You can greatly assist the diagnostic process by providing a thorough history with specimens yo submit. This information is also of value in understanding the natural history of disease outbreaks, and is difficult if not impossible to obtain after the event has occurred. Detailed field observations during the course of a die-off and investigation of significant events preceding it also provide valuable information on which to base corrective actions. Remember, the most helpful information is that which obtained at the time of the event by a sensitive and aware observer.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Field guide to wildlife diseases: volume 1. The interval cored spans the palynologically defined Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, which is marked by a distinctive noble metal–bearing claystone in the Raton basin. Azimuthal orientation of the cores can be recovered both from the average directions of the most stable components of the remanent magnetization, with a root mean square error of 28°, and from the average direction of secondary components of magnetization removed by thermal and alternating field demagnetization, with a root mean square error of 33°. The natural remanent magnetization of about 95 percent of the core is dominated by a secondary normal polarity component. Polarity of the characteristic magnetization of each core, interpreted from 12 to 14 samples per core run, is reversed. No evidence of normal polarity characteristic magnetization was found in the 30-m (100-ft) interval sampled. The characteristic magnetization probably is a depositional remanent magnetization acquired during chron 29r. The noble metal–bearing boundary claystone in the Raton basin is interpreted to be part of a synchronous global deposit laid down at the end of the Cretaceous period.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary in the San Juan and Raton Basins, New Mexico and Colorado","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/SPE209-p131","usgsCitation":"Shoemaker, E.M., Pillmore, C., and Peacock, E.W., 1987, Remanent magnetization of rocks of latest Cretaceous and earliest Tertiary age from drill core at York Canyon, New Mexico, chap. <i>of</i> The Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary in the San Juan and Raton Basins, New Mexico and Colorado: Special Papers of the Geological Society of America, v. 209, p. 131-150, https://doi.org/10.1130/SPE209-p131.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"131","endPage":"150","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394587,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Raton basin, York Canyon","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.94964599609374,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.8040771484375,\n              36.569217971443635\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.58709716796875,\n              36.6992553955527\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.50469970703125,\n              36.787291466820015\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.44427490234375,\n              36.89719446989036\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.490966796875,\n              36.99597205450302\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.14465332031249,\n              37.00035919622158\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.1776123046875,\n              36.87962060502676\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.19958496093749,\n              36.78069226486259\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.1556396484375,\n              36.62875385775956\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.09246826171875,\n              36.575835338491764\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.94964599609374,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"209","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1987-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shoemaker, Eugene Merle","contributorId":20342,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shoemaker","given":"Eugene","email":"","middleInitial":"Merle","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":831293,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pillmore, Charles L.","contributorId":27123,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pillmore","given":"Charles L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":831294,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Peacock, Edward W.","contributorId":271707,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Peacock","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":831295,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Most of the terranes have distinct and well-defined signatures in terms of isotopic composition; thus, most can be distinguished on conventional lead isotopic diagrams. Lead isotopic ratios provide evidence for (1) possible sources for the igneous rocks, (2) time of metamorphism, (3) correlation of terrane fragments, and (4) delineation of juxtaposed terranes. Determination of lead isotopic ratios from igneous rocks can be useful in characterizing tectono-stratigraphic terranes (as to mantle or crustal origin) and in correlation, particularly where terrane relationships are enigmatic.</p></div></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/e87-198","usgsCitation":"Aleinikoff, J.N., Dusel-Bacon, C., Foster, H.L., and Nokleberg, W.J., 1987, Lead isotopic fingerprinting of tectono-stratigraphic terranes, east-central Alaska: Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, v. 24, no. 10, p. 2089-2098, https://doi.org/10.1139/e87-198.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"2089","endPage":"2098","costCenters":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":370471,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -159.78515624999997,\n              61.77312286453146\n            ],\n            [\n              -141.50390625,\n              61.77312286453146\n            ],\n            [\n              -141.50390625,\n              69.28725695167886\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.78515624999997,\n              69.28725695167886\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.78515624999997,\n              61.77312286453146\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"24","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Aleinikoff, John N. 0000-0003-3494-6841 jaleinikoff@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3494-6841","contributorId":1478,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aleinikoff","given":"John","email":"jaleinikoff@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":777972,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dusel-Bacon, Cynthia 0000-0001-8481-739X cdusel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8481-739X","contributorId":2797,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dusel-Bacon","given":"Cynthia","email":"cdusel@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":777973,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Foster, Helen Laura","contributorId":21936,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Foster","given":"Helen","email":"","middleInitial":"Laura","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":777974,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Nokleberg, Warren J. 0000-0002-1574-8869 wnokleberg@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1574-8869","contributorId":2077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nokleberg","given":"Warren","email":"wnokleberg@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":777975,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

