This belt is shown on Plate I, and its location is shown on figure 5, a key map of this region. It comprises parts of Pike, Howard, and Sevier counties and a narrow strip of Hemp- stead County, in southwestern Arkansas, and a strip along the east edge of McCurtain County, in southeastern Oklahoma. The gravels are of Lower Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous, and Quaternary age, and are composed mainly of pebbles of novaculite (a variety of chert) derived from the Arkansas novaculite exposed in the Ouachita Mountain region, which is north of the Gulf Coastal Plain. They are used in making concrete, in ballasting railroads, and in the construction of wagon roads. Very small quantities of pebbles are also used in the washing plant of the Kimberlite Diamond Mining & Washing Co., at Murfreesboro, to assist in the disintegration of the altered peridotite which carries the diamonds.

Interest in possible American sources of flint pebbles or substitutes therefor to be used in tube mills, in which minerals, ores, cement materials, and clinker are extensively ground in this country, has been aroused since the beginning of the present world war. This interest is due to the partial interruption of imports of flint pebbles from Denmark and France, which have supplied most of the pebbles used in this country. The main reasons for the preparation of this report are to present a description of the gravels under discussion and to indicate the possibility of their use in tube mills.

The information for this report is the result of detailed field studies in the Caddo Gap and De Queen quadrangles by the authors in 1908 and 1911 and by the senior author in 1912 and 1916. Mr. E, D. Mesler rendered valuable assistance in 1912. Much of the information is abstracted from the De Queen-Caddo Gap folio, which is nearing completion.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to economic geology, 1918, Part I, Metals and nonmetals except fuel (Bulletin 690)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/b690B","usgsCitation":"Miser, H.D., and Purdue, A.H., 1919, Gravel deposits of the Caddo Gap and De Queen quadrangles, Arkansas: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 690, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b690B.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"15","endPage":"29","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":402063,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_20277.htm"},{"id":135942,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/0690b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":114186,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/0690b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Arkansas, Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Caddo Gap quadrangle, De Queen quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.5,\n              34.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5,\n              34.167\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.5,\n              34\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.5,\n              34.167\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af3e4b07f02db691bad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miser, Hugh D.","contributorId":32508,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miser","given":"Hugh","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":231657,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Purdue, Albert Homer","contributorId":102943,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Purdue","given":"Albert","email":"","middleInitial":"Homer","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":231658,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Here was the home of that forgotten people of which there is almost no record except the hieroglyphics on the rocks, the ruins of their irrigation systems, and the cliff dwellings by which they are most widely known; here were Spanish missions whose history extends back nearly to the days of Balboa and Cortez; here is the Grand Canyon, whose sublimity was first fully disclosed by Maj. Powell and his associates, who navigated it from end to end in 1869 and 1872; here are the greatest known natural bridges, so remote and inaccessible that they have only recently been discovered; here is the mighty river and its tributaries, as yet largely undeveloped, affording possibilities of extensive use for water power in its many canyons and for irrigation in its desert valleys, which need only the life-giving water to make them productive and valuable. We are interested in its mysteries, its traditions, its history, and its possible future; in the fascination of its deserts, whose immensity awes us; in the grandeur of its mountains, from the highest peaks of the Rockies on the east to the beauties of the Uinta and Wasatch mountains on the west; in the wonders of its canyons, perhaps the most famous in the world; in the range of its climate, from its short and cold summer season in Wyoming, where frosts may occur in every month of the year, to the subtropical temperatures of the valleys of Arizona, where the growing season never ends.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp395","usgsCitation":"La Rue, E.C., and Grover, N., 1916, Colorado River and its utilization: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 395, Report: 231 p.; 8 Plates: 34.00 x 34.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp395.","productDescription":"Report: 231 p.; 8 Plates: 34.00 x 34.00 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"236","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":27608,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-3.pdf","text":"Plate XIII","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Map of Colorado River drainage basin"},{"id":27612,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-7.pdf","text":"Plate XVI","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Diagram showing mean monthly discharge, in second-feet, of Colorado River at Hardyville, Ariz., and the demand for the irrigation of 2,734,000 acres below Virgin River; headgate duty, 5 acre-feet"},{"id":138431,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27613,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-8.pdf","text":"Plate XX","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Map of Colorado River and its tributaries showing volume of discharge"},{"id":27614,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27610,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-5.pdf","text":"Plate XV","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Map showing constructed and proposed diversions from Colorado River basin to Mississippi River basin"},{"id":27606,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate XI","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Reconaissance map of the Colorado River betweel Bulls Head Rock and Cibola Valley"},{"id":27607,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-2.pdf","text":"Plate XII","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Map of lower Colorado River showing irrigable lands below Cibola Valley"},{"id":27611,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-6.pdf","text":"Plate XVI","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Diagram showing mean monthly discharge, in second-feet, of Colorado River at Hardyville, Ariz., and the demand for the irrigation of 2,734,000 acres below Virgin River; headgate duty, 5 acre-feet"},{"id":27609,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/0395/plate-4.pdf","text":"Plate XXIV","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Chart showing daily discharge, in second-feet, of Colorado River at Yuma, Ariz., 1902-1915, and storage required to regulate flow to 50,000 second-feet or less"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Colorado