, and with continued melting, N-MORB are formed by fusion of peridotite. This tholeiite sequence reflects the evolution of mantle source regions in rifts that sustain an ensialic to oceanic transition.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The gulf and peninsular province of the Californias","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","doi":"10.1306/M47542C17","usgsCitation":"Sawlan, M.G., 1991, Magmatic evolution of the Gulf of California rift, chap. 17 <i>of</i> The gulf and peninsular province of the Californias, v. 47, p. 301-369, https://doi.org/10.1306/M47542C17.","productDescription":"69 p.","startPage":"301","endPage":"369","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":416499,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico","state":"Baja California, Baja California Sur","otherGeospatial":"Baja Peninsula, Gulf of California","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.11761402297938,\n 29.66542404561862\n ],\n [\n -113.13588379096325,\n 28.291512833781113\n ],\n [\n -112.93843137863928,\n 27.707433162738027\n ],\n [\n -111.76652147101399,\n 26.37583166098503\n ],\n [\n -110.90035663709921,\n 24.86120843654207\n ],\n [\n -110.94781207235468,\n 24.69915648754764\n ],\n [\n -110.53709692870075,\n 24.06326726571949\n ],\n [\n -109.88008548894408,\n 23.77056686691111\n ],\n [\n -109.42854797301953,\n 22.9076570229779\n ],\n [\n -108.77643128559652,\n 22.118242044095823\n ],\n [\n -106.63476070755956,\n 20.5680459094\n ],\n [\n -105.79728842041806,\n 20.3379651299596\n ],\n [\n -105.33557345228797,\n 21.23910229067502\n ],\n [\n -106.1108120686608,\n 21.74590578481289\n ],\n [\n -106.2346305444367,\n 22.777327556142723\n ],\n [\n -107.37174239542028,\n 23.951294201744858\n ],\n [\n -107.94193696602315,\n 24.251762343390283\n ],\n [\n -107.98068921445869,\n 24.65016113071262\n ],\n [\n -109.14012751789545,\n 25.41926335029882\n ],\n [\n -109.5507160196502,\n 25.99369731040028\n ],\n [\n -109.5888128852607,\n 26.437093521138024\n ],\n [\n -110.0779911737311,\n 26.872924004371214\n ],\n [\n -110.77501145330504,\n 27.787847238840328\n ],\n [\n -112.07434376373047,\n 28.458492088806537\n ],\n [\n -112.50531551906553,\n 29.1534290559634\n ],\n [\n -112.95843616290122,\n 29.75646217632797\n ],\n [\n -113.39527009235943,\n 29.942568100779283\n ],\n [\n -113.70180518480888,\n 30.38741645189097\n ],\n [\n -113.89717168044783,\n 30.64444794423875\n ],\n [\n -114.46304574515301,\n 30.203102936563056\n ],\n [\n -114.11761402297938,\n 29.66542404561862\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"47","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Dauphin, J.
