The Page impsonite formed from low-temperature alteration of crude oil. Mean maximum bitumen reflectance in oil immersion (</span><span class=\"math\"><span id=\"MathJax-Element-1-Frame\" class=\"MathJax_SVG\" data-mathml=\"<math xmlns=&quot;http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML&quot;><mtext>R</mtext><msub><mi></mi><mn><mtext>max</mtext></mn></msub></math>\"><span class=\"MJX_Assistive_MathML\">R<sub>max</sub></span></span></span><span>) of seven samples is 1.41–1.96%. Mean apparent bireflectance of these samples is 0.15–0.54%. Examination of the periphyton revealed it consisted primarily of structurally complex, diverse, diatom communities, but occasional small thalli of the green algae&nbsp;</span><i>Cladophora</i><span>&nbsp;and</span><i>Stigeoclonium</i><span>&nbsp;were also noted. Extensive windrows of detritus-like material, apparently derived from the local periphyton community, were seen on soft bottoms at depths of about 20 to 60 m near the reefs. Zooplankton were collected by vertical hauls in 1987&ndash;1988 and fish with a rock-hopper trawl. Although copepods (calanoid and cyciopoid) were the major zooplankton in the plankton samples, they were not well represented in the fish diet. From 1985 through 1988, Cladocera became an increasingly important food &ndash; particularly a recent invader from Europe,&nbsp;</span><i>Bythotrephes cederstroemi</i><span>. It was a major component in the diet of yellow perch from June to October in both 1987 and 1988. It is the first freshwater red alga to be found in the Great Lakes and the only red alga ever found on an offshore reef in the Great Lakes. Histological sectioning of mussel gonads collected throughout the year showed that gametogenesis for both sexes began in late spring and continued into early autumn; fertilization began in late March. Glochidial development in the outer gills of females required 3-5 wk. Judged by biweekly samples of stream drift, glochidia were released from mid-April through July. Six species of cyprinids, collected between May and September 1979, were naturally infested with amblemine glochidia. Induced infestations of putative fish hosts in the laboratory confirmed five host species: whitetail shiner (<i>Notropis galacturus</i>), common shiner (<i>N. cornutus</i>), river chub (<i>Nocomis micropogon</i>), stoneroller (<i>Campostoma anomalum</i>) and fantail darter (<i>Etheostoma flabellare</i>).</div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Notre
