Louisiana's wetlands also have the highest rates of coastal erosion and wetland loss in the nation. While numerous studies across many disciplines have been conducted on both local and regional scales, no complete inventory exists for this information. The Louisiana Coastal Geographic Information System Network (LCGISN) is currently being developed to facilitate access to existing data for coastal zone planners, managers, and researchers. The Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS), in cooperation with the LSU Department of Geography and Anthropology, the Computer Aided Design and Geographic Information Systems Research Laboratory (CADGIS), and others, is pursuing this project under the terms of a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey. LCGISN is an automated system for searching and retrieving geographic, cartographic, and bibliographic data. By linking original programming with an existing GIS software package and an industry standard relational database management system, LCGISN will provide the capability for users to search for data references by interactively defining the area of interest on a displayed map/image reference background. Several agencies will be networked to provide easy access to a wide variety of information. LCGISN, with its headquarters at LGS, will serve as the central node on the network, providing data format conversions, projection and datum transformations, and storage of several of the most commonly used data sets. Thematic mapper data, USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle map boundaries, political and legal boundaries, major transportation routes, and other digital data will provide a base map to aid the user in selecting the exact area of interest. Then, the user will set search criteria by proceeding through a series of menu-driven options. The system will then return any or all of the following: a list of digital maps or imagery that can be displayed immediately and visually overlayed, a list of maps/remotely sensed data and information on their availability, and a list of bibliographic references concerning the area and subject defined.","largerWorkTitle":"GIS/LIS 1991 Proceedings","conferenceTitle":"Proceedings of GIS/LIS '91","conferenceDate":"28 October 1991 through 1 November 1991","conferenceLocation":"Atlanta, GA, USA","language":"English","publisher":"Publ by ASPRS","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, MD, United States","isbn":"0944426751","usgsCitation":"Hiland, M., McBride, R., Davis, D., Braud, D., Streiffer, H., Jones, F., Lewis, A., and Williams, S., 1991, Louisiana coastal GIS network: Graphical user interface for access to spatial data, in GIS/LIS 1991 Proceedings, v. 2, Atlanta, GA, USA, 28 October 1991 through 1 November 1991, p. 845-856.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"845","endPage":"856","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":223579,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91.4501953125,\n              29.03215782622282\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.39599609375,\n              29.03215782622282\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.39599609375,\n              30.453409130203596\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.4501953125,\n              30.453409130203596\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.4501953125,\n              29.03215782622282\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a49ece4b0c8380cd689ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hiland, Matteson","contributorId":101390,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hiland","given":"Matteson","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370004,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McBride, Randolph A.","contributorId":48711,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McBride","given":"Randolph A.","affiliations":[{"id":5115,"text":"Louisiana State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":370000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Davis, Donald","contributorId":90471,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Davis","given":"Donald","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370003,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Braud, Dewitt","contributorId":66853,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Braud","given":"Dewitt","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Streiffer, Henry","contributorId":105057,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Streiffer","given":"Henry","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370005,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Jones, Farrell","contributorId":105860,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Farrell","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370006,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Lewis, Anthony","contributorId":67221,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lewis","given":"Anthony","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Williams, S.","contributorId":18514,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

During the pre-nesting period birds confined most of their activity to two vegetation communities: shrub meadow tundra and low shrub/tussock tundra. During nesting more than half the Curlews seen were observed on shrub meadow tundra, whilst during brood rearing, use of low shrub/tussock tundra continued to decline in importance as birds attending young increased their use of sedge wet meadows. Despite extensive searches no nests were located; however, observations of broods indicated that nest initiation began around 25 May and that hatching occurred during the last week of June. The NAPP is designed to acquire black-and-white (B&W) or color infrared (CIR) photography at a scale of 1:40,000. The status of NAPP flying, now going into the first year of its second 5-year cycle, is reviewed to inform the user community of NAPP's coverage. The resolution, geometric quality and flight parameters are used to estimate the system's cartographic potential to produce orthophotoquads, digital elevation models, topographic maps and digital information to meet national map accuracy standards at 1:12,000 and 1:24,000-scale and serve as a geographic information system resource. No floods with stages high enough to inundate the flood plain have occurred since 1980, and thus no flood-plain alluviation has occurred since then. Differences in the organic matter found in these regressive and transgressive offshore marine sediments have been documented and assessed within a sequence stratigraphic framework. The regressive Lower Mancos Shale below the Tocito Sandstone contains abundant well preserved phytoclasts and correspondingly low hydrogen indices. Total organic carbon