During winter 1982–83, measurement of precipitation inputs, snowpack concentration and loading, and streamwater concentration and discharge of Ca2+, K+, H+, NO3−, and SO42− from a 176-ha watershed reveals that only H+ might be lost from the snowpack before first thaw. Above-freezing soil temperature beneath the snowpack may be a factor in H+ loss. An initial 1-d thaw resulted in loss of over one third (6 eq∙ha−1) of the snowpack Ca2+. Over one half the snowpack load of K+, H+, NO3−, and SO42−, was lost in a subsequent midwinter freeze–thaw period. Snowpack loading of ionic species was reduced by 70–90% before peak spring melting and stream discharge. Ecosystem H+ retention and biological uptake of NO3− further mitigate ionic \"pulses\" in streamwater. Sulfate discharge exceeds bulk inputs, which suggests significant dry deposition input and little forest soil retention of this anion. The snowpack was relatively small, which limits wider application of these results to the region.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"National Research Council of Canada]","publisherLocation":"Ottawa","doi":"10.1139/f87-225","usgsCitation":"Stottlemyer, R., 1987, Snowpack ion accumulation and loss in a basin draining to Lake Superior: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, v. 44, no. 11, p. 1812-1819, https://doi.org/10.1139/f87-225.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"1812","endPage":"1819","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":292838,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":292837,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1139/f87-225"}],"country":"Canada;United States","otherGeospatial":"Lake Superior","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -92.1122,46.41 ], [ -92.1122,49.0195 ], [ -84.3544,49.0195 ], [ -84.3544,46.41 ], [ -92.1122,46.41 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"44","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53f8598fe4b03f038c5c191c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stottlemyer, Robert","contributorId":97058,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stottlemyer","given":"Robert","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":499117,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Five 16-ha plots served as controls and 5 were fenced and fall-grazed October-November 1982-84 following a season of pre-treatment study in the spring of 1982. We focused our analysis on bird species directly dependent on the grass-herb-shrub layer of vegetation for foraging, nesting, or both. The guild included house wren (<i>Troglodytes aedon</i>), brown thrasher (<i>Toxostoma rufum</i>), American robin (<i>Turdus migratorius</i>), common yellowthroat (<i>Geothlypis trichas</i>), yellow-breasted chat (<i>Icteria virens</i>), and rufous-sided towhee (<i>Pipilo erythropthalmus</i>). Moderate, late-fall grazing had no detectable impact on calculated densities of any of the 6 species, implying that proper seasonal grazing of a cottonwood floodplain is, at least initially (3 years), compatible with migratory bird use of a site for breeding. Habitat associations suggested that common yellowthroats and yellow-breasted chats were most unique and most likely to respond negatively to higher levels of grazing. We suggest that these latter 2 species are appropriate ecological indicators of the quality of ground-shrub vegetation as breeding bird habitats in lowland floodplains of the Great Plains.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Wildlife Management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.2307/3801661","usgsCitation":"Sedgwick, J., and Knopf, F., 1987, Breeding bird response to cattle grazing of a cottonwood bottomland: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 51, no. 1, p. 230-237, https://doi.org/10.2307/3801661.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"230","endPage":"237","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":292934,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":292932,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.2307/3801661"}],"volume":"51","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53fc4dc5e4b0413fd75d6a61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sedgwick, James A.","contributorId":55350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sedgwick","given":"James A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":499267,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Knopf, Fritz L.","contributorId":30549,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knopf","given":"Fritz L.","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":499266,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Pitfall arrays had a pronounced removal effect on small mammals (but not on the herpetofauna) during the 1st 60 days of trapping. Conventional short (10-day) trapping periods were only adequate to detect the most common mammals. About 60 days were needed to compile a relatively complete species list (>85% of species captured) at each site. Reptiles were caught almost exclusively in the summer; amphibian captures were correlated with increased precipitation in the fall. Short (2.5-m) drift fences were less effective than the standard length of 5 m. Funnel traps captured few forest vertebrates. Pitfalls captured more insectivorous mammals than did snap traps, but snap traps were more effective for a few cricetid rodents. Pitfall arrays are adaptable to many habitats and can help assess the presence of small vertebrates, such as shrews and amphibians, that are undersampled by other techniques.","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3801640","usgsCitation":"Bury, R.B., and Corn, P., 1987, Evaluation of pitfall trapping in northwestern forests: Trap arrays with drift fences: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 51, no. 1, p. 112-119, https://doi.org/10.2307/3801640.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"112","endPage":"119","costCenters":[{"id":65563,"text":"Northwest Pacific Islands Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":292814,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon, Washington","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -124.96,41.99 ], [ -124.96,49.01 ], [ -119.98,49.01 ], [ -119.98,41.99 ], [ -124.96,41.99 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"51","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53f85959e4b03f038c5c1803","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bury, R. Annual deposition of H, NO<sub>3</sub> and SO<sub>4</sub> (0.045, 3.6, and 3.9 kg ha<sup>−1</sup> a<sup>−1</sup>, respectively) is relatively low compared to that measured in the eastern United States, or in the urban Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. Weekly ion concentrations are highly variable. Maximum concentrations of 324,162, and 156 μeq <i>ol</i><sup>−1</sup> of H, NO<sub>3</sub> and SO<sub>4</sub> have been recorded for one low volume summer storm (1.4 mm). Summer concentrations of NO<sub>3</sub> and SO<sub>4</sub> average two and five times higher, respectively, than concentrations reported for remote areas in the world. Samples as large as 24,500 L have been processed on site by using these resins. Two established extraction schemes using XAD-8 and Duolite A-7 resins are described. The choice of the appropriate resin and extraction scheme is dependent on the organic solutes of interest. The factors that affect resin performance, selectivity, and capacity for a particular solute are solution pH, resin surface area and pore size, and resin composition. The logistical problems of sample handling, filtration, and preservation are also discussed.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Organic pollutants in water: sampling, analysis, and toxicity testing","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.1021/ba-1987-0214.ch013","usgsCitation":"Aiken, G.R., 1987, Isolation of organic acids from large volumes of water by adsorption on macroporous resins, chap. <i>of</i> Organic pollutants in water: sampling, analysis, and toxicity testing, v. 214, p. 295-307, https://doi.org/10.1021/ba-1987-0214.ch013.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"295","endPage":"307","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":280827,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":280826,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ba-1987-0214.ch013"}],"volume":"214","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2009-07-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd6342e4b0b290850feacc","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Suffet, I.H.","contributorId":77424,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Suffet","given":"I.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509673,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Malaiyandi, Murugan","contributorId":112777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Malaiyandi","given":"Murugan","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509674,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Aiken, George R. 0000-0001-8454-0984 graiken@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8454-0984","contributorId":1322,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aiken","given":"George","email":"graiken@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":488037,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
