Lithologic and geophysical logs obtained from the deeper of two boreholes drilled in 1987 near Woodland, California, are presented. The results of geotechnical and hydraulic laboratory tests on four sediment core samples extracted at 137, 151, 301, and 474 feet below land surface from a third borehole, drilled in 1990, are also reported. Construction of the extensometer well and the piezometer wells and equipment installed in the boreholes are described and illustrated. Data measured or recorded at the Woodland land- subsidence monitoring station from December 1987 through September 1992 are presented in tabular and graphic formats. The method isolates the pesticides and PCBs by solvent extraction with dichlorobenzene, removes inorganic sulfur, large naturally occurring molecules, and other unwanted interferences by gel permeation chromatography, and further cleans up and class fractionates the extract using adsorption chromatography. The com- pounds then are instrumentally determined using dual capillary-column gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Reporting limits range from 1 to 5 micrograms per kilogram for 30 individual pesticides, 50 micrograms per kilogram for total PCBs, and 200 micrograms per kilogram for total toxaphene. The method also is designed to allow the simultaneous isolation of 79 other semivolatile organic compounds from the sediment, which are separately quantified using gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Elevations range from about 536.5 m (1,760 ft) at the Virgin River (south-central edge of quadrangle) to 975 m (3,200 ft) in the Beaver Dam Mountains (northeastern corner of quadrangle). Interstate Arizona Highway 15 and U.S. Highway 91 provides a general access to the quadrangle while several unimproved dirt roads lead to remote areas of the quadrangle. The community of Littlefield, Arizona is just southeast of Interstate 15 along the west bank of the Virgin River, and the community of Beaver Dam, Arizona is just northwest of Interstate 15 in the valley of Beaver Dam Wash (fig. 1). Population of both communities is about 300 people. The environment, topography, and geography is typical of the Mohave Desert of Nevada and California.</p><p>There are about 9 sections of private land in the quadrangle and 5 sections belonging to the state of Arizona. The balance is public land administrated by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Strip District in St. George, Utah. The area supports sparse growth of desert shrubs, mainly creosote bush and cactus. Dense growths of tamerisk (Salt Cedar), cottonwood, and willow trees thrive along the alluvial terraces and banks of the Virgin River. Severe earthquakes were generated by this fault zone in 1836 and in 1868, and several large earthquakes have been recorded since 1868. The Hayward fault zone is considered to be the most probable source of a major earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area, as much as 28% chance for a magnitude 7 earthquake before the year 2021 (Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities, 1990).</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The Hayward fault zone, as described in this work, is a zone of highly deformed rocks, trending north 30 degrees west and ranging in width from about 2 to 10 kilometers. The historic earthquake generating activity has been concentrated in the western portion of the zone, but the zone as a whole reflects deformation derived from oblique right-lateral and compressive tectonic stress along a significant upper crustal discontinuity for the past 10 million or more years.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The Hayward fault zone is bounded on the east by a series of faults that demarcate the beginning of one or more structural blocks containing rocks and structures unrelated to the Hayward fault zone. The eastern bounding faults are, from the south, the Calaveras, Stonybrook, Palomares, Miller Creek, and Moraga faults. These faults are not considered to be part of the Hayward fault zone, although they are shown on the map to demarcate its boundary. The western boundary of the zone is less clearly defined, because the alluvium of the San Francisco Bay and Santa Clara Valley basins obscures bedrock and structural relationships. Although several of the westernmost faults in the zone clearly project under or through the alluvium, the western boundary of the fault is generally considered to be the westernmost mapped fault, which corresponds more or less with the margin of thick unconsolidated surficial deposits. The Hayward fault zone is truncated to the south by the Calaveras fault, which trends about north 10 west, and so forms an oblique east and south boundary. All of the faults within the southern part of the zone probably splay into the Calaveras fault. Detailed mapping of these structures was undertaken to help elucidate regional Mesozoic structural evolution. Earlier geologic maps were prepared by Cooksley (1960a,b,c,d, generalized by Bishop, 1964) and Stone and others (1983). \r\n\r\nDeformed and metamorphosed Paleozoic and Triassic rocks form a stratal \r\nsuccession that was originally deposited in shallow seas on the North American craton. Based on lithologic sequence the units are correlated with unmetamorphosed equivalents 200 km to the northeast in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, and 35-50 km to the west in the Marble, Ship, and Providence Mountains, California (Stone and others, 1983). The Paleozoic sequence rests nonconformably on a heterogeneous basement of polydeformed Early Proterozoic gneiss (Miller and others, 1982; Wooden and Miller, 1990). The data were collected during various flow regimes of the river to evaluate the movement of agricultural chemicals between surface water and ground water. Water-quality samples from 34 surface-water sites and 95 ground-water sites were analyzed for 11 herbicides, 2 dealkylated atrazine metabolites, and nitrate. Specific conductance, pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen were measured at the time of sampling. Discharge and water-quality data from two seepage investigations were collected to identify gaining and losing reaches of the river and to help delineate where agricultural chemicals enter the river. The traverse started 10 km west of the Taylor Dome drill site and 25 km west of the exposed bedrock of the Transantarctic Mountains at Lashly Mt. and ended 323 km west of the drill site over the Wilkes subglacial basin (Fig. 1). The traverse was located subparallel to latitude 78° S starting 30-50 km north of the Victoria Land Traverse (1958-1959). It was carried out jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and Stanford University, U.S.A., together with the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, and Victoria University, New Zealand, during December 1993 and January 1994. The geophysical traverse included 236 km of multichannel seismic reflection data at 150 m shot intervals, 312.5 km of gravity data collected at intervals of 2.1 km, 312.5 km of magnetic data (total field intensity) collected at average intervals of 0.5 km, and 205 km of ground penetrating radar at intervals of 77 m. Relative locations and elevations of the entire traverse were measured at intervals of 150 m by traditional surveying methods, and tied to three absolute locations measured by the Global Positioning System (GPS). </p><p>EAST93 is the first large-scale geophysical traverse on the polar plateau to our knowledge since the early 1960s. As such, the experiment presented several logistical challenges: (1) how to collect regional seismic profiles during the short Antarctic summer; (2) how to keep the scientific instruments running with minimal protection in harsh conditions; and (3) how to combine daily moves of camp with full days of work. The scientific and logistical aspects of the project proceeded, in general, according to plan despite the harsh conditions and our lack of previous experience on the polar plateau. Two unanticipated problems affected the progress of the work: the strong wind which slowed seismic acquisition, and the break-down of one of the large traverse vehicles. The major operational lessons of this project are. (1) Primacord laid close to the surface is not an adequate seismic source for imaging under the thick East Antarctic ice sheet, despite positive prior tests on the Ross Ice Shelf.
