He was innovative in the use of field photography in fishery work, and the design and construction of capture nets and collecting gear. His detailed reports were important in documenting the conditions of the native ichthyofauna in Alaska, Arizona, and California at the turn of the century and have been heavily relied upon by subsequent investigators. Diel changes in spring and fall were about half those of summer when extensive macrophyte biomass apparently had a strong influence on dynamics of DO and pH. During summer, daily pulses averaged 5.45 mg/L DO and 0.88 pH units, and extreme diel changes were 10–14 mg/L DO and 2–3 pH units. Ambient values of DO and pH were directly related to each other as was the magnitude of their daily changes because in the low alkalinity water of Pool 1, pH as well as DO responded to photosynthesis and respiration. The model is based on probabilities of transition of particles among four different sediment storage reservoirs, called active (often mobilized), semiactive, inactive, and stable (hardly ever mobilized). The probabilities are derived from computed sediment residence times. Two aspects of sediment storage are investigated: flushing times of sediment out of a storage reservoir and changes in the quantity of sediment stored in different reservoirs due to seasonal sediment transport into, and out of, a reach. We apply the model to Redwood Creek, a gravel bed river in northern California. Although the Redwood Creek data set is incomplete, the application serves as an example of the sorts of analyses that can be done with the method. The application also provides insights into the sediment storage process. Sediment flushing times are highly dependent on the degree of interaction of the stable reservoir with the more mobile sediment reservoirs. The most infrequent and highest intensity storm events, which mobilize the stable reservoir, are responsible for the long-term shifts in sediment storage. Turnover times of channel sediment in all but the stable reservoir are on the order of 750 years, suggesting this is all the time needed for thorough interchange between these sediment compartments and cycling of most sediment particles from the initial reservoir to the ocean. Finally, the Markov model has adequately characterized sediment storage changes in Redwood Creek for 1947–1982, especially for the active reservoir. The model replicates field observation of the passage of a slug of sediment through the active reservoir of the middle reach of Redwood Creek in the 18 years following a major storm in 1964 that introduced large quantities of landslide debris to the channel.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR023i009p01738","usgsCitation":"Kelsey, H.M., Lamberson, R., and Madej, M.A., 1987, Stochastic model for the long-term transport of stored sediment in a river channel: Water Resources Research, v. 2, no. 9, p. 1738-1750, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR023i009p01738.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"1738","endPage":"1750","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130080,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Redwood Creek","volume":"2","issue":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4260","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kelsey, Harvey M.","contributorId":184057,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kelsey","given":"Harvey","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315811,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lamberson, Roland","contributorId":32027,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lamberson","given":"Roland","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315812,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Madej, Mary Ann 0000-0003-2831-3773 mary_ann_madej@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2831-3773","contributorId":40304,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Madej","given":"Mary","email":"mary_ann_madej@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"Ann","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":315810,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The effect of limited feed intake on growth, body composition, and potential for migration to the sea was investigated. Dilution of feed by 10‐40% with sodium bentonite was not effective in reducing growth; the fish used the nutrients more efficiently and their growth was nearly equal to that of controls. Hand feeding of a decreased ration reduced growth rate, but about a 50% reduction in feed was required to effect the desired reduction in growth rate. Fish were able to compensate for fasting periods of short duration and significant growth reduction did not occur until the fasting periods were 4 d or longer. They have summarized a large amount of data on the ages and distribution of volcanic centers along the central California coast; their summary clearly shows that the locus of volcanism migrated northwestward along the coast during at least the past 15 m.y. As Fox and others (1985) poin ted out, however, several of the volcanic centers that are older than 15 m.y. do not fit a simple model of northwestward-migrating volcanism. In the following comments, I offer additional information on the ages and locations of volcanic rocks in west-central California and then briefly discuss the revised data set and its implications for the late Oligocene and early Miocene history of the San Andreas transform. My purpose is to suggest that the sequential northwestward-migrating volcanism documented by Fox a nd others (1985) was preceded by an episode of nearly synchronous volcanism that occurred throughout west-central California about 22-24 m.y. ago.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1987)98<612:IOTNYA>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Stanley, R.G., 1987, Implications of the northwestwardly younger age of the volcanic rocks of west-central California: Alternative Interpretation: GSA Bulletin, v. 98, no. 5, p. 612-614, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1987)98<612:IOTNYA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"612","endPage":"614","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":354999,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"98","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5c113532e4b034bf6a8279aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stanley, Richard G. 0000-0001-6192-8783 rstanley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6192-8783","contributorId":1832,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stanley","given":"Richard","email":"rstanley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":737882,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

To test the generality of this relation, we compiled data from San Francisco Bay and 5 other USA estuarine systems (Neuse and South Rivers, Puget Sound, Delaware Bay and Hudson River Plume), and regressed daily produclvity J' P (mg C m-2 d-') against the composite parameter B Z, I,. Regressions for each estuary were significant and typically over 80 % of the varialon in P was correlated with variations in B Z,I,. Moreover, the pooled data (n = 211) from 4 estuaries where methodologies were comparable fell along one regression line (r2= 0.82), indicating that primary productivity can be estimated in a diversity of estuarine waters from simple measures of phytoplankton biomass and hght availability. This implies that physiological variabhty (e. g. responses to variations in nutrient availabhty, temperature, sahnity, photoperiod) is a secondary control on phytoplankton production in nutrient-rich estuaries, and that one empirical function can be used to estimate seasonal variations in productivity or to map productivity along estuarine gradients of phytoplankton biomass and turbidity.
","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research","usgsCitation":"Cole, B., and Cloern, J., 1987, An empirical model for estimating phytoplankton productivity in estuaries: Marine Ecology Progress Series, v. 396, p. 299-305.","productDescription":"7 p. Theoretical considerations","docAbstract":"
A mathematical model is developed to describe the fate of hydrocarbon constituents of petroleum products introduced to soils as an immiscible liquid from sources such as leaking underground storage tanks and ruptured pipelines. The problem is one of multiphase transport (oil (immiscible), air, and water phases) of a reactive contaminant with constituents such as benzene, toluene, and xylene found in refined petroleum products like gasoline. In the unsaturated zone, transport of each constituent can occur as a solute in the water phase, vapor in the air phase, and as an unaltered constituent in the oil phase. Additionally, the model allows for adsorption. Molecular transformations, microbially mediated or abiotic, are incorporated as sink terms in the conservation of mass equations. An equilibrium approximation, applicable to any immiscible organic contaminant is applied to partition constituent mass between the air, oil, water, and adsorbed phases for points in the region where the oil phase exists. Outside the oil plume the equilibrium approximation takes on a simpler form to partition constituent mass between the air, water, and adsorbed phases only. Microbial degradation of petroleum products is first discussed in a general model, then the conservation of mass equation for oxygen is incorporated into the analysis which takes advantage of the key role played by oxygen in the metabolism of hydrocarbon utilizing microbes in soil environments. Approximations to two subproblems, oil plume establishment in the unsaturated zone, and solute and vapor transport subsequent to immiscible plume establishment are then developed from the general model.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR023i001p00191","usgsCitation":"Corapcioglu, M.Y., and Baehr, A.L., 1987, A compositional multiphase model for groundwater contamination by petroleum products: 1.