values for the regressive shale are low. Sediments from the transgressive systems tract (Tocito Sandstone and overlying Upper Mancos Shale) contain less terrestrially derived organic matter, more amorphous non-structured protistoclasts, higher hydrogen indices and more total organic carbon. Advanced stages of degradation are characteristic of the phytoclasts found in the transgressive shale. Amorphous material in the transgressive shale fluoresces strongly while that found in the regressive shale is typically non-fluorescent. Data from pyrolysis-gas chromatography confirm these observations. These differences are apparently related to the contrasting depositional styles that were active on the shelf during regression and subsequent transgression. It is suggested that data from organic petrology and organic geochemistry provide greater resolution in sedimentologic and stratigraphic interpretations, particularly when working with basinward, fine-grained sediments. Petroleum source potential for the regressive Lower Mancos Shale below the Tocito Sandstone is poor. Based on abundant fluorescent amorphous material, high hydrogen indices, and high total organic carbon, the transgressive Upper Mancos Shale above the Tocito Sandstone possesses excellent source potential. This suggests that appreciable source potential can be found in offshore, fine-grained sediments of the transgressive systems tract below the condensed section and associated downlap surface. Organic petrology can be used to accurately predict petroleum source potential. The addition of simple fluorescence microscopy greatly enhances this predictive ability because non-generative amorphous material is generally non-fluorescent. Organic petrology must also be used to properly evaluate the utility of T<sub>max</sub> from programmed pyrolysis as a thermal maturity indicator. The intraplate stress field in both the oceans and continents is largely compressional with one or both of the horizontal stresses greater than the vertical stress. The regionally uniform horizontal intraplate stress orientations are generally consistent with either relative or absolute plate motions indicating that plate-boundary forces dominate the stress distribution within the plates. Current models of stresses due to whole mantle flow inferred from seismic topography models predict a general compressional stress state within continents but do not match the broad-scale horizontal stress orientations. The broad regionally uniform intraplate stress orientations are best correlated with compressional plate-boundary forces and the geometry of the plate boundaries. -from Authors","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Royal Society of London","doi":"10.1098/rsta.1991.0115","usgsCitation":"Zoback, M., and Magee, M., 1991, Stress magnitudes in the crust: constraints from stress orientation and relative magnitude data: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, v. 337, no. 1645, p. 181-194, https://doi.org/10.1098/rsta.1991.0115.","startPage":"181","endPage":"194","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224066,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":268614,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rsta.1991.0115"}],"volume":"337","issue":"1645","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9b5ee4b08c986b31ce28","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zoback, M.L.","contributorId":12982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zoback","given":"M.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369780,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Magee, M.","contributorId":53095,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Magee","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369781,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

All were apparently short-lived immigrants into the Bighorn Basin. The new genus and speciesTatmanius szalayi is typified by a diminutive single-rooted p3 and a bilobed-rooted p4 with a crown smaller than ml. These traits were probably derived fromPseudotetonius and parallel similar conditions inTrogolemur andNannopithex. The new speciesArapahovius advena is the first occurrence ofArapahovius outside the Washakie Basin, where it appears to have also been a vagrant species.Steinius annectens, sp. nov., is larger than the olderSteinius vespertinus and strengthens the alliance between this genus and BridgerianOraorays carteri, although which species ofSteinius is closer toOmomys is not yet clear. The available evidence suggests a derivation ofOmomys (Omomyini) fromSteinius and all Washakiini from the anaptomorphineTeilhardina, which would indicate that Omomyinae were at least diphyletic. Modeling of the eastern portion of the profile within the New England Appalachians shows a subhorizontal layered crust with upper crustal velocities ranging from 5.5 to 6.2 km/s, a midcrustal velocity of 6.4 km/s, and a lower crustal velocity of approximately 6.8 km/s. Crustal thickness increases from 36 km beneath Maine to 40 km in Vermont. This experiment provides further evidence for the obduction of the allochthonous western Appalachian units onto Grenvillian crust above the azone of detachment that penetrates at least to midcrustal depths and was the locus of successive Paleozoic thrusting. -from Authors","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Geophysical Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"01480227","usgsCitation":"Hughes, S., and Leutgert, J., 1991, Crustal structure of the western New England Appalachians and the Adirondack Mountains: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 96, no. The U is derived from granitic bedrock that underlies the entire drainage basin and that contains 9–16 ppm U. This local bedrock was studied by petrographic, chemical and isotopic methods to determine conditions of its petrogenesis and post-emplacement history that may have contributed to its present high U content and source-rock capability. The original magma was derived by anatexis of Precambrian continental crust of probable mixed metaigneous and metasedimentary character. Mineral-melt partitioning controlled the enrichment of U in chemically evolved phases of the crystallizing melt. Following emplacement in the upper crust at ∼100Ma, the pluton interacted with meteoric-hydrothermal water at ambient temperatures 300°C. Locally intense fracturing promoted alteration, and fracturing and alteration probably continued during later regional uplift in the Eocene. Regional uplift was followed by low-temperature alteration and weathering in the middle to late Tertiary. The combined result of hydrothermal alteration and low-temperature alteration and weathering was the redistribution of U from primary mineral hosts such as allanite to new sites on fracture surfaces and in secondary minerals such as hematite. Zones of highly fractured and altered rock show the most obvious evidence of this process. A model is proposed in which high-angle fractures beneath the drainage basin were the sites of Tertiary supergene enrichments of U. Recent glacio-isostatic uplift has elevated these older enriched zones to shallow levels where they are now being leached by oxidizing groundwater. The chemistry, mineralogy, texture and geological history of this U source-rock suggest criteria for locating other granitic terrane that may contain uraniferous waters and associated young surficial U deposits. The details of U distribution and mobility at this site also apply to the general topic of U mobility in granitic rocks.