River","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae889","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"La Rue, Eugene Clyde","contributorId":30606,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"La Rue","given":"Eugene","email":"","middleInitial":"Clyde","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144622,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Grover, Nathan C.","contributorId":11583,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grover","given":"Nathan C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":710063,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The nature of these processes has been studied in many parts of the globe, but owing to the large size of the units affected and the slowness of the processes there has been little opportunity to collect quantitative data. Indeed, the data available are very largely conjectural, their degree of accuracy being only that of good guessing. However, with the advent of accurate topographic and hydrographic surveys, the first steps toward actual measurements of some of the many interesting surficial changes that are in progress have been taken, and it only remains for time and additional observations to afford opportunities for comparison. Resurveys, particularly by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, of parts of the eastern coast of the United States at different intervals have shown in many places marked changes of both shore line and sea bottom, as on Cape Cod, on Nantucket Island, and in Delaware Bay. Comparisons of this kind have so far been incidental to work in engineering and coast surveying, so that there has been little opportunity for the selection of localities particularly adapted to studies of erosion and sedimentation.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Shorter contributions to general geology, 1914","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","doi":"10.3133/pp90B","usgsCitation":"Hunter, J.F., 1915, Erosion and sedimentation in Chesapeake Bay around the mouth of Choptank River: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 90, 9 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp90B.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"7","endPage":"15","numberOfPages":"10","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":165134,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0090b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271182,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0090b/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland","otherGeospatial":"Chesapeake Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.36285259897089,\n              38.761628890380706\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.36285259897089,\n              38.48630398130953\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.20024620747903,\n              38.48630398130953\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.20024620747903,\n              38.761628890380706\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.36285259897089,\n              38.761628890380706\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdf93","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hunter, J. The new data pertain partly to the relations existing in the Gunnison Valley, north of the San Juan Mountains, where the unconformity marking this break was already known at certain places, and partly to the conditions in the Piedra Valley, on the south side of the mountains, where the unconformity had not before been noted. The Piedra Valley is of special interest, and it seems well to call attention to the relations observed even though they were examined only in a reconnaissance. The first part of this paper is devoted to the evidence of the overlap of the La Plata sandstone; the second to the stratigraphic relations \nin the Piedra Valley. The section of sedimentary formations in Piedra Canyon is of much interest because none of the pre-La Plata formations are known east of this locality on the south side of the San Juan Mountains. Most of these formations exhibit a notably different facies where they reappear from beneath the overlying beds at their nearest exposures in New Mexico, southeast of the Piedra Valley. It is believed that the character of the formations in the Piedra section should be recorded for the benefit of geologists who may be studying the Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks of New Mexico, and accordingly the second part of the paper presents details of the structure and the stratigraphic section of Piedra Valley.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Shorter contributions to general geology, 1914","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","doi":"10.3133/pp90E","usgsCitation":"Cross, W., and Larsen, E.S., 1915, Contributions to the stratigraphy of southwestern Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 90, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp90E.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"39","endPage":"50","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":165135,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0090e/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271183,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0090e/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"San Juan Region","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.8051,37.0476 ], [ -108.8051,37.9054 ], [ -106.0216,37.9054 ], [ -106.0216,37.0476 ], [ -108.8051,37.0476 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae6e4b07f02db68b280","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cross, Whitman","contributorId":58308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cross","given":"Whitman","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":221475,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Larsen, E. In fact, the writer's attention was primarily attracted to this field by the diversity of opinion regarding the antecedent origin of Green River. Although the present paper deals mainly with that portion of Yampa River east of Juniper Mountain, the conclusions reached are believed to have a definite bearing on the Green River problem itself. The paper is introduced by a brief discussion of the structural features of the region east of the Uinta Mountains, for a clear understanding of the relation of the minor uplifts to the great Uinta fold will better enable the reader to appreciate the possible bearing which the writer's conclusions may have in the solution of that problem.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Shorter contributions to general geology, 1914","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","doi":"10.3133/pp90K","usgsCitation":"Hancock, E., 1915, The history of a portion of Yampa River, Colorado, and its possible bearing on that of Green River: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 90, 7 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp90K.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"183","endPage":"189","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":165136,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0090k/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271188,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0090k/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Yampa River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109,40.25 ], [ -109,40.75 ], [ -107.5,40.75 ], [ -107.5,40.25 ], [ -109,40.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8fe4b07f02db6555ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hancock, E.T.","contributorId":70740,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hancock","given":"E.T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":221477,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
