New K‐Ar age data suggest that the belt was a significant locus of extrusive volcanism between the voluminous pyroclastic Whakamaru eruption(s), and the onset of caldera formation at Maroa, during which time it marked the western boundary of rhyolitic volcanism in Taupo Volcanic Zone. The Quaternary history of few of these basins has been studied as intensively as that of the surrounding mountain ranges, despite the wealth of fluvial and other types of deposits present in the basins and the potential for dating them. The areas discussed here include the Bighorn Basin in Wyoming and Montana, the Laramie Basin and part of the Sweetwater River Basin in Wyoming, the Yampa River Basin in Colorado, and the Uinta Basin in Utah (Fig. 1). Small parts of the Great Plains and Colorado Plateau physiographic provinces are included in this discussion. Even though the evidence is not clear, the authors prefer to have the protolith for the BCA formed in a back‐arc basin contemporaneously as part of the Josephine Ophiolite during late Callovian to early Oxfordian. Although major rearrangement of some of the chemical elements took place during metamorphism, it is possible, by use of major and rare earth elements, to suggest that the BCA formed in an oceanic spreading centre rather than an island arc setting. Meta‐morphic mineral assemblages and composition of the hornblendes indicate that metamorphism attained amphibolite facies grade.</p><p>Widespread occurrence of allochthonous blocks of BCA in Western Oregon indicate that its dispersion following metamorphism can be related to the accretionary history of the continental margin. Westward thrusting of these blocks of BCA over the Chetco Arc during the Nevadan orogenic event provided blocks that slid into the outboard active Early Cretaceous trench. These blocks were then incorporated into the downgoing subduction complex and overprinted by high P/T metamorphic assemblages. The hypothesis has been advanced that GLEMEDS in colonial fish-eating birds resembles chick-edema disease of poultry and has been caused by exposure to chick- edema active compounds that have a common mode of action through the cytochrome P-448 system. The flow responds to shape and size characteristics of both the erosional pathway and the morphology of previous deposits; these, in turn, reflect factors such as basin size, shape, and tectonic activity. The initiation of turbidity currents generally involves either transformation from mass failures or one of a variety of fluid-flow events involving ignitive flow. The variability of these initiating processes with geologic setting is illustrated by analysis of three case studies involving 1) initiation by storm surge on a carbonate-reef slope, 2) a seismically triggered failure of a line source within midslope sediment, and 3) a bedload delta showing both hyperpycnal flow of river bedload and failure of unstable prodelta sediment. General criteria for the initiation of turbidity currents are given.</p><p>Depositional and erosional features of the turbidite deposits themselves allow recognition of changes in flow processes as the turbidity currents traverse the basin. High-concentration basal flow beneath the main turbulent turbidity current will leave a distinctive depositional record from more energetic flow, particularly in proximal and channel settings. Turbidity currents of different sizes and sediment distribution interact quite differently with local fan morphology. Many large, muddy turbidity currents are much thicker than levee-channel relief; the upper parts of such flows are \"stripped off\" across levees and can become rechannelized farther downslope. in restricted basins, the basin margin acts like a channel wall for larger flows, thus maintaining competence over long distances. Thinner, sandier flows flush out channel systems, and a large proportion of sediment in some turbidite deposits may be derived from bed erosion. A broad range of local bedforms, especially sediment waves and scours, reflects changes in the character of turbulence and competence within quasi-steady flows. This paper emphasizes the broad range of size, sediment distribution, and depositional processes in turbidity currents that largely reflects the variety of initiation processes. Through theoretical considerations and evaluation of examples from the literature and our own studies in California and Italy, we have examined the conditions that lead both to the formation and preservation of these deposits.</p><p>Coastal downlapping deposits form by progradation of coastal and deltaic lithosomes during stable and falling sea level. in addition to the rate and direction of sea-level change, the major controls governing the development of downlapping deposits are sediment availability and shelf morphology (gradient, surface irregularity, and depth of shelf break). Continental margins receiving a large, continuous supply of sediment commonly have vertical stacks of thick, laterally extensive deposits; those fed by relatively small coastal streams may have well-developed shelf-margin deposits if accommodation space was available. in the absence of feeder streams, shelf-margin downlapping deposits can form from locally derived sediment.</p><p>Regressive coastal deposits are preserved in a variety of settings, but they are<span>&nbsp;</span><i>least</i><span>&nbsp;</span>likely to be preserved on broad, low-gradient (coastal plain) shelves, where small drops in relative sea level were accompanied by large seaward shifts of the shoreline. Even on high-gradient tectonic margins, downlapping deposits commonly are not preserved on the midshelf. The process of shoreface erosion during a transgression is efficient at planing off deposits from previous depositional cycles. Where the deposits are thin, the deposit is partially or wholly reworked; where they are thick, the basal part may be preserved.</p><p>Regressive deposits are<span>&nbsp;</span><i>most</i><span>&nbsp;</span>likely to be preserved along the shelf margin, where relatively thick sequences form at or below the position of the lowstand sea level. On many continental shelves, the coarse sandy texture of outer-shelf sediment largely reflects original deposition in a regressive coastal environment during a fall and lowstand of relative sea Examination of the periphyton revealed it consisted primarily of structurally complex, diverse, diatom communities, but occasional small thalli of the green algae&nbsp;</span><i>Cladophora</i><span>&nbsp;and</span><i>Stigeoclonium</i><span>&nbsp;were also noted. Extensive windrows of detritus-like material, apparently derived from the local periphyton community, were seen on soft bottoms at depths of about 20 to 60 m near the reefs. Zooplankton were collected by vertical hauls in 1987&ndash;1988 and fish with a rock-hopper trawl. Although copepods (calanoid and cyciopoid) were the major zooplankton in the plankton samples, they were not well represented in the fish diet. From 1985 through 1988, Cladocera became an increasingly important food &ndash; particularly a recent invader from Europe,&nbsp;</span><i>Bythotrephes cederstroemi</i><span>. It was a major component in the diet of yellow perch from June to October in both 1987 and 1988.
