These reports and maps are the results of work carried out by Survey geologists on mineral deposits in the United States, Alaska, and Cuba during the war and the years immediately preceding the war. The lagoon, known as the Salt Chuck, opens into Kasaan Bay through a very narrow channel and can be entered by small boats and barges from an hour or so before until an hour or so after high tide. Steamers can operate to within about 5 miles of the entrance to the Salt Chuck. It occupies an area roughly 7 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide that trends northeastward parallel to the front of the Talkeetna Mountains to the north. The eastern part of the field is considered in this report. The western part has recently been described.</p><p>The two operating coal mines in the area, the Government-owned Eska mine and the privately owned Evan Jones mine, are served by a 23-mile branch line of the Alaska Railroad. DeCourcy Mountain (approximately 1700 feet high), the highest point in the area, lies among rolling hills southeast of the Iditarod River, a tributary of the Innoko. River which flows into the lower Yukon. The maximum relief is about 1300 feet. Timberline is at about 1100 feet above sea level. Spruce forests cover most of the country below timberline. The field is in an area bounded on the south by the Matanuska River, on the north by the foothills of the Talkeetna Mountains, and includes on the east and west, respectively, the valleys of Eska Creek and Moose Creek, which head in the Talkeetna Mountains and flow southward to the Matanuska River. Also included are the results of a brief examination of a nickel prospect near Sitka.</p><p>The field work, upon which this report is largely based, was done by the authors in the early part of August 1943 as a part of a Geological Survey project to investigate some of the ultrabasic rocks of southeastern Alaska to determine the presence or absence in them of significant nickel-copper or chromium deposits. The deposit is within 2,000 feet of tidewater in an area ranging in altitude from 50 feet to 200 feet. Outcrops are confined to stream valleys and to prospect cuts and trenches. Most of the area is covered with a veneer of vegetation, glacial drift, and alluvium.