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0883-2927(91)90072-W","issn":"08832927","usgsCitation":"Zielinski, R.A., and Burruss, R., 1991, Petrogenesis and geological history of a uranium source rock: a case study in northeastern Washington, U.S.A.: Applied Geochemistry, v. 6, no. 6, p. 597-612, https://doi.org/10.1016/0883-2927(91)90072-W.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"597","endPage":"612","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224233,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.22382554690834,\n 49.027346995497425\n ],\n [\n -118.22382554690834,\n 47.02924516239534\n ],\n [\n -117.16913804690839,\n 47.02924516239534\n ],\n [\n -117.16913804690839,\n 49.027346995497425\n ],\n [\n -118.22382554690834,\n 49.027346995497425\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a777ee4b0c8380cd784e8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zielinski, R. Although originally described as parts of a coherent succession, we interpret the Grindstone rocks to be a sedimentary mélange composed of Paleozoic limestone slide and slump blocks that became detached from a carbonate shelf fringing a volcanic knoll or edifice in Late Permian to Middle Triassic time and were intermixed with Permian and Triassic slope to basinal clastic and volcaniclastic rocks in a forearc basin setting. Paleogeographic affinities of the Grindstone limestone faunas and volcaniclastic debris in the limestone and clastic rocks all indicate deposition in proximity to an island-arc system near the North American craton. The Grindstone terrane deposits are unconformably overlain by Upper Triassic to Middle Jurassic sequences of the Izee terrane. Although lithologic and faunal differences indicate that the Grindstone and Izee terranes together represent a tectonic block separate from the adjacent Baker terrane, all three terranes were juxtaposed by Late Triassic or Early Jurassic time.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1991)103<1280:EOAPTS>2.3.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Blome, C., and Nestell, M., 1991, Evolution of a Permo-Triassic sedimentary melange, Grindstone terrane, east-central Oregon: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 103, no. 10, p. 1280-1296, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1991)103<1280:EOAPTS>2.3.CO;2.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"1280","endPage":"1296","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223845,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.12329846456441,\n              46.219854158651515\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.23169690206423,\n              46.219854158651515\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.23169690206423,\n              42.80558500045737\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.12329846456441,\n              42.80558500045737\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.12329846456441,\n              46.219854158651515\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"103","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0d7be4b0c8380cd53044","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blome, C.D.","contributorId":60647,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blome","given":"C.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369743,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nestell, M.K.","contributorId":44296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nestell","given":"M.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369742,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A profile is, in effect, a limited subset of the standard. The best way to use the standard is to first define a profile containing a limited number of the standard's options and then to design encoding/decoding software around those options. Limiting the standard's optionality will make it easier to develop encoding/decoding software. The success of any standard depends upon acceptance by the user community. Accordingly, the development of a library of software tools is being coordinated by the U.S. Geological Survey. When complete, the library will assist users in interfacing with the standard. The software tools will include the capability to encode and decode specific vector data formats into and out of the standard's Vector Profile. With the formal National Institute of Standards and Technology review of the standard coming to a close on July 10, 1991, the likelihood that the standard will be approved as a Federal Information Processing Standard in early 1992 is high. Having such a standard in place is a great/step forward and will allow users to transfer digital spatial data sets in a variety of formats between dissimilar computer systems. The standard's conformance requirements must be understood by all Federal agencies distributing or using spatial data.","largerWorkTitle":"GIS/LIS 1991 ACSM-ASPRS Fall Convention","conferenceTitle":"1991 ACSM-ASPRS Fall Convention","conferenceDate":"28 October 1991 through 1 November 1991","conferenceLocation":"Atlanta, GA, USA","language":"English","publisher":"Publ by ASPRS","publisherLocation":"Bethesda, MD, United States","usgsCitation":"McDermott, M.H., and DeWitt, A., 1991, Spatial Data Transfer Standard and efforts to develop a federal Profile for Vector Data, in GIS/LIS 1991 ACSM-ASPRS Fall Convention, Atlanta, GA, USA, 28 October 1991 through 1 November 1991.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223907,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9417e4b08c986b31a86b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McDermott, Matthew H.","contributorId":33854,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McDermott","given":"Matthew","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369760,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"DeWitt, Anthony","contributorId":63962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeWitt","given":"Anthony","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":369761,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
